Why I Decided to Become an Elitist

A long time ago (in my first MMO 13 years ago), I got annoyed when people told me how to play my character. But as time went by and I got to know the game, I understood that many people don't tell me how to play my character. Instead, they are trying to help me improve.
I think many newbies mix this up (though it also depends on how advise is given). Especially since FFXIV is one of the few MMOs available for console, there are quite a few people for whom this is their first MMO. Usually we try to help these people when we encounter them in a party. We give them advise and hints, sometimes even try to make them realize in Sastasha that their god-damn PLD is NOT A DPS! But when you don't see any of your advise being taken as the dungeon progresses....it does get frustrating.

Unfortunately, in FFXIV, this happens very often. People don't listen, PS people have their chat closed for w/e reason and things go...bad. If a player leaves at that point, he is not an elitist or a jerk.....he is just FRUSTRATED! I never understood this as good as in FFXIV. I am a patient person, I try to help people, I often even heal idiots when I am not in a bad mood but at some point, I reach my limit and leave or kick then. I don't think I am an elitist because of that. In fact, I am not sure if I can count myself elite (I don't do or care for coils) but I think I am a fairy good player.
But people don't get good just like that. It takes time, effort and willingness to learn. That being said, my time is limited these days. On a working day I get to my PC at 10 PM and I go to bed around midnight. The few things I can do in that time are precious to me and I want to enjoy them, not get frustrated by a person that has no intention to improve.

I am not trying to force people to read guides but if you enter content, try not to be a liability and listen to what more experienced players tell you. Don't call others elitists because you suck and they don't cater to your whims.

Elitism as I have seen it traditionally used is when a player is intolerant of new and learning players or require higher levels of Performance than a piece of content needs. These days Elitism tends to be a term that just gets thrown around.

Its basically about being considerate.

Elitism in that form is bad for the game. Why? Cause it puts people off the game. Bad group experience will often lead to people quiting a game all together.

This is bad for everyone. New players are the lifeblood of MMOs without them the playerbase, and as a result the resources used to make new content, will shrink. Being considerate and helping new players isn't a waste of time. Those player's money will be helping to provide experienced players with new content. Experienced players aren't in any way more valuable to the game then brand new players as far as game revenue goes.

It's simply about being considerate the experience of other players and not being selfish. This is a group game.

Actually didn't lie at all. Everything I said was 100% true, I just didn't use names. Plus I apologized. I can admit when I am wrong. Dragging up a thread that happened over a month ago seems a bit sad though. Holding a secret grudge or something?

Nah, I was there to see the thread explode.. I'd say you lost a lot of credibility from that incident pretending to be an innocent bystander when you were in fact the very person you were writing a pity story about :) I don't remember any apologies, but that's not of consequence, you don't owe me any to begin with.
If anything, I haven't properly thanked you for the entertainment ;)

..All Im saying is no one got anywhere in this game all by themselves. This is a team effort. You didnt farm i130 or whatever by yourself (although you can get 50 by yourself if you wanted to) all that gear, not by yourself, even crafting.. Call yourself elitist and allow yourself to be branded by a word with too many definitions to inconveniently fit the situation for you, but you did not get there on your own. This is the attitude I saw from at least one post. Thinking they are badass and did it all themselves and sitting well with no wanting to help anyone get to where they are..despite ironically getting to their own point in the game through the help of others. This thread disgusts me.

You people are drunk.

DF = you can get any one. Some one spiritbonding. Someone wrong gear. Someone with zero experience who is trying to get some. I have had tons of DF pt where the person didn't know what to do, you talk them through it.

PF = Specific requirements that are checked before hand. I have never had a PF pt not have the required play met by the PF joiners. Yes, they can be used for brand new players or training pts. But they are mostly used for people with experience to gather others who have it and go farm.


If you want people to have a specific criteria before joining "your" DF pt, then it is you who is in the wrong pt and need to use PF, not the person who joined a random mash up.

There is absolutely never ever a need to be drama and rude. This is a video game, you should log on and play and have fun. If you aren't, it is your responsibility to leave, not the other person's to adhere to your desires.

Personal responsibility is a beautiful thing.

I thought it is only 'possible' to sneak into a PF group, lying about your things ("I've done this before!").

I guess we got a different opinion about when to use DF and when PF. As I said, I tried both.
Talked with friends about it and one of them gave me a better example for a fitting text in PF.

everyone just uses elitist as some dumb catchall and synonym for jerk. Most of this crap is just trolling, immature people. Leaving a duty roulette 3 sec in doesn't show some sign of superiority complex. They just hate that encounter. trolling in st? Trolls in general? Screaming obscenities? You guys can claim that elitist definition is 'the egotistical approach of players who think themselves superior' all you want, but we all see and know that it's really just used as an insult to call someone an a $$hole without the need of a censor. That's how it's used.

This is precisely my problem with the word elitist as is used here. It's a pejorative solely used in the place of far better words that more accurately describe the behavior. Elitist literally requires the person to think they are superior, but in most of these situations you couldn't possibly gleam that the person thinks they are superior at all. It's just the person being wronged applying a vastly overused word to the wrong situation. We have much better words for this. Jerk, A-hole, bas***d, etc.

My retainer is stronger than many players. He brings me back some Garuda Ex sofa every month ! All by himself ! And he will carry the sofa over his back, quite an achievement as he's a lala. <3 retainers

I've been playing MMOs for 12 years now. Those who think they are elite, fail at understanding the social game. I laugh at every wipe and try to help those around me, because playing alongside others is a big part of the fun. If i wanted to maximize my performance or worried that others were dragging down my ability to play the game, then i'd go play one of the other single player Final Fantasy games. Too bad people don't grasp this. Newbies. Hah!
