The Threefold Problem of Magical Ranged Balance: Bonus

Dear Yoshi-P and the Final Fantasy XIV development team,

As with previous letters in this series, I hope that these letters can not only serve as feedback of my own, but also help my fellow players to give their feedback with a better understanding of the game. Accordingly, please pardon me for explaining some things you already know for the sake of my fellow players.

This post is a bonus because it is not examining a balance issue; it is examining the question "what would players want out of SMN if all jobs were well-balanced?" It is in the series because previous posts raised that question by showing that SMN must be drastically changed for game balance and longevity, while saying very little about which of the many possible balanced designs should be used.

Enduring Lessons

We have a game that has lasted ten years, and we would very much like it to last ten more. So let us take some guidance from a 20-year retrospective: Mark Rosewater's "Twenty Years, Twenty Lessons" on Magic: the Gathering, presented both in video format and in three articles.

(Regardless of one's opinion on Wizards of the Coast's recent design decisions and Hasbro's influence on the same, it is remarkable to note that Magic: the Gathering is now 30 years old. Few games last that long, and it makes Rosewater's 20-year retrospective now itself time-tested.)

The individual lessons cover many different aspects of game design, but almost a quarter of them are devoted to the concept that "humans come preloaded": that players come to the game with pre-existing expectations, interests, and behaviors, and that game designers should work with those rather than against them. (The final lesson makes the count a bit unusual.)

He also has something to say about trying to please everyone (emphasis original):

Lesson #15: Design the component for its intended audience

When you aim to please everyone, you often please no one. Not all your players want the same thing out of your game. It's important to understand what different kinds of things your players want, so that you can understand what kinds of different players you have. This means when you design any one component, you need to know which part of your audience it's intended for and then design that component for that audience. If other players don't like it, it doesn't matter. It's not for them.

There's a desire when creating something to try and please the widest audience you can, but this has to be done at the macro level and not the micro level. The way you make as many players happy as possible is to understand what audience segments your game has and then make components that speak to each of those segments. It's more important that each type of player enjoys something about your game than it is that they enjoy everything about your game. What this means is when you are working at the micro level on the components, it's crucial to understand who each component piece is for so that you can design it for that audience. Each member of your audience then gets a part of the game that makes them go, "That's for me!"

(I could write a whole post on the applications of this principle, but that would be outside the scope of this series.)

We will soon have 21 regular battle jobs. If someone does not enjoy or want to play SMN, they have plenty of other options. The jobs can cover many niches between them all.

So what niches should SMN be for? In aesthetic, job fantasy, optimization style, and everything else that is not balance, what do players want out of SMN? The rest of this post is dedicated to exploring as many of these as I can.

"Traditional Final Fantasy SMN"

This one you probably know well. The aesthetic of flashy, varied, powerful summons, and the lore of earning them. The thing players asked for over and over until Endwalker, because previous Final Fantasy games had preloaded that expectation into them.

This particular job fantasy says very little about gameplay, the job's systems and mechanics, as Final Fantasy does not repeat itself. This is good, as it allows the gameplay to be fit to the game in two regards.

First, a real-time MMO wants different things out of its jobs than the classic Final Fantasy games do. The demands on a job for it to be fun for some dozens of hours, as part of a party all controlled by a single player, in a turn-based game, are very different from the demands on a job for it to be fun for some hundreds or thousands of hours, as the only thing a player is doing other than duty mechanics, in a real-time game, and possibly also a thing a player is expected to identify with as part of their player character.

Second, many of the classic summon effects do not work with the duty design for raiding. We cannot allow SMN to summon Ixion and dispel enemy buffs, as those buffs are often required for duty mechanics to function. We cannot allow SMN to summon Phoenix and raise the entire party, as that would essentially be a Healer Limit Break 3 as an individual resource for a DPS job.

Endwalker SMN does mostly fulfill this job fantasy. Mostly, in that the Summon III animations are a little too directly taken from turn-based entries in the Final Fantasy series, where screen-filling entry cutscenes were not a hazard - leading to some players having to use "/petsize all small" and/or put their own effects on Limited in order to see duty mechanics. Rather spoils the effect, when that happens to someone looking for this particular job fantasy.

