I blame you all for getting Triple Triad stuck in my head. And I blame the late hour for this...
* Triple Triad - it's a new, non-combative class! Equip a deck of cards and you're ready to play. Similar to how it worked in FF8 with the four numbers in the upper left hand corner (ranks) depicting the card's strength. 1 is the lowest strength while A is the highest. (A comes right after 9).
Sample card:
-------
4 6
-----
7 5
-------
* At the start of a match, you pick 5 cards from your deck to use in the match and your opponent picks 5 cards from his deck. You can't see what cards your opponent has chosen and vice versa.
* All cards have an optimal rank; using one too far above your level reduces the effectiveness of the card. (The ranks decrease depending on the level difference; lower numbers do not decrease as much as higher numbers.)
Cards are split between the following types:
- Regional cards (landmarks, cities, camps, etc.)
- Monster cards
- Harvesting Cards
- Crafting Cards
- whatever else
1) Regional cards are stronger if played in that region. You get a chance to win these cards from guards in the various regions/camps.
2) Monster cards can be either bought from a vendor (like starter packs -- your basic, most common cards), earned by killing monster (random, uncommon drop) or through various quests. Getting a monster card is only half of the fun though! Switch to a combat class and kill monsters whose card you hold to imbue their essence into that card, making it slightly stronger. Kill enough monsters and maybe something special will happen to your card! o.O
Don't forget, certain monsters intimidate others. Always try to play a stronger monster against a weaker one.
All cards have a starting level and a maximum level. A weak Coblyn card would never reach A rank (the highest strength) from killing thousands of Coblyns, but its status can be improve. (One or two of the ranks will randomly increase by one after imbued enough.) Cards are powered up by various tasks. Monster cards by killing monster, crafting cards by crafting, regional cards by completing leves in that region, etc.
Cards either have no element associated with them, a single element or multiple ones allowing for another level of interaction between the cards. Always play a stronger element against a weaker one.
Every five Triple Triad levels or so you get an ability that you can equip with a combat class that improves the rate of imbuing for certain monster types (seedkin, cloudkin, etc.) or increases the drop rate based on of a monster type. Crafters and Harvesters can trade in Guild Mark points for similar abilities.
To gain class experience you play, play, play! With other players and NPCs. Plenty of bored guards standing around with not much else to do. Maybe players too... hmmmm. Games can be played for just fun, money or ::gasp:: each other's cards.
And like any other class, every few levels gets you new skills. Oh boy! Off the top of my head:
- Well-rounded -- A temporary boost to the lowest value of the card about to be played while slightly reducing the highest rank on the card. Effect lasts one to two turns.
- Tipsy - Temporarily turn the rank of a card on its side, rotating every value to the right by one. Effect lasts one to two turns.
- Null and Void - Temporarily remove all the elements from a card.
- No More Secrets - All cards are uncovered, yours and your opponents.
Be careful when playing higher level players. They're tricky! Want to steal all your cards.
Eh... that's all I've got for now. Enjoy!
I think this is a brilliant idea worthy of a bump and should be included in FFXIV post-haste.
Something like Tripple Triad is something this game needs. The game needs time sinks that does not need the current game mechanics to work.
Something you can use so people have something to do while you work on essential systems such as the battle updates. Hell if you wanted to stall battle updates and had something like TT in the game you could just release a slew of cards we have to either quest or just find ourselves.
Be vague and say
"Added 20 new Tripple triad cards to the game obtainable through various means"
Could be gathered in any number of ways, guild task board, random Mob drops, Rare gathering items, quest rewards because god knows that we need better quest rewards than lvl 10 pants. Rare cards would make quests a must-do experience and in turn force us to spend time doing quests and absorbing the lore inserted in the quests as a side effect.
Stuff like Besitaries and Card games are what this game needs to give it lasting appeal beyond the actual meta-game and something to do outside the "Grind".
FFXI had TONS of stuff to do that had no real impact on the game.
-Panktration
-Choco raising
-Choco races
-Furniture
and so forth.
