Ever since the mentor system was introduced, I've encountered a few "mentors" who have been the bane of my White Mage existence.

One recent example, in Castrum Meridianum, a Machinist "mentor" decided he wanted to play tank. He was running around pulling the trash before the tank. I was struggling very hard to heal him, the other healer was only using regen and Medica II the entire time (and using holy too far from the mobs to actually even hit them), and the poor tanks were trying to control the mobs. We almost wiped.

Right before the final boss I decided to stop healing this "mentor" tank-wannabe and let him die. And refused to raise him. The first time I've ever done that.

And I've encountered tank "mentors" in low level dungeons who think they can pull all the trash at once and expect me to heal with 5 or more mobs on them. With only "Cure" and "Medica I" it just isn't going to happen.

Tiferets. Every mechanic? 2 Tiferets before you get hit with another mechanic in Phase 1. It really hurts, and it drains MP a lot. I've had to use Medica II to get over it along with Assize at times when moving. 6k damage going out is a lot to deal with, but probably is something that i220 can beat, honestly.

If you want an actual story, I had this one time in Stone Vigil where the tank decides to pull everything and the kitchen sink to the room on the right before the room you have to cross over, and he even pulled the Aevis that decides to poke its head out the door! Wiped there even with Eye for an Eye added since the tank didn't use any CDs(it was a DRK). Thankfully he learned from his lesson when I taught him how to gauge your healer and pull accordingly.

SephEx phase 1 is incredibly predictable; you can literally do the same exact rotation over and over again and be successful (give or take a few people standing outside of your AOE range). Yeah, it can be MP intensive, but fortunately you have what is essentially sitting around forever and ever and ever between the end of Phase 2 and start of phase 3 to recover, as well as about a full minute at the start of Phase 3 and post wind-phase to get MP back if you need it.

On WHM, my rotation from memory goes something like
Regen -> Cure I -> Divine Seal -> Medica II -> Medica -> Cure II -> Regen
Jumps
Medica II -> Medica -> Medica if necessary due to low iLevels, otherwise just sit an Asylum down on Seph's butt and let people sit at 4k HP while he winds up that tankbuster, Asylum will do the work for you -> Stoneskin that tankbuster -> Shroud of Saints (important! Your hate builds up pretty quickly on WHM, this may need to be done a step or two earlier if your tanks aren't the best and I know I've caused a few wipes due to turning him in this section right as he cleaves) -> Cure II -> Cure I

Blobs
The key trick to WHM about blobs is twofold:
1. Use your Divine Seal early in the battle, as I have it there on the first line. If you do it right after that first buster, it'll be back up in time for blobs. Use Divine Seal Medica II while you're standing between Seph and the Ein Sof.
2. Swiftcast.

Sprint to your place. Swiftcast once there -> run to the middle of the room with sprint on once they explode -> Medica -> Medica -> Medica -> Medica (this one may or may not be necessary depending on your off healer, usually you won't need it unless your SCH is never leaving Cleric except for an Indom and Succor or two) -> Stoneskin that buster -> Cure II -> Cure I/II/Tetra
Medica II while everyone positions themselves for jumps.

Rinse, repeat.

The key thing really is to use your Swiftcast Medicas after the blobs. I'm not saying save your Assize, if anything, I'm in the bad habit of saving mine, but Swiftcast is a very important tool here.

But really, it is very predictable and once you get used to the damage it's not bad. It was pretty hard for me at 210, but once I hit 215 it was easy. Now that I'm at 220 all over, I'm very safe in phase 1 and am getting that overgeared feeling. The 210 HP is just so squishy. I don't have a static, I got my practice, clear, and farms all via PF.

Plus if the damage are shared healed between both heal it doesn't eat your mana XD
Solo heal as whm will hurt
Only the AST and his cheated mana regen can solo heal it without entering add phase with low mana
(That's why I run it as AST now)

Had a tank drk wearing i125/135 in sirius HM for expert duty roulette. 15k Hp, while I have 14k myself. Some of the trash-mobs autoattacks were hitting him down to below 3k in just one hit.

Thank you for the clarification, Noxifer! Yes, that's the one, it usually happens right after clearing second set of slime/blob adds and is not avoidable.

Doesn't that not meet min requirement to get in the roulette? if i remember correctly even the fractal continuum had min requirement higher than that...

Min ilvl is 170 for Pharos. I can kinda see someone being able to hack though that via i220 accessories combined with i135 left side and then switching to more tank like accessories at i135 once they're in.

