VIERA AND HROTHGAR COMPLAINT MEGATHREAD

It took them this long to get femHroth out. They could have reworked how the hroths work at the same time. Instead, they repeat the mistakes with femhroths. I just can't really understand why when it would've been just easier to fix the whole thing at once.

If they are ever going to fix the hat situation, they are just expanding their backlog

That IS the question isn't it. I do have to wonder at this point if it's a "it goes against our design idea" or heck, something as silly as Yoshi or someone not liking to see ears poking out of hats or something equally mundane. The fact that they won't even really acknowledge it is telling though, and makes me think it's a reason most players would laugh at. It's definitely not a technological limitation.

They don't want to just admit it's never going to happen, which I honestly think would be preferable to leading the fans on every few years with vague "please be patient" comments.

I could support the argument either way if you include Female Hroth. I was totally fine with having two genderlocked races (although imo Hroth should still have just been called Ronso for as much as they changed conceptually).

I guess I don't care that much that they exist now, but given boybuns' posture, the long delay for lionmoms, and the continued lack of hat reform, I definitely think there there is a case of "was this all worth it?" where both races are not played much. As far as my personal preferences go, I absolutely would trade both for working hats.

Bold of you to assume they would have given us hats without bunboys and lionmoms, they had plenty of time to do so. At least I am fairly sure they didn't start working on these two character options right after Shadowbringers release and were busy with them full time. Every new armor they developed for the game was a chance to do better as well and they didn't do that either. Instead we got an impressive number of gearsets with circlets this expansion.
No need to call more options for people to play a mistake or failure or worthless because you would have preferred dev time to go elsewhere. Chances are slim this dev time would have been used for hats, going by history.

Personally I stick with both.gif and I won't stop demanding headgear until my Viera can wear this Yafaemi Hat of Healing (and many others). We deserve to be as fabulous like the other Warriors of Light!

I really wish they would just hide the ears for all large hats and let ears clip through for all thurbans and caps. I would be happy with that tbh.

I'm 100% convinced neither were supposed to get their other gender, heck, they weren't even supposed to get hairstyles if not for the overwhelmingly negative feedback and pr disaster it caused. SE, for whatever reason we may never find out about, tried to severely cut corners with these 2 races, and it backfired gloriously.

Point is, if being a Karen is the only way to be heard, then so be it. At the very least store and AF hats should always work.

It's not even about finding 1 solution; they could solve the hat issue by making it an in-game client-side option where we can toggle to let ears clip, hide, or show no hats for viera/hrothgar. Unfortunately it seems square enix prefers "everyone gets the decision we made for you" when it comes to their mmos. You know, a live service game with different communities, cultures, and preferences.

If it was client-side then your character appearance couldn't get relayed accurately to other players.

Nah, the game already knows which hair-piece you're wearing or glammed. It's only a matter of square enix enabling the hat toggle for those races locally on your pc. It's really as simple as a visual toggle, this is how that dude that ported over ALL hats/helmets did it; or at least that's how he first started off; he's now creating ear holes and doing other tricks. But initially as far as just letting ears clip right through hats, that's just a toggle. The hats already exist as part of the equipment slot, it's just hidden by the devs.

I also would like more Viera racial hairs, because many of the ported hairs don't look great compared to their racial only hairs.
I'd like to see Mjrn's hair and Fran's hair (large ponytail with headgear) Not a half one or half of the other

It would be nice as well if the hair design team would alter some hairstyles that are clearly not meant for Viera or Miqo'te, to fit more properly to them. Like Alma's hair (Lexen Tails) which has two huge gaps where normal, human/elven or Au Ra horns would go- it looks really bad on Viera and Miqo'te- it would be nice if the space meant for human ears was covered for miqo & viera. A suggestion would be adding additional hair to cover it or smoothing it down.

I'd just like to see some more masculine hairstyles for male viera, and ones that don't have a hairline that's either too high or low (this doesn't seem to be as much of an issue with other races).

That, again, is my point from earlier.

