Thanks, I'll add that right now.
I'm sure you guys notice above a graveyard of deleted posts. >.> I realized I could just edit a post to make it longer than 1000 characters, and it looks much better all as one post. I'll see if a mod can remove all those delete notices.
Ardbob, I noticed you mentioned Gold Saucer already but an addition to that if I may, there are actually more references in that to FFVII than just the name of the place.
FFVII: the 'Mount Corel' area in Round Square in Gold Saucer in FFXIV is of course a reference to the area of the same name in FFVII (in FFVII it's near where the Gold Saucer is actually located). Both versions of Gold Saucer are located in mountainous desert areas, and when you first arrive at Gold Saucer you arrive on an airship and the scene shows the ship flying up to it, just like arriving at FFVII's Gold Saucer for the first time on the cable car.
As well, three music tracks that play inside FFXIV's Gold Saucer are taken from FFVII (or rather, they're remixes) - the eponymous theme Gold Saucer is fittingly GS's main zone theme, plus a remix of Electric de Chocobo plays during GATEs (in FFVII it was the track that played when encountering a chocobo in battle and also played during the snowboarding minigame), and fittingly, a remix of Fiddle de Chocobo plays during the Chocobo Races, which was also where it played in FFVII.
Yes the Chocobo Theme is a reoccurring track, but these versions were actually remixes of specific FFVII versions of these tracks so I thought they were worth mentioning. :)
FFVIII: Triple Triad is of course an improved version of the card game of the same name from FFVIII, including many of the same rules, like Same and Random. Even the music when playing a TT match is from FFVIII, Nobuo Uematsu's Shuffle or Boogie.
And speaking of Triple Triad, it should go without saying that the protagonists of nearly every previous FF game show up as special TT cards. ;)
There's probably more, but that's what I can remember at the moment. Anyway, awesome work putting this together! :D
The final boss in Amdapor Keep Hard mode is a tribute to Kefka from FF6 (his posture is similar, he has a white make-up look face with markings on it. And resembles a vizier like Kefka.
https://riikorinkoko.files.wordpress...ep-hard-07.jpg
http://community.us.playstation.com/...75F3C?v=mpbl-1
And they both share a maniacal laugh:
Dissidia Kefka laugh
Amdapor Keep boss laugh
Also on the notes of the FF12:
Confirmed
Elidibus (Emissary) - Zodiark
Lahabrea - Mateus (the sigil on his mask matches that of a portion of the sigil of Mateus from FF12)
Pashtarot - Zeromus
Igeyorhm - Shemhazai
Altima - Ultima
Emmerololth - Famfrit
Nabriales - Cúchulainn (again his mask sigil is a portion of Cuchulainn's sigl from FF12, furthermore Nabriales send's adventurer's to a place where status effects are increased times 10 following along the lines of Cuchulainn being a master of status effects (his alignment was poison and was charged to "absorb" all the filth of the world in the lore of FF12)
Speculated
Loghrif - Belias (we've seen Belias-egi in the SMN story missions and while the Ascian who summoned him is not mentioned his mask sigil is a portion of Belias's sigil from FF12)
Mitron - Chaos
Emet-Selch - Zalera
Fandaniel - Hashmal
Halmarut - Exodus
Deudalaphon - Adrammelech
Each Ascian is a direct reference name to 12's Scion of Light and their mask sigil/glyph is the creature of which they opposed. This information can be found in the Clan Primer in FF12.
Don't know if added but Jessie was in ff7 she appears in ffxiv after receiving the Magitek mount, and gives players the option to add the "attacks" inside cids warehouse.
http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2...Jessie_XIV.png
She is in the opening bombing mission in ff7
Here's one I realized a week ago or so.
Final Fantasy 5: The first boss in Sastasha Hard Mode, Karlabos, is a direct reference to the boss in Torna Canal. Its signature move is Tail Screw, and looks identical.

EDIT: Oh yeah, since it hasn't been mention yet,
Final Fantasy 1: Female Paladin's idle pose is identical to Warrior of Light's idle pose in Dissidia: Final Fantasy. (Most other Idle poses are based off Dissidia idle poses, but it's late and ill describe them later maybe)
http://i.imgur.com/zH4gR5Y.jpg
http://i.imgur.com/6ilzyDN.png
@Mirakumi: Yep, that's already on the list. :P
@Zell1226: I'l add the Karlabos reference as part of a group of references to various FF5 bosses. I'm not so sure about the idle pose thing. The pose looks similar yeah, but the pose isn't really unique enough to consider it a real reference. Probably just a coincidence.
