Yeah, this is primarily the problem. There is literally only one thing to do once you are nearing or near BIS (which thanks to soldiery and hunts, isn't hard to do). After that it's just "do this one raid". SE needs to stop this fast vertical progression crap and spread stuff out along a bigger variety of content.

But with the way it works, if there was no Lock out, how long do you think people would cap out on gear, They will just cap in in weeks to a month, depending on play times and then unsub till next patch. and then it begins again.

I would suggest like it has been said multiple content that has different variaity, so no one is shoehorned into only doing one thing for one set.

It would be best to have several contents that has weekly lock out. Tomestone cap is one of them. But we could use several semi casual - semi hardcore contents x 5 so that you have more options - horizontal progression and NOT vertical progression. It does not have to be all revolve around drops, they could do more currency + items to trade similar to how level 110 gears are handled. This way people have several options to do every week, and they can't just finish it in a month.

Is this what the forums looked like for Vanilla WoW? Or any other MMO within its first expansion?

Or maybe just...more things to do with your "capped" gear?
I remember roaming around looking for people to pk in some games. Spamming BGs in other games.
Right now all there is to do is...fish.

I know many people that have unsubbed due to lockouts before even capping gear. This argument about capping gear and the argument about selling runs are weak. People are already unsubbed due to lockouts and people already sell runs.

You know, I don't even necessarily mind content being easy. I just want more depth in progression, more solutions to various problems, and overall just more variety and engaging gameplay.
Everything's so streamlined that I don't feel very involved in what I'm doing. More variety in my goals and how to achieve them outside of a checklist keeps the game from feeling stale and mechanical, in my eyes.

Right now I'm teetering on the edge. I haven't logged in to do any serious progression in 3 weeks. I keep checking the forums, hoping for something that just reaches out and grabs me again, but so far I haven't seen much. I can't even get excited about ninja, though I enjoyed the class in XI very much. We didn't need another DPS, and we don't need this class\job "system" that adds absolutely no depth to the game. I can't buy a house, because I am on one of the highest pop legacy servers, and I can't bring myself to do any more hunts because despite the adjustments and time wearing down the newness. The hunt linkshell\community on my server is still mostly a cesspool. Gardening became too much work to make things for other people and not enough hobby that I enjoyed, and chocobo raising is a disappointment. Everything being locked to Free Companies is a disappointment.

There's a lot about the game that I like - my free company and the folks in it being the number one mark in the good column - but I can't have another decade of paying a company for a game I barely play just to have a social experience with some people online like I did toward the end of XI. That game sucked almost a full decade out of me. This one isn't going to last the year. Something really big, and really unique, and really fun needs to release soon, and it needs to not be a complete cluster F like the last several patches.

I didn't say remove the lockout. I said put in more hard content and spread gear across multiple dungeons so that even if you are locked out, you got 3-4 other places to go and get items from. Expand the itemization so that there isn't just one item that can be BIS so people have a reason to do other content. Currently SEs strategy is:

-1 Raid Content
-1 Easy Raid Content
-Brain dead easy dungeons used to grind out the "free loot" so casual/new/returning players can catch up.

Then repeat again next patch cycle. That's boring as hell and I don't see how they expect people to keep playing for 4 years (according to Yoshi on how far they planned out) if that's their master plan.

HNMs in FFXI: Fafnir popped every 21-24 hours since the last kill. Only one group ON THE ENTIRE SERVER gets to fight it. When Faf moves out of your time zone you might not see it again for a couple of weeks, let alone claim it. Nidhogg was even more fun.

Compare that with everyone being able to spam Coil until they complete it in FFXIV. Unless your linkshell in FFXI had some great bots you're doing Coil (and getting gear from it) a lot more often than you did with Faf.

I do agree that we need more options to get BiS gear from, but I don't think horizontal progression is the panacea that people claim it to be.

For one, when you add horizontal progression you'll also need to make said BiS gear take a lot more time to obtain. People complain about Atma? Hah! That's child's play compared to how long we repeated content in FFXI to get people relics. Want a Ridill/Adaberk? Join a botting linkshell or expect to wait years to get one. Defending ring? LOL.

Then there's also how you go about this horizontal progression. Is it something like FFXI where horizontal progression is intimately linked to gear swapping? Not really looking forward to that again. Should we go with "this piece of gear is BiS for Coil, this piece of gear is BiS for Ramuh Ex., this piece of gear is best for etc...". Great, my armoury chest will be even more full just to be the very best for one fight.