But even some of the players who want and enjoy this job fantasy have complaints that seem related to it. In the Q&A during 2022 14 Hour Broadcast, a player was disappointed "that Carbuncle isn't really active in battle". A player who started in Endwalker says that (emphasis original) "I enjoy the job a lot, but I [wish] I got to… ACTUALLY SUMMON THINGS instead of just bringing some glowing thing out for 2 seconds to do one big attack. I should be able to command powerful creatures and give them detailed instructions while using my own magic to support them! What kind of summoner does most of the work themselves?!"

This sort of complaint comes up over and over again, hidden in but distinct from complaints about Endwalker SMN's difficulty. Statements like:

"Carbuncle doesn't do anything." "The pet doesn't do anything." "The pet is just a visual effect." "These spells just happen to have Carbuncle drawn into their animations." "Even Demi-Bahamut and Demi-Phoenix are just buttons." "There's no pet in this job."

And then, sometimes someone hears this, points at Carbuncle in the party list or on the screen, and replies "What do you mean? The pet is right there!" Cue mutual incomprehension, where both sides stare at each other and have no idea how to explain their perspective.

What is going on here?

"True Pet Job"

To properly explain why this effect arises would involve explaining some neuroscience findings first, which are even more difficult than the psychology and which I am loath to put through machine translation. Instead, I will use an analogy to convey what each side feels, and from there why so many players are adamant that something is wrong with the feel of Endwalker SMN.

Imagine that you are starting out in a new virtual reality game, one focused on political intrigue and social finesse. It is a really fancy VR game, that even uses force-feedback gloves so players can accurately perform the finer points of etiquette and social graces.

You reach the dining section of the tutorial, the food is served, you pick up your chopsticks... but the force feedback feels like a fork. Instinctively wrong. Immediately off-putting. How are you supposed to play out proper dining etiquette, such as using the wider end of the chopsticks to take from communal platters, with that?

It does not matter if the game is praised as having a great story and great political intrigue. It still feels wrong. It does not matter if the developers are all Western and have never handled chopsticks before, or even expected their audience to welcome this design as easy and familiar. Plenty of Westerners learn to use chopsticks enough to know that something is wrong, even if they only learn the basics in restaurants. It does not matter if previous entries in the series were turn-based and used "eat a bite of food" as a way to pass a turn. The requirements of real-time games are obviously different!

Obviously no one with veto power over the design had any practical experience with chopsticks, or they would have vetoed it because the wrongness is so pervasive. Its presence immediately lowers confidence in the development process.

Endwalker SMN feels exactly like that.

Instinctively wrong. Immediately off-putting. How are we supposed to play out properly working alongside a summon, such as juggling two Global Cooldowns in two different locations, with this?

It does not matter how much the game is praised for having great raids, or even how much the job design is praised for its aesthetics. It still feels wrong. It does not matter if no one on your development team has any serious experience with pet jobs. Plenty of players get enough practice with pet systems to know that something is wrong, either from other games or from the Shadowbringers and earlier versions of SMN. It does not matter if previous entries in the series were turn-based. The requirements of real-time games are different!

The definition of what chopsticks feel like in use is latent in the human brain, just waiting to be brought out by experience. Any Westerner who tries their best at an East Asian restaurant - actually attempting to use the chopsticks as chopsticks, not gracelessly stabbing with them like a fork - will have that definition within them for the rest of their life.

Our hypothetical game developer must work within that definition. Choose whether the chopsticks are made of wood, bamboo, metal, ceramic? Different cross-sections and tapers? Yes, as long as the visuals match. But no forks!

The definition of what a pet system feels like, what makes us see life behind Carbuncle's eyes in a real-time game, is the same way. Any player who tries their best with such a system in any game will have that definition within them for the rest of their life.

You must work within that definition if you want to have anything that looks remotely like a pet, or the mismatch will put players off the game. SMN fit within that definition from A Realm Reborn through Shadowbringers. But Endwalker SMN does not.

What of the other side, then? Why is anyone willing to claim that the entry on the party list or the visuals of Endwalker SMN constitute a pet?

Because we do not have the cultural concept or common knowledge that such a thing could have a distinct feeling, a strict definition. (Even for such familiar things as eating utensils, we do not normally think or talk about it until our attention is drawn to it.) The players who do have that experience largely do not know how to talk about it either, or even necessarily identify that the problem is related to pets.