If they had a choice whether to "double down" or to make all hairstyles compatible with all the faces, why pick the former?

The fact that they never unlocked those specific hairstyles on the males and now have the same number of face-locked styles on females, while being open to giving them every other hairstyle universally, suggests to me that something is weird with how the characters were designed.

And I doubt it's about "giving everyone equal amounts of options" because in that case some of the other races are owed some additional race-specific styles.

This is one reason why I have absolutely zero faith that they will ever work on hats for Viera and Hrothgar.

They had a problem with the face/hair lock when they introduced Hrothgar 5 years ago, and not one minute of Dev time was spent fixing that problem, so they just do it again with Hrothgals.

Same thing with hats. YoshiP can say "please be patient" till he's blue in the face, but are we really to believe that they're really going to work on hats when they haven't worked on any hats the last 5 years?

They really should just pay the person who has gotten it to work, and implement that into the game proper.

I'm still wondering what the reason is myself. Not long after the benchmark dropped, I wondered if anyone had made a mod to fix that problem. Because I was curious if they had to change the shape of the hair or the ears or something.
However, the images they showed off I couldn't see any changes to the hairstyle itself. It was the same size, same shape but on deferent faces. The hrothgars had the Wayfarer's Necklace so the models are probably the same as the ones currently in the game.

Also, a bit of a side tangent. I found out today Hrothgar don't get the same cutscene as Miqo'te in the monster hunter crossover. When Miqo'te say to the Palico "A talking cat!?" The Palico tells them "Have you looked in a mirror!"
But Hrothgar just get the same generic version as everyone else. The one about "have you seen the turtles and fish around here?" Despite Hrothgar being even more feline than Miqo'te!
All this time I just assumed Hrothgar and Miqo'te had the same version cause cat people, but nope. I shouldn't have assumed they would have even got that kind of attention to detail.

I wonder if it's safe to at least assume that female Hrothgar will skip the part where they remove the ears? (I know they at least won't repeat that mistake. Just making a joke to vent.)

Now back on topic. I don't use mods and I normally wouldn't bring them up, but that Hair mod I brought up shouldn't have been made. Male Hrothgar should have long been fixed by now. Heck when they got updated in EW when the redundant faces got removed and players could select between some of their racial hairstyles. That was the moment all of them should have been made available no matter what face option was picked. But instead, they only unlocked some of them.
At least progress is being made. It's slow but it is progress. Maybe it won't take as long as FF11 has been in service to completely catch Hrothgar and Viera up with the other races in hairstyles and hats.
(That game came out about 22 years ago and servers are still going. Way to go Vana'dial!)

Well, that turned into a rant. So, to end on a positive note... I've got nothing. Umm. Oh! Thanks to seeing some tweets I know the Scorpion Harness will look good on my Hrothgar come Dawntrail.

I assume the programming is something along the lines of "if character is Miqo'te, say X; else say Y" and that just wasn't reviewed when Hrothgar was added to the group covered by "else".

If you brought it up in the Localisation forum, they might fix it.

There's also a sidequest somewhere where you get a "lion medal" and the image on it is described along the lines of "a legendary beast somewhat resembling a Miqo'te" – since then, they've added lions as real creatures and a better race to compare them to, and yet it persists because nobody is going to re-check every statement that was written in every obscure ARR key item description.

Huh, I recall people pointing the MH one a while ago and to my understanding it was already edited to include Hroths for the 'talking cat' dialogue option. I'll do the quest after maintenance to confirm.

Oh? If that is the case, I wonder what caused the person I came across on twitter to get the Turtle and Fish response? The posts are from May 4th and the screenshots date on the bottom right was 2010-2024 Square Enix Co.

Literally every Viera-related dialogue in the Ivalice ar doesn't acknowledge if you play a Viera at all, much less a male one, and going further back to Au Ra, Yugiri doesn't acknowledge that you've been running around as an Au Ra during 2.x MSQ when she expresses reluctance to unmask either (though that may be related to the lines being voiced, I don't have perfect memory of which cutscenes are voiced in ARR). I generally just don't expect old lines to be updated based on new additions due to this.