Welp.
- 1 Raid Content + similar Raid with more easy difficulty (but nearly same reward so all ppl's nearly on same note)
- 1 alliance raid content with CT difficulty + diffuculty for "Raiders"
- more dungeons
- more open world (BUT NOT S..t like hunt)
All this and ppl's start show up ingame

FFXIV is a type of game where every new patch i get everything. Then you do the new raid once you have that on farm status you log in once a week. Then maybe it get to the point that your raid party just does not feel like doing it anymore. Due to everyone having what they want so we end up playing something else then come back for next patch.

I been playing from 1.0 beta in 1.0 i play non-stop trying to level up to 50 or get darklight or the seals for relic quest. But in 2.0 the drop rate is 100% for gear in endgame. Someone going to leave with 1 or more items by the end of the night. At some point everyone get what they want and they just don't feel like doing it every week even for a second job at least for some people i know.

If FFXIV endgame had drop rate vs 100% drop rate for two item per raid you get little more life with the game. But at the end people end up leaving and wait for next patch.

From my understanding, 1.0 had a class/job system that was built around the potential of a class/job. However, 1.0 was forced to introduce a Job system to streamline everything due to everyone complaining.

I've played since Beta 3. It took me a month to get the necessary items for i100 once 2.3 came out and I'm still not finished with i110, and I play, on average, about four hours daily. Also, technically new content comes out every three months. Is it endgame hardcore content? Not really, but it's content.

Crafters and Gatherers have to deal with RNG all the time, especially at the endgame, and they have their own share of lockouts to deal with. Just ask any miner trying to get their hands on HQ Umbral Rocks.

I don't have enough fingers and toes to count all the real solutions you just offered.

There's a lot of people complaining about lockouts in this thread, and they are calling lockouts nonsensical, but they do make perfect sense. Raid lockouts are there to set the pacing of the game. If we could re-enter to help our friends finish SCoB Turn 4, that would push our friends through content faster, which would mean more people would have all the content done.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not defending the devs, I am pointing out the core of the problem though. The real problem is the pace and quantity of content. The lockouts exist to set the pace so that devs have enough time to make new content within the profit scheme they have. Every aspect of the game is designed to coax us to replay content hundreds of times, but speaking for myself, I get sick of content if I've done it 20 times and developers "forcing" me to do it more upsets me.

In my case, the reason is different because i got burned playing too much. SE already have my money and I did enjoy playing it for a time. Part of the blame is on me when it quickly turned into a boring grindfest ending up as work. It just wasn't entertaining or relaxing anymore when you have to put up with the cycle of non-stop grinds. Optional? yes, but still you "tend to do it," like investing for future patches. And they are both challenging and worthy to achieve early in the game. But several patches later, tons of effort spent in crafting/gear upgrades just ended in disappointment. You feel silly or even cheated wasting time after catch up patches handed oil and sands like its christmas. More patches, more things to do - it is expected from a subscription based MMORPG. But the lack of variety, uniqueness or depth from the usual "craft-defeat-collect- for me system" gets old quickly. Vertical progression will not do it for me. I will be waiting to be amused again though if some drastic changes happen.

I did noticed some patterns that slowly pushed me away from this game.

-abundance of overly similar, optional?, unnecessary timesinks like dailies for maps/beast tribes, gardening, chocobo training in stables, leveling crafting class - master /desynthesis with no future in endgame (because of RMT?). Even seasonal/special events felt like a chore than something you don't mind doing because you expect having fun bowing to every NPC's beck and call. Of course, Hildibrand is an exception.

-too much old content packaged as new content like Atma in Fates, Hunt this Fate, wait for this Fate for animus books. Old dungeons/primals/coil rebranded from NM to HM, EX or savage. Fenrir will be interesting like Hullbreaker isle was though. But i hope they quit making supra or ubersupermega versions of everything.

- enough class/jobs to play with but lacks variety in a sense that all can be maxed quickly and all bottlenecks to Gerolt & his repetetive quests for Zenith then Atma/Animus/Nexus... Yes the rogue-ninja comes but it's "newness" will fade away running the same methodical route .

