Live Letter Thoughts

So in this thread, we find that players aren't really interested in talking about the Live Letter. They'd rather talk about how Samurais were betrayed by the developers when Kaiten was removed and whether Team Hydaelyn or Team Zodiark is more virtuous even though neither was a topic in the Live Letter.

Did Viera and Hrothgar hairstyles/hats also get mentioned along the way but I missed it?

I'm excited for most of the new content. Interest in Island Sanctuary dropped down because it looks like we can't customize building placement so every island is going to end up looking like every other island, and I'm sad that the developers choose to limit it to level 90 characters when it's content that would be appealing to all levels. As usual, the music sounds great.

They didnt need to, it wasn't relevant. You thinking it should happen isnt something you can blame the Devs and hold them accountable for when they didnt even say they were introducing new party members in 6.1. What works to the games benefit is new content, which we got, which people played and enjoyed. A new party member wasnt a detriment to that.
Feel free to be Honest and dont make things up out of thin air then get mad at anybody but yourself.

When Yoshi-P was showing the pictures of the new casual gear, you can briefly see one of the Hrothgar's model finally having their ears clipping through the Snow hairstyle (which wasnt a thing before). So it looks like we got that whole lack of ears on new Hroth hair fixed.

Yeah but....when you have such odd takes like complaining about the "image of Final Fantasy XIV" and now complaining about Lopporits dancing (which obviously is playing into the next set of Hildibrand quests which that thing is appropriate for and ALSO A REFERENCE to the dancers in FFIV, and also this doesnt even matter in the grand scheme of things to cause players to unsubscribe to the game) then we as a community also need to discuss and look back into whatever feedback we give that's considered actually plausible and viable. You cant forever hide your nitpicks and complaints as good feedback.

for now just that hairstyle but the fact that they allow ears to show, could potentially mean they've done the same with the other hairstyles. At least I'm hoping thats the case. I dont play Hroth nor do I give a rat's ass about them but I care about people who care about that race and I think it's extremely short-sighted on the devs part for them to have gone for so long to have limited hairstyles for both Hroth and Viera (including ones you earn as rewards in game). There's no excuse and this is something I will 100% complain about till they address it.

This. The lopporits dancing is most likely part of Hildibrand where nothing is to be taken too seriously. Be like Cyr from the HW Hildibrand story and learn to throw any logical thoughts out the door. I'm a little surprised no one from the "everything must be serious and no wasteful animation" crowd didn't complain about how bendy parts of grandpa reaper's avatar was. No one should be able to bend sideways like that. Ahem. I don't think I saw any of the other "new" hairstyles besides the Snow hairstyle on the few Hrothgar they used when showing off the various gear sets or glamor. Course I'm not sure what the hairstyles they recently got currently look like on them so I wouldn't be able to go and say "Ah ha that Hrothgar has ears and is using the 2B hair" for instance.

Then we shall have to agree to disagree. I believe my feedback is both honest and relevant. Respecting fans of the antagonist faction, and yes in this case that includes Zenos, by not being dismissive about their concerns and fleshing out their stories to a sufficient degree is both plausible and viable too. Using appropriate imagery for the late teen-adult playerbase is also something they should be doing instead of cartoons that feel like they talk at the player rather than with them.

I have no interest in seeing Loporrits dance over the place where we fought Zodiark, and I am reasonably concerned that Lahabrea might have his character reduced in such a way as to push the notion that the Ancients were set on the path of auto-destruction (despite clear and readily available evidence in game providing evidence to the contrary).

Nevertheless, complaints are a valuable part of feedback and crucial for the game to see continued improvement. You might agree with some and not others. That is simply the way of things.

I always thought of Zenos as a Hildibrand character that somehow escaped containment and entered the main story somehow.

Wanna know something? You can also learn to admit when you have clear bias or strong opinions over something in the game AND understand that your opinions and ideas would probably not work for the greater good of the game.

I for one, would want some of the old school rpg elements be put back into current FFXIV such as TP or elemental attributes and cross class skills to give more flavor to combat, but guess what, I know these opinions I have are not good for the long term of the game and would be detrimental to the overall current experience where you get more frustration from the majority of the playerbase than the few who finds it appealing.

So yes, feel free to express your opinions. Its a free forum after all, but at least realize everything that you or I say should be taken as "this is how the game must be".

I remain unconvinced that picking up new characters in 6.1 would have been to the game's detriment especially when that patch's story had a lot of filler that could've been cut in order to move the action along. Using nuanced and mature storytelling would also probably be appreciated by more players especially those of us who take a deeper look at the story. I believe these things would be more appealing and less divisive overall, so I will continue to advocate for them.

If I have any bias is that I gravitate more towards what characters/settings are more fleshed out, with my frame of reference being the numerous single-player titles I've played in the past along with other media I've consumed. I will therefore hold FFXIV to a standard based off these things, especially if it wants to brand itself as a single player title in some respects. The solutions I have provided are conducive to doing that.

