Had a WHM in Copied Factory run straight into the proximity AoE between phases in the Engels fight. Everyone ran to the back like normal and they ran straight to the center and died. It's easy to think they were trolling, but they were also performing really poorly the whole way, including one point where our tank was at less than 10% HP and they and their co-healer weren't casting anything. It's not that they were too busy DPSing, they were doing actually nothing. I don't know how people get that far in the game and then somehow don't know how to play. With each expansion and increase in level cap, it makes less and less sense.

Fellow AST. If we're both in the same party, and I've already chosen a sect since you haven't chosen yours, please don't choose the same sect after 5mins into the dungeon. Thanks!

Happened to me thrice today. I did adjust; it just gets annoying eventually XD.

To be even more specific, the only shields that don't stack with each other are Galvanize and Nocturnal Field. All other types of shields, including those from other AST/SCH abilities like Catalyze, Seraphic Veil, Nocturnal Balance and Nocturnal Intersection do stack.

Also, the AST shields are stronger than SCH shields. Which one takes priority just depends on how much HP protection is left over in the currently active shield. E.g. if a SCH shield has 5000 hp of protection left then a 6000 hp AST shield will overwrite it. If the SCH shield had 7000 hp or protection left, however, then the 6000 hp AST shield would not.
Adloquium: 375 potency
Aspected Benefic: 500 potency
Succor: 225 potency
Aspected Helios: 250 potency.

I knew about the shields overwriting each other but I thought the Aspected skills did too, mostly because AST was basically expected to switch Sects based on who the other healer was (in HW) and I didn't question it. I just did what was expected. Glad to know regen/aspected stacking was always A Thing. :)

Well, apparently likening mob aggro to getting all of the candy to new tanks does work, but at the cost of everyone else questioning your sanity.

As for a story...I was farming some Sigmascape 4 to finish off my WAR title achievement, and got the same GNB twice in a row. Load in, notice other tank doesn't have tank stance on, so I throw mine on. Gate drops, I pull, do a few attacks....and why is Kefka no longer facing me? Oh...he decided to throw on Royal Guard and provoke...fine lets drop Defiance and just DPS to my hearts content as he gets 6 vuln stacks twice in the fight...both times he was the other tank for me.

Is WAR no longer considered a tank? Practically every single duty I end up in, if I am MT as WAR someone decides to provoke the boss off of me, when I'm not even getting a single vuln debuff, or even remotely close to dying. It baffles my mind how someone can be tanking things PERFECTLY, and yet someone else decides they want to do it, and 9/10 they end up eating half the mechanics that can be avoided.

Sadly, "tank wars" are nothing new. They've been happening since this game's conception. It has nothing to do with WAR specifically. I don't really know what causes it, other than maybe people needing to feel more secure in their role. If they aren't actually tanking maybe they feel less important? I don't know. It perplexes me. Personally, I will wait to see what the other tank does upon zoning in. If they don't turn on their respective stance then I will do so and pull the boss. Usually this isn't an issue, but random people will always be random. What annoys me is the tanks who turn it on and then stand there indefnitely. It's like "Look sir/madam/etc, you turned on your stance, are you gonna pull or not?"

I just find it happens more when I'm on WAR than any of the others. And all my tanks are the same ilvl too(483), so it's not a matter of gear.

coincidence. i noticed if i start the pulltimer/ ready check it lowers the chance of it occuring but that could also be just me. (for some reason initiating the checks makes the other tank figure you're taking it. i only do it in eden normal because some people might want to be safe to start their early prep for their own habits.) but if the other tank starts with stance i just let em have it. 6 out of 10 times you'll be mting in a few minutes anyways.

When this happens I just let the other 2 have at it. I won't contribute to their "contest". If anything goes wrong, it's on them. If they die, then I will do their jobs for them and probably better. Either way, I win the "war" without ever taking part. lol

It's likely due to how WAR's DPS phase works in bursts. Just remember that whoever vokes first actually loses, so long as they're not holding their burst. Likely he saw you were done with your burst phase, so he took it, and started his own burst combos knowing that even if you provoked it, he would wind up ahead.

Whenever anyone has a tank fight with me, usually in alliance roulette, I just save my burst for when they voke, and then run ahead of them in agro for the whole fight.

As for the origins of this, Idk, it goes back to 2.0, 24 mans where they original had 2 tanks in each party. Only one is needed to tank the boss... so a lot of dick waving ensued. Of course, back then it was easy to flex on most people, because a lot of people didn't use STR accessories.

Yestarday, I had a bloody three-fer.

