Either SMN and RDM should lose their Raise or BLM should get a Raise.

First off, Embolden is not weak, it's just no longer as strong as Radiant Shield + Devotion, added to the fact that SMN is pretty significantly higher damage output than RDM. This needs to change, preferably by increasing Embolden either to 20% diminishing or 10% static (and expanding it to include all damage).

Secondly, yes, all of this, but this is how we've arrived at the dilemma of the thread. One of two things should happen:

1. Verraise should get a nerf as well as Resurrection on SMN to make it cost more MP and remove Dualcast from it, offering at least slightly more role balance
2. BLM is given something to compete with the two, giving much better (in my opinion) role balance


The third option, where nothing changes on this front, WILL result in BLM be shunned for progression no matter what kind of damage/quality of life increases it gets. This will undoubtedly mean that I (and hundreds of other BLM mains) will be bullied into playing RDM or possibly SMN for progression, and then after progression the hundreds of RDM mains will be pushed into playing SMN or possibly BLM (or even worse: BRD). We do not want this. Please please please hear what is being said.

Someone please explain to him why giving RDM a TA is a bad idea. Preferably mentioning that it makes another class mandatory (NIN syndrome). To clarify 20% diminishing (Assuming it gets buffed to affect all damage) over 20 seconds is an average of 12% damage increase over the duration, which although less frequent still lasts longer and is stronger than Trick Attack. We'd end up with locked in RDM and NIN slots. While it is different it's not necessarily better or healthy for the game. As well this would probably also push out BLM quite a bit, depending on what buffs they got, which is not good either. As you said earlier, not trying to sound snarky here text is hard, parties want to be fed not feed, this would play mightily into that no?

I personally think Verraise should be nerfed too, but I wouldn't be okay with that as the consolation buff. Verraise already costs 25% MP and if it's removed from Dualcast it's fine. RDM doesn't have innate MP recovery like the other two casters (aside from lucid).

giving blm rez, will not make them more desirable, cause the blm will only complain wasting their swiftcast, they need badly for mechanics.. and blm often wont rez till theyre in the ice astral too (might as well let the healer hardcast the rez..)

You are more than welcome to do those things if you want, but we are talking about BLM/the caster role at the high end with regard to balance. This is in the same vein of people who say BLM's damage is fine when all they do is 24 man raids and expert roulettes (and to be honest even in those right now the damage is not fine).

Been lurking this title but I think I'll add my 2 cents. For those wanting BLM to have a raise, consider this: Lore wise, BLMs are mages that focus on dark arts. Their magic is based on destruction. SMN's have always been pseudo-healers ever since FFIX, so it makes sense for SMN's to have a raise spell. RDM's having raise also makes sense seeing as they have the ability to use both white and black magic...so them having a raise makes more sense than BLM having raise.

So if you base this logic on lore, BLM having a raise makes no sense. Not sure why people keep saying BLM needs something that makes no sense for them to have. Also, if your jelly because RDM can insta-raise with dualcast...also consider this: If BLM had a raise spell, given their really unique mp regeneration, they can pull off more raises than SMN, and BLM can quickly regain MP via Blizzard spells.

Case in point: BLM doesn't need raise. Argue if you want, but my point will still be a valid reason. Back to lurking.

The only argument against it that I've thought up so far is that it might be used for grief play in the duty finder, which is generally very well-responded to by the community management team, or at least I've received responses in a VERY timely manner about my multitude of harassment tickets I've submitted. Other than that, I see literally nothing wrong with it. There is incentive to use it for the caster, it allows BLM to compete for the caster role slot on more equal footing, and it works around ALL the aforementioned issues in my previous post.

Ok, so the ressurected player dies immediately when they stray too far away from the caster?
Might as well Raise the player normally by a healer instead of them potentially dying again and have another stack of the weakened state so they do even less DPS next time because they didn't bend over for the BLM.

This is already an issue that happens when players move/use skills too soon before they are healed up. They then get Brink of Death immediately. hashtag be more careful.

Increase the tether distance to 15 if you prefer/are concerned about having to walk out of range for mechanics, etc. Besides, how often do you see the Dragon Sight tether break? You bet your bottom dollar that both the targets (one whose damage is increased and the other whose actual life is on the line) are going to make absolutely sure that it doesn't break, save for some knockback bogusness, but to that I say again hashtag be more careful. Hell, add a free Surecast/Arm's length to that entire duration, if you wish.