In the absence of that knowledge, a player with no personal experience of pet systems has no reason to expect "the pet" to mean anything but the visuals or the separate entry on the party list.

Even if they try to play Endwalker SMN, they will not realize. Endwalker SMN uses the pet code in the engine, but it does not activate the right thing in the human brain - that is the problem! So it cannot bring out the latent definition for someone who does not yet have it activated. They will continue to not know that anything is missing.

Further, there is no obvious physical object that players who do have experience with pet systems can use to give others personal experience with the issue. If it was as easy as putting chopsticks in a Westerner's hand, someone would have given you a demonstration at a Fan Festival or game show long ago!

No malice and no obstinacy on either side. Just different pre-verbal instincts, and a lack of cultural concepts to close the gap.

Why do players want something that matches this definition, that feels like a pet, at all?

Fundamentally, because it is fun for some players. Totally aside from optimization, some players enjoy the idea of working closely with an ally they command, whether animal, construct, or otherwise. That relationship is such a common desire as to be a classic RPG archetype even in turn-based games. And in real-time games, pursuing that relationship naturally leads to activating the latent definition of what a pet is, whether the player is aware of it or not.

Moreover, this desire is so common that it cannot reasonably be fulfilled with a limited job or a job that requires a high starting level. Many of these players want to have the pet as a companion throughout their journey. And some will be too intimidated by the responsibility of tanking or healing, so it must be provided on a DPS - SCH would not suffice even if it did not have the issue of Endwalker ACN giving new players a bad impression of it.

Further, because the feeling of a pet system is unique. That specific feeling is not really available outside of video games, and some players find they like it.

And yes, some players like it as an optimization style. Having two interacting sets of actions and positions is a niche - not everyone who wants to pursue challenge wants that specific challenge, but some players do.

Why do players want this from SMN specifically?

First, because SMN used to provide it, from A Realm Reborn through Shadowbringers.

Those pre-existing players are used to that feeling coming with the visual of the pet, and so it not being there is uncomfortable. At best, a player who was used to previous versions of SMN will have a nagging feeling that something is wrong with the job, but not be able to verbalize it. At worst... be very glad that dynamis does not exist on Earth.

And players select themselves into what they like. They invest time, money, glamour hunting, character identities, and more based on what they see in the game. So offering an option and then taking it away is much worse than never offering it in the first place; it spurns those player investments and angers those players.

The results of angering players over this sort of thing are like Kairos. The feeling of the pet was an unremarkable, everyday fact of life until you took it out of the job; removing it by force is what made it an issue burned into players' souls.

(Of course, the consequences come faster on Earth.)

Without understanding that the pet is not the visuals, it is easy to think that the love for Carbuncle is simply an enjoyment of something cute, and that the relationship between the pet and the character lies entirely in the character's mind. But the relationship was always between the pet and the players' brains - you cannot rework that!

Second, because Carbuncle cues players to expect it from both ACN and SMN. Any player who wants to work with a pet is going to be drawn to a job that has the visual of a pet prominently on the art.

Third, because the name "Summoner" itself is strongly tied to that niche, as a matter of RPG archetypes.

At the London Fan Festival, you and Sakaguchi spoke about how Dungeons & Dragons was an influence on Final Fantasy. Well, guess what Dungeons & Dragons calls the spells for getting interactive combat allies? Such spells are often named "Summon [type]", and "summon spells" is easily recognized as the name for that group.

Many, many RPGs follow in those footsteps. TV Tropes calls the whole idea of having a combat ally on demand "Summon Magic". One of the biggest competitors to Dungeons & Dragons is Pathfinder, which made an entire class around the idea of a tight bond between player character and magical ally, and they call it "Summoner".

Give a prospective player a list of all the starting jobs in the game - or even all the jobs in the game - and they will reliably pick out SMN as "the pet job" without any other information. The association is that strong.

(The only other remotely plausible name among the starting classes and the whole list of jobs is "Conjurer". Surely trying to make WHM a pet job is absurd - it would anger another player group while not providing a DPS for this niche.)

You may not want to have pet systems in the game at all, but arguing against the human brain is a doomed prospect. Your current SMN design is trying to argue against the human brain both on what a pet job is and where it should be, and of course it is losing. Sooner could you order back the tide!