1. Duty Roulette. Got the Elidibus fight from the end of 2.X. If that wasn't bad enough, the samurai in the party kept blowing our LB3 before the segment with the meteors. We wiped the first time and barely managed to clear the DPS check the second time.

2. Leveling roulette. The tank was VERY new. I'm not one to be harsh on new players, because we all start from somewhere, and I was encouraging during the duty...but what tank not only forgets to turn on their stance during a dungeon, but turns their stance off during?

3. MSQ roulette. I got Castrum. I can't crack funny in Castrum like I can in Praetorium.

After that, I decided "That's enough FF14 for one day."

I wish the tanks I encountered actually wanted to tank. All my stories about tanks in this thread lately have been about ones that never want to tank anything at all, even when they actually have to, and their laziness can cause a wipe.

This has been the far more common experience for me as well. hheh

My experience leveling a tank was getting into a Trial and going hey, I’ve never tanked this before, is there anything I should do or know? And then no one saying anything and the other tank doing it, so I just blue DPSed my way thru em all. The closest I’ve come to tanking in a 2+ tank instance was keeping an eye on one of Bismark’s sanuwas.

That's the thing, though. When I am playing a healer or DPS, none of the tanks want to be the one to tank. They all just stand around looking at the boss. When I'm playing a tank, I just keep running forward and pull everything, then the other tanks try to provoke it off me and it is frustrating as all hell.

Yup. That's a mood. I've tanked adds as SAM, but then as soon as I go in as DRK the other tank(s) want my add despite having one of their own to deal with.

Just let them have it. . . at least you will get into some raids where both are of them at two busy stealing from other and not caring about adds - I had that yesterday.

Even better if it's WoD because you just know both of them might die to Angra, giving you a chance to MT - I notice they don't want that dude back when they die to him.

Whenever another tank decides to provoke off me, I say screw it, drop tank stance, and let them go at it. I don't have the time to bother with an aggro war. If the other tank dies/gets taken by a mechanic into a void, THEN I will take over again, but other than that I will only turn stance on for adds that I need to deal with.

I remember back in the day when it was 2 for LoTA, and 1 for ST and WoD(I started in March/April 2015). I only played DRG with the odd bit of BRD back then. But I don't really remember there being too much in the way of aggro wars like there is now. Even farming the capped Poetics via the CT raids, or even in the Extreme primals when I was farming the ponies, I don't recall it happening even 1/100 as often as it does now.

Though, now that I am done with WAR 500 run achievement, I need to relearn how to GNB and work on that one. So we will see if it was just because I spent so much time on tanks, particularly WAR since I needed almost all 500 runs(same with GNB), or if it was just something based on the lull in content as well.

So, uh... this one experience has been a while already, but I found it so bizarre that I thought it'd be a waste not to share.

So anyway. I was leveling my PLD to 80 in Mt. Gulg, had a SCH as healer. They were struggling with bigger pulls from the beginning, also because both of the DPS just kept standing in goo, so I was taking it slowly. During the first boss, one DPS went down, the other was close to dead too, and the healer was having a hard time keeping everyone alive (including themself), so I used Clemency a couple times on them and myself to give them a breather and prevent a wipe. Then the healer goes "what are you doing, stop healing". We killed the boss somehow, and suddenly the SCH starts attacking me for "stealing their job" or some such.

I was genuinely baffled and confused because I could not fathom how people could attack another player for making full use of their skillset and trying to help, so I said "Well, it looked like you were struggling. I didn't mean to undermine your authority as healer. Sorry to offend." And they went like "ok, have it your way". Which meant... that they stopped healing me altogether. Like, through the entire dungeon.

I was really close to leaving and just eating the penalty, but then again, I didn't want to punish the DPS for the healer's fragile little ego (that, and because I can be a stubborn mule), so I continued with smaller pulls and some help from Eos (I think), clemencying my way through the dungeon, while the healer just used Broil, if they weren't just standing around twiddling their thumbs.

It was... an interesting experience. At the end of the run, I apologized to the DPS for the slow and bumpy ride and thanked them, then told the healer that they were a real piece of work and had some growing up to do before leaving. Also blacklisted them, because I don't need people with nasty attitudes and fragile egos souring my otherwise great experience with the game.

I'm gonna be honest, I get really triggered on SCH if I use excogitation and see someone using clemency RIGHT before it can pop over and over again. And also if I see them use it above 80% HP, or whenever they use it while I'm still alive and not OOM.

