How "twitchy" is this game?

Living in the rural country, I play with frightening latency. (800-1000 ms)


I am wondering how forgiving the game is with high pings.


So far I've found that if I dance around a lot, I can usually (not always) avoid the telegraphed attacks.


Bad me, I rolled a White Mage as my first toon. Being a WoW escapee, I didn't realize that healers only heal. haha


So far, healing in dungeons hasn't been too bad. Sweat a little bit, but so far the game seems to give me enough time to fire off a heal after a particularly bad hit on someone. I've noticed that my heal goes off, but it takes time to register on the player. So I build in a little pre-healing. It usually doesn't go to waste. Really have to work on mana management though.


I have no intention of doing Savage raids or super high level dungeons.


But I was just wondering if the game is forgiving enough to allow me to do the normal stuff.


WoW was pretty forgiving. Tanking was easy. Healing a bit more of a nightmare. And I did okay as DPS. Never went past Raid Finder. In WoW, I tried to overgear a bit to make up for the latency. I see FF14 syncs you.


Anyway, fun game. Love the graphics! Wish it wasn't so quiet. I miss WoW's World Chat. FF14 is so lonely sometimes. :p

Ive always found healing to be fairly non twitchy, unlike some classes that need to mash off global cooldown abilities between every attack. As a whm I can be fairly reactive while simultaneously throwing some damage/aoes when people dont need to be healed. You are the healer role and your main job is to keep people alive, but dont let that discourage you from throwing out dots or stones when people are fine.

I use a target of target macro to keep my main target the tank and cast aero/stone on whatever they're targeting
I think its

/macroicon "Stone"
/ac "Stone" <tt>
/ac "Stone" <t>

you use it on either your target's target if valid or your direct target if valid, just replace stone with aero for your dot.

As far as MP usage goes, Lucid Dreaming in your role actions is going to be your best friend for this. Its only on a 60s cooldown now, and I usually pop it around 5-6k mp

Oh, that's a good macro. I'll have to use that!

To be honest, macros are detrimental for high pings, because macros don't queue. If you directly use skills, you can use the skill about 1 second before the (global) cooldown runs out, and it will automatically use the skill as soon as the cooldown has finished. So even with half a second or a second ping, you can still cast spells without spending time doing nothing. This doesn't work with macros however, so with a second ping, you'll have a 1 second extra downtime between casting spells.

Yes, I've noticed that (unlike WoW) I can start casting right away rather than waiting for that latency to be over. Very nice.


Would that macro be affected by latency since it's just acquiring the target of target?

No macro queues, which means, all macros will have this issue, even if they just cast the spell on your normal target, as the skill directly would do.

As a new player I can only speak to early game content and not endgame content, but FF XIV seems easier and less twitchy than other MMOs I've played.

WOW and SWTOR have a 1.5 second global cool down, so you need to know what ability you need to use next and be ready to hit it every 1.5 seconds, and that also includes taking the time to position yourself properly, checks for buffs/debuffs/DoTs/procs/etc.

ESO is even faster with a 1.0 second global cool down.

FF XIV has a 2.5 second global cool down. I hear at end game, you throw in a few abilities that don't count for global cool down occasionally and that positioning is more important in this game than others. But it doesn't seem very twitchy to me, at least early on.