There is something to be said about this phenomenon we see in which players are resistant to outside suggestions that aren't explicitly sanctioned (even if later on they are). It is often discussed in relation to players who are so heavily invested in specifically WoW and its way of doing things that they reject positive and proven ideas that have worked in other game's even if it would be in their benefit.

It is possible FFXIV may have a similar scenario occurring, wherein certain players are unwilling to entertain discussions about things like new characters especially when even the fans of the scions are getting tired of them themselves, and other relevant issues pertaining to story, content, and gameplay. The fact that there are players who insist that Beastmaster could only be a limited job when even WoW's Hunter class is able to tame pets and participate in all content is something I struggle to wrap my head around. Why is there such insistence that it must fit the established paradigm in this game, rather than taking what works in another?

I believe that their frame of reference may play a part in this. If it is too limited, such as in the case of WoW players who are against some of the QoL improvements FFXIV has made over the years, then perhaps that is the reason why we are witnessing some of the reactions from people in this game here only the reverse scenario.

Nobody argued that, the Fact and Point is they just simply didnt. You dont just add in characters just because, the story was written that adding a new party member just wasn't relevant to the narrative. Disagree with it all you want, but thats just how it is, and it didn't hurt the game. 6.1 is the START of the new journey, by design its filler & exposition to set things up.
They will tell their story how they want to tell it.

I remember recruiting Leliana quite early on in Dragon Age Origins, that was fun. Her character was then subsequently fleshed out as I played the game. It has been done before, to great effect, and I see no reason why FFXIV could not have done something similar in 6.1.

I expect for characters to evolve in meaningful ways by way of growth, loss, change, or death. The scions did not provide this to a sufficient degree in Endwalker, and in some cases showed regression rather than progression. To then have these characters tell everyone else to forge ahead based off trauma that they either suffered so long ago or show no lasting impact from did not have the intended impact they thought they were going for.

The maturity of Endwalker was tainted irreparably by the extended focus on slice of life and humour. There is a time and place for such things, the expansion about an apocalypse wasn't the best place for them, certainly not to this degree. It feels that FFXIV shifted from a high fantasy game in Shadowbringers to one that struggles with its identity in Endwalker. This wasn't in the best interest of those of us who wanted to see the themes and setting of the game done justice. Hence why some of us take issues with the Loporrits dancing atop Zodiark's resting place, a coffee shop being opened in Ultima Thule, and the infamous burger scene.

I want FFXIV to be FFXIV. A high quality fantasy game with excellent storytelling. I believe this was accomplished in Heavensward and Shadowbringers. I would like to see it meet or exceed the standards of those two expansions at the bare minimum moving forward.

Yet I disagree that you and others believe that EW had issues with how they wrote the Scions in the narrative. Personally I feel like HW and ShB alone are overrated and that the only reason they held any value to it's narrative and presentation is due to the backbone of the established setting in prior expansions before it.

If we took Heavensward as a standalone game then it wouldn't have worked, and the same goes for Shadowbringers and yeah this also means Endwalker. FFXIV' story is the sum of all it's parts and me personally I still see that it's quality being consistent.

But I'm not going to continue to argue over the story of the entire game. We already have such a thread for it.

He's allowed to have the opinion that it needs to be fixed and therefore present solutions to that problem.

And this is coming from someone who doesn't share his view point. I feel like the direction the game is going story wise is just fine.

On the topic of this thread: This is going to be one packed patch and hopefully, everything goes smoothly with the patch release.

I doubt that last batch of hairstyles has been fixed. They were a rush job to add in hairstyles that already exist in game.

Of course you dont, because your sitting here comparing FFXIV to other games you obviously like more, and are written in your preferred format.
You like things your preferred way, and want FFXIV to cater to that Preference. So far, it sounds like its not going to. You should take FFXIV's storytelling as it is, not how other games do it, or how You want it.
Like Atelier said, it sounds like you want a completely different game called FFXIV.

Whoever this mystery Reaper is will be introduced the way FFXIV will introduce them, and then will go from there.

I would like to see a well-crafted story like that of Heavensward's where our main party at the time was more compelling than the one of Endwalker. That expansion is more befitting of being associated with "tales of loss, fire, and faith" with those protagonists compared to ones whose sacrifices were reversed and who, instead of losing anyone over the course of Endwalker, were gifted boons by their own parents and ultimately never faced lasting consequences as a result of their recent actions. I believe that should a more Heavensward-like approach been adopted for 6.0, both you and I would have found more satisfaction by way of reaching a compromise, which is what a significant number of players feel isn't happening at the moment.

For all the fears internally about FFXIV ever including more challenging small group content like WoW has, it is being introduced this expansion along with Deep Dungeon which provides a different experience that is challenging through different means. Adopting ideas from WoW, another video game, is poised to turn out well for them once it releases. FFXVI appears to have adopted some of the more iconic scenes from Devilman wherein Sirene rips off Akira's arm, and displayed that same scene in the recent trailer. Things that worked in one, worked in the other. There was also a curious comparison drawn between Minfilia's halting of the flood of light and an Elven queen in WoW doing something similar in a youtube video, which while having different lore still made for interesting moments in both cases.

