This is the problem, though. We've become spoiled with the idea of having all this stuff that doesn't even matter and taken it for granted. You can't compare housing to all those other things because they don't take up nearly as much space as housing would.

I don't even know why ppl are so adamant on not increasing the auto demolition timer.

Look, I'm on your side here. I want everyone to get a house and not lose them due to an auto demolition timer which is way too restricting.

If you really want to blame someone on the shortage of houses, it should really be players who hoard multiple houses and SE who is not taking any actions against such anti-social behavior in a MMO.

One is a finite resource the other is not. Sure in a perfect world everyone would have a house, thus no need for a demo timer. We do not live in a perfect world. Losing a house sucks, happened to me, had large father passed away did not play for nearly a year. and lost it. Shit happens, but I was not playing thus I had no need for the house. Why is that so hard to understand when it comes to a finite resource being able to hold onto just because seems silly.

Because at this point in the game's life cycle, houses are a limited commodity. The other items aren't. A mount dropping for one player doesn't prevent another player from getting that mount. Someone getting an achievement that grants a title doesn't remove that achievement from the game so no others can get it.

You're right that housing shouldn't be different - yet it is. Hence the need for demolition.

Until such time as SE changes the system so supply of houses is not a problem, players need to weigh their desire for a house against their desire to take extended breaks from the game on occasion. They still have access to housing in the form of apartments if they want those long breaks that badly. They can still be tenants in the houses of their friends who don't take long breaks and so aren't at risk of demolition.

The amount of houses that would go back to the market if they took action against those with multiple houses would be incredibly small in comparison to auto demolition.

Is it though? Were talking several wards taken that would be released at once (assuming they don't have brain damage), that's a lot of houses to cast your lot in VS the odd gotcha house with 50+ bidders on it

"several wards" lol I don't know if this is a thing in your server, but in mine there isn't a single one that is majoritarily owned by a single person/obvious random submarine FCs other than in Empy(which doesn't matter because there's still over a hundred FC plots left and none of these would help with the personal demand)

Meanwhile, autodemo has been off for a very long time now and looking at Steamcharts the playerbase is now about one third than what it was when EW released. Its a terrible metric but enough to guess that a very large percentage of houses will be available once its turned on again.
I don't really like autodemo but it is what it is.

Auto demo is good for people that aren't playing anymore gives it a chance for people that are playing and want one. Having a house is a privilage not a right.

45 is more then generous I say 2 weeks should be the timer honestly. You know the risks involved if you go for a house and then plan to go away for a while. I find it funny these days that people expect things to be set in stone when in reality nothing is guaranteed at all in life and one should expect to lose a house due to unforeseen circumstances or decide to stop playing. At the end of the day you can say "well Yoshi P says to unsub and come back" but see there is a catch. You stop playing you forgo all rights therefore if you decide to quit or go away for a long time

That's where you get confused that SE is a company trying to make money. If everyone stopped playing FFXIV would cease to exist. There are people who play this game everyday while others decide to take a break every patch cycle. At the end of the day housing is a luxury not a right. Yeah you may have paid for it but it's like real life. If you don't pay your rent/mortgage you lose your house. They may "encourage" you to take a break but let's say for all intense and purposes they don't want you to.
