When they posted that big poll about whether or not we wanted to see drastic changes to the game 76% of the populous voted yes to the drastic changes in the game so think of this as a drastic change it was voted for by the majority so just deal with it ....

This isn't the only game with NPCs overpricing. This is, however, the first game I've played where they steal your hard earned gil for no real reason.

If you have 100 pennies and I come along and offer you 10 dimes for them are you going to yell at me for trying to rip you off?

THAT IS WHAT IS HAPPENING! Just instead of going from pennies to dimes we are going from gil that is worth 1 gil, to gil that is worth 10 gil.

*shakes head* uhmmmm whatever dude they're scaling it down for everyone and not all your "hard earned" gil. Basically your gil right now is pretty worthless you understand that right? It's worth probably about the same as the japanese yen or even the mexican peso but if you want to be blind and rage over them trying to fix and stabilize the economy because they're taking one digit away from EVERYONE'S gil then that's kinda stupid seeing how this is a game and isn't even real. Think of ARR gil as a new currency. Call it "Yoshi gil" in your head if it helps. Think of your current gil as "Tanaka gil". FFXIV:ARR doesn't accept Tanaka gil. Think of it as a foreign country. To spend your money there you need to have your Tanaka gil converted to the local currency, Yoshi gil. The conversion rate is 10 Tanaka gil to 1 Yoshi gil.
