If I could macro getting dressed in the morning...well now that'd be something!

The whole concept of changing your clothing mid-battle is ridiculous though. Even in other games it's completely out of the question.
If I'm fighting a Rathalos in Monster Hunter I can't just say "Hold on, I need to switch to my status effect + gear to use these throwing knives, then back to my element attack + gear to start fighting you with my sword again!" I plan ahead and use what I think is best for that fight. You can't do everything, go with what you think is most effective.
Even still as far as MMOs as a whole go you don't see other games allowing you to switch gear mid-battle outside of FFXI. Most suffer from the "1 optimal set" problem but that has nothing to do with switching mid-battle.
Allowing people to switch mid-battle and operate all roles in a single battle goes back to the argument that all classes feel the same and even within the same class the roles are barely diversified. If you have to plan out your gear beforehand with no mid-battle swaps then at least you may have different people playing different roles. Isn't that what everyone wanted? More class/role diversification and not allowing everyone to do everything?
If you belive this cichy you never played FFXI.
about 10% of the game required a Hardcore group. That was the World HNMS. To an extent Sea and Sky when they where heavily camped nms.
WoE (8 zones), Assualt (100 of them), Salvage (4 zones with 3 paths each), Dynamis (9 zones), Einherjar (10 zones), Limbus (12 zones), Znms (3 paths with 3 tiers in each ending with a main boss), The many mini games(choco racing, pet fights, ballista, brener), Campaign (defense battles and quest related around 100), Besighed (1 thing here), Bcnms(around 60), KSnms(around 30), Isnms(About 20), Enms (around 30), Vnms(Around 20, tiered as well), Missions(around 100) all of these where without the competition and all of these except city and northland dynamis where casual in time requirement.
I am sorry but atm there is no MMO out there that has the variety that XI had, too many people focus on the smallest part of XIs endgame which was crazy hardcore.
WoW has one of the worst endgames out there, it is just the fact so few people realize it because that is what they where first exposed to and every mmo after WoW has copied it.
WoW's endgame is a few raids, a few dungeons, and PvP.
while I'm against FFXI-like gear swapping during fight, would be nice for long fights to be able to change 1 (one) piece of equipment every x minutes (like 3 or 5). Just to add a lil versatility without the FFXI-like chaos
of course this would exclude equipping a weapon of a different class (aka, switching class)
you can, you just suffer a uncomfortable debuff for awhile. essentially they just didnt want it to be on the level of ffxi 1 second macro gear swaps. you can change your strategies, actions and gear in a fight, but you will have to put away your weapon, and suffer some debuff time.
I know it, but I dont like the debuff so I would prefer the system I proposed :P
Give us a 5 min "recast" before being able to change a piece of equipment again, maybe forcing us to going in passive mode first too*; but no debuff please! That's just a silly punishment imho
*and, btw, that wouldnt be so nice either, especially for claim issues, etc
Lol at people that says no-gear-swap = the end of the world.
You can still make gears situational and not makes gears obselete after 3 months, in a game where 4man parties is to be expected alot in the future, you would need alot of gears set to be versatile to adapt to alot of situation. Also, what is the point of having content lasts for more than a year? No one in their right mind would fafnir for 3 years if it didn't drop the best equips, it is a horrible design of a content, no one should fight that horribly easy lizard that people call a challenge in ffxi for more than 1 year.
You're comparing content that's there "just 'cause" and are offshoots of the mission storylines (hence why they could afford to be so timesinky about it) with endgame content tied to a storyline, and more often than not the focal point of the story.
Let us please not open that can of worms.
Which one? You mean the can of worms that is, "WoW is just Diablo II with more players and a subscription fee"? Or the "By not supporting past content and areas outside the latest expansion, WoW is as much an MMORPG as Sonic the Hedgehog" can? Or the can of "The definition of an MMORPG is an online persistent world shared by many players who advance their characters through RPG mechanics, but because WoW sacrifices the majority of its world to obsolescence through a constant churn of expansions and level caps it has severely bastardized the genre it was born from" worms?
Just trying to make sure I don't open the wrong can here.
As much as I truly enjoyed swapping in different gear for weapon skills in XI, I think we should move on from it.
Though outside of party play I would macros for swapping gear and abilities to be saved/remembered somehow, instant and not one piece/ability at a time, its just very cumbersome right now.

