I'm liberal, but FFXIV may just be TOO liberal...

I won't sit here and complain about the path the game is taking mechanics wise... it's really pointless in my opinion. But I really do want to raise concern and/or talk about the fact that (in my opinion) there is nothing that sets us apart as characters.

Any other game I have played (and I realize this is not every other game - just what i've seen), I was always shocked to see a higher level player all decked out in endgame gear... it was kind of a "Whoa, I don't think I'll ever get all that big bad gear @_@" feeling. It gave me something to play towards, something to strive to be.

Now, obviously, the game is extremely new. However, even in new games I saw that ONE lv50 player or those few lv30 players when I was just lv10 or so and thought to myself "Oh man, I can't wait to get further in the game." Even FFXI was like this, WoW was like this, GW (sometimes), TERA, RIFT, Diablo, etc. That's what kept me playing for years.

In FFXIV, I just don't feel like I get excited by seeing a higher level character, because we're ALL lv50, and nearly ALL of us are all kinds of decked out in cool stuff. I am on a legacy server, so that might be why, but has anyone else felt this way? I even kinda noticed it on non-legacy servers. It feels too liberal.

Weird use of "liberal" there... I though it was going to be about politics lol.

Anyway, I agree with your post... and have said the same things in other threads about the issues with XIV.

FFXI is the only game where gear felt like an accomplishment. Most games are easy to gear.

Don't kid yourself, XI was one of the easiest games out there (with the except of select content). The only thing that made gearing difficult was the required time-scale.

Yeah also FFXI changed alot, since you prob played. The gear now is easy to get and they use ilvl now.

Haha yeah, I used Liberal in the sense of thinking about everyone on an equal playing field. While FFXI was one of the more "gear is an accomplishment" type games, it definitely isn't alone. I just wish XIV had more accomplishments to make the player feel proud of their character and/or job/classes.

The only thing I thought when seeing those people is "they were playing for more time than me"

If I even bothered to inspect them, that is.

But, taking out the time factor aside for a second, they were still a sight to behold. I went to school full time, worked part time, and played FFXI and other MMOs... Time was never the factor that decided my gear, but rather finding a dedicated group of people that were looking to work towards the same goal who would stick through for weeks or months just to get that one piece of armor that everyone was drooling over. The requirement to find a good community to be a part of was really the challenging part behind all of that. I miss that sense of community. XIV has it, but because everything is instanced, you just play - disband - queue up - play - disband - rinse and repeat. I feel like there's no relationships that are made.

I hate XI with a passion myself but easy? That a joke? Time consuming was a major factor in many parts of the game yeah, but the majority of the game was far from easy. Maybe after it went downhill when abyssia was released, but yeah that was what, 6 or 7+ years after release?

the only thing that really distinguishes you from other people is if you have an allagan weapon. at least on my server that's still less than 5% of the population.