It's a waste of a GCD almost every single time, even for me sometimes if I'm already in the process of casting a heal, and it feels even worse when it's a cooldown I'm wasting.

Of course I'd never get triggered enough to call out a paladin on it or refuse to heal him, but it's still pretty obnoxious. The only HP that matters is your last one.

See, I usually try to be considerate of that sort of thing when I see it since I'm a healer main myself and know this kind of frustration pretty well (not playing SCH much though, to be honest, because I just don't like the feel of the class since ShB, but still).

However, when playing a tank, when I see that a healer is clearly strugging - partly because they aren't using their oGCDs, or not enough (because that one wasn't, I suspect they wouldn't have had such a hard time keeping everyone alive otherwise) - and it really, really smells like a wipe, then my self-preservation instinct kicks in. Of course, there are different playstyles and attitues which lead to different experiences. There are healers who are fine letting the tank's HP dip below 20%, there are healers who fret over every major HP dip like a mother hen. Likewise, there are tanks who can deal better with one or the other.

It really depends on the type of content for me as well. When I tank in Ex trials or Savage content with my Static, I know exactly that I can rely on my healer buddies to do their job, so I don't panic as easily, and even then, it can happen that they're too busy with a mechanic, their own or someone else's HP or whatever to heal my sorry ass right now and I need to be ready for that juicy tank buster that's coming in. People make mistakes, even people who are really good at the game, and they can be overchallenged at times.

The thing is, running dungeons with random people in DF I have no way of communicating with them on whether they're really as overwhelmed as they look like. The same situation can be interpreteted by different people in different ways. Sure, maybe the SCH thought they had everything under control, and maybe they did, but it sure didn't look like that to me. I'd rather use my skillset to the best of my ability and ensure I actually do survive (maybe wasting a healer's GCD/oGCD in the process, sorry for the frustration if I do) than take my chances and risk a wipe because the healer didn't have things as much under control as they thought.

Bottom line is: I trust people I know and can communicate with better. Pugs in DF... not so much. No offense to all the great people I've played in DF with over the years, though.

I can respect that, I guess I just wish all tanks kinda understood things from a healers perspective like that, so maybe they would realize I'm not struggling, I just want my excog to pop on a trash pull before I go spending more resources ;w;

Sorry for your trouble with that healer though, no matter how frustrating clemency can be, it's no reason to just not do your job lol

I'm not one to normally initiate a vote kick, but I think I would have felt 100% OK about it in that situation. :X When things are under control, a tank curing themselves does make me scratch my head a bit, but if people are dying and a pull looks like it's going to end with half the party on the floor, nothing wrong with helping out a bit.

If they had simply left it at the snark, while totally uncalled for, I think I would have been OK to continue. Game egos can be a mysterious thing. But then for them to turn spiteful and stop healing you all together? Yeahh, that's not great.

The problem is that a good healer and a bad healer tend to look the same in certain context. If you're sitting at 10% for several seconds just waiting for that heal it may be because the healer is awesome, or it may be because he's complete garbage. There's no way to know until you're dead.

There have been plenty of instance on my Paladin where the Healer was playing chicken with my health a bit too much where I said screw it, and just started healing myself. I'm sure in some of those cases it was completely unnecessary, and in others it likely prevented a wipe. It's just a weird position to be in.

Chances are, if the person couldn't keep up and the tank died due to lack of heals, they would have blamed the party for taking too much damage. The self-important types seem to see themselves as immaculate, regardless of evidence to the contrary.

Yeah. I had something similar happen last night in Sirensong. Was doing some pretty large pulls up until after the 2nd boss, where I knew that particular room could be painful, and I knew that the healer was new. Did a big pull at the end though (2 dogs and the ghost thing). I was sitting around 15% and sort of expected a heal to come my way in time. Just as I was about to hit Superbolide though I dropped like a rock. Thankfully the healer was quick to get me back on my feet at least, and even though the 2 dps had died immediately after, we were able to hold our own as the 2 dps ran back. I don't really know who was exactly at fault in that instance, probably a combination of the both of us not being in sync. Things happen. I took it in stride, as did the healer and dps.

Coming back from two months away, thought I'd jump into alliance roulette. It's always Crystal Tower, should let me ease back into the game, right?

Nope! Copied Factory.

Went nice and smooth, surprisingly.

Well, maybe raid roulette. I get early Alexander nine times out of ten....

Nope! Eden Titan with two first-timer tanks. That one was messy.

The fun part there is that if you'd died without using clemency, it'd be your fault. You had a tool you could've used to not die and didn't use it.

