Telling people not to be upset when plans fall through is telling people how to feel. Everyones knows that plans can fall through. For any kind of vacation/time off: going to the beach, going to another country, going to a sports game, a concert, etc.. That doesn’t mean that they can’t be upset when a wrench is thrown into their plans.

For some, yes. Some jobs have a hard cutoff for time off requests of two weeks. My job is like that. So it would have helped me a lot more if they had told me a week sooner, actually. And I’m just one example. I’m just hopeful that my boss will be accommodating since I’ve been working so much OT lately to ensure my accounts are all in line. And helping others with their stuff.

No one is saying you don't have the right to be upset. But if you are going to be illogical while doing so, then be prepared to be called out. Something happen and it cause the game to be delayed. It was obviously not an easy decision yet we have people here going as if that was the case. I would rather have the game delayed even at the last minute if it means a better chance of the launch being smooth. The man and his team is exhausted and they are working their a** off for our sake and people want to behave like this? Seriously? Telling people not to be upset when plans fall through is telling people how to feel. Everyones knows that plans can fall through. For any kind of vacation/time off: going to the beach, going to another country, going to a sports game, a concert, etc.. Mate. I am just explaining how they wouldn't be so disappointed, had they considered things. If that's talking down to people. Then damn the world must be a harsh place for some. If I took time off for a game.. and it got my plans all ruined, am i really allowed to be mad at the developers? We are not far off from having people in these threads bullying the developers, to the point they CUT communication completely between the devs and the players. We are one bad incident from a developer getting death threats, them cutting communication off from the playerbase.. and then there is none. Then the game falls into chaos.

The only kind of “blame” or “fault” I’ve really seen in this thread is mostly what you voiced: people just wish the development team had given a better heads up about this. But I don’t recall seeing anyone attacking the development team personally in here. I’ve read the entire thread thus far, but maybe I missed some posts in the midst of replying.

This logic can be used against you as well: if you have a problem with people venting on a public forum (especially THIS forum, which is known for venting—heck, one of the largest threads on here is a Duty Finder venting thread), then don’t come to a public forum. You aren’t the Internet Police, and you can’t tell people not to vent online.

Besides, forums exist for discussion and feedback. Hopefully this thread can be used as something constructive for SE in the future when it comes to announcing delays—ideally to not do it so close to release.

So SE use the devs to create a PR machine. They place them all front and centre and use that good will to buy them some wiggle room for problems. What do you think would happen? Honestly. I wouldn't be surprised if people are already emailing them. Outside of the forums. They do exist. They do post on twitter. It's alright to be upset your plans get ruined. But SE knew about it a week ago. Thats 3 weeks at best. IDK if people would've been able to get their PTO changed.. its unfortunate but its life. Plus they were probably also trying to see if they needed to delay it before announcing.

Lots of people make the mistake of making an assumption about a company of industry as a whole based on only the things they've seen, and the same is true when you compare companies within the same industry, or try to apply the perspective of one industry to another one that's pretty similar

Delays happen, you don't know why they're happening, they can give you a reason that it's happening that's dumbed down in a way that you can understand, but it doesn't mean that you'll understand all the nuances unless you're either in said company dealing with the issue or in the same industry dealing with a very similar issue.

They have to delay it a couple weeks, that's fine, give them the time they need to fix their issues because they sure as heck don't enjoy telling you that the release date that's been anticipated for months is actually not a viable day for them and now everyone has to change their plans on short notice

A serious question, who do I go "Blame" when you know there is a delay in the release date of a game and you don't let your players know until a week after it was made official, and that is if we are to take everything said as the truth. Yet still market to them, that same week, in the Mogstation that time is short and the release isn't delayed and we are offering 50% off of Adventure Jump Sale to get you game ready for Endwalker? I'm like 90% sure I wouldn't have purchased the two job jump, if I had know I had two extra weeks before the new expansion. How do you become empathic to something so insidious. Makes me feel like I'm playing WOW or better yet MTGO.

Oh piss off. I work in Healthcare on this planet in this time period. I'm not going to feel sorry for game developers not delivering on their promises. Is it the end of the world my vacation is ruined? No. But I needed to get away. Now instead of feeling like I'm getting away when the game launches, it'll feel more like I'm working there. My post was talking about on the forums. Not the other platforms.