When it happened to me for Arboretum during 3.1, the guy had like a 145 weapon, 200 Void Ark body, and 210 accessories. I didn't check the rest of his gear after that, I was too busy spamming Cure II on everyone because his ability to keep hate was non-existent.

Yes, it was a mix of 135/220. The guy was wearing the sephiroth weapon, probably earned with another job (weapon counts twice to calculate the ilvl). I wish there was some sort of gear-check when you sign up for a dungeon. Not just the ilvl.
Also, I noticed lately that a large proportion of players - usually Damage dealers - use accessories from other jobs so as to meet the requirements.
When you ask them why, sometimes they are polite enough to just explain that they need it to enter the dungeon. Sometimes I just get insulted and replied that "they're here precisely to gear up", and that I should shut up basically. No big deal. I keep going, I don't need to hear dramas in my roulettes. Should they die from an Aoe they didn't dodge, they'll stay on the ground until I decide I need them back on their feet. You know, the true "I carry you and leave on dead in shame" spirit. I'd rather 3-man the entire thing.

Can't they just spend 30 minutes, run Gordas 5 times and get some i190 gear ? Nope. Can't they just spend a run or two in Fractal or Neverreap ? Nope.

As much as it would be nice that the weapon count for a higher weighted % of the ilvl, the ilvl calculation unfortuantely is just an average of all the pieces (unless this has changed recently, would love to be corrected).

I can kinda understand looking to push ilvl to past a certain threshold then swapping out to more appropriate pieces of gear so the player in question isn't a complete hindrance to the run but I'm looking more at the person is 10 ilvls below the cap at most. I actually was doing Sephi EX on DRG @ i203 at one point because I didn't have the appropriate gear score on DRG but my group needed a melee DPS so I swapped in a few healing accessories to temporarily bypass the limit then swapped back to STR accessories afterwards. I would probably do something similar for L60/EX DR as long as my ilvl wasn't too low because I'm pretty confident that despite being under ilvl I can still beat most DPS in DR as long as my ilvl wasn't dramatically below the min cap (and I'm rocking a decent to good weapon).

That being said, people running -35 to -45 ilvls under min need to GTFO and yes, gear up somewhere else. It's a shame gearing is so RNG dependent since you can't guarantee specific accessories / winning Gordian pieces (let alone what the queue time might be) though at least Eso pieces are fairly cheap now since they reduced the cost of Eso pieces this patch so it's not too hard to grab a few i200 pieces in that respect.

I had a DRK in Antitower with i145 weapon and helmet (rest was a random mish mash of i180s to i200s). It wasn't terrible persay.. but he most certainly had issues holding hate because of the i145 weapon. It didn't help he decided he wanted to mass pull entire hallways despite being completely new the dungeon. You'd think if you were new and had only an i145 weapon you'd want to keep the pulls normal since enmity was going every-which-way.

I'm pretty positive that the weapon counts twice for calculating the ilvl, to make up and keep a fair "result" for everyone who can't equip shields (Paladins nowadays, but also smn / whm in 2.x) I think it's been the case since 2.x something.

You know what, that's a good point about the shield bit. I'll have to go check some time today after work just to be sure since I want to know with absolute certainty.

Yeah, two-handed weapons count twice, since they occupy two slots -- even if it's not visible. I do wish they'd add that two-handed weapons add a "transparent" icon of the weapon in the offhand slot as well to make it more obvious ^^;

The Test

So I basically took off every single piece of gear I had except for my Seraph Cane (ilvl 210) on WHM. There are three potential calculations for ilvl:

1. If weapon counts as a single slot and there are twelve pieces of equipment (we exclude the shield / offhand slot)
   floor(210/12) = 17
   
2. If weapon counts as a single slot and there are thirteen pieces of equipment
   floor(210/13) = 16
   
3. If weapon counts for two slots (because two handed weapon) and there are thirteen pieces of equipment
   floor(420/13) = 32

End result?

Rolled Gubal in levelling roulette. First thing I notice, the tank HP drops horrendously fast. I check her gear, up to date on right and lvl 54/55 gear on left. That wasn't so bad, certainly i've seen worse, but the standard idiot tank applies, no GCDs used except for Fight or Flight and Bulwark, no Oaths used (ARGH!!!). We tell her to use Shield Oath. No response. No Circle of Scorn used. No flash used. Just a shield lob and the standard 123 on each mob on her. Everyone and their mother, except the tank, had aggro. Hellacious mess, and I wasn't ready to deal with this after midnight. Ate my penalty and went to bed. >\

Honestly i feel this is more of an issue than ilv with tanks. I've had a tank in lv50 roulette once with fresh 50+AF gear (the ilv 55 version) and ilv 25-20s accessories. So i "suggested" almost every other pull during our run that he should update his gear. But he knew what he was doing, pulled big and didn't lose hate to our lv capped DPS. That i applaud, at the very least he knew how to tank. Now on to those tanks at lv 50 and 60, still a 1-mob tank, still don't have provoke?!? come on...