-a warrior of light deserve basic needs fighting for Eorza. But you have to buy personal rooms from a free company you helped build already. Personal housing should be free, but "..nevermind the astronomical cost!" says the proud warrior. Alas! there is not enough lands to put up one in the first place. Vanity? make some through a convoluted crafting rotation if not ridiculously expensive mats just to make it glow. Gardening? join an FC first and wait for your turn to have some rare nut or just have one of your own but where?. Chocobo training? same thing. Color it electric pink? you have to go through a plethora of feed experimentation to get the right tinge. You cannot even have dialogues while riding a chocobo or queue up when its out helping you and trying to gain some xp. Item storage is inefficient and can't stack the same items or substantial enough for your needs. Lockouts are the silliest thing. "You fight for Eorza's freedom with all your might BUT you are done for this week!" Why must everything be made unnecessarily inconvenient for a defender of Eorza? The obvious malicious intent to make us eat more gametime is just too obvious sometimes. A grind minus the fun factor is just depressing.

-SE puts all effort to make new patches/expansion but never seem to bother fixing RMTs, botting, gil sellers, use of 3rd party programs like radars/teleport, etc when the infamous hunts rolled in. These things broke the game for me. Why even grind when someone else cheats? They can control the market or even the outcome of a patch like the allegedly cheap personal housing everyone wants so much. I simply lost trust or even hope to expect "fairness" in the game because of these glaring problems.

Not to the "problems" in this thread, no, because any solution offered to any of those "problems" would put a heavy burden on the developers, the players who aren't hardcore raiders, or both.

So I ask again, what real solutions has this thread offered to its problems besides complaining about how bad this game is?

I really enjoyed the game but after a year since launch, I'm not renewing my sub. Here's why:

• Weekly Coil lockouts. Fragments FCs into cliques.
• Relic weapon questline. More tedious and unoriginal with every step.
• Gear has little variety beyond increasing stats.
• Open world content so far is usually just a zerg-fest. Doesn't really require skill.
• Story expansions were hit and miss, didn't always meet the quality from the original storyline. (Hildibrand quests are actually the best storyline the game offers by now.)
• Too many gil and time sinks for trivial things like glamours, housing, etc. Stuff that actually adds some fun non-hardcore elements.

I really enjoyed it otherwise, though. I love the dungeons, tuned fights, the whole aesthetic of the game, all classes, jobs and crafting/gathering, and the many quality of life improvements from updates.

I'll be back, but I'm going to stay unsubbed for quite a while.

I started the game with my girlfriend, we did everything together. Each new challenge we beat together and it was fun. Now after having everythign done, it was time for Second Coil of Bahamut, which is not beatable without statics. We had a hard time finding a static for both her as Whitemage and me as Warrior so we can play together and we tried several times. Now she tried on her own and found a static right away and rushing through Second Coil all on her own. This really damaged our relationship, since she can't even try with me in a second static due to weekly lockout. I have to be content with ScoB being open soon, after she is practically done and i can do the content late with her. But she will keep her static and do the soon upcoming Final Coil with the static, priotizing progress over the chance to play with me.

SE, everyone at some point wants to do End-Game, but you are forcing people who want to play together to compromise and find groups of strangers instead just because you have to do the content with one group per week and don't give us the chance to try again. If you want to lock people out, then make it weekly loot-limits like in ST. I don't want to be forced waiting half a year until i can do Final Coil with friends, while i want to share the experience with friends in the first place. It's like having a friend watch a movie and watch it together with him afterwards....the friend won't be surprised about scenes anymore and it feels like a lesser experience for the one who hasn't watched it yet.

This is a multiplayer game, not a single-player game with forced online-group-ups.
If I have to to choose between doing content alone with strangers instead of the people i wanted to do it with in the first place, or doing content i finished hundreds of times already while standing around the FC housing and just chatting, I'd rather quit the game. It's an expensive chat if you won't let me have fun with friends.
Don't you see that you are dividing people with such a system?

No one is forcing you to group with strangers. You can play with your friends if you want. You only join with strangers if you want to win. After you've seen the movie once, it's not so great the second time..or the 15th time.

Then you join with the other friends..? I think this is the only game that allows you to run content more than once in a short amount of time with different people (CT/ST/all dungeons except Coil).

Aion certainly didn't have this. 3 day lockout here, 7 day there, 12 hour there. It was lockouts all over. As far as I know WoW is the same except with longer ones.

Maybe not dying as in ending it's dying for a lot of players as I have already explained there are lots of posts here with many different reasons. It's the reason why your one dimensional view of dying is not taken seriously. As per your own words many people's views and opinions don't fit your own criteria, wise advice use it.

Personally, I don't enjoy Syrcus Tower due to how easy it is, especially when compared to Labyrinth of the Ancients (I hate that the trash mobs in ST are treated the same way as dungeon mobs. Gather them together and then AoE them to death. No nifty mechanics). If you've read my posts regarding dungeons, you'd also see I'm not impressed with those either (though I am hoping the 2.4 dungeons will have relevance outside of just being a tome market dropping outdated and recycled i90 gear. i105 drops would be very nice. i113, while nice, would be pushing it).