Games for humans must bend to the human brain. Failing to do so is losing you players, entirely separate from balance concerns. Let us hear from Cynwise again:

Classes are the lens through which players experience the game, and a bad fit between class/player can put players off the game permanently. Correctly advertising a class before a player makes an investment becomes paramount to avoid those times of customer uncertainty.

Every time I see a new or returning player mention SMN and any sort of interest in pets - whether in Novice Network, on Reddit, or elsewhere - I am disproportionately likely to never see that player again. It is a result of bad job advertising; the name, visuals, and history all promise something the job no longer provides.

You are not going to get away from players wanting and expecting SMN to be a pet job. Please, for the love of Hydaelyn and Etheirys, just accept that and make SMN a pet job again. The engine work you did for SCH already removed most of the "pet jank", and players who do not like the nature of managing a pet have plenty of other jobs to play.

This disconnect can extend into other jobs too, even for a player who does not quit the game entirely.

SGE has a variety of animations that move the nouliths along with the SGE's arms, masterfully crafted to suggest that the nouliths are extra arms without drawing attention to that aspect of their design. Players are supposed to be watching either the beautiful laser light show or the duty mechanics. So how did I wind up noticing? Because as soon as I picked up SGE and finished laying out my hotbars, my brain said "No. Not after what happened to SMN."

Only after that rejection did I realize how the animations were designed. It was a shock to realize that my brain no longer trusted the animations to say anything about extensions of my character, even on a completely different job that had nothing to do with pets.

And yet the reaction is selective. Recently RuneScape released their own version of a pet job, and my brain was happy to accept those as true pets despite the limited graphics and tick-based gameplay. It is not that my brain no longer trusts animations, or no longer trusts game designers - it no longer trusts your development process.

Your artists are doing great work with great skill. I can see that in both the animations and the development panels. But all their effort is wasted if the gameplay does not fit!

As much as I appreciate your Lead Technical Artist, Tatsuya Okahisa, trying to measure and weigh a Carbuncle, the measure of a Carbuncle cannot replace its active - and interactive - participation in battle.

This job fantasy and player desire is almost entirely about the job's systems and mechanics, the interaction with the pet. You even have great freedom regarding the animations and SFX, so long as they provide suitable feedback about that interaction. And the lore about where a pet comes from is entirely up to you.

Luckily for you, it is therefore entirely compatible with the player idea of the "traditional Final Fantasy SMN" described above, as their requirements interact little and interfere not at all. Even more luckily for you, satisfying both does not even require any engine work, though explaining how to do so requires its own post outside the scope of this series.

"Damage Over Time" / "The DOT Mage"

Yes, I know the engine has a cap on debuffs on enemies. But this is also a classic RPG archetype, to the point that tabletop RPGs strive to include it despite it being an even worse fit for them; their combat is often too short for DOTs to be effective, and tracking many small hits is tedious and unwieldy in pen-and-paper tracking. There are an enormous amount of poisoner rulesets by popular demand.

Yes, DOTs do not currently work well for balancing in the presence of downtime, because they do not tick on untargetable enemies. But some games allow players to work around downtime by "detonating" their DOTs right before that downtime for part or all of the remaining damage. I see no reason this idea could not serve here; you could tune it as you like, and other jobs already have actions for downtime management like MNK's Anatman and BLM's Umbral Soul. As a bonus, having so many small hits makes a DOT job less subject to Critical Hit and Direct Hit RNG.

No, Endwalker BRD does not serve this niche properly. Part of the desire is to have the DOTs interact with the rotation in some way, not just be used like cooldowns that have their timer on the enemy instead of the hotbars. Plus, it is easier to justify many DOTs and their interactions with the rotation on a Disciple of Magic; there are only so many explanations for physically inflicted DOTs.

It does not really matter whether you accomplish this by lifting the cap on debuffs on enemies, by implementing the DOTs as buffs on the player character, or some other means. (If you are not worried about large-scale content, you can even just leave it, as 60 debuffs on an enemy has enough room for 2.5 debuffs per player character in Alliance Raids.) Players want a DOT job, it is a popular archetype, accept that and provide it.

