Dark Knight

Drk could sacrifice their hp and get a hp shield of equal or more value letting them take less damage and get over healed at the same time. Problem solved. I love how salty some people are being in here because it doesn't match XI. So what warrior never had a history of being a tank before XI either.

This is Final Fantasy XIV, not Final Fantasy XI.
Different games, different roles for some jobs.

Did people complain when the (al)chemist, pure buffer/debuffer in FFV, became a pure healer in FFT, got mixed with the thief in FFX (Rikku), and is now just a discipline of the hand in FFXIV?
Nope. Because that's how Final Fantasy works.

Sorry, but no. Cecil as Dark Knight was a tank who had a burst-DPS signature move. The differences stat-wise between Cecil as DRK and Cecil as PLD were minimal. Both ways you used him in the front row so that he'd be attacked more often and take the brunt of the damage, because he was high DEF/MDEF/HP. Minus Darkness, his DPS was poor.

Edit to add: I hope SAM is eventually introduced as a tank, too.

A lot of samurai players wouldn't mind samurais becoming a tank job. I myself included would love to play as a samurai tank.

I'd be extremely disapointed if it was anything apart from tank.

DRK being a tank was one of the best moves they could've done. We already have far more melee DPS than the average raid has melee DPS slots to a point where their balance is a nightmare, and not enough variety for tank players.

Flash spam and riot blade combo, can hold any number of mobs in low level dungeons easily.

Years ago going into XI and seeing that Dark Knight was a DPS, made me upset because all other MMOs I have played had the DRK as a Tank. So, XI was the odd ball on this one. Yoshi P. and his team have been doing a good job thus far. I think they've earned some measure of trust that they will make good quality work of an extremely loved job.

They'll probably make the Gunblade Job a Tank Job as well because of how Garleans with Gunblades always seem to wear Tankish Armor :p

The way I see it, if I'm the huge hulking dude with a greatsword that's also dripping with dark energies or whatever, I'm guessing most things will see me as the biggest threat anyway. Might as well revel in it.

I kinda wanted Dark Knight as a DPS with HP being it's main resource, but holy **** after seeing that armor I don't care. Sorry WAR, its been fun, but your getting benched in the expac.

Dark Knight is different in every title.

From the weapon it uses to its skills, abilities, lore and job role (and let's be honest, excluding FFXI, every job (except healers) in every game is an auto-attack DPS anyway, including Paladin). So let's stop arguing whether DRK is a tank or a dps, because in this game it has been decided it is a tank, and in this game, that is all that matters.

I was disappointed at first that dark knight was a tank but after releasing said disappointment in kickboxing class I no longer care since what's done is done, now I would like to know has there been other hints that they will have more DD jobs in the expansion, because if they just release 2 jobs the DRK tank and healer job whatever that may be it'll be sad that's all SE could add in.

Err. . .Dark Knights in FFT (including Gaff) didn't really take hits better than any other class. Their only real advantage was that every turn they could absorb PA*WP HP back from someone in range. There was no actual defense stat in FFT. >_>

I honestly dont mind DRK being a tank, but my main interest was in Samurai. If that class isn't a tank im going to find the tallest jumpable bridge in eorzea and just let it go... I love being a tank, due to it being much more challenging than a dps role in my own opinion and playstyle, and samurai was what I wanted to main as - if it ever comes out

Excellent! I originally chose marauder in 1.0 seeing as it was the closest to DRK. When they added WAR and forced me to tank I kinda just rolled with it and now I actually prefer tanking. i was somewhat worried about having to change my roll again when DRK was teased and now I am extremely pleased to see DRK is infact a tank! It's gonna be a lot of fun!!!!!!

Just make certain you don't accidentally kill yourself if they decide to keep some of Dark Knights life sacrifice cost skills. Last thing you want is to derp during a Tank moment and accidentally kill yourself.

Though that would be a interesting way to start the phrase "Derp Knight " for players that accidentally kill themselves as a Dark Knight due to dark knight life sacrifice skills.

Assuming of course that they actually have those life sacrifice skills. From the sounds of it being a parry/dodge tank, it appears that the Dark Knight will be a Dark Knight in name and armour only.

It actually sounds more like a Rune Fencer right now.

That's exactly what I have been thinking. I don't have a very strong opinion on it but I am used to it being a DD from ffxi. If it's a tank here then I really think they are just gonna toss everything that made it a drk just so it can be different/a tank.

I was not expecting Drk to be a tank... and was only a little disappointed because I wanted to switch from tank main and be a lazy DPS for Drk :D Drk totally fits as a tank though, and I'm looking forward to it. Guess my WAR will switch for DRK, and my MNK will switch for NIN.

The big thing that I'm surprised nobody else has mentioned yet is about the no base class... I'm really hoping I'm wrong here, but this could very well mean that they are adding new soul crystals to existing classes. It would make sense for a MRD to Equip a GS and a DRK soulcrystal... I just hope I'm wrong because I really don't want to be a lvl 50 DRK as soon as the expansion releases.

As for the QQ from the "it ruins the class" crowd, FFXI ruined DRK. Making it a tank with a greatsword is bringing it back to glory. I for one, can't F*kin wait!

This tank better spam Drain / Drainga / DrainII and all sorts of TP skills that rip health away from the enemies and transfer it to him.

