I think some people thought that but I really wish we had balloons popping out of our characters head when we talk in /say chat. That would help to see if a person next to you is saying something.
Have Yoshida said something about that in the past?

I... am not sure if it's actually a good idea? I just imagined Eureka, where people use /say chat a lot, and the screen almost completely covered with balloons. And more than that they will just change every second because of "one word per message" thing.
I might be wrong but I think 1.xx had a similar feature with pop up messages. I think it was just facial expressions but I could be confusing this with an entirely different MMO.
They do, I actually changed my text colors to be closer to how it's in WoW out of habit (/tell is pink, party chat is blue, fc chat is green, etc). I honestly miss the speech bubbles - unless it's a really long text, it's easy to read then and there rather than deviating my eyes to the corner of the screen. I can see why it would become a mess when there are many people typing at once, like the other comment said, but it'd be nice to have at least as an option that can be toggled on/off.
I've seen people who don't want this saying things like "But it would have chat bubbles all over the screen! You wouldn't be able to see anything!" And I can only be snide with my response and say "You've never heard of the options menu, have you?" I really scratch my head at people who don't even consider that such features would have an on/off option in the menu.
Well if it would be implemented as optional thing that you can turn off - that's okay. If it's something what you need to deal with, it would be a mess. Not everywhere though, mostly in places like Limsa and maybe few quests spots where you need to shout things in /say chat so nothing really that criminal, but still could be annoying.