The whole Coil thing made me cancel my subscription (and choose to pretend Coil doesn't exist until the lockout is removed. It made me a massive jerk towards my friends since they were making progress in an organised static), as well as just being burnt out by having nothing worthwhile to do in the game.

This is the problem for me aswell, pretty much done all battle related content so frontline is only one left for me atm. Also i had to start slacking with relic so i have atleast something to do besides FL, when that gold saucer thingy comes i hope it has battle arena or something similiar on top of card game/other minigames to keep me busy for a while.

Well, then another story to add in here:

1.xx players left, but those who stayed till the end formed a friendly and nice community (not as we have now)...

...The friends splitted up when the first server tranfer was made because different language (JP, US, EU servers). Most choosen the server of their region because they feared to not find groups or players in prime time. With no possible way to stay in contact ingame old friendship fade away - death sentence! That time we had hope, because dungeonfiender was already confirmed, still we did not know how it was designed...

...The next server transfer was made for those who forgotten on first transfer or those who choosen the wrong server. The main issue here was that SE said on that time it will be the final server transfer and announcet it will be able for a limited time period and you need an active game account. This was splitting the new formed community again! Some players changed server in hope to find frindlier players or just because no one is playing in their prime time. There were a lot reasons...

...Finally SE allows now all the time server transferst, but it is already too late, many players have lost interest in playing and when they come back they are feeling left behind - you have to unlock everything with quest progression and you need to do a lot stuff before you can catch up and actually play with your friends again! Group will do Shiva, oh sorry - one needs Moggry, other needs Levi, the next is stuck on Titan or Ramuh...

Actually those are not current problems, its just history and past...
I thought it may helps to understand the situation a bit better...
We already have topics on lodestone where players are asking about serverwide friendlists, communication and blacklists...

What makes me very sad is to see good FCs falling apart, but thats another story...

I don't know about other MMOs, but casual content is too easy at this point and i don't have a lot of friends i seriously want to do stuff with but those I have, had to decide if they want fast progress or try harder with friends. In my case people joined other statics, while feeling bad about the fact they can't just say "Hey, i feel like doing ScoB with other people as well". It's one group, none more. Sure, you can wait for the lockout to vanish, but that takes up to 6 months. If SE wanted to make Endgame more accessible, they would decide for loot-lockouts instead of player/party-lockouts. It doesn't feel like an MMO, if you are only allowed to challenge hard content with a set amount of people. Some people like me don't want to get used to new people every time they want to check out new content, when they started the game with friends for example. This thing is really an issue for me.

A game dying for you, which means the game lost its appeal, doesn't mean it's dying as a whole which is a statement you've made.

I'm cancelling my account within 30 days of subscribing because I ran out of quests to level. I know there are quests out there, but I work full time and I don't want the couple of hours I have each night to play spent on searching for things to do and running halfway across the world to get to them. I also didn't realize what the leve allowance meant and now it means I will have to wait a few days for my chocobo, something I'm just not willing to do, when I can just as easily go over to SWTOR or even... shiver... WoW and be able to find something to do constantly without downtime or lengthy travel times. Poorly designed game in many respects.

I know that some people don't agree, but I think it's the theme of the content. It's not as compelling or interesting as the coils. In ARR we were exploring the ancient coils, learning the events after 1.0 ended, meeting Darnus and Lousi, confronting the bound dragons in each turn until finally facing Bahamut with that epic climactic ending. Even the weapons were dropped from the final boss in each turn, and themed to that turn, not given pieces to give some vendor (Which doesn't offer that gratification we got after beating the last boss and seeing the chest with that awesome weapon.)

Now we're fighting Goblins? We went from fighting the infamous elder primal to fighting gobbies.. it just feels underwhelming. I did the normal mode, and lost interest in it almost immediately -- I understand enjoying the challenge of Savage, but for me a large part of the appeal of endgame is the theme it's centered around. Even in World of Warcraft, I enjoyed the endgame because of the story that gave it it's weight. If Alex was like side-content like the Crystal tower, that would have been cooler, but I don't think it should have been the endgame. I would much prefer to be fighting Nidhogg right now, than Goblins, but hey, that's just my personal 2 cents.

Umm I don't see how you could run out. I leveled 1-60 without running out. /shrug
