Well this is sort of wrong information really as i set up with BT last Friday morning and i was being throttled

i am trying spotflux and it seems to be working fine. there is a small amount of lag but not noticeable enough to be annoying.
Hopefully everyone whos now using VPNs wont abandon this problem and let it lay.
no matter what VPN you use you will always add a small amount of latency, the problem does get worse with free ones as the proxy servers can get quite swamped at times, it's why most of the paid ones run load balancing to distribute people equally over a bunch of servers to keep speeds up and latencies down.
im using the free trial of the avast vpn, game runs perfectly
Its nice we have vpns as a temporal solution but this still need's to be addressed. They're not ideal, especially the free ones, you'll have to expect that the connection will drop randomly, or run into other issues. Please square, do something, they're a major UK ISP and that's a -lot- of your customers. As is evident from this thread.
This is pretty much unacceptable, I wasn't affected yesterday, I thought the problem might be fixed, but today it's back¬_¬

Ah, you mean you get the 'world is full' message with absolutely no delay? Excellent.
You have to wait up to working 5 days after joining BT before you won't be throttled and it's only the totally unlimited broadband and totally unlimited infinity packages that are not throttled. If you're paying for the £10 a month broadband or £15 a month BT infinity you will still be throttled, both prices are excluding the £15.45 line rental.
A BT rep also mentioned it on their BT care forums at http://community.bt.com/t5/BT-Infini...BT/td-p/764984
Same here BT infinity 6pm-7pm Lag wall - BT treating the client/game as P2P - sort it out SE or else you will be having alot of unhappy customers.
FF XIV is 100% UNPLAYABLE using BT broadband during the hours of 6pm - 11pm due to stupid P2P throttling!! I have just tested by using a VPN app and it worked every time. But when disabling the VPN the game becomes unplayable due to over 1 min of DELAY on every action.
Will SE contact BT to sort this out?? They are one of the largest ISP in the UK, and this issue will affect ALOT of people!!!
Also many people will be unaware it's the ISP P2P throttling that's to blame, and will instead blame the game and servers for the problem. So it is in SE's best interests to contact BT about this issue before it puts many people off the game!!!!
I just phoned bt and they said they don't have a cap so I have no idea wots goin on ...
Well I have tested it and confirmed that when I use VPN I have no delay and the game works properly, then I test without VPN and the game has over 1 min of delay and is unplayable.
And it only happens during the hours of around 6pm - 11pm
They are even talking about it on the official BT forum (link)
My internet speed is garbage, I don't think even using a VPN will fix this problem for me without having a significant impact on the game too.
try it, it may work, speed isn't that important to online gaming once you pass about half a meg, ping is the important thing and it has no really link to connection speed, the reason the peer to peer throtteling affect people is because your trafic becomes low priority so not only does your speed drops they massively increase your latency giving priority to others.
Just another quick tip i found, from the BT forums, is the glasnost test, it will check to see if your ISP is throttling you.
I have been wondering what was causing this!
Thanks guys for the VPN advice. Hopefully square will sort this out with BT as i dont fancy recontracting with BT for month or 2 yet...
This thread worries me. I'm getting BT Infinity on September 3rd. Will I be affected by the throttling?
No I don't think this will affect you because I hear that BT do not use any P2P throttling on any NEW " totally unlimited " contracts after FEB 2013
Sigh. my router wont let me vpn and i cant get that fixed :(
Anyhow. EE FINALLY acknowledged the problem to me.
And now they want square to talk to them.

Dear,
Thanks for your email.
I'm sorry to learn of the problems that you're experiencing when playing
Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.
Our traffic management policy that your email refers to has been in
place for a number of years as part of our Terms of Use.
Some of our broadband customers use file sharing software and download
large files like music and videos. This uses up lots of network capacity
leaving less available for you. If they're doing this at peak times, it
could mean that the speed of your broadband service will be affected.
This is why we're prioritising the important types of internet traffic
at busy times.
If you live outside of an EE Network area, then this policy has changed
slightly. For these customers we'll also monitor streaming in peak
hours, as well as the use of Peer-to-Peer software. This means that if
your streaming videos or TV programmes in peak hours you'll find it
takes longer to do so.
Typically peak hours for broadband are between 4.30pm to 1am on weekdays
and 1.30pm to 1am on weekends.
Some online games do use Peer-to-Peer software and, as such, this will
come under the rules of your Traffic Management Policy.
In order to find out if Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn operates on
Peer-to-Peer software you'll need to contact the game's administrators.
If is does, then we won't be able to offer any further assistance.
If the game doesn't use Peer-to Peer software, then it's possible that
our administrator's are managing this site in error. If this is the case
we can escalate this matter further for you.
If you've any further queries then please don't hesitate to get in
contact with us again.
Best Regards
Customer Support
Apparently new contracts aren't throttled so you should be fine
as recommended by someone here I went for this VPN since the free one someone posted gave me really high ping. Anyway, I can play again, hurrah! thank's for the recomendation
The problem is for the people who are not on a new contract. They will still be throttled. I think you can re contract and sign up for another 12 months and that should work. You would need to ask for a "totally unlimited" package with NO P2P throttling just to make sure!! I will try this when my current contract is up for renewal.
But in the meantime I wish SE would contact BT directly to try and sort it out for us before we have to start paying.
with sky 4+ years, no such issues
Bumping for the night
Um, what is BT. How does an ISP work that way? wtf
Well between error codes and the inevitable 7pm lag i got about two hours playtime in today out of the maximum 9 hours id set aside. Bumo for the night cos this is getting lost with noobs making the same posts over and over again.
I have also been getting extreme lag making the game unplayable during peak hours. I'm with EE (Orange). At around 12:30 (ten minutes ago) I restarted the client and the lag is gone. If the issue persists tomorrow I'll try a VPN. Are they completely safe to use and legal? Does the VPN provider have the ability to track your data / passwords etc?
Guys, you shouldnt need to use a VPN just to play it, not are SE going to be able to change the way their system works [without patching and changing the infra behind the way it works etc] imo.
Your provider is the one with the traffic shaping here so unless they specificly exempt SE's IP ranges for ARR servers and its services [think firewall ports ranges etc], then nowt is going to happen alas.
Dunno if SE will give you that info to give to BT / EE, but its a bit silly of BT / EE to ask you to get that info as if its not publicly known, then they arent going to give you it.
That said, you could try calling SE's Support Desk [only just noticed this thread so havent read all the pages sorry] and see if they will give you the IP ranges that BT / EE need to exempt / reclassify on their side.
Failing that, contact BT / EE and point out that you're not going to be able to get that and that they should contact SE for this info [if not publicly available].
Sorry if its all been said before, but hope it helps.
Crossing fingers for you all :)
Yeah we just need BT and SE to communicate with each other and sort out this problem. It is not SE to blame here, it's BT's fault. But unless SE contacts them I don't see this getting fixed.
I guess if enough BT customers complain (to BT) something might get sorted...
I can't stress enough how totally UNPLAYABLE the game is during the evenings... I really do not mind a "bit of lag" but this goes WAY beyond that. BT are effectively BLOCKING FFXIV from being played during the evenings!! But they don't tell you this.. they just leave you to wonder why it's unplayable!
Even trying to talk to an NPC freezes your character for over a minute because of the delay communicating with the server!
The moment this started happening we jumped ship, was on BT Infinity 2, it was terrible and they kept overcharging, some months we pay the proper amount and other months we were paying random amounts. We've just signed up with sky broadband! here's to hoping we won't have any problems!
morning bump.
Well I was actually able to play last night using spotflux but there is no way on earth I should have to be resorting to using software like this:/