Oh of course, I don't deny that it's more of the player than gear, although the latter does play some part. I think I should have been clearer with that.
I was just annoyed that there seems to be more of such tanks (or maybe it's just my bad luck), who don't use their GCDs, or even know the basics of tanking, at such an advanced level. :X

If he doesn't have the gear coming into a dungeon, does it magically appear whenever somebody suggests he wear what he doesn't have? Mentioning it once is fine, but multiple times in a single dungeon is just being assinine.

If he's doing lvl 50 roulette he should at least have the ilvl 90 AF gear since that is a reward for thr lvl 50 job quest, which he should have done anyway. The tank has no excuse to be using ilvl 55 AF gear.

This isn't technically much of a horror story as it ended well, but it left me a bitter taste in my mouth. I'm now levelling SCH to 60, had to do the Vault to get some EXP, i get in everyone says hi, except the tank. Just from that i knew what type of tank they were going to be. She doesn't even wait for buffs and runs off. First few pulls i notice: NO COOLDOWNS, only a few and quite rarely. the first few pulls go fine, except for the fact i had to heal her, a LOT. We arrive at first boss, guess what?, she doesn't even wait for a single Stoneskin or Succor pre-boss. She, for some reason, turns on Sword Oath instead of Shield Oath, as if she wasn't receiving much damage already (i even looked at her gear, it was all quite high level). continues like this until after the 2nd boss (to note that in 90% of the pulls she didn't wait for me and almost got killed a few times), where she asked the Ninja why they weren't using Doton a lot, so i, since i was quite angry atm i called her out on not using cooldowns instead. After that, she FINALLY started using cooldowns and the rest of the run went smooth.

That is only the case since HW. If he had leveled that class to 50 before it, and let it hibernate before starting on it now, he would only have the i55 relic pieces.

The player could have buy some ilevel 115 NQ stuff in ishgard
Even NQ it's better than ilevel55 XD

And if he doesn't have it, he's not going to get it while still in the dungeon with you. Why mention it more than once?

Been a really long time since I posted here, but I finally got one I want to share.

Antitower. Usually routine and boring, and it was going to be until the tank instantly dropped after the first pull. Don't know why. Not going to try to guess why, but the entire run changed from there. It turned into a three man survival mode with just me, a monk, and a black mage. Since the enemies are so wimpy in Antitower, I could actually heal tank multiple at once while healing the others through one or two targets they nabbed. But we wiped on the pull before the first boss because the frog tamer guy died first and all four mobs hit me with a paralysis combo. Oh well, we pick ourselves up, come back, and finish off the stuff that didn't die.

First boss. Got a tank yet? Nope. I started off tanking it from healing aggro and ended up taking a toy hammer to the face. But I knew it was gonna happen so I threw asylum and regen on myself with DS and sat through his entire attack while stunned. Barely lived, healed up. Survived multiple chorus cycles by hotting the group up before I got frogged. Only one guy was free to dps each cycle. At one point, the black mage lagged out while being the only one free. Without regen and medica II stacked, it would have been a wipe. Anyway, the boss goes down soon after that. Moving on.

We clear the trash with me tanking up to 4 or 5 things at some points, spam healing myself while dodging aoes and pretending to be a tank who isn't wearing cardboard. We eventually get to Ziggy. Right after we start it, a tank comes in. But even if he wasn't locked out, he was absolutely useless. He had been trying to join in progress for friends or something and asked to be kicked. I really should have left him in the group to suffer with us, but I hesitantly agree to kick him after the boss because I need to concentrate on healing. The useless tank is apparently okay with this because he's still there after the boss goes down and I promptly boot him.

Next set of trash. I get into a one on one staff vs axe duel with a wind up viking while the dps kill a magus. The pulls go well until the last room, where the dps focus on one of the little guys on the two centaur, two little guy pull and I take too much damage. Second wipe. We come back, I tell the monk to go acquaint himself with one of the centaurs because two at once plus a viking is more than I can apparently handle. It works, I tank the other three while they burn down the first centaur, then the second, then the little guys.

Last boss. Got a tank yet? What, that's crazy talk. We go in. I'm fully expecting to die because knockout is really strong and even takes a decent chunk off of tanks. I was right. Monk gets confused and proceeds to join the boss in beating me to paste when it uses knockout. They pounce on me at the exact same time and I go from 100% to 0% faster than you can say "green eggs and ham."