Furthermore, "raising normally" is always an option when there is a healer or two. Same thing goes for RDM/SMN, if convenient it's better for the healers to raise anyway so the DPS jobs don't lose their uptime.


It's not a perfect option, that's the whole point, it's just an option vs what the job has right now, which is absolutely nothing.

This would only see use in premades where people know what they are doing. Everywhere else would either be BLMs refusing to use it because of the responsibility or people not wanting to be the target of this poorly thought-out ability.

I'm glad it's not in the game and never will be.

God forbid there would be people who *gasp* know what they're doing. Lord help us. And certainly every "raw damage" BLM in the game will be turning down an opportunity for a 10% damage buff and players who die will certainly be declining raises!

Not only is it a bad idea, it's also an "optional" 10% damage increase. I'd rather have BLM get a damage buff that they can freely use without any awful drawbacks, just like pretty much all of the buffs in the game.

As nice as it is that you are engaged in coming up with ideas to improve BLM, I would really rather not see this same idea presented again. And again. And again.

I say that not to be rude, but because it's gotten to the point where your commitment to bringing this suggestion up in post after post is distracting from anything else of value you might have to contribute.

I'm not saying that BLM damage is alright. I'm saying that you're arbitrarily leaving out viable options of playing the game just to further your own point, trying to present them as facts when they're just your opinion on the matter. In regards to high end balance, giving BLM rez will do nothing to help them be more viable in end game content, as the things holding BLM back are low damage due to lack of mobility and the lack of synergy with other classes.

There's been plenty of suggestion to improve BLM's damage on the BLM megathread but the lack of class synergy is something that has only ever lightly been touched upon. The meta is why it is because the synergy between all the classes involved is insane. Perfect CD alignments on top of the general buffs they grant the group are impossible to match with the way the game is currently set up and honestly nothing short of a complete overhaul will ever change that. SMN is close to breaking into the physical meta because it has some synergy and utility but this topic is actively trying to nerf SMN and bringing it back to square 1 instead.

What I mean by a complete overhaul is that they would need to make select classes synergy better with one another on a similar level that DRG currently has with BRD+MCH. Things like giving DRK a skill that increase the damage the enemy takes from Magic attacks, changing RDM's Embolden to grant extra magic damage instead of physical, making Ley Lines a group wide SpS buff, and so on. These are the types of suggestions that would broaden the meta in a way that would be beneficial to everyone by allowing every comp to be viable in its own way.

Problem is that they have way too much sustained damage so they can not have synergy. BLM not really have any "real" burst window like how summoner can do insanely high burst during opener. Most buffs last only 10 - 15 seconds and blm can not have much benefit during that time because they dont have any ogcd damage abilities. BLM would benefit more from sustained buffs than temporary buffs.

Honestly from a quick look BLM does lack dmg since theit big beater is a potency everyone can get and they also lack something to give them more ooomph.
As I said in the other thread in FFVI there was the skill Buff that doubled the INT for the next spellcast, I think they should think about adding it especially since SAM has kaiten

At any rate, I'll stop hammering at it, if you wish, but just watch the thread fill up with more "but infinite MP and uptime and muh'splosions" which is exactly the kind of mindset we should be getting away from. BLM is "raw damage", sure (although we should probably take a hard look at what that means and consider changing it, this is a party-oriented game, so having "selfish DPS" flies in the face of synergy), but it's also a member of the caster role, and the other two caster role members have access to Raise in varying degrees. BLM really should be able to compete on the same footing in this area, otherwise here I go, ready to be stuck playing Rez Dispenser during progression (as well as hundreds of other salty BLMs).

To be blunt, anyone who disagrees with this (edit: the concept of balance for the sake of progression, not my specific idea) just clearly doesn't see the value of raise and why it's an issue. They are welcome to disagree, but man. Can't wait to be stuck playing a job that I don't want to play for an entire raid tier. Again. And likewise, RDMs just want to play their job, too. They don't want to have to switch to BLM or SMN after progression because it's stronger and because their dispenser is less valuable at that point. Yes, I don't see value of raise cuz I have two g-ddamn healers in my group, I'll let them do their job. If you can't progress, pay more attention to mechanics or find another party.