Can at least this side of the game have some sort of storyline tied to it with a beginning and an ending of some sort?
Unlike XI every aspect of XIV seems to be created as an endless treadmill. It's good to have filler between meaningful events but filler is all I see in this game.
It does not have to be triple triad. It can be similiar, with different name. So it will not be like from FFVIII taken.
I would like to collect and play card game in FFXIV, however no one with name triple triad with same rules. :))
No need. Just say it's a popular pasttime in Limsa Lominsa that has spread across the three kingdoms. Its sheer popularity prompted Ul'Dah to establish gambling halls, and the art of pugilism quickly developed in response to poor losers.
The thing is, it's something to do. If Triple Triad was in the game right now, I'd probably log in just to play it.
And maybe do some guildleves that offer cards as a reward.
Here are few ideas to add to yours : (card vendor npc) - all actions below are interaction with npc.
- card can be sold at card vendor npc for gil
- combination of cards (or more of same card) can be exchanged for crafting material (no gear! but material)
- some type of cards can be transfer into shards or crystal
- card vendor npc sells basic lvl 1-10 cards for gil
Play with npc
- you could be able to play with some npcs in around the world or in the cities
- some of them would have expensive cards, but hard to get. Skilled players.
Game win
- you can take up one card from the enemy
Game lose
- enemy takes your card
Another
- there is tournament held in any of big cities, where special rules will be implented
(example with lose you lose more than one card, etc.) players can interact here.
Interaction
- you can play with any other player, you can lose or get card
methods to get a card
- monster drop
- nm drop
- play with npc
- buy basic cards at npc card vendor
- via gathering (but this sounds weird and I dont like it personally - only if % was really low)
- leve reward
- quest reward
Tetramaster was awesome, so that, triple triad or a new card game please SE =)
I've just opened my FF8 box and the first time I've played that card game I was like "Damn, XIV has to have this!". I was thinking of the possibility to duel with other players, deciding from friendly play or wager play.
Other than this, I remember in Limsa Lominsa seeing a sign on a door like a Playhouse or something, and I thought it would be great to host a Tournament for this card game, where players have a Hall of Fame and good rewards if they win.
Awesome Idea! Worth a Bump.
So many fantastic ideas in this thread! I would absolutely love to see Triple Triad introduced into XIV; it would be a great way to bond the community together. *hums Triple Triad theme*
This game needs a card game. Just reading this thread makes me super excited about it.
Implement this SE, ASAP!
There is no argument here, if they added this, it doesn't matter how poor the actual MMo is, you would have one of the most popular minigames of all time and people would flock from all around the world to play.
SE, take note, add this, or we will picket outside your building, and bring the batty woman from that stupid church in the US!

I genuinely think implementing something like Tetra or Triad that is so classically FF would really help the game to feel genuinely fun and lighten the tone a bit.
Edit: Man, I HAVE to play FF9 again after listening to a bit of OST, SO GOOD.
No, Parley is all we need. SE hit the nail on the head.....
Didn't they....? :O
I loved the card game in FFVIII and IX. Would be fun if we got to collect cards and decks in FFXIV. Would be awesome if each mob had a chance to drop its card.
Triple Triad, yes please! :D
Side note: make Parley FAST, now is slow as... well, nothing else is that slow!
Yes!!!! Triple Triad!!!
It actually surprised me that XIV didn't have any type of weird minigame, really weird.
All together now!
Boinga boinga boinga boinga boinga boinga boinga boinga
clap clap, clap. clap clap, clap!
Is it wrong that my heart hurts when I think back to this game, I loved it so much :(
both triple triad and tetra master were fun
I guess no one posted about the triple triad stuff on JP side, they have thread going on about new ideas to make game fun so added this thread link + info on there in JP :) pretty sure JP guys will like this idea a lot also.
Actually, I did that 3 months ago.
:)

Ah I see cool :)

I think it would be best to lay low until end of September, then go all out on Triple Triad.
We all know the answer so far.
Getting the other regions involved would definitely help.
I think a whole casino with mini-games would be pretty shweet.