After the wipe, the three of us cry behind our monitors and dance with each other in game. A tank who isn't a useless waste of space finally shows up. Asks us what happened, I tell him, he's dumbfounded. We take out the boss and the monk wishes us a good night.

Tank: Thanks for the easy lore.
Me: Hardest Lore ever.

Aurum Vale, for once I don't que as scholar because I was one step away from DRG 60 and my tank friend was leveling DKR, we just decided to roll roulette as we were. We all say hello to each other and the first pull goes actually well, but -and I'm sorry but I keep an eye on hps even as dps- I notice the heals are low and knowing my friend I know it's unusual to see him struggle to keep his hp high, especially in such a map.

After the first boss (that went smoothly because we all knew what to do, even if the hp was always on the low side) we wipe. And wipe. My friend just can't stay alive, leeches aren't used and at some point the healer goes all "sorry, all my gear is broken".

We suggest the healer to put on older gear, because it's definitely better than broken gear, but she has one. Me, dps and tank sigh and proceed. Wipex2 and she just goes afk after saying "go ahead, my fairy will heal you".->

In a sync vale where she wasn't able to keep us alive while NOT being afk. Tank takes a few steps and we realize she's in follow and the whole group decides to wait.

She returns after almost 10 minutes and she's angry because we should have trusted the fairy, blah blah blah. That, and a few previous comments that made me understand how she wasn't even trying, made me 'snap'. I tried to be gentle but I mentioned her that having a fairy that heals isn't a 'scholar perk' and that in vale and higher dungeon it just doesn't work.

"What do you know?"
"I main scholar?"

She waits until we're in a fight to leave the party. After that I call in my healer friend and the rest of the run (a chamber and the last boss) and the rest goes smoothly but- it still felt off. Even because I don't think that such a behaviour helps too much with scholar repuration....

Jumped on WHM to do Leveling Roulette and got Library.
2nd trash pull I was out of mana, with assize and shroud both on cooldown.
The warrior required constant cure II spam to keep alive, massive damage spikes whenever she switched to deliverance, didn't use any defensive cooldowns.

Yes, there are bad warrior tanks out there. I would much rather have a half decent pally that makes the fight go 30 seconds longer than a shitty WAR any day.

Brayflox for duty roulette. As it popped, I saw the tank had less HP than anyone else, took a look, he wasn't wearing any accessories and low level gear overall. I asked politely if he could use some ("any will do"). No answer. Mch and I barely made it out alive from the first pull, as obviously he couldn't keep aggro. Asked again, politely again. Then I think it was a melee? asking me "You're a healer, why would you want those?" > "Because I don't intend on wiping for 45 minutes". Still no change, tanks keeps going, pulls again, and this time mch and I died from the trash that can silence us right before the first boss.

"Sorry, in fact, I'm not even gonna spend 5". Took the penalty happily.

Ever been in party with a supremely self-important DPS who thinks he's the core of the party and without him, the party will never be able to finish the instance?

Just ran into one such BLM in A6. Won't move from AoEs or charging robots, kept dying the moment he ressed. Eventually, we gave up raising him, only for him to start his verbal diarrhoea that healers suck, this party sucks, I've never died before, and you'll never clear A6 without me! And he left.

I'd hate to burst his bubble but we did finish A6 without him. And with a fresh new BLM that plays way better than the so-called mentor.

That reminds me of a BLM "mentor" I was in a party with recently. He kept running ahead of the tank, pulling the trash. I felt so bad for the tank. Then, instead of standing behind the tank, he would stand in front, further down the instance where more trash would latch onto him.

Tried to vote to remove him from the party, but you have to wait like a minute or something before casting the vote. After the first boss, tried again, but couldn't because there is loot in the loot table.
Everyone cast their lot, except for him. I think he knew that, and he was running ahead of the others to get more loot in that loot table before the old loot timer ran out. It was very hard to kick him.
Finally, the loot timer ran out about 1 second before the 2nd boss. He pulled the boss, but I managed to begin the vote. He was removed mid-fight.

I've had some bad experiences with "mentors". Now every time I see that crown, I put my guard up.

I was doing Midas (normal) farm with two of my FC tanks when one of them was disconnected (which led to an absolutely GLORIOUS 10-stack Brawler solo tank that was insanely fun to heal!). The other tank isn't too comfortable having a tank partner in a PuG for that sort of content however so I offered to be their WAR co-partner for a bit since said disconnected tank gave me a very shiny set of i220 crafted tank pieces a few days before.

