look at battlefield 5 and the Angry Joe nonsense for a not-this-game, but current events example.

But it may not be just "handed out". If it is, then yeah, I can agree with you, that would be in poor taste. But we don't know until the actual event occurs. IF we got to do the fight, as close as technically feasible, with the same item and character level, and we completed it successfully, would that not be close enough to the same thing?
I mean.. would that be okay? Or is it the combination of "a very hard fight" + "servers shutting down and we won't get to experience this as it was"? (I'm legitimately asking, not trying to stir up drama).
If that wouldn't be acceptable, what item from 1.0 COULD make a return and not face this backlash?
Sooo... if the event item is renamed with "replica" in front will people calm down?
I understand enjoying exclusive items, and trophies from old conquests but some of you 1.0ers get those torches and pitchforks going over the silliest things.
On a side note I don't even care for the earrings and was going to toss them in storage...
That's largely irrelevant to FFXIV, though. I don't believe I've ever seen anyone here call people out for not 'supporting the game'. If anything, I see a lot of people encouraging players to not throw money at FFXIV. This is particularly true of the recent companion app, which received a lot of - understandable - backlash and has been hit with negative reviews.
So how does putting "Replica" in the front make people feel better when it'd literally be the exact same thing anyway again..? This is super petty.
Despite what a lot of people try to make it seem like, it's not a bad thing to be proud of trophies, or accomplishments, or having a unique shiny item that is extremely rare. The original was from a challenging fight in 1.0. Having the new earring listed as a replica will differentiate between those who obtained it i 1.0, and those who did not. People still get their glamour even if it says 'replica'.
I’m not trying to devalue your accomplishment, but how could you invest 5 months into a piece of content that was only available for 3 months? Rivenroad (Hard) came out in Patch 1.23b, which was released 2012.08.13, and then the 1.0 servers all went offline on 2012.11.12. Again, not trying to devalue anything, but the times don’t add up, unless I’m missing something.
Differentiation. Personally, I think they should have added “Replica” to it, and I don’t really know why they didn’t... well, except I think it was just laziness. Guess they didn’t want to have to code another item in. I don’t know.
You can invert this argument to pretty much be "It only matters to people because they want to hold the status symbol over others heads to prove how dedicated they are."
"Gawsh, Im so good. I was here in 1.0 doing the hardest content in the game. Im a true hardcore ffxiv fan! Git gud pleb!"
All the while not realizing that the symbol means less because of the fact discontinued content means no one can even attempt the feat. It becomes more of a point of who happened to be playing an iteration of the game that was widely lauded as being terrible. In that light, it smacks of elitism.
The earrings becoming an event item is a non issue if the whole point was that those who participated in it did it. They have memories of it. It was their own personal accomplishment. And thats what should matter. The earrings are, for all intensive purposes, bragging rights from a version of the game long since discontinued. It's nothing but internet hotdog measuring at this point.
