Gender locked race?

If there's one thing I can say about this game with certainty, it's that it isn't difficult to make feminine looking men. What some people are asking for is the ability to create men that either very child-like or are nearly indistinguishable from women. I'm not sure why Viera have to fit either aesthetic, especially when it isn't at all in alignment with how they're described or the sort of lifestyle they live.

In many fantasy games elves are beautiful and stunning not only in physical looks but in prowess on the battlefield. This is how I imagine the viera. Gorgeous and wise and also dangerous. Beautiful men is very common in Japanese anime and ffxiv. Omega m is stunning but he will kill you. He is also very androgynous but leans toward male.

Well, either male viera or hrothgar would to appeal to the gays, but I would say the hrothgar even more so if they're a male only race. :v Look at what happened with the galka in FF 11. They're still making doujins about them doing all sorts of things, if you know what I mean.

I want male viera just because I think the lore/culture of the race is cool. Doesn't have to do with gayness, though I can see to an extent why it is associated with that. It seems like straight guys play girl characters more than anything now, which leaves the girls and the gays as the majority who actually care what the males of a race look like.

This isn’t about being a hive mind it’s about the game having options for all people. Currently pretty lean yet adult looking male is missing from the line up of characters... more so than anything else.

Other than beast dudes with tons of fur which doesn’t seem to fit the aesthetics for playable races

This line in particular stood out to me. He prefaces with "Until recently-" meaning that the lines after that statement is history/background lore and may not actually apply to current/future events. I think you're skipping over the whole "a Viera living outside her homeland was unheard of." There is little reason to specify female viera if it applies to both of them.

I assume by 'lean' you mean slim and lightly muscled?

It isn't an aesthetic that's missing, though. Hyur and Miqo'te can be designed to fit that look very well. Especially in regards to Hyur, given that they have a muscle tone slider and can be tweaked to be very short.

Oh, you are right. I did miss that. My brain replaced "her" with "their" by default. This muddies some of my hopes from the "lore" given to us as it is even more vague than I originally thought.

Hyur makes come pretty close and I played one for a while. But being hyurr is frankly boring and again the faces are just not it. I play miqote now because I’ve settled with cute.

But none of these give you beautiful male model style vibes.

This is what I see.

Midlander- average to very handsome young male with a average body type
Highlander -hot muscle dudes who will keep your butt
Roe- big burly bear men.
Aura- beastly dragon men
Miqo- mostly cute but also possible to be very masculine looking .
Eleven- tall nerdy to rude looking men with very sharp jaws

There simply isn’t a race that is designed to be beautiful modelesque creatures for any races.

Now the viera come and the women have beautiful runway model looks.
I want men to have that high fashion male model look. And that simply isn’t available in game

While the choices given appear to fit the "aesthetic" for you, they do not for some of us. It's a matter of differentiating opinions on it and what each of us deem to be "lean" or "pretty" enough. Each race seems to have a particular look that no matter how hard you try, is hard to deviate from. This is because of the limited face and body options for each race. TBH the devs just need to give us more customization options outside of hair, like for the body and face, but we aren't really seeing/getting that. So our hopes are put into a new race that fits the look that each of us want. While I have no issues with and even encourage a diversity of character types, I'm going to put most of my support into something that I'd rather play as, especially if that preference has, in my opinion, little representation in game.

Agree. We have concept arts and actual lore in-game on male viera. They definitely have vision about it.
While the concept arts might be early, they did show it again recently on Paris fanfest.

I'm wondering if the JP version also specify the feminine pronouns. It happened before when the gender neutral term in JP got translated into gendered pronoun in EN.

I took this with a grain of salt. In FF12 and tactics, you still saw Viera that were outside of their woods, they were all female. You didn't see a male. Before this time, this 'several generations' you didn't even see the females. They only started to leave the forest due to changes with life outside of the forest and the fact their way of life wasn't fulfilling enough for them. The change was very recent on the scale of time for the Viera people - especially considering how long they live.

So, the text reads in line with past events with the females. The difference here is that Viera who did leave their tribes were branded 'outcast' - this no longer seems to be the case. This is a big difference between these games or rather this is what the text is implying - or so I read it.

Considering the huge rule regarding the 'Green Word' that is if you left the Wood you were no longer considered 'Viera' and were an outsider - this 'rule' or their 'dogma' has been relaxed. If the dogma on this has been relaxed then it's likely that it isn't just relaxed by the females alone and there may be further adjustments, of course, we haven't seen that yet - the Dramaturge certainly hasn't seen it other than hearsay.