Except a lot of us watched it fail when they tried it with WAR. We'll see if they've learned how to do it, or if they'll go another route. . .

Don't WAR and PLD have separate DPS / TANK 'stances' ?
Why does everyone have to rip on DRK on the 5 lines of text we got to go on them for right now...
I'm SUUUUURE they will have the same versatility, I'm SUUUURE they will have a HP draining stance that greatly enhances their DPS (perhaps huge boosts to enmity too, which could be a great tool for switching from DPS / off tank to taking over main tank) And I'm SUUUURE they gotta have some drain in their arsenal.

Why SE...did we really need two sword tanks?

You know, from someone who isn't satisfied with the current summoner/entire job system in this game, I think the dark knight being a tank is great, and at the very least it shouldn't change what you guys think of the job.

What upsets me about the summoner is it's lack of WOW factor, I summon those egis for the first time and feel... completely disappointed, and the gameplay doesn't change a thing. Essentially there's no drive behind them. But they were short on time, REALLY short, so it's fine, but now that they have that pressure of release off them, I think they're really going all out creative wise with the Dark Knight, I mean they sure didn't hold back with the outfit :D. On top of that there's no base class... this one statement, could be the beginning of something wonderful, after all, the jobs are where the real passion of the concepts come to fruition, I think the whole idea behind it was to want the marauder to get to the warrior, and the thaumaturge to get to the black mage, etc. but having the pure job and all those levels of abilities and mechanics from the get go could do wonders for gameplay! if they go on to give the rest of the current and future jobs this style we could have some wonderful, fully fledged jobs, I hope it turns out fantastic!

- PLD = Sword and Shield (1 handed weapon sword)
- WAR = Great Axe (2 handed weapon axe)
- DRK = Great Sword (2 handed weapon sword)

Thing is, you don't flash spam. That wastes MP like nobodies business at the early levels. One flash is enough for initial aggro retention then you Riot Blade combo bouncing it back and forth so that you maintain equal aggro on all mobs, you can flash again after a bit to solidify your aoe aggro but really once is enough if you know how to juggle your hate building sword combo. Any flash used after is in case of emergencies. Or if more mobs end up getting pulled that you intended.

Also, I've been in low level roulette many a time where the tanks just didn't understand how their skills worked. Gladiator doesn't play like most primary tanks in other MMOs do. (ie you can continually use your single target and aoe aggro taunts to keep aggro on you and that's really all you have to do in most other games) You can't just flash spam, not a with a good party. It doesn't grab as much aggro and if you are just using it and not doing your combos properly aggro is going to just get ripped right off of you by the dps or healer pretty quickly. And again, you'll run out of MP really fast.

I've seen many a bad beginning tank, thinking they need to spam flash, then they run out of mp and the healer rips hate off them because they are just healing like normal and they have no more mp for flash. Flash spam is just bad in general at the lower levels. I can't comment yet on how it works at the higher levels and endgame, but I'll find out easily enough after 2.4 (gonna level up my tanks more and take advantage of the mass ninja ques).

I did experience some good tanks as well, but I'd say the bad ones or mediocre ones outwieghed the good when I leveled up my Summoner, Black Mage, White Mage, Monk and Dragoon. I primarily did dungeons so I kind of know what I'm talking about, at least from my experience. I also have a real good friend who I leveled up my first job with (Summoner) who mains Paladin and I took mental notes on the things he was doing, plus he would explain stuff as we did dungeons together. I learned a lot about Gld/Pld tanking by watching him. He's definitely one of the best tanks I know.

So, when I started leveling up Gladiator and Marauder to the point where I could run dungeons on them players in my party that had obviously been with bad tanks before would be amazed that I'd keep aggro on 3-4/5 mobs at the same time without aggro coming off and another player being attacked (this was also with trigger happy archers). I'm not trying to toot my own horn, it's just this is what happened. It's what I've experienced. But I can't lie, it is a pretty nice feeling when you're congratulated for tanking well. There are many people that don't know how to play Gladiator and Marauder and tank well at the early levels. Hell there are people that are level 50 with i90+ gear and still can't tank worth a darn.

There is still hope if they want SAM for 3.0's release. We'll have 4 tanks, 3 healers and 6 dps (7 dps if they add another one which I think they will do since adding only DRK and one healer isn't enough for an expansion). Also, if they would SAM as a dps, we would have 4 melee. That seems highly unlikely to happen.

The 4th tank could be the SAM. It would bring balance since a lot of people want to play DRK and SAM. Gone would be the days of waiting for tanks. I have to admit I am worried now that DRK will be a tank. I have been waiting for SAM since release.

I'ma stop you right there, spamming flash is indeed OP at lower levels. Up until... 40-ish you can just spam flash and then spend all your GCD combo'n Riot Blade to get your MP back just fine. The only thing this doesn't really apply to is bosses.

Fixed that for you. Unless your group massively out gears you, and I mean full I40 ahead of you, flash is still pretty king.

Yeah, but I ran into that a lot when I was leveling PLD after 40. Lol

so is the general idea that a lot of people who wanted to play DRK are now not going to play DRK because they don't want to tank?

i wish i could swap between dps classes in my raid but im just stuck tanking and don't even care about DRK lol.
