I must say I find it funny that FFXIV fans actually stick their noses in the air and go "LotrO is not good, GW2 is not good, EQ2 is not good" etc.

It just seems needlessly complex. I read through this thread and the old one and I cannot find a valid reason for SE to spend resources on this claptrap.
A simple fix could be like what they do in GW2, whenever you take damage you revert back to your combat gear. There could be a simple setting that allows you to toggle between equipment but when you're out fighting it autoequips your combat gear. I mean, is it really that big of a concern if you're not dressed like a BLM in town? Also that's what the examine feature is for, view somebody and it tells you right there what class/level they are. I can get them not wanting said gear to be used in fighting perhaps, but even then it's still easy not to fit the same role. Want to look like a mage but you're really a tank? Wear clothing.
Someone walks in wearing a jerkin, culottes, smithy gloves, and thighboots. On their back in an axe. Well obviously that's a Botanist! ZOMG that Botanist just attacked something with an axe! HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE?! Oh wait, he's a Warrior. Point being, it's generally pretty easy to bypass the whole "look" issue SE is trying to push on us. Simply wear equipment that is usable by a multitude of jobs or classes and you can confuse somebody. Now, I can definitely understand the issue about AF gear, a Warrior shouldn't be toting around an axe wearing White Mage garb. But in other circumstances, if you disallow AF gear from being part of the "vanity" equipment then it negates the whole issue. The only surefire way to determine what class somebody is playing is by examining them, or looking at their equipped weapon providing it's not hidden of course.
Wanting to control your appearance so that your character is not an eyesore to you and others around you is not a valid reason? Individualized looks on the field instead of being part of an army of characters that looks exactly the same is not a valid reason? Roundabouts to imminent fugly gear is not a valid reason? There's plenty in terms of justification for gving players control over their characters' appearance. It gives people something else to strive for, helps keep content relevant and adds a dimension of enjoyment to playing.
-The assertation that everyone looks the same is false. Sure there are similarities but isn't that more of a playerbase problem? There are a lot of options that you can choose for your gear and the materia system allows you to customize gear to your needs. Sure materia has its own problems but fixing/streamlining materia would be a far better, less loony fix. I would much prefer to see quests that would allow us to open new materia slots in gear we like the look of so that it would be beneficial in battle.
-If the gear is an eyesore do not use it maybe? Maybe strive to get the crafts you need to turn a hat you like the look of into an epic epeen machine?
-"Roundabouts to imminent fugly gear is not a valid reason?" I do not understand what you mean here.
-Enjoyment? maybe. I don't really see that i guess. Wacky? definitely.
lol "So everyone knows what class you are and won't get confused " or "I want to see what people are wearing" such pathetic cop outs. Hat and body are the most distinguishable pieces on your character model. Someone could be wearing anything or nothing(wink) aside from that. If that's the excuse we are going with, then I wish they would implement a way we could "check" someone to see what they are wearing.