The value of Raise in progression is the difference between having to wipe and going on to learn the next mechanic(s).


Also, the consensus on Manashift is that BLM is actually the WORST job to use it. And once more, it is better to have and not need than to need and not have.

The problem is that outside given the option of raising to BLM your idea doesn't make them good for progression either, in fact the whole tether idea is just too much to work around during progression when other options are much simplier and effective.
When I said that an idea to work should be simple I did not intend for it to be easy, but I meant that it should not need leaps of imagination and execution to reach a conclusion that in the end other jobs can do for 1/4 of the effort and at least 3 times as much.

There are plenty of problems with the tether idea and frankly I think that for the risk involved even a 3 min CD is too much.
Problem is that if each time some1 brings costructive criticism to your idea you leash out to them, there's no point in discussing it in this thread or another.

I mean I can make a pro and cons if you wish at this point

BLM is not desired in high end content just cuz there're lot's of movements mechanics and that's pain for BLM plus job doesn't bring unique utility to a group. And not because BLM has no raise...

I don't think dealing with mechanics is that tough with a tether, Dragon Sight does just fine, the only time I've EVER seen it break is during Delta Attack in Neo because everyone moves in a different direction. Could be a shorter CD, could be a longer tether, DOESN'T EVEN HAVE TO BE A TETHER, I'm just trying to figure out how to make it less "white magic"-y. I think the tether puts it more into necromancy which works with the lore much better than "oh bringing you back to life = white magic."


By all means, write a pros and cons list, discussion is what we want, not hurdurryourstupid. And again come up with your own list of suggestions (everyone) to resolve the issue because "it's fine how it is" clearly is not the case. As I already stated I think the biggest con of this particular suggestion probably is the devs envisioning grief play where in the duty finder a healer lets someone die deliberately or the tank deliberately cleaves someone so the BLM can get their raise damage in.

Not having raise is just another reason why BLM is not taken for progression, not THE ONLY reason. See also my comment about suggestions regarding raise do not nullify suggestions regarding damage. BLM certainly needs more damage/playability, but it could ALSO use raise. Hence this thread.

You bet your bottom dollar that even if BLM had a raise it could use only every 3 minutes that I would absolutely have used BLM for progression over rez dispenser, and WILL in 4.2 if they decide to implement it somehow, off-gcd or not (assuming that it gets other much needed buffs/qol).

I see that you not only want raise but other improvements, but having it only to be able to join progression parties sounds weak.

before starting the list, you cannot compare the punishment of breaking dragon sight for a spare secs to what you propose, as you said if the tether is broken the raised one dies, which is not the same as beign separated for a few clips from a dragon sigh which is a 5% dmg loss only, not to mention you regain it once you return in the range of it.
It also means that if in those 20 secs the BLM dies the raised target dies too, which makes it less appealing to prog.
Not to mention there are multiple things that current raise can do and that raise simply can't because of that restriction.

At this point if you want to give something that is also unique and maybe even in lore, why not copiying the soulstone mechanic from wow? BLM already has some mechanics taken from warlocks anyway

YES. Yes. yes. The entire point of the raise CD is just to have it. To use it in an emergency, or when the other members of the group that have raise die. That is the whole point of raise. Note also that it is better for the group when the DPS don't raise, but they are capable of doing it when they have to, in particular Rez Dispenser can just save the entire party in 8 GCDs. It's still better if the healers can do it so the DPS don't lose uptime.


The caster role is off-balance, and ONLY ONE CASTER is chosen for static groups/raiding (if at all, thanks to BRD+MCH). Why should that one caster be BLM when it doesn't bring recovery tools of any kind AND is the only one in the role that doesn't have Raise (not to mention its issues with dealing with mechanics and its lower damage, those are for the other thread). This is the issue that needs to be fixed. The class is hands-down THE WORST to bring for progression, and quite frankly even if you have no idea how to play RDM or SMN, you can probably contribute more to the group by fumbling through those jobs than bringing BLM (this also happened during SCOB in 2.2, I was there Gandalf).

