I specifically recall two of them running with the rotation of the laser so they died fast, and a third died by the end of it since I think they were moving from one side to another chasing the AST. Fourth was a BRD that showed up missing HP and had all the time in the world to heal up but instead got cleaved with the AOE.

Had a rogue at lv 56 queue up for trials who was also a Lv 80 WHM and didn't unlock ninja job. Also said trial had a tank who stood there and looked pretty. No fast blade, no DPS skills. Just stood there to look pretty and auto attack. I ended up being the OT as a DPS cause I was the only one going for the adds to peel them off of the healers. Thankfully it was just a lv 50 trial so it wasn't too difficult. Only one wipe and new mechanics I never seen before.

Well i think I' just had the smoothest Anamnesis Ayndr run in a while. Everything went so well, there was only one death (me, and on Kyklops), AoE damage, mechs and single target was usually on point and we even used Starshard on the last wall-to-wall pull.

I died. Then I Died. I died again.

Healer, whatever.

I know this feeling when I was playing 11 as well. The searching, the auto-translate pming players hoping they were willing to come to you to exp or even not afk. Shiva server was just dandy for that.

Though you have reminded me of the one time I leveled my FF11 BRD from 37-50 in a 42 hour run. Those Crawler's Nest parties were amazing.

I was never in a party with a BRD lol.

I'm sorry to the two sprouts in the Aurum Vale I abandoned about 30min ago, but I did not see anything going successfully when the level 48 AST(with almost everything else, including the other healers, at 80) was using level 32-38 gear. The fact you both out geared the AST makes it even worse.

Only RDMs can hold that much power out of Eureka. That's why they're Eureka tier.

Sometimes I wonder how some tanks ever get to level 80 not knowing the most important tanking basics: face boss away from party/outer edge of the arena.

Get The Burn in roulette and on the first pull I notice the tank is using a Novus weapon, so I quickly mention that and they swap after the pull. Did single pulls, which was annoying, but whatever. He wasn't squishy any more so that made me a happy healer. First boss I notice they just run up to the boss and then just stand there (even in AoE's). Didn't say anything because the boss jumps around anyway. Second boss they do the same and then keep the boss' rear in the fire pool, which meant that NIN couldn't do their rear positional. Easy fix, I run to the opposite side of the arena and Rescue tank. Problem solved.

Then there's the final boss... this boss has a breath attack that's a cleave AND a tank buster. This tank kept to their playstyle of having the boss face the party, so wanting to not wipe, I Rescue them to the outer edge of the arena. Things go well for a bit, but at some point the tank suddenly had 4 vuln stacks and were now squishier than a stress ball. They also stood in the puddles and were taking unnecessary damage and then at some point the other DPS died and I just... I manage to try and salvage the run, we get past the divebomb phase and then the tank is facing the dragon inside of the arena again and the cleave is coming so I Rescue them but I was too late and end up getting myself and the NIN killed. If I did nothing, then I think only the SMN would have died (and maybe 3/4 of the arena covered in puddles, which the tank definitely would have stood in). So on second try I, again, Rescue the tank to the outer edge of the arena, but then they run back into the middle and the tank buster cleave wipes us.

Final try and we clear, but we made sure to explain to this tank that they have to face the boss to the outer edge. They do this, but in the worst way possible: they constantly ran (during the fight I asked "why are you running?"). They were a level 80 PLD, had some level 80 gear... I just don't understand how they don't know the one most important tanking rule.

Running through the boss to face him away from the group because he may have a nasty cleave or two is one of the most basic things you learn in pretty much every MMO when you're playing tank. I remember doing trial roulette and getting ARR Titan and BOTH tanks didn't manage to turn him away, resulting in 4 wipes because our healers got cleaved. You couldn't even simply run to his back because they would provoke from time to time (classic aggro dick fight), turning him around again and he cleaved through your sweet safe spot.
They both had tanks at 80, they should've definitely known better.

I recently did my expert/ 80 roulettes on Astro for faster queue times and for several days in a row I got tanks who only used rampart and nothing else. And not even at the start of the pull, sometimes when only 3 of 12 mobs were still standing.
I mean... you tried. But when the last three mobs are about to die any second you really don't need to use it. You've already missed the boat, mate.
One of them was really nice and when I asked him to use more defensives (because yes, even as an overgeard AST in Twinning, big pulls hurt when you take them raw and are a pain to heal) he was kind of surprised and said he thought everything was fine since he wasn't dying. Apparently he thought of them as something like panic buttons you press only when shit hits the fan. And he oblidged and cycled through his cds nicely from then on, including Arm's Lengths which most tanks forget.
But the others either ignored it or replied with "you're a healer, just heal it". Commence Benefic II spam.
Time to queue as dps again I guess. Or maybe tank, Gunbreaker is close to 80 and I'm itching to do some max level stuff with him.

