Oh there is definitely that aspect and that definitely does happen. I'm a woman in the IT field so I'm well-versed in those instances.
But having the term for it has just kind of made it morph into something more unreasonable than simple equality. Two things tend to happen. One is that women get a pass for doing it to men or other women like I mentioned. I hate that. I do not talk down to my male or female co-workers or subordinates. I treat them like I would want to be treated.
The other thing is that women start to find it around every corner. I'm in some lady gaming groups and someone talked about a guy saying something as innocuous as "Play a better game". Nothing gendered, definitely something I had seen guys say to other guys, but because it was a guy saying it to a woman, it was mansplaining. Guy was being a cocky jerk, yes, but not because he was talking to a female. Not every interaction of a guy saying something to a woman is mansplaining but because it's gotten so prevalent it causes us to act like victims in every instance.
Thanks for restoring my faith in humanity lol.
It's easy to get bogged down in all the lunacy online that you forget there are actual reasonable human beings in the world.
Most of what we're exposed to online are just people finding problems everywhere and causing drama because ultimately it makes for better '' entertainment ''.
It's the same whenever a new game is announced and I am guilty of this sometimes too, there's always a small group that gets outraged over one thing or the other, and then there's a reaction to those people that is five hundred billion times larger.
And the reaction to those handful of people makes it seem way bigger than it actually is and like some massive widespread issue.
Edit: Obviously misogyny is real and an actual problem, but people also do have a tendency to see it everywhere and to act like every instance of being questioned or having someone be a jerk towards you or whatever is that, which it isn't.
To be fair you probably don't spout the tripe he does on a regular basis.
I fall in the camp where I find people offensive for finding other things offensive then complaining that those people do not find the same things offensive and due to that should be purged from the internet. :)
Anecdotal but I post on alts cause I did end up leaving the game after joining around 2017 because I had people come after myself and my FC at the time due to some of things I said on the forums.
So I am sure if you piss people off enough people will go after someone.
Yeah, I've never had that happen to me. I've never had a stalker, and the few times I've met or been messaged by someone from the forums (either lurker or regular) in-game it was a friendly experience. I'm not aware of bad interactions happening to this extent to any other regulars I know either.
That's a weird bubble to live in; I think it may be healthy to step out of it and just ignore the whole debate all-together and focus on enjoying the game.
Also there is a ignore list in this game.
