Things that other games did right~

Ragnarok Online:
I really enjoyed storming another guilds castle and trying to take it over.
Upgrading your class. Ex. Novice to Swordsman to either Knight or Crusader and so on.

FFXI:
Massive amount of content. (Racked up over 400 days and still never even seen sky, limbus or finished any of the story lines, haha)
Every level felt like a reward.
Gave everyone a reason to fear dying.
Capped Areas. This kept a need for gear of many different levels and also greatly helped out the economy.
Tons of content to unlock.
Jobs were very well thought out and each job felt like something different and new.
One character needed to play all jobs.
Though it sucked having to party to do anything it created a really great community environment.
Partying (Exp and NM fights) actually required strategy and fast thinking when bad situations would arise.
There was lots of content throughout the entire game, and not just endgame.

Phantasy Star Online:
Kept true to its roots and felt like a Phantasy Star game.
Really fun boss fights.

Aion:
PvP content was very fun.

WoW
Loved the gathering and crafting and battlegrounds PvP
Lots of quest

FFT/FFTA/FFTA2
Definitely the class/job system...(secretly hoped XIV would have gone that route)
Lots of quest/missions in addition to main storyline
Weapons/armor/accessories/mobs

FF6
Best storyline/villain/heroes/lore
Huge inventory of weapons/items/armor/mobs

FFX
2 best parts...Blitz ball and the secret Al bed alphabet (remember having to search for all of the runes to be able to speak to the desert people...pure awesome)

FFXII
Interesting characters and huge zones and mobs
Gear/weapons
drops that were sold to npc merchants opened up a bazaar for rare items

FFXI
Almost everything about XI, storyline/lore/quest/exp grind/endgame/level sync/job system*even with all the elitist attitudes*
races
crafting to some degree
Mog House
lots and lots of gear
Not every piece of gear had/needed a stat to be good...
Memorable NPC's
Awesome expansions...
Losts of unknown that added mystery and mystique/lots of things to do
The one game where I've sat down for 15hrs straight of gameplay and was not even tired

FFCC
Loved the races and their lore
Family of crafters was a nice concept

I'm so bored in XIV... so here's a few things off the top of my head that I would steal from other games

WoW
- Flying mounts
- Proper Auction house
- Dungeon finder / Raid finder (the single greatest evolution to the mmo genre IMO)
- UI customisation / addons
- Fun achievements
- Responsiveness

Sword of the new world / Granado Espada
- Character AI system (AFK grinding)
- Teleport system (you create your own teleport points wherever you want and can go back to them)

Aion
- Character creation

Phantasy star universe
- Whips
- Slicers
- Room customisation / decorations / GACHA Machine!

Rappelz
- Dungeon ownership system, where guilds can fight for ownership of a dungeon and current owner gets paid taxes by users

SW:TOR
- Light sabers? ; ;
- Group quests / Dungeons / Group cutscenes

FFXI
- Thief, Ninja, Utsusemi :p
- Assault
- CoP missions (before nerfs) in terms of story and group challenges

Im usually not very judgmental but those were absolutely awful....
just jokin... I really don't agree with the bold excerpts but Whips, Thief, ninja, fun achievements and responsiveness sound like winners

Final Fantasy XI:
-Job uniqueness
-Final Fantasy quality story.
-Made end game content lasting even when it is two expansions behind.
-Gear was rarely outdated and long saught after for years.
-Highly rewarding for anything accomplished.
-A strong connection to the world and people around you.
-While not the largest in numbers, sometimes that is a good thing, and FFXI showed that. Having sometimes a smaller community makes it a stronger community. FFXI flourished on this, and I hope FFXIV doesn't get too big, but not too small either.

WoW:
-Being able to properly cater to a casual and hardcore audience at the same time, without one feeling left out. Rewarding the hard workers, but letting casuals enjoy the same content as the hardcore at their own pace.
-Dungeon finder system.
-Keeping content dynamic.
-Able to keep themselves optimized through the years.

RIFT:
-Wardrobe system.
-Very inovative open world events.

Aion:
-Very well made areas.
-Top notch character customization system. (Even if you could make a character simply look silly and out of place.)

Star Wars: The Old Republic:
-Extremely well made story/questing system. Keeping you so interested in it's main story that you didn't even really care what level you were. FF series is heavily based on story and they should of developed methods to keep you into the story and growing your character at the same time.
-Made your character feel like they were an important contributer to the game's universe.

Phantasy Star Online:
-While not an MMO, it still developed methods of you wanting to come back to the game every day. Aiming for large rewards with long term goals.

This is something I think most MMO's could take a lesson from. Being able to do everything on one character eliminated the need for multiple characters - alts were just storage boxes or curebots. As a result, I think everyone that played XI ended up far more invested in their character than most players do in other games. You've put years of work, built a reputation and made friendships all on one person. The community was a lot stronger for it, and it's that much harder to let go.

+ Storyline progression + Realistic graphics, some of the things I loved about XI.

Of course, I love the open worlds in other MMO's, and flying mounts. Swimming. So much fun to really explore every inch of your MMO's world and not get stopped by an invisible wall.

Wow tanking system

Taunt abilities don't generate a static amount of threat, but gives you threat equal to "threat of person on top of monster's hate list"+1
Benefits of this system are that it makes duo tanking possible & when the tank dies and is raised he still has a way to regain main hate. It doesn't mean that the monster will always stick on the tank, because you still need constant threat generation in order to stay on top.

When targetting the monster it will show a sub target of the person who is on top of his threat list. This helps tanks and healers a lot!

The secret world. All of its updates via video are exciting and generate interest. regardless of its your type of game or not their marketing campaign in this aspect is far better then anything ff14 is doing. Hell, when is the last time we even saw an information in the form of a "whats to come video".