Anyway; if the dogma has been softened so Viera who do leave can come back etc and not be cast out then such teaching must be brought down by the high elders and leaders of the villages; the matriarchs. While the males live outside of the community; they follow the Matriarch and the Wood. Seeing as the Matriarch and the Wood are two of the same in regards to wants and desires due to how they communicate - then yeah...

The only thing I can imagine stopping the males from leaving is they want to protect the villages and are instinctually more 'feral' than the females to the point they don't mix well in society once they hit puberty. It's certainly not like male Miqote or Mithra where the males stayed at home simply because the numbers were so low they needed to be protected. Viera lifestyle actively has the males fight among themselves and cull their own numbers - they don't have to do that, it's just how the 'males' are. It does make me wonder if the lads are sadly just 'like that' and have a nasty predisposition as soon as puberty hits.

Imagine that; elegant, beautiful males that fall into the 'ice king/queen' trope.

From the lore we've been given so far, I can't think of any reason we would encounter male Viera in the woods. They're isolated and they either actively avoid other people, or shoot them on sight. They know the woods better than we do, and would slip away unseen.

The only way we'd see male Viera is if they have abandoned that lifestyle entirely.

Have you had a thorough play-around with Elezen settings in the character creator? Or are you just going from the other characters we see in the game? They do tend to be a bit odd-looking - I think particularly since they've had to come up with so many unique combinations for NPCs, so not always using features that go together nicely. And the default characters in the creator don't do much to 'sell' either clan as good-looking.

I have an Elezen alt, and it's definitely a bit hit-and-miss whether he looks nice in cutscenes - lighting angles can do awful things to their features - but overall I think I got him within that "beautiful male" aesthetic. ( 1 2 3 4 )

For what it's worth, he's a Duskwight - despite their 'typical' grey colouring you can also give them normal human skintones, and (someone pointed out to me a while ago) they don't have the permanent dark edge around their eyes that Wildwood characters have. (For comparison, this screenshot I had on hand of a Wildwood character with the same basic face setting - a mockup of that hooded guy from the end of 4.3 that people kept trying to compare to existing characters.)



Also, to nitpick re. spelling - despite the connection to "elves", it's "Elezen" not Eleven.

If that's what they're going for I might as well be playing ESO - looks like a buff Cathay-Raht. Which to me is so just, why? ESO is releasing an expansion on this race's homeland very soon which is going to overlap with ShadowBringers. If people wanted to enjoy a big cat race then obviously the better of the two is going to be the one with the huge lore and isn't gender locked. While I'm sure folks will love the idea of playing a literal Khajiit in FF14, I'm just ???

If anything, I expect them to look like Byakko. He could easily be described as having a 'majestic mane' so perhaps Hrothgar will be heavily inspired by his design.

I've not seen the JP version of that conversation, but I'm 95% sure it doesn't use feminine pronouns just because Japanese wouldn't use pronouns at all in this context. And I'm almost sure it wouldn't be singular - when talking about the tendencies of a race, I think context would demand the neutral plural "they" (彼ら)... but that's an unnecessarily roundabout way of saying "Viera".
Still, even assuming the sentence was the same (and that's not guaranteed either, playing with JP VO and EN subtitles I notice a lot of lines being worded very differently, in different order and with different terminology) it would most likely say something to the effect of "Until recently, Viera were not seen outside (implied Viera's) homeland" or "Until recently, (implied Viera) were not seen outside Viera's homeland". Pronouns do exist in Japanese, but context often makes them redundant. You're very unlikely to see a sentence that explicitly addresses the same thing twice unless it's for emphasis or clarification.

Many people have requested more options for male characters over the years. It's a broad spectrum ranging from classically handsome to ruggedly handsome, lean to outright bulky. It just so happens that whenever there's a push for such things, it gets silenced by a very vocal portion of the community.

I’m gonna assume the worst and think that none of the Hrothgar faces will have giant beards as a facial hair option.

I wasn't trying to say that we were. Just that these two races seem to fall neatly into two genres that are popular with gay men. Not that all gay men are interested in just those two things, everyone is different. But for the association to be there in the first place, there has to be a good amount of interest coming from somewhere in the community. I mean, earlier on we were both talking about wanting muscly bunnies. That's pretty much what bara is. But I get what you're saying, you don't want people assuming stuff about you just because you're gay. I don't like that either. We all don't like lady gaga and quote drag race all day. :v I'm sorry if I was being too general.

