Is the PS3(4?) holding back the game?

Now before we get into the "euh em gee, not everyone can afford a high-end PC" discussion, I'd like to view this from a costumer's point of view disregarding what platform that person plays from. Customers want the best out of a game.

When we look at gear design, we notice an unhealthy "copy-paste" culture. When we assume that this culture wasn't born out of lazyness, only one other thing comes to mind: the limitations of an 8 year old console (PS3).

Now with the hunts, I notice quite a large group complaining about their loading time. When I ask them what platform they're on, 9 out of 10 times it's on PS3. So I hear you saying, that's bull crap. Well I can't prove it, so you will have to take my word for it for the sake of this thread.

Memory: due to the PS3's (and even PS4's <--) memory limitations, some simple features are not possible (saving a PvP profile, or hotbar ability setups). Hence the few options we have to create our character.

Did SE foresee the trouble cross-platform might cause when the discrapancy get's bigger as the game evolves? Or do they aim to level out area's which could cause problems for the aforementioned consoles?

Your opinion is very much appreciated. I'd also like to read some from experts regarding game design.

You lost me when you mentioned the PS4 holding the game back, as it is mostly on par with the PC version. This won't change for the foreseeable future, but they mentioned dropping PS3 support if they feel it's necessary. It is probably the only one capable of holding the game back. I know for PCs, they get better every day, so they sky is the limit for them. The PC version also has a couple features the console versions lack, but that's not a game breaker. The PS4 is still just as good at the moment...for this game, anyway.

Yes. There are memory constraints for consoles that this game cannot get around. The example is one of many, but the principle remains the same: design decisions are greatly affected and limited by what the PS3 and PS4 can do.

Edit: I'm not saying the game is bad or won't survive for many years. I love the game, but you'd have to be ignoring the obvious to state that the PC version isn't being held back by console limitations.

Nope, the game will survive as long as XI did if they play it smart with the design. The only true limitations are displaying inventory icons thus far and various stuff that doesn't hinder actual gameplay, when in comparison, XI actually has more active inventory slots than XIV does. XI is going on 12+ years as a PS2 game designed in 1999-2002 and has 5 main expansions and tons and tons of even monthly updates adding in new content concepts like the monster rancher like system and playing as a monster.

The only thing that'll hold the game back is if they decide to be pretty reserved on game design. Anything you'd hear about is just people being disappointed - the game won't be hindered in any meaningful manner for at least 6 years if it even lasts that long.

This doesn't say anything about the game being hindered from progressing - meaning no expansions, no major updates so on and so forth.

How's this any different from all the other threads on this topic?

My point of view as a player is this. I have a ps3 and i bought the game, so quit designing content that my system cannot handle (hunts, odin...). I don't give a crap about the ps3 limitations and how much better the game could be if they stopped supporting it. As long as it is, i expect content to reflect that.

Yeah, agreed. Read that post up and down...not seeing anything of this nature.

Looking into my crystal ball I see that, PS3 support will fall to the wayside if not for the first expansion then for the second expansion.

They're not very open with what the PS3 actually limits the game on. Certain things can just be limited on the PS3 itself, but some things have to be limited on all systems because the PS3 wouldn't be able to handle it. I mean it's already capped out on memory.