I have a feeling a lot of the newer tanks believe that Provoke is part of their regular rotation. I run into them all the time doing alliance roulette. I just don't even bother putting on tank stance until said tank(s) die, and I need to take over. But if they decide to provoke it, because apparently WAR(working on the 500 duties achievement for it now, but saw it as PLD and DRK, and will likely see it as GNB as well when I get to it) isn't a tank, right away when they get back up, I will drop tank stance and watch them die all over again. I don't have the patience to deal with aggro wars, so I will let whoever wants to take it take it, and when they die, hope they have enough brain cells to not provoke it when they get back up.

got into Il meg dungeon and by some luck we got one "very serious" dps.

nothing bad or aggressive but throughout the dungeon he keep blabbering tips and advice and "how to" to everyone. said to keep my rotation up, healer keep up dot, tank face anemey other way, that kind of stuff.

what baffle me and the others is when we ask "why so serious" question, his answer is "dont you want to become the top 1% group doing high end dungeon?", all of us answer more or less the same "dont really care for the 1% stuff"

and the guy is like outright shocked (he literally stop for a seconds to think and type lol) and ask "then? why do you play this game? why play mmorpg then?"

. . . i mean. . . for fun? for story? its final fantasy? for social and friends?

after finishing the dungeon, the tank ask simple question, "do you know the name of the last boss in shb?"

"yeah the guy with 2 color hair and he transform into this large black monster thing right? i finish it long time ago"

that answer pretty much all we need to know lol

Top 1%? No thanks. I settle for a meager goal of being in the top 50% of whatever I do.

^i know right? i mean i dont even rank my own player, i dont really care about 50% or even 1%, i play ff14 is for the story first and foremost.

hell iam sitting with 4 class at max level and none of them has materia slotted in their gear lol

They really do think it's a part of their hate rotation I see it constantly with tanks using provoke after they already have hate or they even pull with provoke. *face palm*

When I was new I also thought that I need to keep using provoke so I won't lose aggro. I knew better after a while, but back then - when aggro management actually still was a thing - it was indeed possible for a good DPS to rip aggro from the tank's hands. Pulling with provoke (or using it short after) was a thing back then. So I could understand why people are still doing it, if they perhaps came back from a longer break or from other MMOs where you still may need to do such stuff.

I also don't really remember how deep the game in detail actually teachs you about aggro management itself.

I pull (4 man only) with provoke because it's longer range than lightening shot and it's oGCD, so provoke + demon slice without hardly any delay.

Had more than a few instances over the years where tanks have been pretty upfront with this misconception as well. When it happens they're generally flabbergasted that provoke isn't meant to be used in such a fashion if they're the designated off tank. Usually cleaving the party one too many times and getting called out for it tends to set them straight however.

Had a tank in Aurum Vale pull mobs to the first boss room, not fight and die. The rest of us fight for our lives and die as well. This happens two more times before the tank finally explains that he wanted to die to reset the mobs so they wouldn't attack the rest of us and then he just gets rezzed for the boss fight. Despite being an overly convoluted plan, it would have been nice for him to have shared that info from the get-go.

With the tomes going on he probably thought it was the common strategy. Most groups i have been in have gone with this strategy and have no said anything. Does not excuse it, but it is understandable.

Just got out of a run where I want to cry.

Went into roulette as my alt BRD because I love mah pew-pews. Got thrown into Aery. Rest of party comp was WAR, WHM and SAM. I see the icons and go 'this'll be fast...wait, why is the whm and sam's hp so low?'

Turns out they were wearing the gear you get from WoD raid, along with a couple other accessories that pushed them to meet minimum ilvl requirements. WHM had the Shiva Ice cane, SAM had the lvl 50 whacky-stick you get from unlocking the SAM job. I suddenly had a Vietnam flashback from the one sam that came into the aery with lvl 50 base sam gear a long while ago while I was on AST...

Tank, thankfully was wearing the lvl 58 npc shop gear you could buy, but strangely enough they had put what I can only describe as mish-mash materia in it. Still better than the other two. First pull tank almost forgets tank stance, then puts it on after both the whm and I had aggro. They use Overpower once. Somehow I rip hate from the tank far too easily. During this spot, the whm just spammed Cure 1. No Cure 2, no Holy, no Assize. Just. Cure 1. Lovely start.