And maybe they would have been. Maybe they wouldn’t have been. Three weeks is a lot easier for departments to work with than two. At least in all the jobs I’ve had in the past, it usually is. Personally, the server instability issues have been present for weeks now—so on that point, I fail to see how they could have only decided this would be a problem last Friday. I know that’s not all of why they chose to delay—but lore touch-ups and nitpicks are also time management issues. Hopefully, going forward, they can figure out more efficient ways to manage that time and when to schedule QA testing. And this isn’t a dig at them—it’s meant to be constructive. Not an attack, before anyone starts coming at me with that.

Although i do think it is good to learn from previous failures and delay if you need to delay, can’t lie… I’m big irritated by it. I’m a nurse, and we are always short staffed, so it’s not like i can just switch the days. Need at least two months in advance to get any time off. I took off because working 12 hour overnight shifts doesn’t really allow you to play on days you have to work. And to add salt to the wound, i return to work dec2, and work the next six days. I want the launch to be a success, but man I’m irked :(

Well, it's probably too close to change my week vacation now, hopefully I'll be able to take the 2nd (I work overnights) off so I can have December 3-5th and just play hard during the weekend.

They could of taken every team member and work on it instead of developing the dumb seasonal events that are a repeat every year. At least it could be done. Makes you wonder what was being done

It's unfortunate, but deadlines are also hard to estimate. For those who know the software development world, unforseen things simply happen. This is the world of software development and delays will happen, especially with current events. And I can tell you from experience how emotionally distressing it is when we can't deliver on time. To some it can be debilitating or even humiliating. Please remember these are humans, too, who have probably had their adjust their personal life plans at some point to deliver to you an amazing product that you greatly enjoy.

a better heads up would be ideal, problem is, bugs dont tend to notify you in advance that they will be found or respect time management plans. also, it could appear minor of the surface, then when looked into, touch more aspects of the software than originally thought. sure, it may not have been game but maybe server code, who knows, we arent at those meetings. a month would have been nice warning time, but thats not always possible. unless they release meeting notes or recordings it is hard to say exactly why they were forced to delay, but I doubt it was an easy decision.

I agree its normal to be upset, even be upset when vacation plans change, but it happens, sorry it does, but it does. sorry it didnt work out how we wanted or planned but life is unpredictable that way.

yeah i don't think ill change my time off
it still gives me 2 weeks with the game just sad ive been so excited for endwalker i basically have 5 work days left but these pass few months have been really rough and stressful to me feel like someone with greater power is testing my patients before EW release

Yep. It's not something that they wanted to do. This was probably a worst case scenario. They, Yoshi P specifically it would appear, felt obligated to do so.

A damn shame about the delay but I mean, I'd rather have a game that's tested and ironed out as best as possible than a flaming pile of "oops" and then it's Rabahn EX all over again. For me it just makes me more confident in Yoshi P's decision and the dev team.

It also is unfortunate that people who scheduled the time off to get in are upset - and I get it. In the development world of games and tech nothing EVER goes according to plan. I feel bad and hopefully y'all will be able to work around it.

Just gonna go out on a limb here slugger and just assume you've never worked in the gaming development industry.

It's their responsibility to release a game. Period. It's also their responsibility to ensure that it's released with minimal issues. Game delays happen to many companies often. Especially during a time where there's a pandemic on a global scale. Timelines always aren't bulletproof even in the early days of games before DLC and Expansions. There's no golden rule or any rule that states they "ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO DO THE THING ON TIME!" to summarize what you've said, with caplocks on.

For the ones who are doom and gloom and saying "This is the last straw! How dare you?!" or feeled they are owed something by the dev team or comments to that in nature - there's an unsubscribe button. Do feel free to use it at your leisure. I'm above the negative entitled nonsense and people like you will not be missed honestly. Make some room on the bandwidth for the rest of us who want to keep the ping low.

I'm fortunate in that this does kind of work out for me. I've been wanting to get work done on my job, and there's just no way that was gunna happen, but now I have two weeks to get work done so... sure? Eh. I can feel for everyone who actually has to keep a strict schedule though. I'm just also glad to know Yoshi-P and company CAN do this if they need to. I mean, SE used to be notorious for rushing things...

Forums exists for feedback and this isn't feedback. You were informed of the reason for the delay, you don't have to like it but it is what it is. There's nothing for them to learn from your whining, they already know people made plans and took off work.

Who do you get mad at when a company fails to deliver a product to you? I don’t think it’s realistic to get mad at yourself for something like that—vacation time being a factor or not. Someone is going to be the source of a person’s ire/upset/disappointment. And that’s fine—as long as they are being reasonable about it. I don’t see many in this thread being unreasonable when they post about why they are upset about this. Most are fairly calm; and most are just upset that the delay was announced so late.

