The thing is tho, we already established why surnames are NOT useless. So all in all this debate is pointless.

What about my name? State Alchemist isn't the same without State or Alchemist. Even though everyone calls me State anyway...
I dont just sound smart I AM smart.
Hey State how are things going? :) No your name fits just fine, I mean you do have alchemy lvled dont you? We are on the same server right Palamecia? I have seen you around a couple times and seen your shouts for your crafting ls.
I support the option to have it if you want it. I personally don't want one. I'm just Anathiel, but I added barron to it...didn't seem right to me. Make the first name to be unique for tells and friend adds and yeah, that's my thoughts.
I like it so another vote for no; keep surnames.
I generally try to give my characters a full name anyway, both given and surname. Because I'm a one-character-person only, generally the character is an extension of me. Having a full name lets me connect better with the character.
I vote no, of course. Not that this matter is really even being put to a vote.
Without my sur-name my name would be incomplete! D: please don't remove!
I don't mind having surnames, but I could take it or leave it. It's not a game breaker for me.
People make stupid names with or without surnames, surnames allow for greater uniqueness to ones character. They also allow you to have the name you always liked, just pick a last name/surname to go with it and your set. So many people are making these threads about tearing down this games uniqueness, which is what makes it different & fun /shrug...
Well then it's decided, won't get modified, it's more likely to be needed to identify each individual in-game, and to give "Uniqueness"; as i read somewhere, to our characters in which I agree completely.
1. People on this thread that like surnames: Kira75, Commat, Peppermint, LlenCoram, God, Flower, SevenOfnine, Aramil, Giant, Fensfield, AlphaDragoon, Akumu, Aramil, OmegaNovaios, Cairdeas, Captaindownsyndrome, Meenkieblade, Mhati, Laughlyn, Dreamer, TheVedis, SizeMatters, Synapse, Keith_Dragoon, Kimahri, Gun_Aman, Kota_Foxfrey, Molly_Millions, Lahru_Hukurou, Rowyne, Zenaku, Aigeas, Chezen, Majidah, argwings, Loony_Bob, Dargoth_Draconia, Vuitton, KaynelD, Meleena, Kurai, Aldora, KidKaze, Synthesis, TzinnFoxeye, MysteryG, Evangela, AmandaHuggenkiss, Arcell, SirEdeonX, Rannie, JillianNekonia, Kaikatzchen, Kilta_Firelotus, Vackashken, LuciBlack, Isaachar, Maat. = 58
2. People on this thread that don't like surnames and/or want them to be optional: Martin, sasukeuchiha, GreyJorildyn, spuffin, ryuuseikan, viion, Vockroth, Mega, Grendel, Melantha, Rhianu, Vicious, Galamantyl, Blitz0309, Argh, Belgianrofl = 16
I thought you could do it better. I was wrong.
PD: Last time I bump any Belgianrofl's "thread" (to be polite), I promise. Please forgive me...
Dude... you counted all posts and made a stat... you are arguing with a trol, you know, right?
Oh and by the way, you're just surveying people who have already created their characters, and are fans enough of the game to check the offical forums. Your sample is wrong. That's like surveying Susanville, and then going on to say that the majority of the state votes Republican..
There's a whole hell of a lot of people who live in California than the folks in Susanville, just like there's a whole hell of a lot of people who would have an opinion in the matter than the folks who currently play the game and post on the forums.
Are you guys really that worried about surnames of all things? x\
Macha Maudegonne:
Modeless Green Tea
No Mode Macha
*name is truly intended as a .hack//reference (Morganna Mode Gone/Maudegonne and the cat, Macha) and to an ancient Irish goddess of war.*
I like my pun-stuffed name, thanks.
I like it, it gives your character more personality, unless you just do a random "whatever" name.
I will admit I disliked having to choose a surname at first. I am usually a one-name kinda guy. But it's grown on me. The only thing I dislike about it now is the /tell system. But that can easily be fixed when they add a /sea system.
1) Looking for someone named Edgar somethingyoudontrememberwell
2) Type /sea all Edgar
3) Recognize the Edgar you're looking for
4) Click on Edgar's name and select "Tell"
There, no having to type long and ridiculous names. Just make it so you can click and tell.
That tingling sensation is probably just indigestion. I picked Dreamer for the forums because there's the possibility that an alt (if I ever create one) will become my main in the future. It was independent of my in-game character name.
And for the record, I would my prefer my character be named Chloe Ardarose rather than Dreamer OR just Chloe. :)
Tbh, I like the Sirnames. They give a uniqueness to your caracter. I dislike the idea of "optional" Sirnames. The first reason is the fact that it removes half the point of the sirnames. To stop players being called (lame examples) "bloodkiller", moving to "blooodkiller", to "BlooodkillerxX" etc
Also, The argument that people feel "forced" to pick a Sirname is a mute point. Until now, other MMO's have forced people NOT to have Sirnames, due to only having the first name as an option. For this fact, I think it is completely fair and reasonable to have one MMO which impliments Sirnames as standard
Like?

I dont mind Surnames all too much, and if it could be an option, I could support that.
One reason i love having surnames is because it spawns much more thought and creativity. Nuru Sanura is my name, it means "Kitten, Born in the Sun" in Egyptian. I've always loved the name, Nuru. When I heard about surnames for FFXIV, I immediately began searching for a last name that would go well with Nuru.
It doesn't really get in the way unless you really just face slam the keyboard for a surname.
define successfull. The lengh of time cannot determine success, this game has been out for less than a year, so of course cannot be determined via time to it's earlier counterpart for example.Quote:
Other, more successful MMOs.
I imagine you will quote playerbase/subscriptions. I would very much like to see ACTUALL figures. These figures of course, in line with the games age. I dont want to see an example of Wow as it is now in your comparison. Give me the subscriptions of Wow when it was six months old, and the subscriptions of FFXIV as it is today.
You brought up the word successfull, now please back that claim up with evidence
OK, Rift and FFXI.
Rift isn't at all successful buddy. lol perhaps more successful than FFXIV but thats not because of surnames. I think you can judge the use of surnames by how many complaints it gets from game to game.
Its more of a problem in any MMO to have the name you really want. The surnames in FFXIV were intended for this reason, and for the reason that this game is more RP-Oriented, thus granting everyone the option to choose the name they want.
Thankyou very much for sharing my opinion and saving me the trouble of posting that very argument :)Quote:

Rift.....the Wow rip-off? seeing as it HAS (and we all know it) ripped off Wow, I would hardly say any success it has made was from it's own merit. Simple pulling Wow fans to new sceneryQuote:

You're welcome Kitty. ^^
Heya!
You know what would be great? Having a One-time Activation code generator included in an ipothetical FFXIV application.
That would solve problems like "I forgot/lost/destroyed/ate the token!". What do you think?
See ya!
And how is related to surnames ? :X
also, it's more exploitable of a security token
I love surnames. Less to worry about when servers will be merged.
I like surnames. Of course when people try to make their names insulting, rude, dirty or just plain stupid it does ruin the whole point.
I think the real problem isn't the surnames being non-optional. The real problem is that no-one is properly filtering. People that get reported for inappropriate names can be around 2 weeks later. Simply because at the moment, the gamemasters are MIA.
I know why he want to remove surnames
cuz he doesn't want to be called Mr. Rofl anymore