It was quite shocking in Endwalker to meet the Loporrites and no one in your party make a comment if you're playing Viera.

Expected Thancred to just turn and say "Friends of yours?"

There's a viera joke when you eat/choose one of the carrots during a loporrit quest. Think you gotta choose the blue carrot and they tell you a viera joke since you're viera.

Player race has rarely been acknowledged in quests, beyond people sometimes calling you by your race instead of by name. For example, go do the early archer job quests. One of the characters complains about how everyone who's not a wildwood elezen is polluting the art, including the player, even if you're also a wildwood elezen. So acting like that's a new thing for viera and hrothgar is silly.

I have extremeky low expectations but the pictomancer artifact hat better work for hrotgars and viera...

This was the case for reaper but then only 7 or so of the AF headgear were compatible with viera in endwalker.

I do wish as they added the new races, they updated earlier zones to include NPCs of those races. We just kind of act like, oh- they've always been there. It would be cool to replace some of the NPCs in major cities like Limsa, Gridania and Uldah with viera and hrothgar.

They consistently make new races foreign to Eorzea so I doubt they'll ever do that. Hell, Au Ra only have two NPCs in the expansion areas they were introduced in for lore reasons (Sidurgu and the woman from the HW WHM quests), and while they never repeated that it just underscores how much I doubt they'll ever do it.

Well, the media tour is here and it doesn't look good for Viera being able to wear AF gear headgear again.
I don't know what it is with SE and designing gear expansion after expansion that 2 races cannot use. You'd think after 2 expansions of people requesting it, they would get the feedback.

Not trying to hunt down every interview across every content creator (hoping someone else who already has will make a summary at some point, or at least a list of what questions got asked by who)

but not seeing anything regarding any update regarding Viera or Hrothgar hats. So we're still at the point where the most information we've gotten in the past... what, 3 years? is that one answer from an impromptu Q&A where Yoshi-P said they're "working on adjusting the system" for it.

Viper and new reaper hood will work like EW reaper hood and just clip. Scholar hat kind of sits off to the side (seems to be a stylistic choice on all races). Circlet hats will work as usual.

Actual hats will not work.


Have not found any images of Hrothguys, but I'm guessing they're screwed too.

Hrothgals hats is also a mystery still. I've been looking and found nothing. They don't have the ear problems of Viera or the posture problems of Hrothguys. But that doesn't mean hats will work, devs could still just be lazy and just not do them at all (which is what I expect).

They've been "working on it" for like 6 years at this point and keep making gear that viera can't use. You'd think if they're working on it they wouldn't make such a heavy backlog for when they eventually decide to allow it.
Judging from their attitude recently it seems they are stalling and trying to placate viera players instead of giving any answer yes or no and risk getting a negative reaction from the community.

Like they aren't getting a negative reaction now?

I understand that there's an actual coding limitation at play (something about how ear fuzz interacts with the hair removal on some hats by default iirc), but it's also something that they need to have at least started to work around by now. It's been two full expansions with no signs of even getting full access to job hats in sight.

Nah, after I finish 7.0 I'm out to play GW2's expansion that comes out in august.

My goodness, it is just 1 set given to us every expansion to sell it to us!!!! And they can't even give us that? They can't work on it for a few more moments?
Especially with some gear not looking complete without the hat, like Astro, Red Mage and Bard!

I was already disappointed with the Astro changes, this just makes me not want to touch it. I mean what's the point?

Havent seen a single thing indicating that 7.0 will bring hats to the forgotten races. And funnily enough, there are so many tiaras and eyepatches in the AF gear that there has obviously been some thought of "workaround" in the question. But I said it a long time ago that if they didnt make hats available to viera by 7.0 I would switch off viera.... and after watching several videos today where gear was shown to not work on vieras, AND the entire lipfiasco that hit viera face four really hard, I have decided to jump to my miqo alt. Granted, she will lose her ears in certain hats, but at least the headgear will be visible.