The tank, I realized, was also new to the dungeon, so the entire run consisted of single pulls. Spoodlers: the rest of the party ripped hate from them, but not as much as I did as BRD. Also other spoodlers: sam almost never aoe'd and only maintained one buff at a time on themselves. No Hissatsu: Kaiten either to boost their 3 uses of Higabana the entire dungeon.

First boss no one asks about the purple tethers since the tank decides to just yeet themselves to the boss. Tank gets the first one, and eats the Thundapawnch. He also eats the second one. Third one somehow the sam gets it...and just yeets themselves to me to pass it at the last second. I eat a Thundapawnch, and yet despite the sam's flailing and attempting to be a big boi with Meikyo spam, I'm still doing more damage than them.

Meanwhile the WHM is using Regens on everyone. On top of Medica II. Oh, and more Cure 1 spam.

Hallway to second boss I'm still ripping hate with the single pulls and my aoe's. Somehow I tanked more than the actual tank did, and I finally got a bit mad that, as a ranged dps, I really shouldn't be tanking or ripping hate this easily. So I told the tank to use Overpower first, then Mythril Temptest, as they had yet to use anything else at the start to grab hate besides the single Overpower at the start of fights. No response. *sigh*

Second boss the tank does not bother to move the boss out of the poison clouds, so the sam ends up eating a few. Sam is still flailing about with Meikyo spam, and yet I was still doing more damage as BRD on the second boss. Also I noticed something else: the whm didn't know or didn't have Esuna on their hotbar. I'm currently betting both.

The trip to the last boss was more Cure 1 spam/Regen/Medica II, with a single Holy and Asylum from the WHM. Sam used a couple AoEs, but then went right back to single-targetting. I was still ripping hate because apparently being on my alt xaela makes dragons just wanna roflwaffle you. War decides now was a good time to just spam Temptest and Fell Cleave by themselves, when we had that last large set before the boss door.

We finally get to Nidhogg, and I remind the party about the Sable Price mechanic. Just in time too, as I was done explaining the tank just sprints over and wants to grab hold of Nidhogg's booty. Well, he didn't like that. Fight ensues, and I'm still doing more damage than the freestyle sam. Intermission mobs die slowly, and while I'm aoeing my heart out, whm spams stone and the sam...is doing something. We barely made the dps check...and the sam goes right back to being freestyle. I decided to just say 'I'm done with this run' to myself, popped lb2 when it dropped, and got our clear.

Sam immediately drops out once the boss was dead. Somehow I got a comm and had no idea whose it was.

I sometimes pull with provoke on WAR since Overpower is a cone, it just makes it easier if the mobs are spaced out a bit when doing the initial pull. Typically Provoke into Overpower into Tomahawk as I am running to the next batch of enemies. It's VERY rare that I stop and use Mythril Tempest before moving to the second set. But as a DRK or PLD, I usually have enough range with the AoE to hit them all, and if not I Shield Lob/Unmend as needed. Will have to figure out what I will do with GNB(probably similar to PLD/DRK) when I start working on it's achievements.

I've maxed every combat class minus blue mage for the story alone. now im just doing basic gearing as an excuse to run content i like again and find glamours i didn't have without running content again. there's something for everybody.

Considering this was a strategy back in 2.0 as well for Aurumn vale, and some of the older level 50 dungeons like AK for boss rooms without need to clear, it makes sense still in 2020. Though usually everyone is (already) on the same page before it starts lol

I healed an e5s re-clear group that had wiped 3 times, all on Chain Lightning. We were using circle strategy, but people were not moving correctly for it.

After the 3rd wipe, one of the DPS says "Why don't we use the JOE strat?", to which everyone is confused, and has no idea what he's talking about. "Joe strat?" "What's that?" "What's JOE strat?" "I've never heard of that" "I only know circle" etc, to which one of the tanks responds "How about we stick with what people know?" Then that DPS explains "Joe mama better learn mechanics so we stop wiping!" Basically calling out the entire party.

THE NEXT PULL, that same DPS dies on the first mechanic, and was the only one who did so.

Needless to say, the rest of the group unloaded on him.

When he died to that, I instinctively used Swiftmend + Ascend to rez him, only to notice after Swiftmend that he was in the opposite corner of the room to where my stormcloud position was, and was thus out of reach. An honest mistake, as I'm generally quick to rez someone upon death. But for some reason, he chose to watch me in particular BEFORE that happened, then accused me of intentionally wasting the Swiftmend and not rez him. Like he was trying to find a scapegoat for his own embarrassing epic failure.

After a 4th wipe, the group bashed him for calling them out then dying on the first mechanic, then proceeded to disband due to 4 wipes. Soon after that, I joined another re-clear group, and that same DPS just happened to join that group after me, saw that I was in it, told the party lead that I should be kicked because I'm a trap, then left. That new group wound up clearing e5s on its first try, with me being top heals.