Got some downtime? Hit the slots xD
Chocobo mounted offence, would be too cool, so it could never happen lol j/k j/k
Card game <Yes, please>
this has been discussed many many times and i believe it is something almost every single player in the game can enjoy. the casuals get home from a hard day at work and say "i'll just go play in the casino or play cards with my friends the hardcores can say "while we're sitting at this camp let's play a few games of cards or we are bored with raptors let's go to the casino". these are nothing more than massive time sinks, but enjoyable ones and i know i would spend countless hours doing them.
More ideas to keep things interesting...
Tournaments!
Official:
Official, city-state sanctioned tournaments occur every 8 (or 6) days — so every week it starts on a new day. The tournament also rotates between Gridania, Limsa and Ul'dah.
Each tournament has one main match and various smaller matches. The matches have different rules which could vary from your old favorites from TT or even something as simple as an Ul'dah tournament requiring each player to have a Thanalan Regional card in their playing deck. Matches would have preferred rank ranges: 1-10, 11-30, 31-50.
Entry requires a modest entrance fee — IOUs not excepted — and the prizes involve a piece of the pot, cards, items or tournament points.
Unofficial:
Unofficial tournaments don't occur as often (twice a month) and their location is subject to change. Varying from a back alley in one of the cities to some out of the way place out in Eorzea. But the potential rewards make up for the inconvenience.
One of the NPCs in the Pugilist guild knows the location of the next tournament and the secret to getting in, but information is never free...
Once you finagle Tiny's Triple Triad Tournament NPC linkpearl out of him, every week it'll flash and lets you know where the tournament is being held and any other pertinent facts.
Man one of the things I want to hear dev feedback on would be this. Come on community reps!
They already responded to the thread awhile ago. The most they said is that they're considering the feedback. We probably won't be hearing much else about it 'til after the summer.
Everyone can keep liking the first page though!
I could just see it now, TT confirmed! ;)
That would be a huge announcement, however I still think it would take some time, that's why I would love to see it posted when it was only a few months away.
I say until then we keep asking for it, and keep asking for it until we get it. (Cost analysis aside)
Even if it's not TT, but a card game that we can play against NPCs or other players, and the tournament idea is excellent.
I love this idea. Bringing back Triple Triad would be great!
Vanguard had a great idea with their card game, whatever it was called. My favorite aspect of it — one that I wish FFXIV would take and run with — was the city wide buffs that everyone would be granted just from the players playing and winning at the card game against the guards.
Of course, it did seem to get a little repetitive after a while, so the devs will have to avoid that. I don't remember from FFVIII when playing TT with the same person over and over again if they kept using the same cards or if the cards were chosen randomly from a larger deck.
Since mods seem to be bringing up things we've been talking about since Beta to the dev team today (in regards to housing) I figured it was worth a shot resurrecting this old thread lol. Come on community reps, let Yoshida know we want card games!
This thread ain't old! Get to liking, people!
So an idea has occurred to me, and I'm not sure if it's been posted already, so feel free to ignore this text wall at your leisure...
I'm sure you're all familiar with how rules worked in Triple Triad: each region would have it's own sets of rules and after playing enough times in one, you would be able to transfer a few of them to another region randomly. I'm sure most of you are also familiar with FFXI's conquest system in which nations would compete for control of regions, at the end of a real life week results would be tallied, and whomever was in control of a region would get different types of benefits.
Since the original idea of rule transferring a la FFVIII Triple Triad would be pretty impractical to implement in an MMO, it might be feasible to implement a rule system that rotates out akin to the aforementioned FFXI system, and based on how many games are played under a certain region's banner, these rules may transfer to another. Or maybe there could be a weekly player tourney that could achieve this.
Of course, this is just a suggestion assuming they wanted to go that route. Personally, I think it would do good for the game balance if they picked specific playing rules(like elemental and plus) and just keep them as permanent rules. It wouldn't do to have players able to just plow their way through other players due to overpowered cards.
Establishing separate "mentor", "exhibition", and "ranked" game classes might also be a good way to foster a big community for the game.