I did some research and have found a whopping 37 new references that I've added to the list. Here they are:
Final Fantasy 1
1. Kraken appears as a boss in both Hullbreaker Isle and Sastasha (Hard).
Final Fantasy 2
1. The "Dreadnought", a Garlean ship, is a reference to a warship of the same name in Final Fantasy 2.
(I also fixed the link in the first point)
Final Fantasy 3
1. The Summoner's Artifact Armor is called "Evoker's _____", which is a reference to the job Evoker from Final Fantasy 3.
2. All weapons that can be purchased with Rowena Tokens (Soldiery) are named after weapons from Final Fantasy 3.
Final Fantasy 4
1. The weather vane in the Heavensward cinematic is shaped like the original Final Fantasy 4 logo.
2. The Bard relic weapon, Artemis' Bow, is said to have been crafted by Gilbert (the japanese name for Edward Chris von Muir).
3. In the first and second turns of Binding Coil of Bahamut you fight the ADS boss and its nodes. These are based on the CPU from Final Fantasy 4.
4. Allagan buildings like Binding Coil of Bahamut have similar interior decorating to the Tower of Babil.
Final Fantasy 5
1. Sastasha is heavily influenced by the Pirates' Hideout and both locations are the first dungeon of each game.
2. The Forgotten Springs in Southern Thanalan is a village of mostly female Miqo'te dressed in ancient clothing. This is likely a reference to Mirage Village from Final Fantasy 5.
3. In the guildhest "Hero on the Halfshell" you have to sedate a "Gil Turtle" which can also be found in the Gil Cave in Final Fantasy 5.
4. Twintania (Turn 5 BCoB), Melusine, (Turn 2 BCoB), Catoblepas (Halatali Hard), Halicarnassus (Haukke Manor Hard), and Karlabos (Sastasha Hard) are all named after bosses from Final Fantasy 5. (credit: Zell1226)
Final Fantasy 6
1. The 2013 Halloween event includes a man named "The Impressario" which is a reference to a man of the same name in the Opera House of Final Fantasy 6.
2. The nation-state of Doma is based on a nation of the same name in Final Fantasy 6.
3. In one of the Ixal quests an airship named Blackjack appears.
4. Ultros and Typhon are optional bosses in the Hildibrand sidequests, using direct quotes from Final Fantasy 6 at several points.
5. During the battles with Ultros and Typhon, "The Decisive Battle" from Final Fantasy 6 plays.
6. Setzer Gabbiani's outfit can be bought at the Gold Saucer.
Final Fantasy 7
1. During the "Dreams of Ice" missions, Yda can be found competing at squats with Hoary Boulder.
Final Fantasy 8
1. Zell's tattoo is available as an option in Character Creation.
2. The "Double" and "Triple" spells used by Nabriales are from Final Fantasy 8.
Final Fantasy 9
1. In Aleport (Western La Noscea) you can find a winged mermaid statue that very closely resembles the figurehead of the Prima Vista airship.
2. When unsheathed, "The Majestic Moogle Mogtome", an Arcanist weapon, takes the appearance of a moogle writing in a book, closely resembling the Save Moogles of Final Fantasy 9.
Final Fantasy 10
1. Garlean machines are referred to as "machina" much like in Final Fantasy 10.
2. Soul crystals are a very similar concept to dresspheres from Final Fantasy 10-2.
Final Fantasy 11
1. The Pugilist's Guild quests makes a reference to Cornelia, who founded the guild. Cornelia was a monk in Final Fantasy 11.
2. The artifact and vintage armor sets for all jobs are identical to the names of the artifact armor sets in Final Fantasy 11.
3. The final boss of Snowcloak, Fenrir, looks much like Fenrir from Final Fantasy 11 and even uses similar moves.
Final Fantasy 12
1. The final boss of Stone Vigil (Hard Mode) is Giruveganaus.
2. The beast tribe Gnath closely resmble Urutan-Yensa.
3. In the minion guide, the King Tomato minion has a quote attributed to Tomaj.
Final Fantasy 13
1. Jandelaine, the aesthetician, starts his service by turning a female Lalafell's hair into Lightning's hairstyle.
2. In Coerthas there is a quest "Rolling with the Snowies" in which a snowman says "Revolutionaries always get called crazy", which is a line used by Fang in Final Fantasy 13.
