Gotta watch my stories! Ain't nobody gonna stop me from finishing my stories.
Their requests for basic competency are pretty much identical. XIV just tends to be even easier and even more straightforward in optimizing up to decent level of play (with its shared systems made a bit more obvious and perhaps slightly more homogeneous than their WoW analogs), thus making the requirements for basic competency a hair less demanding, depending on the job/spec.
Simply put,
will remain hypothetical only. The Role quests are less demanding than "typical content", which in turn falls well beneath the difficulty that the typical player can manage.
Then I am glad FFXIV isn’t like those MMOs. I come from a background of MMO’s where this isn’t the case. FFXI, GW2, SW:TOR. I’m of the mind that games should offer some level of challenge and objective and feels like there’s some adversity. Though I didn’t like GW2’s artificial difficulty approach, but either way, story is not a cakewalk there. And so many MMO’s aren’t worth comparing to because they are cookie cutter cash grab and go and are mindless as heck much like mobile games and the devs see it as easy money.
One of the reasons say, BDO never gripped was that with its super nice and fun and fluid battle system is that I can run through the world and obliterate everything and the quests I can just auto pilot because having done 30 levels into the game I’ve had to put no thought into combat or the story quests.
And in places I feel that actually FFXIV is too easy. In many places I don’t mind because it makes it accessible, and overall the game is kept fun and engaging. They strip the game and dumb it down more then I feel they would end up devaluing the game.
I think the problem here is what you are calling a reasonably skilled player.
MSQ and Role quest duties are literally the lowest bar, they require you to be able to press buttons and pay moderate attention to the screen. I am sorry to say if you find that they tested you at all then you should consider getting better at the game.
Honestly this just brings the whole debate on parsers and things again as FF has no real way of showing a player how they perform, so players assume they are of an average or above average skill level, when in reality a lot of players really underperform, but thats another story for another day.
I understand this was 'hypothetical' but the truth of it all is, the MSQ and Role quests have no semblence of challenge unless you have no gear at all, they are quite literally faceroll and can be completed by licking your keyboard.
Probably just needed more gear. I mongoed it on my DRK didnt do anything fancy and had no issues. I consider myself a casual.
It's clear you didn't read them either as pretty much everyone has told the OP to 'git gud' or stop playing. I'm also confused as to how you infer that I personally am not trying to improve and that I am 'playing the victim'? Perhaps you miss the irony of this? You are in fact doing what I said most on the forums do.
I would like to point out that, besides the recent addition to easier 'difficulties' for solo content (as unnecessary as it is), unless a fundamental change has happened, if you fail a particular solo duty enough over a specified period of time, the game actually gives you an echo bonus to make it even easier than it already was. If, even with this bonus, at a lower difficulty, you still proceed to have problems with whatever duty you are doing, then, clearly you need to practice on a target dummy and sort out what the problem is.
Doing any content with a group, wether it be casual maps or dungeon romps, to raids and trials, you have a responsibility to play your job at a reasonable level. Especially as a tank, as you said was your main(?). It isn't fair to waste other people's time in content when you cannot perform your job... adequately.
i beat the caster role quests with augmented scaevan gear on a summoner that didnt even have skills unlocked past level 30 cuz i never bothered doing the quests (i leveled acn for sch)
the bar of these quests is literally on the floor if someone missing half their skills and with gear 10 levels lower can beat them
This is just a general, broad response, I'm not replying to anyone's comments in particular, or being overtly specific.
I typically despise game combat, in any game. I like creating stuff, building, having funs with the family (it's one great way for me to do things with my daughter, that's for sure), that sort of thing. So I can easily understand when someone says, they don't like the combat and they just want to engage in the story. Sometimes you do get hooked into a thread and want to follow it, even if it means doing things you don't like/enjoy/find hard. The reason I stick around here is not because of combat; I have no need to challenge myself in that way, or prove anything to myself. I know my limits, and some things will never get better, even with practice. But because I know those limits, I will not be endagering anyone's savage or extremes or whatever. I love that there's that stuff for the people who enjoy it, but my enjoyment is found in different places the game provides. I like that I can (generally) take my sweet time to get things done, and most things are quite accessible. I've said to my husband from the get-go, all I want to do is keep our FC/private house in good repair and decor, and make furniture for a living. Occasionally go fishing for big fish (this is the ONE TRUE ENDGAME, by the way). Craft my gear, take my time and enjoy the scenary. The MSQ is (if not for the story I enjoy), the means to that end. I'm happy for a quiet(er) life.
That said, apparently I've sunk 3500 hours or thereabouts into this. It's probably a drop in the pond compared to many people, but I think it's testament to the fact that I do like this place a lot. I also know I got better at the combat, simply by wanting to be at least passable when having to work with others. I take that quite seriously! I'm nowhere near some other people, for sure, and I don't think I'll get much better, but it's certainly enough, for me and to get through story stuff, and usually so I'm not a burden in a mandatory trial.
I believe there's room for everyone, really there is. Just a little effort is required sometimes if a particular duty is hard for whatever reason. We're all different with different experiences and perspectives; no one is a better human being just because they do or do not get through one bit of content. An MMO is not a traditional game in one sense, it's a themepark thing because to keep in business it wants to offer many things to many people. So it's completely normal if there are parts of it that some people do not get, do not like, have issues with, and it's completely normal if there's parts of it that some people love, adore, want to keep riding on over and over until they're sick and then get back on to do it all again. You're not a greater individual for going on that big rollercoaster over there, and you're not a lesser individual if you go on it and find it total nightmare you'll avoid in the future.
My only caveat is if you are going to play with other people, you need to work to be the absolute best you can be and to be totally realistic about it. Be honest and understand how you operate when it comes to these things. Tool tips are awesome. Asking people here is awesome (yeah, you'll get people who are clearly having bad days responding, but that's par for the course and it reflects more on them than someone asking a question. They just need hugs and a cup of tea). Watching a video on something before taking part in it is awesome prep if you know you're slow at picking things up on the fly. Not wasting other people's time is awesome. Think less of your self, and more of others when it comes to this. Don't do it when you're having a crappy day.
Also, if you're going to ask on a game's forum about a particular duty you're not doing well in, perhaps phrase it as "I'm having a situation in Duty X, I'm failing X mechanic, how do I not fail X? Thanks" rather than "X IS 2 HARDDd! HWO DId ThIS paSS Qa?!?!?" because that's setting up the forum cannons like it's 1812.
I love how someone mentioned TSW earlier. For story and atmosphere, it's probably my favourite game ever. It's what I always wanted to pootle about in. The combat was, however, effing terrible and a blight on humanity. TSWLegends reworked the combat so it's bearable. Still horrid, but bearable. I had a blast playing through it, and it's my current back up if I have to drop my sub here for a month or so, as I have more to do there.
Anyhoo, enough of me burbling on and wanting everyone to be kind and excellent to each other. I have an airship to continue! (thank you so, so very much, SE, for allowing us small (3-person, only 2 subbed, family-) FCs to craft these things without needing to drag poor people off the streets! I love my new workshop!)
Have a great day, everyone. :)
I'm not gonna lie here either, I didn't get any new scholar skills until about level 75 or 76 (somewhere in there) when I leveled it. All I had at the time was my level 50 skillset. I was healing dungeons, and I didn't want to do DPS queues on summoner.
I think I may have talked about this on here before. Can't remember. No I did, still relevant. Drunk on life.