I mean personally, I would be happy if Hrothgar were a race that looked like Byakko's human form. I'd just be peeved at the situation. I can't imagine everyone who wants male viera will just forget about them because Hrothgar look cool. Not to mention you'll be hearing from people who want female Hrothgar eventually too. It's looking to be an exact repeat of the situation with miqote and roegadyn in 1.0. We even had people back then claiming it wasn't a big deal and that the devs didn't care/had bigger things to worry about.

That's because (male) Roe are ugly as sin. We don't all want to cosplay Wreckit Ralph.
Highlanders are dull and have a poor selection of faces.
Au Ra are probably the closest to a decent, interesting masculine fantasy race, but the horns are divisive.

This. There's always people asking for more male and masculine options. Mainly in the context of glamour, but also for races too based on what I've just said.

It's clear that most of the demand for Viera is for female Viera, and while there's certainly significant demand for male Viera too, I can see why they'd be torn on what to implement, based on the different demands, and the lore, which they seem to be trying to protect for once.

Whatever they do, just know, that there is room in the code for two new races with both genders.
So even if they genderlock Viera and Hrothgar now, it's possible to undo that in 6.0 or onwards, and it's simply a matter of time and resources.

There's just one chance to leave an impression though.
If they are smart, and can jump out of their comfort zones, they can make a big reveal this upcoming fanfest and gain a lot of positive feedback. Feedback in form of subscribers, more expansion sales and especially fantasia's.

I'm sure there are some people that would prefer a lion race, I'm not saying there aren't. What I'm saying is that people have expectations after being shown female Viera. Being able to meet those expectations would be the smart thing to do, that's pretty undeniable. I get that you want to downplay this and make it seem like it isn't a big deal, but it is a big deal to a lot of people. People like to assume that just because they aren't personally invested in something it doesn't matter.

I really don't get why people wanting male Viera bothers you so much Cica. What do you gain from constantly trying to tell them something they care about isn't important?

I don't see the issue with Baha's comment. It would be a smart thing to do because there are a lot of people who want male viera, which would sell fantasia. Baha isn't saying that any other race wouldn't sell fantasia, but that male viera would sell a lot of it. You obviously don't think it would though, since you don't think male viera are that important to people. That's what I mean by downplaying. There's nothing wrong with you voicing your opinions, I just don't get why you're so adamant about male viera being unimportant.

No I wasnt talking about male Viera only, but about 2 new full race, which in return would increase the fantasia sale by a lot. And thats why I was talking about their comfort zone, if they can jump out of it and give both Viera and Hrothgar, it will boost up fantasia sales even further. I dont know why you both feel attacked now though.

If they decided wisely on this, it will increase overall reputation of FFXIV. I doubt they can shine with a "genderlocked new races" while the community asks for female Hrothgar/male Viera?!

That's just where we disagree then. I don't think it is unreasonable for people to expect something like that at all. No more unreasonable than it was for people to expect male miqote or female roegadyn back when 1.0 launched. After being shown a new race expecting both genders to be playable shouldn't be an unreasonable expectation at this point. None of the races since ARR's launch have been genderlocked. Why are people unreasonable for not wanting that to change?

It's perfectly reasonable to want something. It's not reasonable to expect something that wasn't promised. Especially after all the info to the contrary coming out in leaks and mistakes. I'm not giving anyone a hard time on their desires, I'm posting about what they're saying otherwise. Aka that somehow implying male Viera would sell more fantasia than other options. How do you know that? You don't. My point was that no one knows what's more important to the playerbase and somehow that is construed as I'm a male Viera hater. After being shown a new race expecting both genders to be playable shouldn't be an unreasonable expectation at this point. None of the races since ARR's launch have been genderlocked. Why are people unreasonable for not wanting that to change?

Again, I'm not saying anyone is unreasonable for that reason. I'm responding to justifications people are giving in their posts. People can want genderlocks to stay gone, in an ideal setting I would want both for both races too. I just don't think it's likely considering what we have seen over time, and I've been here awhile. So while I WANT both, I don't EXPECT both.

No I wasnt talking about male Viera only, but about 2 new full race, which in return would increase the fantasia sale by a lot. And thats why I was talking about their comfort zone, if they can jump out of it and give both Viera and Hrothgar, it will boost up fantasia sales even further. If they decided wisely on this, it will increase overall reputation of FFXIV. I doubt they can shine with a "genderlocked new races" while the community asks for female Hrothgar/male Viera?!

You've been decidedly vocal about male Viera in this thread, so I assumed you were being vocal about it again. I honestly don't even consider two fulls races an option considering the past.
