Reading that name, the first thing that came to mind was the crystal ball Matoya uses. From what I recall, it's said to be a crystal of light from an earlier era. It's also said to be much more powerful than the one our WoL carries.
I came here to suggest the same, that Matoya might mean Sharlayan. I hadn't thought of her crystal ball though, good call.
Concept art of the new dungeon, for those interested (they didn't have any screenshots of it ready for the letter):

This opens the door for a number of locations on where we could end up going. The Chief of the Vanu showing up though in the MSQ for 5.4 is giving me a feeling wherever we're going, it's going to be linked to a certain something floating in the sky.
I'd say what we got in the Live Letter hints at Sharlayan involvement moving forward, but without context it's impossible to say how (assuming the dungeon is even part of the MSQ; it probably is but the possibility it's not is still there).
Matoya's Relict, if anything we know of, probably does refer to her ancient Crystal of Light - also known as her Crystal Eye, a reference to I Matoya's Crystal Eye.
Stay... tuned...
Alternative suggestion: the reason Chief Sonu Vanu is in Ishgard in that MSQ screenshot is because the Vanu Vanu have noticed something weird going on at Azys Lla, and investigating it eventually leads us to Meracydia.
I'm expecting that the Garleans have set their eyes on Azys Lla again for one reason or another and from prior experience the Vanu chieftain decided it was probably a good idea to tell Ishgard about it.
That's...a kind of big stretch in logic when we have zero context whatsoever.
We've already gone gallivanting through locales of Sharlayan make previously for one reason or another.
I'd reckon this dungeon is where Matoya keeps forbidden knowledge locked away and as per usual circumstances dictate that we need something from there to address whatever new problem is rearing its head.
There is still one mopey dragon back up there, if we're being pointed towards Azys Lla. Maybe it's time she got a little WoL Grief-counseling
Maybe if we tell her about how the ones responsible for all her sorrow were 12,000+ year old humans struggling vainly to bring their own world back from the ashes, she'll... I don't know. Maybe accept that the whole "humans can't understand us, their lives are fleeting" thing is just an excuse they tell themselves.
I'm not convinced Azys Lla is going to have anything to do with it. The Vanu know of the location - vaguely - but they've never been shown to visit or watch over it. They had the key, but other than that and Allag implicitly creating them like the Ixal there's no known connection between the two.
Or some closure at the least. She needs to come to terms, accept things, and whatnot. If we do go to Meracydia, I could picture her getting some major screen time before the finale of Hydaelyn/Zodiark story, perhaps with her siblings there or at least her father Midgardsormr (seriously Middy, why haven't you been helping your children cope!?).
At the moment I'd say it is as much a stretch to tie Sharlayan as the expansion due to the new dungeon, as it is to tie Meracydia due to the Vanu Vanu chieftain being present at Ishgard airship docks.
Vanu Vanu have never been that interested with anything that would be going on at Ays la, heck the key was just sitting on an island for centuries with them fully knowing it was there so they don't care about it at all. Most likely the Vanu Vanu(is it Vundu or Gundu I forget sorry) chieftain is there with Arymeric and Lucia due to an invasive force, could be Bismark has been resummoned, could be Garleans have flown across the sky, could be Flandaniel approached them, heck could be a return trip to show the chieftain Ishgard as thanks for helping with random things(doubtful but it is equally likely at this point though) too little information with a single screenshot.
I may be on ship Sharlayan split expansion but even I'm not ready to go all aboard due to so little information so best to temper yourselves before disappointing yourself later basically wait until part 2 :p where we get the more juicy trailer and screenies.
Thinking on it, Zodiark may be the focus of the 6.x raid series. It does feel like the most obvious choice following Eden, and would bookend Bahamut nicely. I know there's been expectations of going to the moon, but it wouldn't make a very engaging field zone given it is as desolate as the Empty on the First. Having the moon be a visited during a raid story on the other hand....
This is a good point. I think in my mind, it was cutscene traveling to the moon and then a trial there, but this could also very well be case. I'd imagine the last zone of 6.0 as an area to reveal vehicle that will take us to the moon, as that gives more possibilities for lore and world building.
There's no way Zodiark will be a raid instead of MSQ.