It doesn't have to have a 3 minute cooldown, that was mostly to balance the damage gain from it. And, as someone astutely pointed out several pages back, we are attempting to avoid "homogenization of the caster role", so one Rez Dispenser, one swiftcast/hardcast, and one long recast sounds like a pretty good spread to me. If you want to can the increased damage idea, I'd recommend maybe 90 seconds recast, the only thing is the increased BLM damage from it adds to the "how does this skill reconcile with the lore/vision of the class" point of concern.

The target doesn't necessarily have to die if they go out of range, maybe they could get fetters. Or hell, could raise WITHOUT weakness and only if they die to the tether range THEN they get weakness. There's even more incentive to use it. I just think that point would set it far aside from the current raises in the game, helping to reconcile the fact that the "raw damage/black magic" caster has the ability to bring a player back to life.

Also, incentive not to die is not a new thing. The way that raise works currently leaves the player with lowered HP and if they move/execute actions before getting healed back up, they die again anyway. There is already nuance to well-timed raises, so I see no difference here.

Sure, that sounds like an ok suggesttion as well, sort of like a pre-raise, but I suppose I don't really see how that reconciles with "black magic". That's one of the big highlights of "necromancy" is that it fits right in to black magic lore. (also I did not play WoW in depth, so I don't really know the ins and outs of their classes) I suppose it could be construed as a targetable walking dead on any player..?

Soulstone works that you give a buff to some1 that once they dies they can resurrect themselves (eventually they made it castable to dead targets)

I wouldn't insist much on the necromancy lore of black magic because tbh necromancer is another caster altogether and as some ppl have said the thaumaturges were more like undead busters than anything.
If anything you should reconcile it with the void and souls and hence why a soulstone might fit

Also my concern with BLM diying and causing the death of the raised target resides with the fact that random deaths can be expected during prog for w/e reasons, if the goal is making BLM more enticing in prog then said addition must be extremely good for prog and not just a little either it must be massive because the community have labeled BLM useless in prog

If they would give BLM ability to rez ppl with no penalty, people would start looking at them from another side. Then 3m cd would be justified. But pretty sure that's unfair to healers and will never happen.
Im against giving BLM boost from resurecting ppl, will cause abuse for example from healers dying.

That all makes sense except the last point, in my opinion. BLM will NEVER "be better" than RDM in prog, probably no class will, but if it's even just good enough for it, I (and hundreds of other BLMs) would prefer to just play BLM over rez dispenser. As it stands now it's just straight up awful, but between having a recovery tool (Raise) and being stronger/having more options for movement/handling mechanics, it would be much further along this front than it is currently.

Yeah that's my main concern, abuse/griefing. See also: Rescue. But how else do we reconcile all the points of concern (infinite MP, the lore, the homogenization, the uptime, "raw power", etc) about the job having Raise?

Personally i do think that SE buffed balance simply to bait ppl in playing AST and nerfed it when the numbers of AST were ok for them, but I can be wrong
But because of that I think that they need to pull something along that lines to make ppl really care about BLM in prog

Wouldn't giving Blm a raise kind of get in the way of allowing Rdm to be Rdm, though? If all 3 casters offer a res then what will truly differentiate between the casters? Won't this just shift the problem Rdm is facing of people dropping for Smn or at least feeling pressured to do so onto them switching to whichever of the other 2 that yields the highest damage? It just shifts the problems around. I think perhaps the reason you are meeting resistance on the idea of Blm having a raise is because currently [at least to me] Blm is the most rewarding once a fight has been practised thoroughly. This is true for every class of course but moreso for Blm. So I feel that is where their niche is. High damage, no recovery. Rdm offers recovery and utility with less damage, smn less utility less recovery more damage. I understand your reasons for suggesting a raise but I can't shake the idea that if and when Blm get the damage buffs we desperately need and IF they were given a raise then Blm would eclipse not only Rdm but Smn as well. So prog would still be one sided and then Smns will start crying again and no one wants that :p It's very difficult to bounce ideas around for something that to a lot of people seems like a really undesirable idea. It's not that everyone hates your ideas and are just trying to drown out your insight by imagining all the "splosions" [cringe] It's just that bending space and time and logic and lore and whathaveyou for the sake of something that feels so convoluted seems a little moot when there's a more obvious balance to be found amongst the casters. Providing Rdm and Blm get some buffs to cement them either side of the cozy spot Smn is in right now. Also being a snoot and vitriolic at people isn't very encouraging and leaves a bit of a bad atmosphere tbh.
