Black screen after launching the game

Well, I think that's the case, I updated the game and logged in without closing steam first and I was able to get in with no issue!

Interesting that the patch fixed it for some and not others? Well, for 1 or more, and not for 2 or more... at the very least.

Decided to look around on the forum if people were having the same or a similar issue and found this post. The game has had issues booting up since 6.2 with steam open and after yesterdays patch it wouldn't even boot up past the black screen without steam open.

I tried to reinstall the game yesterday as well and now I can get to the menu but all I get is that the game needs to update (Error 1012) but there is no update. I even checked it with a friends version and they're the same version.

Had a game twice yesterday and didn't get the black screen after about 4 hours of play. Not sure if I got lucky, will post here again if it goes black again like it was.

Still having black screen issue.

this 100% worked i simply deleted the (.dll) and it now launches the game from steam properly! thank you so much i have been dealing with this since 6.2

I just came here to add that I'm now cursed with the black screen. Played normally yesterday, now my game does not go past the "play" green button of the launcher. Read everything from this thread and nothing work, I did not manage to find a way to switch to dx9, so I am not sure if it is that. I hope that after the 14th everything goes back to normal. :(

Oh there is an emergency maintenance today, the 14th. I tried to restore the configurations from my launcher and download all the patches again and it worked. I seriously do not know what triggered that bug, but I hope I do not get stuck in any black screen again. It is so weird, because it behaved exactly like the bug described here: black screen after hitting play in the launcher, no way to close the game without task manager and it came from nowhere. Also, I am a Steam user, so it checked all the boxes. I honestly thought that the issue was with Steam and not in the patches, because I played the game Saturday, when the bug started on Sunday. I really hope someone from SE manages to find out the root of this, because I am now starting to think we might be haunted or something XD

I was involved in the topic directly after the patch. I used up until now the work around with killing the steam.exe process. But the renaming/removing of the steam api file in the game / boot folder, is a better work around.
Since the first day I'm in "contact" with the Square Enix support. I mentioned several times this forum thread in my communication. It seems, that they rely solely on the work of the community. At least they asked me to test the work around with the steam api file in the game / boot folder today.
So I answered, that this works. Let's see, if the topic gets some movement now...

From a friend who had the same issue :
To fix the problem you need to go : Steam -> Settings -> In-Game -> Unlock "Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game".

Thanks for sharing, perhaps this fixes it for some, but it doesn't fix it for me & not for many others, appreciate you dropping a comment nonetheless :)

Unfortunately neither of the aforementioned fixes helped in my case. Issues still persists. And on different PC machines with updated drivers, etc. As a matter of fact I had steam overlay disabled on every machine for FFXIV but enabling it didn't do a thing. Deleting Steam API files also didn't work.