So, we queue into M4.... with possibly what felt like the worst two healers I've ever had the pleasure to get in an 8-man content.

To put it short and sweet. I had to tank swap on Perpetual Ray in P1 with my tank because the healer's were slow as molasses when normally I can solo heal that without issue when I actually heal. Both of us would constantly fall to below 4-5K HP after each Perpetual Ray despite popping necessary cooldowns to weather the onslaught.

During the add phase in P2, I was basically left to solo-heal myself on WAR with the adds because for some reason, the two healers were just ignoring me or something. I eventually dropped to something like 2K-3K HP after popping everything I had to stay alive and then popped Holmgang before I got something in the realm of 20K in cures instantly which made me laugh and then roll my eyes.

People weren't getting topped off in P3 after missile split and heals were slow after each tank buster. Yes, some of the DPS weren't really dodging at times which I can understand but I can usually deal with that by myself without too much issue as a healer.

We wipe on P3 (I think we got Brute Justice down to 58% before his first split) and try again.

My tank partner literally dies to the first Perpetual Ray barrage due to no heals despite popping cooldowns. And then I basically die to the next one due to.. no heals despite popping cooldowns. We wipe in P1.

One of the healer's pipe up "So, learn how to f---ing dodge". I was tempted to give him the response "Learn to f---ing heal" but knew it wasn't worth the time. DPS started to drop and my tank partner and I dropped during that time and I decided to take a long shower to cool off.

Dungeon: Sunken Temple of Qarn
Me on AST. The dungeon started typically, Protect, food buff, then Draw.
Then the NIN DPS started the chat: "Tank, why are you not wearing your Soulstone?"
No reply. It was a bad sign. Went to our first mob pull, the "Tank" hit one of the bats and stayed with it. No enmity skills used. We tried reaching to him via Auto-translate but to no avail. We end up having the NIN tank for us. It was until just before the first boss that we decided for a vote kick. We never heard anything from the tank. We were waiting for any response in his defense for not wearing a job stone. We went through the dungeon without a proper tank. We were able to get the first two bosses down but took more time. A replacement tank came at the lst boss and were able to finish the dungeon. It still bugs me why our original "tank" is not wearing his soulstone. Maybe he just doesnt know how to get it...

I was leveling my AST there the other day as well and first pull the tank was...moving really strangely. Running partially up the stairs, then back to us, then further up, then back. It took him a full minute after buffs to do the first pull but ok, maybe he was just nervous? But then after that he tries to pull everything else up until the first boss, bees and all. Three bats must have suddenly boosted his self confidence but needless to say, we died horribly from /way/ too much incoming damage and mobs running everywhere because he wasn't holding them. Then without a word he drops from the dungeon. We get a new tank a few minutes later and life goes on. *slow head shake*

Leviathan eX, WHM co healer says she's an expert but as soon as we start I see her spamming aoes and collecting Briny mirror stacks like it's raining.
Ask her to swap, not really necessary since everyone had medica II running, hp were at max and all things were good. (I dps adds if there are no health issues so cleric stance was on), no reply and she quickly hit the max number of BM one can handle and we tell her goodbye, I proceed to single heal with Eos. We wipe, still no reply but I explain her what Briny Mirror does and she apparently listens because the problem is gone.

After that we still wiped 6 times because "stop dps" seems to be read as "MoRE DPS, MORE, TAKE DOWN LEVIATHAN ASAP" by the blm but... eh, we manage to clear that one time the dps fell down. (Now, guess who got the mirror drop!)

It was supposed to be a pony farm, btw. (I was in to help a friend of mine, I already have the horse)

Nightmare SepEx party with a healer that clearly didn't know what he was doing.

In summary:

- Diurnal sect because 2 regens are better than 1
Party asked why he wasn't in Noct Sect and he said the WHM's med 2 was too weak to regen quickly and shields were useless (facepalm max)

- Sephirot saps MP, we have to keep MP high (WTH?)
Excessive overhealing, nuff' said

- No need for top up, SS or shielding on MT for tank buster because "2 regens can keep MT alive" (Clearly, MT can survive a tank buster with only 3k hp.)
When asked why MT was never topped off before tank buster. Clearly, he has way too much confidence in regens.

- If party takes too much damage, it's their fault for not upgrading gears / bringing pots
On why he wasn't helping WHM to aoe heal / top off party's health

- If party cannot survive with 2 healers, it's ok to bring a 3rd as a dps/healer
After ranting about how poor the party's healing capabilities is, he suggests that someone else brings a healer.


I seriously doubt that healer cleared as he claimed, or he was carried by players with god-like patience.