3. During the 2014 Halloween event, an NPC uses the phrase "Sugar and Rainbows" which was used by Sazh Katzroy.
4. The Gold Saucer side quest "So you think you can ride this chocobo" is a reference to the lyrics of the "Crazy Chocobo" theme.
Final Fantasy Type-O
1. The imperial salute of the Garlean Emprire is the samea s the Millitesi Empre salute in Type-O.
Final Fantasy Tactics
1. The cowardly merchant Ungust says at one point, "Spare me your contempt! If you want to blame someone for the the world's in, blame yourselves or the gods!" This is a direct quote from Delita Heiral at the beginning of the playstation version of Final Fantasy Tactics.
Male dragoons alternate weapon drawn pose is the same pose from the famous artwork of yoshitaka amano's Kain Highwind pose. FF4
A lot of these text based references are things the EN lore team could've just decided to throw in on a whim. I'm curious if the other languages have as many or even more references than we do...
"2. The adventures from version 1.0 are called "Warriors of Light"."
This is not true, you are called a WoL regardless of whether or not you are a Legacy player. The first time this is mentioned in story is the level 15 quests where Raubahn says you are one of them too, even if you are a 2.0 player.
Anyway.
VII: Shinra and Garlemald share a similar origin in the sense that they both started small and insignificant, until they figured out how to use the world's dominant element (Ceruleum is a refined form of Aether) to their advantage and exploded in power.
I think this is mostly covered by the part where I talk about their AF armor being modeled after Kain's armor, but I'll add a note about the pose as well.
I know that all adventurers are Warriors of Light. I worded that badly. I'll fix it right now.
It's a somewhat generic backstory for a villainous empire so I don't know if I'd consider it a reference to Shinra specifically. I'll put it under Possible References.
The job crystals in XIV seem like a direct reference to the job crystals in V. They housed souls of past warriors of light.
For FF7 the Jessie reference is still missing.
They introduced her in 2.3 in the Main Story.
More reference in her Wiki entry.
http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/Jessie
We can also see Biggs using a security console to open a gate in the Processing Plant much like in the start of FF7: http://i.imgur.com/BrlKQMI.jpgQuote:
1. The Ceruleum Processing Plant might be purposely similar to the Mako Reactors from Final Fantasy 7. (credit: aranwade)
Hiya,
You mentioned that Typhon and Ultros from FFVI are present, but you didn't mention that Dragon's Den is an area previously found in the GBA re-release of FFVI.
Unei, Doga and their theme, were lifted from FF3.
nice list but i noticed a few things were inncorrect :3
"12. The song that plays during a game of Triple Triad is a remixed version of "Shuffle or Boogie""
thats slightly wrong it is the exact same song :3 it hasn't been changed in the slightest :D
"The Ascian Lahabrea's name is a reference to the esper from Final Fantasy 12. (credit: slatervonjager)"
also incorrect, Lahabrea is the name of the esper of Light Oppsitting The esper of dark metaus, Nabriales continues this as he is the esper of light to Cúchulainn
"1. For a limited period of time, Lightning appeared in a series of FATEs. You could even obtain hers or Snow's outfits (depending on your gender)."
Outside of this limited event when you d the quest to unlock the astatitian he will always cut the lalafell's hair into a green version of lightning's hair
also the garlean empire, seems to be a mix of 3 empires from the final fantasy series, the empire from ffII, (with it being led by a large man in very eccentric style clothing and hairstyle and being mostly machine based), The galbainia army from FFVIII, (due to there use of gunswords) and they can be compared to the Rozarrian Empire of Final fantasy XII the new emperor of garlamald looks similar to Vain solidor in his power up state (said by a friend of mine) as well as there extensive use of airships as a main fortress (shown with the argile that was destroyed by midgarsomrr) as well as sharing the trait of using captsule's that creates magic rather then using the 'magic's' themselves.
EDIT TO ADD ONE MORE: The male miqo'te /pose, and Idle pose is similar to Vaan's pose. even there /streatch is the same as vaan's prefer way of stretching which he dose a few times in ffXII
In the same vein for FF6's Riot Blade Entry, Ninja also has Spinning Edge (Celes' Desperation Attack) as well as Shadow Fang (Shadow's Desperation).
I just hope that we get Mirage Dive on Ninja for the next batch of abilities =D
This is related to the Krile reference. She's mentioned as being part of the Students of Baldesion (haven't heard about those "Sons" of Baldesion, you sure it's not a typo?); the Students also are resident in the Isle of Bal. Castle Bal is the original name of FFV's Val Castle
This portion of the Good King Moggle Mog theme starting at 2:15 here is part of the Moogle Theme from FFV and FFVI.