Healer egos can be touchy. And I'm speaking as someone who's main'd a healer in several games and at all levels of content. In the end though, the important measure of success is: did we win?

As for this SCH's behavior, as soon as I realized they didn't intend to heal THE TANK? Vote kick for sure.

Speaking of Eden Titan, I was doing that one yesterday to get the materials for a Deepshadow weapon, and...

I was healing with my partner, and somehow every single DPS died at least 4-5 times. We didn't wipe, but there was always at least one DPS dead because they refused to learn the mechanics after dying the first time. There was a few points when it was just us and the tanks, despite our best efforts to keep the DPS alive (turns out you can't heal through one-shots, who knew). I mentioned as it ended that I'd never seen so many DPS die in that fight, and one of the tanks quickly spat out a line about a healer complaining about doing their job before quickly running out of the duty before I even had time to read what they said. I wasn't even complaining, I was just stating an observation. And it wasn't even about them! Talk about sensitive.

Just got out of a roulette on an alt where I was on MCH. I got thrown into Sirensong Sea. Rest of party comp was WAR, WHM, and BLM.

WAR was clearly new, so I gave him a heads up about mechanics, even though he mass pulled. WHM was on top of their game for keeping the newbie tank alive, though they could've pushed more Holies, which is fine.

This BLM...

-Was 79, but still a sprout, I'm currently unsure if they were a booster.
-Was not using AoEs save for Thunder 2.
-Dropped their Ley Lines in the worst spots.
-Would almost rely on Fire 4, Blizzard 4, and Transpose throughout the entire dungeon, though that barely did anything for them. I maybe saw the occasional hardcast of Fire 3.
-I heard Enochian recasted a grand total of 19 times the entire dungeon.

I had to LB the big pull after the second boss since I realized the BLM was pretty much not going to contribute to aoe'ing at all. At least they did their job quests, so there's that. Last boss took longer than expected since a quarter of the fight the BLM was just not...really doing much other than letting their stacks run out.

I got two comms out of it though, and I don't know from who.

Sounds like someone didn't read his job skills. BLM in particular seems to have an issue where some people don't realize you shouldn't just work up the number order for doing damage. There have been many many stories about similar things, and I'm not sure if it's just a lack of understanding or a lack of caring.

remember seeing a couple of BLMs (one at 50+, another at 60+ god forbid) whose rotation consisted of hardcasting Fire III and then Blizz III whenever they ran out of MP...big yikes

While not exactly a story, more like an admission, a few months ago was me coming from like a year and a half long hiatus or something like that. Decided to throw my lv70 BLM in to leveling roulette and didn't read up on what changed between the middle of Stormblood to 5.2. Was in Doma Castle, and I apologize to the party that I got grouped with, since I was using the outdated AoE rotation of Fire 2 and Thunder 4s. Didn't know Freeze had gotten a buff the way it had.

Let's be honest, Freeze is probably on the list of the single best buffed skill in the game, since it was mostly a joke skill until recently. Anyone who knew the old one but didn't check for changes would be in the same situation you are, and I do hope the people you were with let you know about the changes.

Other than the monk, at the end of the dungeon, saying that it might help to check a guide and work a better rotation, when the dungeon ended. I did, however, inform my party at the start of the dungeon that I had just started the game back between expansions so my BLM knowledge wasn't up to date, lol. The group was patient, no wipes, just a little slower than what it could've been.

I had spaced on that some pages back when talking about aoe rotations on blm. and I've played since the better part of the end of SB expansion before shb and got blm to 80 constantly forgetting that so it can very easily happen.

Now if we could just remove blizzard 2 from the game as its entirely worthless...better yet why not just make blizzard 2 the new Freeze and save us the trouble of looking at the worthless skill blizzard 2 is?

Got E6N today in roulette. We wiped three times and the final attempt took around 15 or something minutes. During the third wipe run, I get KO'd due to no one taking on of the tethers off of me and I start to notice how some players are playing.

There was a DRG using their AoE rotation... and not even the full AoE rotation (never used Coerthan Torment). I looked at the battle log in-game and saw what they were doing: True Thrust, Disembowel, Doom Spike, Sonic Thrust, Doom Spike, Sonic Thrust, etc. I called them out asking why they were using their AoE rotation, but no response (to add insult to injury, DNC Closed Positioned them and never changed). I'm not sure what the OT was doing, but I'm pretty sure I saw some Fast Blade spams happening.

I should have just left after seeing that... but I had raid and I didn't want to have a penalty during raid again.

It's going to get "worst" for a month or so. Always happens with new expansion or major content releases.
