Except people did keep their relics and gear and it really mattered because players who got the best gear in 1.0 did get an advantage in reaching endgame and to start clearing Coil faster. Top raiders even got their Zenith faster than everyone else due to a bug with tome resets after a maintenance. If you're talking about the Legacy status, well we only pay $48 for 6 months in bulk, so if that isn't an advantage I don't know what is, though it's mostly a reward for subbing to the old version for a certain period of time but still. Never mind that once again, the issue isn't even solely about marriage but the cash shop treatment as a whole, just like the thread title "Isn't just vanity" implies, but ok.

To truly try to end this discussion. SE, moving forward at least try to tell everyone your clear monetization plans the moment you start hyping people for a feature. Don't just go an entire year "see this cool system we're planning to introduce, it's going to be cool and have these cool items to go with it" then many months later and just weeks before implementing that feature go "oh by the way you'll have pay extra for the items we got you so hyped for a year, by the way we still won't tell you their exact price until the very moment the patch goes live." If only it could be like "this is the feature we're planning, this part of the feature will be free and this part of the feature will be premium and this is exactly or around how much that premium feature is going to cost when it's implemented many months from now", that would be great. It's simple really.

You're half right here, though I don't agree it entirely I can at least see a reasoning behind it. Half of the highest level crafting recipes are Vanity items, and most of the high level gear is the best vanity. When those goals are replaced by cooler looking items in the cash shop, that goes out the window. Plus, almost every dungeon added, aside from obvious soldiery/poetics, is nothing but vanity armor since its so far below the average i.lv of players. SE even said back when CT was released, they would hope people who had I.lv90 armor would do it simply for vanity armor. Vanity armor is clearly a goal SE would like you to aim for. every goal, has a victory.

Entirely your opinion, and one many gamers would not share. The purpose of most(not all) game is enjoyment, the elements that make up a game are a means to that end. I'm sure most devs would tell you the games they create, the stories they put you in, and all their hard work pay off when a game becomes popular and people enjoy it. And not to be blunt, but games like Minecraft have no story, and are more wildly successful than even XIV.

Can you not see my friend, the elements of a game are a means to an end, and the end is to make sure people enjoy the game, or are happy with it... as happiness leads to positive reviews, reviews lead to better money, and in the end that comes full circle to the business side. IF they don't enjoy the game, the games elements are meaningless, and in an MMO, that means you lose money and subscribers. I will admit though his is my opinion, as with almost all of my posts.

But you'll be hard pressed to have me believe the purpose of the game is to collect I.lv gears and do storylines when games with no reasonable goal outside of fun (Goat Simulator, Minecraft, etc) exist and are wildly popular. I will not deny that for the consumer, the purpose may lie in I.lv gear, as that is what they could find fun. Fun is entirely subjective and will change from person to person. But from the devs point of view, I'd like to believe that their purpose in creating all new content is to make people happy with it, rather it be in challenge or in name, or interesting story elements... all these wonderful things come together for the better purpose of keeping subscribers happy and enjoying XIV.

So what I argue is not so different from you, but the subjectiveness of purpose and fun are something we have to look at when considering things like this. Neither of our opinions is an absolute.

What I did grasp in 25 pages (with my limited reading comprehension skills) is that you all sound like a bunch of entitled children with no grasp of how the real world works.

It's a game. I would even venture to call it a great game. Just sit back, chill out and enjoy it. If I got so worked up about this nonsense as what I have been reading for the past few days I just don't know where I would find the time to have any actual fun.

I did, I could have really cared less about the rest of the stuff, I put the cd in my comp once and burned it to my itunes, and never listened to it, I played the dvd once and forgot about it, looked at the artbook once and put it back in it's pretty little box. I use the CE/preorder bonuses almost daily. They were what made it worth the 100 dollars to me. I've gotten my money's worth out of it

Not really, CT was supposed to be released at launch but for some technical problems, it was released on patch 2.1. That was pretty much the excuse they used to avoid being yelled at by the players who were saying "Why do you give us ilvl 80 when there's ilvl 90 gear available!!!". Even though, for fresh players, it was a blessing so they were able to get gear as they gather tomes for the ilvl 90 gear. Also, the vanity system was implemented some patches after launch, so it was not a priority back then.

Again, we know nothing about how these two marriage thingies will turn out until more info is released. We should stop being this subjective about this matter, because with that mindset exposed, I can pretty much say "ok, I find FUN!!! and it's my PERSONAL GOAL to spend MY!!! money on stuff from the cash-shop because I feel like a reward for my hard work. So I want more stuff behind a moneywall". You must accept that statement based on your logic and respect it. It will become valid as well and you can't argue against it. In any case, at the end of the day, a lot of people will end up buying stuff in the cash-shop, I want SE to respect their politics of "no pay to win", in said section. I see it a lot in my server. There're plenty of people with Sleipnir and these minions. I've talked to several people about the system and they will pay for it if they need to. So, regardless if you like it or not, SE will see profit coming from it and will keep doing it.

Oh, the retainers... they're an account service, in the account tab, it's not a "cash shop" item. They... technically... respected the "no pay to win" in the cash-shop. That's so Lawful Evil... :P

A Friend of mine was walking around in a full Arachne Set

Arachne Robe (goes for 1mil)
Aracane Pants (goes for 1.4mil)
Kirimu Gloves (goes for 800k-1mil)
Kirimu Boots (goes for 1mil)
Platinum Circlet (goes for about 500k->1mil)
Thats around 4700000-> 5400000 gil.

For a player that just got to level 50 it was a pretty big jump to go from i50->i110(HQ) in just a few minutes.
I asked them how they did it, guess what they did.

Bought $40.00 Platinum Plan, and sold the Promise of Devotion for about 5mil each.

Its not mandatory but if you have the money to spend it can get you a huge boost.

Think of it as an "Optional" Power boost.

It really isn't that hard to understand, it's just that the people defending the cash shop are like parrots repeating the same argument over and over while refusing to hear logical complaints.

Some people like to raid. Some people like to play dress up with the glamour system. Some people like to collect mounts and minions. Some people like to gather and craft. Just because SOME people don't like to collect mounts and minions does not mean that mounts and minions should not be considered content.

Let's start putting the new dungeons coming out in future patches into packaged DLC that you can buy similar to map packs through the cash shop. Dungeons are boring to me so I don't see them as relevant content. ... /End Sarcasm

People like Final Fantasy and SE as a whole, maybe their games got them through though times in their childhood or maybe they just really like belts and zippers. Thus they feel the obligation to defend the thing they love the most at any cost, regardless if it actually ends up alienating other far more rational fans of the series that don't like being nickel and dimed.