Wiping a few times in a clear party isn't all that uncommon even with a group of players who knows the fight decently well. After all it's still a group of strangers that never played together before. I had groups where the dps prefered to do all the ferrying for CL and I had to keep social distancing in mind to not get roasted and I had groups where even melees couldn't be bothered to move a single pixel, not even when we played it with 7 people because someone died shortly before and stayed outside because it's usually safer than potentially messing up the order. So I had to run halfway around Ramuh to pass it on.
Honestly, 3 wipes isn't that bad. I'd say pretty average, so not much reason to complain yet.
No wonder they got salty when he called the entire party out. I guess his fail afterwards was well-deserved, escpecially when he got all petty and blamed you and even asked to get you kicked in the next party.
Good thing you found a better party afterwards and cleared.

Just one thing: being top healer doesn't really mean anything. Keeping people alive is easy enough that groups would probably solo-heal it for the most part if there weren't some annoying "targets only healers" mechanics that get randomized by solo-healing it. Healers have such a ridiculous amount of downtime but I still regulary run into overachiever healers who top everyone off right away even with the next aoe not hitting for another 40s+.
The only times I can think of that are bit more healing intense for more than two aoes in a row are e7 colors & aoe waves during tornardo and add phase on Shiva because dps just love roasting themselves on lightning adds with the biggest nuke they have. You absolutely have to overkill by at least 30k.

Just had a WoD run where I got to see another 'provoke is part of my rotation' tank in action. Not only did they have their stance on, but they've provoke on cooldown while at the back of the boss, cleaving the entire party in almost every single fight. First boss? We limped across the finish line due to cleaves with 2/3rds of the Alliance dead. Second boss? He tried to MT but faced the dragon towards the party and nearly caused another potential wipe. Our party's tank had to voke and run the boss forward just to keep everyone from dying before trying to let the third alliance tank take over. To which the problem tank, you guessed it, voked and caused more problems. Did you know Cerberus can drop multiple juice puddles if enough people are dead and no one is in the gut? Me either, but I learned that today. We wiped at Cerberus and this time enough of the Alliance was fed up that we had to start yelling at the problem tank to at least do their job properly or let the third alliance tank take over after they, once again on the second pull, voked and faced the boss towards the party. Right before we Cerberus someone tried to convince the alliance with the problem tank, hilariously also the alliance that was assigned to go into the belly and didn't do their jobs, to kick them but nothing came of it. Which given the first wipe, makes me wonder if it was a premade.

Regardless we limped along through Cloud of Darkness, this time with both the other alliances awake and annoyed enough to do almost every mechanic perfectly in spite of the problem tank. Thankfully there's no way to twist that boss around and cleave people, else we might have gotten to see more forgotten mechanics ala Cerberus. Raid finished, comm'd our tank for at least trying to help and then left. Sad thing is that we actually did have someone give out helpful advice the entire time in Alliance chat, so I don't know if they were just ignoring it all or what but it was absolutely the most stressful CT raiding experience I've had in perhaps years.

A newbie isnt just being low level player. You can be a newbie to a dungeon, role, job, from 1-80. a dungeon experience at level 15 is going to be similar at level 80. You are going to have a tank, healer and 2 dps who may be new or learning at some point. It could be the dungeon, their job, the role, anything. You got to remember anyone can by a jump potion. that level 80 may have been only playing 3 days for all you know.

Also, Im a new player to ff14, i have accumulated 4 days of play time, and have a 32 whm, 31 pld, 31 drg. I have dealt with new players flat out who flat out did not communicate, or listen to the group at all. You picked one line of my post, when my whole post was sharing my experiences. I even made a reference back to my story which took place in tam tara deepcroft. here is my experience since you over looked it:

Tank did not put on his tank stance for the first few pulls, wasn't even pulling, just running up and hitting the mob with his ax. We are all begging him to turn it on. No reply. Im panicking as im not sure what to do, it was my first dungeon run with out my fc mates. I try to heal best i can. The tank refusing to do anything we politely ask of him as he was not doing his role at all. What boggles my mind was the fact the guy did do hall of novice as a tank. Which from my experience does go over role basics.

On a positive note, i did get learn how to vote dismiss people thanks to an FC mate. So next time this happens, i know what to do.

Haukke Manor is the fifth dungeon you get as a newbie (if you don't unlock Halatali before, which many newbies miss until later in). Sastasha, Tam tara and Copperbell are not even hard. Totorak raises the bar a bit, but not by much. So it's understandable they don't have much experience.