Please don't turn this into FFX-2.14

What is this? Barbie Fantasy?
No thank you to per action and per skill gear swaps.
Yes please to more gear options, with their own strengths and weaknesses, to swap around on a per situation basis.
Gear swap actually made a lot of crafted gear useful and kept crafters in business before it degraded into a consumables only market in FFXI -- people worry about crafting classes in xiv getting the shaft but heavily against anything that promotes making them central.
Crafters have many other things to stay on board.. we can happily live without this unreal gear swapping..
"Oh please mr. great dragon.. can you wait for me to change my pants so I can use this weapon skill to its maximum power on you.. pretty pleeeeease..? ^_^"
"Crap I'm taking hits..! Time to wear my heavy armor with vitality bonus..!"
<.<'
gear swapping made xi great? I think not. So glad they are not going to go down that route again.
I like gear swap on FFXI, it's like you never ending finding the best set for every situation (yeah, call me elitist or just someone that is interested to my job's potency), it's a good timesink also, farming thoses gear, a lot of research to find the best set to cure, or to deal some magic damage, or to ... blablabla.
For FFXIV, i really don't care about gear swap, i'm starting to facepalm to the auto-attack as ranger with only 1 hands to punch, but that's all.
I find gear swaps absolutely appalling and hope it is one aspect of FF11 that stays in FF11.
You people are nuts.. I can't go ten minutes without hearing someone whine about their inventory being full..
I know what it feels like to want something, and to find out a permanent decision was made against it. But to the people who feel frustrated by the news, please consider the majority that doesn't like it. Aside from everything else mentioned, gear sets in XI killed inventory. The fact that we can change weapons and class instantly in XIV, means we'll need to likely carry a couple different sets anyway for jobs as it is..
Instead we can focus on our abilities, and focus on our skill rather than the macro menu up -- blinking like a christmas light show with every action ability or spell.
For the love of God this. Stop bringing back XI's worst ideas, OP. I for one and beyond happy that gear swapping isn't a battle mechanic in XIV and pray it stays that way forever.
You know, because having a million gear swap macros for every single ability was just ever so fun/realistic. I like min/maxing to a degree but XI just took the concept way too far.
You all talk about realism and How swaping gear and such makes it feel unrealistic . Now answer me this "Is walking up a hill that is clearly realistically someone wouldn't just walk up REALISTIC?
Is killing a Imp Realistic
Is Elementals Realistic
But wait you going to say part of the Fantasy ok so ill keep it to other things .
So how about I'm walking around and there is a rock in the way that in Real life i would be able to just walk over now if you are comparing Realistic to Real Life events and such you completely have no argument.
Now I see many Players say that Gear Swaps are not received well , Now i either way as Dev said no wont be an addition of GS . So This is what i see happening gear that you get from each expansion is going to be negated by new armor Now wait you going to say Matria this and that ,So we get Matria and everything but SE hasnt released how easy/hard metria is going to that to get master lvl because god knows casuals cant handle difficulty . So many players are going to be saying why wait x amount of time when i can get a nice piece of armor with HNM or nm now your going to say well its crafted w/e , Some gear is going to drop on its own and if SE is smart they will Make HNM gear far better then anything that matria can offer just saying matria is going to come close but not that close . Its like saying you buy an i7 HP laptop and install mac os x on it and call it a apple computer .

Hello Everyone,
Gear Swap? I have brought this topic to my subligar and they have told me that they are not looking into this.
[THE END]
I would like to take a second to point out that FFXI wasn't designed with Gear Swaps in mind.. Players created that system with the tools SE gave them. You have macros in this game and you CAN gear swap right now if you wanted to.
Its just a little slow atm...
And it clogs up your inventory.
This should sum up gear swapping nicely:
