Help for those with Directx / AMD crashes

Hi everyone,

So the whole afternoon I've been trying to log into the game (it's been YEARS). I was curious and wanted to come back, create a new char and enjoy the game again.



To my surprise, the game was crashing every couple of minutes when trying to create a new character.

The error I got was
An unexpected error has occurred. Exiting FINAL FANTASY XIV.

ffxiv_dx11.exe
KERNEL32.DLL
ntdll.dll

all those were part of the error (including this for people who search for it)

My config is as follow :

Ryzen 5900X

AMD Radeon 6900XT

Asus B550-XE Motherboard

Windows 10 (21H1 all updated installed, OS build 19043.1151)

Playing on a 1440p screen, at 144hz



Those are the things I did that didn't help :

- Reinstall Windows 10

- Reinstall the game

- Try the latest optional AMD Driver : 21.7.2

- Try the latest recommended AMD Driver : 21.6.1

- Disabling Smart Access Memory (Both in BIOS and the Radeon software)

- I went back to an older BIOS of my motherboard (2403)



Finally, there are a couple steps I did that seemed to have fixed the issue :

- Ingame setting : I uncapped the fps to None (so no limiter). Not sure it really helped

- In Radeon, I disabled system wide VSYNC and

- What I believed REALLY fixed things, was rolling back to an older version of the Radeon drivers, namely version v21.2.3 with a full factory reset.



No more issues. I hope this helps some of you who face a similar issue!

A quick update on my experience: The latest AMD Radeon Drivers 21.8.1 have fixed the issue. So no more need to play with a couple months driver.
I played for hours without any crashes.

Still crashing. I'm so tired of dealing with this. Have had to deal with this before it just suddenly stops and I have no idea what it is I did just to see it again a few weeks or months later -_-'

The game lets you choose Direct X 9 from the config menu, but then crashes and says you need the latest DirectX version.
My question is.. Why is that option there in the first place??

What steps have you taken? Many friends managed to have a playable game, and I haven't had crashes for 11 days, while this was happening every couple of minutes;

Have tried all that you are saying, and more. Still crashing.

If you still face issues I highly recommend to :

- Update your drivers (with a factory reset OR DDU)

- Use "Gaming" preferences from Radeon, and Disable VSYNC (don't activate things like Radeon Chill etc.)

- Reset your in-game graphical settings

The game supports the DX9 and DX11 engines, thus it has the dialog to switch.
But, not all systems have DX9, as it is a carry over from Win7, and while the Microsoft DX system is good, it does have issues providing backwards compatibility.
So, it's up to the end user to make sure their PC has the needed engines and libraries installed for the applications needing them.