This was such a nostalgic great read during my lunch break, and I was pleasantly surprised to see even though this thread was started back in 2013 when the game released that the OP has been updating the contents! Even with Golden Saucer info!!
Kudos to you. I apparently liked this thread back when it was created, but I wish I could like it again.
That being said...
Reference Addition:
I feel slighted to say the least that after this thread being open for this long, that a pretty glaring Final Fantasy 12 reference is not in the list. Zodiark, who is the counterpart of Hydaleyn in FFXIV, was taken (in name, and most likely in strength) directly from Final Fantasy 12. Zodiark was the most powerful Esper in Final Fantasy 12, and was also the very last Hunt mob you fought. The pinnacle of your power in Final Fantasy 12 was tested by defeating Zodiark.
edit: Just saw this in the list under "Major Spoilers" lol....makes sense. Ignore all of ^ :D
And just to nitpick a bit, in your Final Fantasy 8 section of references you have that you can get Zell's tattoo in character creation in two different spots on the list. #4 and #13. (i really did read all of these lol)
Great list!!!
I didn't find this on the list, but I might have missed it, but either way:
Joseph, an NPC standing in the Chocobo Square of the FFXIV Gold Saucer, is a direct reference to Joe in FFVII chocobo racing, who was one of the hardest chocobos to beat in FFVII, having stats that literally always exceeded yours, regardless of how good of a chocobo you got. Joe actually appears as an NPC opponent on two different occasions in the actual FFXIV minigame as well. He appears in R-220 riding a chocobo named Toho Fuhai. He also appears in R-300, the highest possible class, racing his FFVII chocobo, a black chocobo named Teioh.
I saw that the AK(HM) boss reference was moved to possible references. I'd like to point out the excerpt from the FFXIV journal entry "For Keeps Sake" (AKHM quest)
He is dressed in jester (harlequin) garb, same as Kefka, shares a similar laugh, same posture, summons "Jesters" does a move called Jester's Reap. Dalamud Cult is usually represented as a group who merely wanted to end Eorzea for the sake of its destruction, much like Kefka (he merely wanted to destroy the world to destroy it). I'd say too much similarity for it to be a possibility. There is only ONE villain in the whole FFU that has a laugh like that, its iconic and clearly a tribute/nod to the famous villain. Just saying.Quote:

In the Syrcus Tower, Xande's ability "Burning Rave" is a reference to one of Zell Dincht's limit breaks from Final Fantasy VIII.
How has this not been added:
FFXI Reference for Smallshell minion
Description "The mere sight of this wee wavekin may cause severe psychological trauma to those who spent years of their lives on faraway shores culling his relatives."
This refers to Valkurm Dunes parties in FFXI
In the benchmark video, there's that scene where everyone is on their flying mounts.
There's a flying whale monster that attacks that looks a lot like Sin from FFX.
Not in the game proper yet, but the design is very similar.
Nutkin minion is specific to FFV. http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/N...inal_Fantasy_V)
Also its deadlier cousin, the skull eater. http://finalfantasy.wikia.com/wiki/S...inal_Fantasy_V) Who you'd run into in groups of 5 and would randomly auto-kill their target. !@#$ those guys.
That isn't Sin though, although it is from a past FF game - it's actually Bismarck from FFVI.
Gilgamesh wielded the Masamune in FFVIII though so if anything this is actually a reference to his previous appearance there and thus has nothing to do with Sephiroth.
It's been bugging me for a while but aint the twins Alphinaud & Alisaie a slight reference to the twins Palom and Porom? At the least that one picture on the wiki has him holding a black book while she is holding a white one. Considering Palom was a black mage and Porom was a White mage in FF2 (us ver.)
Oh yea, that's right. Forgot about Bismarck.
Well, Sin might be inspired by Bismarck a little. The whale design isn't that common.
On the Masamune, the appearance with him using it is probably is the most direct reference. Though I might put Masamune on the general trope as well because it appears in so many games.
Oh yeah, he also has a sword (pic: bottom left) which is the exact model of FFXI's very sought-after (at least before 75 cap was broke) Ridill.
http://img1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2...esh_Render.jpg
That and their hairstyles seem to also be slightly influenced from FF4's Palom & Porom, just in that they both have ponytails with short bangs.