There are lots of players whose mother language is not English, they may not be used to seeing the chat, they may be on ps4 so they can't reply fast, this may be their first MMO experience, etc, etc. They may not even know all their skills names. The game does not a good job of explaining things, and the novice hall might easily be overlooked. I deal with newbies on a daily basis, rarely do I get one that does not listen when I calmy explain according to their level. I don't have 4005 commendations for nothing.

You cant speak for, or make excuses for other players.

Im a brand new player, I play on ps4 and joining an mmo after not playing one for 10 years. I recall being a 19 year old my first day logging in to ff11. Now once did i make excuses for me new-ness I learned from my mistakes, and was open for advice. Most players i played with where japanese, i learned how to use the auto-translate function.

also you claim the game does not explain itself well, from my experience it does. The game introduces you to stuff slowly as the story progresses, if you pay attention. There is also an active help guide, as well as hall of novice. You claim hall of novice can be over looked, no it cant. The current story takes you directly to it as well as the moment you hit level 15, every smith npc in the game with have a green icon above them, and on the mini map. You have to actively ignore it, and not pay attention to story dialog.

as for the ps4, any usb keyboard will work for it, and keyboards go for as low as $10 now a days.

Even if they cant type, they can read. you can look at the tool tips easy, you can read the party chat. You can also make text macro in advance, stating you are new, or do not speak english. New players need to have a willingness to learn. A lot, like myself, do and will ask questions, or consider advice. If the new player does not show a willingness to learn, they make the content harder for everyone. I have met a few new players who refuse to learn, and hey made healing/ tanking harder for me.

I was going to post this story in a separate post, but since you want to speak for other here it goes

I was tanking my first dungeon, It was sastasha, i was a gla just finished hall of novice. I forget the group comp as i did not stay in it long. I recall we had an arcanist, who had poor gear. They wore the viera race legs feet,and think hands. no belt, mish mash of melee acc, a level 5 hat and lvl 9 crafting top. I did not feel ok pulling big due to this but our healer kept trying to pressure me into it, by running ahead and pulling.

I asked him politely to stop that we have a player in low gear, and do not feel ok with pulling a lot. they ignored me and kept going. I stop and told him i asked nicely to stop, please stop. no one seem to care that we had an under geared player... I left shortly after as I am not skilled enough to carry a dps in such low gear. And i hate using the term carry. The healer tried to pick a fight with me, but too late I left.


Stuff like the above is why people become intolerant of new players, or players in general. People want to treat their group mates like npc, and try to make excuses to play poorly.

Lastly you having 4000+ commendation means nothing, it is not something to brag about. People will give others coms for any reason, or no reason at all. I am sitting on 30 coms simply because i queued up as a tank or healer. I got coms for having a conversation. You have yet to experience a bad player, count yourself lucky. Im just happy i have a great/ active fc so my experience with randoms is limited. But even in my limited time i ran into them.

tlrd: being new, playing on ps4, not speaking english, it being being your first mmo is not an excuse to play poorly, or ignore the group. that is what people are intolerant of.

I'm still waiting for the day that healers in The Praetorium figure out that if you just don't do any healing during the first part of the first Ultima Weapon fight then you won't pull aggro. Damage, and thus enmity generation, is essentially nil during that part but your regen or heal or whatever has full strength. The moment you use even the tiniest healing ability you're going to have aggro until his 2 buffs drop.

That said, he also does essentially no damage so it doesn't matter. I do get a chuckle watching a healer run around in a panic with Ultima Weapon running behind them and/or the healer jumping up and down on top of the tank like they could actually do anything about it.

correct me if im wrong but provoke does give enmity right, just puts you+1 on the mobs target list. asking because what i read vs tool tip is confusing.

That's exactly correct although I think it's a little bit more than just +1 these days.

The skill to use on Warrior if you're pulling at range is called Tomahawk. That might have just been a skill name confusion on their part, though. Definitely don't pull with Provoke.

Edit: Tomahawk not Lob lol. Victim of my own name confusion with Shield Lob.

played ff11 from 2004-2010 lol. Ive been kicked as a rdm for not wanting to play healer. Most of that was me talking about myself. I was not fond of some of the ff11 metas, like making rdm heal, or ninja tank.

signed a lvl 80 rdm/ lvl 90 dnc/ lvl 80 mnk

was playing as DNC (female), got into party with another DNC (female) and AST (also female)

tank: "damn iam a isekai protagonist now?"

only time i pulled with provoke is when I see a patrol mob coming to the party, but thanks for the tip.

Why would you want to big pull in Satasha anyways? People don’t have good AoEs at that level do they?