Again, it all comes down to the frame of reference. This game has and will likely continue adopting scenes and story beats from other games, and will hopefully do them justice.

You arn't looking for a compromise, you are looking to get a specific style of writing, what YOU want. I honestly dont care how the author chooses to write, and Im not going to sit here and tell them how they should write, and bring up other works and tell them they should be like so-so. This isn't a resistance to outside suggestions, this is me saying the Authors vision should be delivered THEIR way, not somebody elses way. This isnt Dragonage, or Game of thrones, or -insert title here-. If you want that, I believe you should go enjoy those titles, instead of trying to make and turn somebody elses work into another work.
Its just like how there was a time, and sometimes still is people form WoW that like to come into FFXIV and say it needs to be like Wow. Saying FFXIV needs to have the same systems to be successful. Lo and behold, FFXIV isn't using those systems, and is still very successful without it. Meanwhile WoW has to steal from others to be successful.

I sure hope you arn't trying to apply that crap on me. Ive said that FFXIV introduces new characters every expansion. And they appear when relevant.
And I am not against mature themes or tones being put into FFXIV, but I do reject that FFXIV needs to be a certain way to succeed. I think thats a load of nonsense. Time and time again people talk doom and gloom on this game, and it always pulls through with something fantastic and exciting.
History of this game has proven they know what they are doing and they do what people like.
Sure, not everybody will be happy. But I trust their decisions on the games direction more then somebody who will spend so much energy complaining about a character eating a Hamburger, or think every instance of fun and joy is bad.

I suppose that is the difference between you and I then. I am not going to hold myself back from weighing in on their work and bringing my perspective to the table. I feel that this is a necessary element in gauging people's reception to the story. Analyse both what people liked, and what they didn't. Whether they choose to act on people's feedback is their choice to make.

I believe that FFXIV would benefit from incorporating some of WoW's systems, such as its Transmog system of glamours, as well as the customizable mounts and Dragon Riding that is coming are Dragonflight. Regardless of the source of the features, I believe these are some good ones that will help improve the FFXIV player experience.

I will continue to cite that scene as an example of one of the ways in which Endwalker missed the mark in terms of the tone in its storytelling. No one to date has provided an argument as to why scenes such as that one and Estinien's boot should have not only taken up so much of the animation budget, but were included while not depicting iconic moments such as the Sundering. Sharlayan and its characters were largely cleansed of elements that would have provided the sense of danger and intrigue once associated with them in the past, and I don't think this was to the game's benefit either.

Wanting more fantasy elements does not necessarily equal wanting them to manifest solely as an excuse to shield the major characters at almost every turn, especially when the story is written in such a way as to disallow the antagonists to score any meaningful on screen victories.

I want a compelling story and lasting consequences would achieve that as far as I'm concerned.

No, you shouldn't hold back and should bring your perspective. The issue again, is trying to turn the Authors work, into somebody elses work.
Suggesting a more mature theme, saying you'd like to see new characters...not an issue...saying something akin to: X game does things this way and I like it so FFXIV needs to be this way or it wont succeed, is an issue. Thats not constructive. Its your personal opinion, but its not really aimed at improving the game, more-so just trying to turn it into something else.
Basically, you want a different game, but you still want to call it FFXIV.

Ill also add this. Sure, WoWs Transmog system would be neat. But I was referring to things like the Borrowed Power systems, or the many things that are deemed "Time-wasters"
People want to put that crap into FFXIV, even after it being a contributing factor to why WoW isn't fun.
The Glamour log being improved. Heck we all want that. But these time wasting systems nobody wants.

I fail to see how asking for FFXIV to adopt the Heavensward approach to storytelling again constitutes wanting a different game but still calling it FFXIV.

They showed one picture with a Hrothgar using Snows Hair and having tiny little ears. So I guess they might have changed these recently added hairstyles? But could also have just been this one alone.

About Island Sancturary: I wonder how many buildings we can place, if we can later change their color and how many levels there are to grind. They did finish this part in the liveletter saying that they had not showed us everything here so I wonder what was still missing.

I was getting the impression that building appearance will change as a building is upgraded but we'll be able to select any of the appearances from the unlocked levels as the current appearance.

At one point in the past, something was said about having choices of different building designs but I don't think that was mentioned in the Live Letter (I might have missed it if the translations included such information). It could be those will be coming in a future update, like when we get our second island toward the end of the expansion.

I still cant wrap my head around the fact that we might get another island for this. Seeing how big this one already is.

I really hope that they will keep up with their "every second major patch" release plan. Who knows what we will be able to do in there in 7.0 or further down.

Since we can release minions in different places I do plan to make the village a dog + Haurchefant one. Cant wait!

You've asked for more then a Heavensward Approach.

For example, you keep bringing up other games and how they do their storytelling. Thats not asking for a Heavenward approach.
Saying how we should constantly be setting up camps after a dungeon and eating food rations and hunting for food, is not asking for a Heavensward Approach.
Talking about Friction between people, Arguments. Tension between party members as seen on other games, is not asking for a Heavenward Approach

I don't see you complaining about the silly Zenos date scene where we got captured.