I have to agree that yes, perhaps it could have been worded better. If we want to just chalk this up to a semantics argument, then fine. But your words were “just don’t be upset”. That’s still telling someone how to feel. Even with the addendum of “if things don’t go as planned”/your quip about “if people had considered things”. It is extremely easy for such a phrase to come off as condescending. There’s no real way to excuse that.

However, there has never been a precedent set in this game for delays when a hard date for a release has been set. EW’s delay seems especially harsh because we already know content was cut out of late ShB to make sure that development time could be fully dedicated to EW-related preparation and activities. And there was no talk about the mere possibility of there being further delays than what we already had (since expansions have been routinely released in late June/early July, and the developers were transparent that COVID cost them about two months of development time).

No. No one needs to tell anyone how to utilize their time off. That’s not anyone’s business but the person using the PTO. Not mine. Not yours. Not Yoshida’s or SE’s. Just their’s. There is no reason to tell anyone how to spend their time. With regards to anything, really. Not just vacation time.

Bullying? Death threats? No one is bullying the development team here. Criticizing them is not bullying. And death threats? As crazy as these forums get, most here would agree that sending death threats to a developer is uncalled for, and would rightfully shame the sender for it. This wasn’t about bugs, though—it was announced WHY the game was delayed, and it had nothing to do with programming bugs. Yoshida said that they wanted to fine-tune the lore. And then there was the server stability issues that came up during QA—and those have been known about for weeks.

This thread is feedback. If they took the time to read comments about how people wished they had more time to rearrange schedules, they can use that for future announcements should this happen again. The needless white-knighting is all irrelevant, though.

Yeah, sorry, but that's not how it works in general. You don't notice 2 weeks earlier that you won't be making a deadline unless

a) you procastrinated and started working on said project 2 weeks before the deadline (which we know was not the case here)
b) an unexpected major incident happened (doesn't sound like it)

What this sounds like is devs knowing they needed extra time but superiors/execs telling them to crunch it till it eventually became apparent to them that that was not gonna happen, hence the 2 weeks notice.

Personally I kinda hope they throw in some sort of bonus item for people who've pre-ordered Endwalker, not thinking of anything extravagant like a new mount but it would be a nice gesture to all the people whose plans have been delayed by the release date change

As I've been playing MMOs for many many years I more or less expect delays for any major content updates, be it release delays or maintenance delays.
So I know there's always a risk when taking time off work for a release as it could just get pushed back.

However, maybe developers should add some form of fineprint when announcing release dates, something like: "Date may change due to unforseen reasons"
I understand that it's not something people want to see when a release is announced.
But perhaps it's needed.

It'd be cool but the last thing I'd ask is for them to throw in something new. Maybe like... later on down the road when things are stable, on track and that pesky pandemic isn't taking a toll on everything, yeah maybe a nice "thank you!" event or something.

Personally I'd love my Flight Unit mount sooner. But I won't push my luck XD

Where are your sources? Do you work for SE? Do you know people on the inside who can update you on what's happening? Do you know what's yet to be implemented that's preventing an on-time launch?

I wonder how hard it would be to add every old Moogle item to the moogle event. But they probably don't have the time for that now. It would fill out 2 weeks for some people.

This is what y'all are defending. Man was literally nitpicking the entire development and caused this. There aren't any game-breaking bugs (that they haven't discovered yet seeing as how they had to put off their last QA process lmao), just a whole lot of nitpicking over fine details. In other words, an extremely poor management decision.

I never thought wanting to increase the quality of a product as much as possible would be something complaint about. Especially if it is the ending to a major story that has been ongoing for over a decade. This is an interesting discovery.

I work deploying cloud builds for a large telecom in the US. We FREQUENTLY have builds get delayed due to issues, most of them hardware related. FedEx delays, Vendor delays, and thus, deadlines slip, impacting customer deployment dates. Some of these dates slip the day of. Maybe this is why I'm so numb to this, as its literally my job dealing with it.

Chasing perfection when you have a perfectly good product already is asinine, yes. I've never rolled my eyes harder at this game's devs than when I heard on stream about how yoshi caused this delay by "looking for things that only he would notice".

Actually, we do know what caused the delay. They posted about it on the Lodestone and talked about it at the start of the PLL.

I applaud the transparency. But I’m still within my right to criticize.