Why not? Having a Raid be the end of the MSQ of an expansion that ends the story makes sense and would follow on the footsteps of CT being required. and its not like it has to be 3 tiers of 12 fights, it could eialsybe just 1 tier of 4 fights and then the optional raid will come later.
Withthat said I must ask if Eden was required to progress to 5.3 MSQ like CT, given a certain quest not making much sense if it was taken post 5.3 MSQ
I know there is a lot of speculation that it will be Meracydia but for me there just does not seem to be any pressing issue there for it to be the location of the season 1 story line. It may have a rich history but at the moment there really is not much there, i do imagine we will go there someday, perhaps as a time travel X-pack but i do not se that being the case right after ShB.
If it is the season 1 finale then it has to be either Sharlyan or Islabard, with Garlemald included of course, and in fact i feel it Needs to include Both for the finale other wise there will be some loose ends, since Sharlyan is small i imagine it will be our main Hub city similar to Kugane of it being only a hub city and maybe one zone and the rest will be Islabard, not all of it but obviously Garlemald and 4 or 5 other zones. I do not imagine it will be as spilt as SB though i imagine Sharlayn will serve similar prominence as Ishgard did in HW and then the zone exploration and endgame city will be in Islabard. maybe the final zone will be the moon, I felt it would be for years but now i am not so sure, it might just be a dungeon trial and raid series.
In my mind we need both Sharlyan and Garlemald for this to be the finale, that way we can move on to new story arch's, antagonists, and territories in 7.0 and maybe there can be a larger time gap between 6.0 and 7.0 for them to fix up some spaghetti code issues in the game and work on other goodies since it will feel as though most current arch's are wrapped up
According to the Heavensward allied beast tribe quests, the Vanu know where it is, but they consider it cursed ground and going there is a huge taboo. Probably because of all of the murderous alchemical monsters.
Where was it said that Allag created the Vanu? I don't recall that coming up, and they don't particularly resemble any Allagan creations.Quote:
They had the key, but other than that and Allag implicitly creating them like the Ixal there's no known connection between the two.
Key word "implicitly." Their protection and veneration of the key to Azys Lla suggests the Allagans charged them with the task, the truth of which has since been lost to history. Given the Allagans' creation of other slave races (Ixal / Iksalion, not to mention myriad other creatures) it's a plausible conclusion. (Again, implicitly, not explicitly.)
Allagan stuff was found where the Au ra (Azim Steppe) homelands are too but that doesn’t mean they were fabrications like the Ixal were. The fact that Ixal are Allagan-made is explicitly stated in the game. But I don’t even think there’s anything that implies that Vanu are the same.
If 6.0 is going to tie up loose ends with Hydaelyn, and I think it's gotta be a Sharlayan focused expansion.
There's hints that they, or someone there, knows something, or there is some ancient Sharlayan knowledge that could pertain to her.
I'm not too sure Sharlayan alone is enough for an entire expansion, so I'm expecting a split again kinda like SB's Al Ahmigo/Othard split, and where it is split with I have no idea. Could be Islabard, could be Meracydia, could be the New World.
But I'm thinking now that they'll save the meat of Meracydia for a future expansion.
Coming back to Matoya in 5.4 could be paving the way to going to Sharlayan, or it could be a red herring, seeing as I wouldn't expect anything concrete until 5.5, but you never know, it could be a longer build up. Scions started disappearing at 4.4 didn't they?
Yes, Thancred was gone as soon as Y'shtola tampered with allagan relics in Azim steppe.
What could be the reason to go back to Matoya's? Last time we went there was so that Krile could trace scions souls. At this point it does not seem that we would need something from her since everyone is back safely. Unless there's a problem with G'raha after all...
Matoya now says:
Matoya: So, Shtola's back. Has been for a good while now. Yet the girl hasn't bothered to pay me a visit. Hmph.
Matoya: Well, perhaps she has her reasons. Wouldn't be the first time she hid from me after doing something embarrassing. In any case, it makes no odds to me. I prefer my peace and quiet.
Based on our last two meetings with Hydaelyn and knowing that Matoya's crystal ball is an ancient crystal of light, my gut says we might be trying to contact Hydaelyn—perhaps to have a chat with her over what we've learned, or for some other purpose. Or maybe Hydaelyn's recovered enough to contact us, but no more than that, prompting that chain of events. But it could just as easily be a problem with G'raha's soul, or needing some long-sealed knowledge or device to deal with a problem elsewhere. Or perhaps we're poking around in her basement without her knowledge because she's away from home, having been recalled to Sharlayan out of necessity or by force. Y'know, to see if we can figure out why before we go chasing after her or something.