But I do not think you need to provide it on SMN; having the new magical ranged DPS be Green Mage or something and putting it there also seems like a fine option.

Why do players want it on SMN? Mostly because SMN used to be a place to get this archetype, and now it is not available at all. There is also a good argument that DOTs are one of few ways to mechanically represent SMN's thematic ties to healers without compromising its placement in the DPS role. Both are fine reasons, but not so strong as to demand that SMN have DOTs as long as the archetype is served somewhere.

"Death by a Thousand Cuts"

This player desire often gets lumped in with "DOT job", since some players fulfill it via DOTs. (Especially if they have the variant that wants all individual instances of damage to be small, thus conflicting with many non-DOT archetypes.) But it is separate, and indeed some players prefer not to fulfill it via DOTs so that they can see all the individual hits. It is fundamentally about having very frequent individual instances of damage, with the acceptance that most or all of those instances will be small hits for the sake of balance.

Some players seek this out for the power fantasy of constantly applying pressure to an opponent, applying one's tools to prevent the opponent from ever having a moment to breathe and refocus. World of Warcraft gives this niche to Affliction Warlock, enabled by that game engine's faster Global Cooldown and faster (and variable-length) DOT ticks. But here, with a relatively slow Global Cooldown, slower fixed-length DOT ticks, and animation locks on every action, how can we make this work?

The Global Cooldown and animation locks themselves enforce momentary pauses. And while it is desirable to have some variation in optimal APM between jobs, so that players can find something suited to their preference, asking for constant or nearly constant double weaving seems like rather much. (Especially since there are some players who specifically seek out going faster than they can press buttons, either for disability reasons or for sheer speed. Let me tell you, as someone who cannot press NIN mudras at the intended speed even with special techniques, getting to go fast in a safe way is a thrill.)

This leaves few ways to make things work for these players. Either we must have multiple hits of damage per action - which BLU does to a degree, though Waning Nocturne is an instant disqualifier - or we must give the job some sort of frequent indirect attacks that do not require the player to press a button each time, but are somehow still managed by the player.

Which means that unlike "DOT job", this player desire does have a strong reason to be specifically on SMN. Any true pet job in this engine must give the pet a frequently used Global Cooldown anyway, and have the player indirectly interact with it anyway, at which point most of the work is done. Having only a few large instances of damage is even a good way to help the summons' signature attacks feel special without being game-breaking. All that remains is to make sure that the pace of the "standard" non-pet actions is not overly slow.

"The Strategist"

This particular player desire may seem exclusive to hardcore players. It is not. Players of any skill level can have it as a power fantasy: wanting to feel smart by playing their character, able to overcome obstacles by strategy, tactics, and finesse rather than brute force.

Some players do take this power fantasy as a motivation to improve their play. But it was entirely available on Shadowbringers SMN to casual players doing no more than "Ifrit for 1-2 targets, Garuda for AOE, Titan for soloing, press everything on cooldown, keep DOTs up". The character can be doing almost all of the work.

But the player must consistently and frequently have the feeling of relevant choices, which can only come from depth to the job.

For example, when having a cast time was the default case, choosing whether to use Ruin IV or an Egi Assault for movement felt like a relevant choice, whether the player had any concept of a rotation or not. They did not have to know anything about avoiding overcapping or saving Ruin IV stacks for Demi-Bahamut, let alone make their choice with such things in mind.

But Endwalker SMN is so easily mobile that the choice of instant cast no longer feels relevant outside of planning for movement-heavy duties with known timelines, and is unsatisfyingly limited even then. And levelling up makes it worse rather than better, since the job has fewer natural cast times at higher levels. It is absurd for levelling up a job to make it worse at part of its own job fantasy!

Players want this out of SMN specifically not just because prior versions of the job offered it, but because ACN advertises it very heavily. The entire ACN questline stresses the importance of strategy and tactics over physical or magical force, not just for the Warrior of Light but for the entire guild. Even the underlying lore of arcanima points at that theme, using geometric patterns to produce efficient spells using limited aether. Every novice ACN is already doing their magic with math.

This questline and lore attract the players who want to be playing a master of strategy, tactics, and arcane magic. The job should grow into something believable for such a character. That it grows into "spam colored Ruin" instead is a disappointing failure of job advertising.

"The System Juggler"

Some players want to have lots of different systems that interact and put pressure on each other in their job, the gameplay of juggling plates rather than managing just one thing intensively. (It is not juggling if catching everything is easy.) The systems can be all tied to one lore and aesthetic theme to explain them all being on the same job, but they have to be mechanically distinct.

This is an optimization style preference, but it is not just an optimization style preference, and in some ways it is easier to understand the difference from the perspective of a casual player.

Put a casual RDM player in front of a striking dummy. What do they see and think while they are just hitting the dummy, without any advice from a raider?

Build mana, spend mana, repeat. "Hmm, I have room to use the long cast of my higher mana type without unbalancing, I can use that to make room for the proc from the melee combo." Maybe eventually "I should do a melee combo well in advance of Manafication so I have room for that 50/50 mana when it comes off cooldown."

The minigame of building mana is a system. The melee combo is an infrequent spender that has one interaction with that system (via proc generation) each time it is used. Acceleration is an infrequent charged action that interacts with that system via proc generation. Corps-a-corps and Engagement / Displacement are so flexible as charged actions that they can go in any open weave slot when they are not used for movement. (Though sufficiently casual players do not know about weaving either.)

GCD polarity is an example of the pressure between systems that I am pointing at, but a casual player is not going to figure out that it exists without stopping to think. They do not naturally think that a small drift in cooldowns is a problem if they do not realize how to fix it. They do not naturally notice that it specifically happens every time they use a melee combo without using Fleche and Contre Sixte in that combo and without a corresponding Acceleration (or with both charges of Acceleration in close succession). To figure out why it happens on their own, they have to open their Actions & Traits window and do math from there to realize that their melee combo is 12.7 seconds long at base Spell Speed.

Put a casual Shadowbringers SMN player in front of a striking dummy. What do they see and think while they are just hitting the dummy, without any advice from a raider?

"Oh, I should use an instant for this next spell, Energy Drain is about to come off cooldown."
System pressure, and unlike with RDM, they notice it!

"Oh, I can't use my Egi Assaults. That makes sense, I have Demi-Bahamut out instead of an Egi. Demi-Bahamut lasts 20 seconds and Egi Assaults charge every 30 seconds; if I make sure I have no charges left going into each Demi, I can avoid overcapping on charges." System pressure, even if they have no idea about using Ruin IV stacks for Wyrmwaves.

"Oh, I have no use for Ruin IV during Demi-Phoenix, but I do want to spend Egi Assaults after to avoid overcapping. I should spend some Ruin IV stacks before Demi-Phoenix so that I don't overcap on those." System pressure.

"Oh, I can use Enkindle during my Dreadwyrm Trance while I get Demi-Bahamut ready, just like I did last time... wait, my next Dreadwyrm Trance is about 2 minutes away, would they line up again? Actually, if I use Tri-Disaster to refresh my DOTs exactly on time, that should wind up as a multiple of 30 seconds, so exactly 2 minutes. Oh. Oh! Every one of my cooldowns and charges, other than the Trances and Tri-Disaster, either fits evenly into 2 minutes or is generated by something that does. If I follow my DOTs and delay my Trances, I should wind up doing the same thing every 2 minutes." System pressure has given them the basic framework of the new raider rotation.

Leave them there long enough, and they will recreate half of the new raider rotation on their own! Why?

(In part because Shadowbringers SMN provided a much better learning experience than many players give it credit for, but that is beside the point.)

Because the rotation at every skill level was made by constant interactions between systems, that put pressure on each other to handle them in certain ways. Trances tied into the pet management and the DOTs and the Aetherflow, not to just one thing. The different summon phases constrained each other via Egi Assault and Ruin IV stacks, even though only one pet was ever active at a time. Every phase naturally flowed into the next and encouraged thinking about the next; the 2 minute loop was simply where all the systems interlocked into a cycle.

That constant interaction, not just occasional, creates a different feel to the rotation. Not just making choices, or even just making choices that cascade into each other, but that the rotation is about managing those systems to keep all the plates in the air. That the rotation is inherently complex even without movement - BLM's planning style is not it.

Some players called SMN "Ruin mage" even before Endwalker. To a player who wants to juggle systems, this used to be beside the point.