The order of the Callings is, in order:
Thancred: Called during an Alliance meeting in Ala Mhigo after sharing his plan of using subterfuge to sow dissent within Garlemald using a rumor about Zenos being possessed. (Funnily enough, this is wholly true.)
Urianger / Y'shtola: Called at the end of 5.4, in the Rising Stones while Urianger tries to share his theories about what's going on.
Alphinaud: Called when we're talking with Hien about Seiryu's Wall, I believe; delivered by Gaius when we go to test the thing out.
Alisae: Called after the battle in the Ghimlyt Dark.
PC: Called proper after clashing with Zenos-Elidibus, but doesn't travel to the First before picking up a beacon in the Syrcus Trench that lets G'raha get a proper lock on them at the outset of 6.0.
Without context, it's difficult if not impossible to say exactly what's going on with "Matoya's Relic[t]" or what Sonu Vanu is doing in Ishgard. All that can really be said is that Matoya being present suggests Sharlayan involvement (possibly; she is an exile like the former Circle of Knowing, after all). Matoya's presence vaguely pushes things toward Sharlayan, but... we'll see.
Based on what Matoya says above, I'm assuming that's the 5.4 easter egg. Y'shtola speaking with Matoya about she learned on The First, specifically what she found in the Anemnesis Anyder (because we left her there between 5.2 and 5.3), her subsequent kidnapping from Elidibus didn't give her a chance to explain what she found, followed by the creepy sound made when saying goodbye to Runar, all imply that she has learned something that hasn't been shared with the group. Waiting until she can get Matoya and the Scions in the same room to reveal what she knows is probably the next step.
And now that we know Matoya is associated with the new dungeon lends credence to this.
Let me be clear, I don't think Y'shtola has a hidden agenda, but clearly knows more than she is letting on, and probably needs to talk to Matoya or get something from Matoya to be 100% sure about the secret she is going to reveal.
I don't know it's been posted before but (UNCONFIRMED, of course), the new Expansion could be named Forspoken. Does seem to follow the naming trend of one cognate word titles. However, I'm drawing a blank as to what it could mean outside of a grander Hydaelin/Zodiac connection, the climax to the Hydaelin/Zodiark plot we've been expecting.
Personally, I'd welcome Old Sharlayan for its aesthetics and themes; Garlemald seems the obvious place for now, but the Empire was "obvious" for 5.0 before FanFest and 4.5 swept the rug and brought us to the First.
Forspoken means bewitched or charmed. If that really is the title (which I can believe, if fits the naming scheme and is the right time of year for a reveal) that doesn't tell us a whole lot beyond that maybe a character or characters being tempered would be a major plot point.
Some more speculation on Forspoken. It might be something else.
I'd suggest waiting and seeing if a JP copyright is released. Those tend to have color based titles ("Azure Skies of Ishgard," "Crimson Liberators," "Jet-Black Traitors") so if anyone sees something like that released along with an EN / DE / FR title copyright, that's more likely to be right.
Without any further information I couldn't say what the "Forspoken" title refers to. 6.0 maybe, maybe not.
Wouldn't they have had to have trademarked it by now though?
Shadowbringers was TMed in May. We should only be a couple months behind, with the original announcement planned for November.
Well, if nothing else they put almost the entirety of the Resistance Weapon's alternate path in Heavensward content. That's... something to consider.
Sharlyan i can see playing an important role, Meracydia however i just do not see that being the focus of 6.0, it is more abandoned now and there just is not any focus on it like there is Sharlyan and Garlemald. like we already have a map for the three continents i would like to see it filled out more before we go anywhere else. Plus it might just be this section of the resistance weapons tied to HW, the next one in 5.45 might be tied to SB and 5.55 might be ShB. I still hold to it that 6.0 will deal with both Sharlyan and Garlemald, otherwise it would not feel like the season 1 finale it has been toted as being.
Forspoken definitely fits the sort of interesting archaic language that the English localisation likes to lean upon. At the same time, it might just be something tied to a completely different game. Maybe another classical style JRPG along the lines of Octopath Traveler or something related to Final Fantasy XVI?
