Going on 2 hours of radio silence after logging in to find my character in GM jail

Just modify Stone, Sky, Sea a way to measure DPS output like a parser would.

Solves the problem of people not having a legit way to parse but also solves SE's fear of it being used to bully people in parties cause you have to actually go out of your way and on your lonesome to participate in it.

That doesn’t really solve the issue because now you’re seeing a number with zero consideration for party buffs. For a job like BRD or MCH that are reliant on other job(s) for a portion of their damage, this is an inaccurate representation of what you’re capable of/the damage you’d actually be doing in a Savage fight.

I agree it is a band-aid but anyone can perform the perfect rotation with zero pressure. However when you have to dodge, do mechanics, change targets, switch to AOE, manage your buffs/potions. Most will start to slip and this is why so many people like the parsers because it lets them know they are staying on top of it all and performing the best they can.

Except it is enforceable as the case in point has proven. Secondly there literally is nothing a parser does that Picks up slack. It's a simple packet scan that produces a number layout so you can read everyone's numbers, not something you actively need to be able to play, nothing it does cant really be figured out by your own brain, as to your improvement or lack thereof.

1. Memorise the fight once you do that you know when you're going to have to move with relative ease this ensures you aren't examining floor particles. Hey look at that DPS picked up right there, no death, proper movement DPS gain.
2. Know your rotation. Once you got your rotation understood you'll be able to maintain for those times when you have to move. Once more DPS Increases.
3. Constantly Optimise. Streamline your movements tighten them so you're only needing to do a minimum of movement before you can get back to dealing damage keep your gear melded even if you're planning to replace it asap eat the proper food, have the proper potion going.etc.etc.

Constant practice and due diligence. a parser is just going to give you data but it's not going to improve your ability.

Wait it tells you what mechanics are coming up before they happen? Like I get joining voice chat where a player helps with callouts but having software that does it seems to start to boarder on cheating since it gives an advantage over people who don't use third party software or people on PS4.

Long ago I was driving down a residential street. I was last in line of about 3 cars making their way down, and we were all going about 40 MPH in a 35 zone. Guess what happened? Motorcycle cop was behind a bend, and he pulled me over as the 3 of us drove by.

I told him that I had just been going with the flow, but I still got the ticket anyway. Was I annoyed? Yes. Do I still remember it 15+ years later? Yes. lol. We were all breaking the speed limit, so it was well within the cop's position to give me a ticket.

There are rules stated that we all signed off on to play XIV. SE isn't going to be able to catch every last person who uses a parser, and perhaps they don't care to, but if you bring attention to yourself and end up getting a report? Well, that's on you. Just have to suck up whatever punishment you get. Doesn't matter if everyone else is doing it without getting caught. It's still a third-party tool, and still against the ToS.

This is false.

As an example, a couple of times people have asked me for help. I checked fflogs (no I don't upload anything there, that'd be naughty) and someone else had posted a few logs including them. With that data I could pick out every single flaw in their rotation and give them a fully detailed explanation of how to improve. In some cases they'd been playing like that for months, read guides, beaten SSS and would never had been given any indication they were doing it wrong or why.

This actually applies to me too. I used to think I was a good Samurai, read the guides, beat SSS, practised a ton. Then one day I got curious to see if anyone ever logged me, looked at fflogs and learned I was grey parsing Seiryu. I was shocked, but it gave me a real push to analyse indepth, neglect important details far less, push more uptime and eventually I pushed my performance by a good 20-30%.

In WoW where parsing is legal, Skada was by far my most valuable tool for raid leading because it let me see everything. I could see who was missing what mechanic, what needed focus, where mistakes were happening, adapt new strategies and guide my group towards beating the encounter. It was amazing. I truly miss that.

On the other hand, the SSS Dummy also have specific hit points to take into account that you're alone. The "actual damage" shouldn't matter as long as you're doing "enough" damage. The problem is the mentality that pushes acceptable damage far above what the game actually requires.

I really wish SE could be more progressive about third party programs/add-ons and permit ones that are not actually providing an unfair advantage to players.

I don't think they have the staff to be monitoring said programs to make sure people aren't pushing things too far, though, considering that they can't even keep the programs that are blatantly cheating under control.

From some of the comments in this thread, I'd beg to differ on the "not providing an unfair advantage". Being able to show moves before they happen is quite the advantage. Do I personally care? No. But evidently it's not quite as innocent as people are saying.

I was unaware that ACT could even do that.
I don't believe parsers are cheating, as long as it's just showing you the numbers.
However, I would consider that cheating.

It's basically the DBM of FF XIV. DBM does the same thing in WoW but they allow addons by default and even design a lot of boss fights around it (DBM). But they are not allowed here according the ToS so...while I wouldn't consider it cheating, I would definitely consider it as a breach of the ToS.

Personally speaking, my belief is that if something gives you an unfair advantage - it becomes cheating.
Parsers gives you raw data of your numbers, and you can use that to better yourself - but you would be the one bettering yourself. Call outs give you a an advantage in the sense that you will never have to truly react to anything, or learn the mechanics. However, to be fair at the end of the day I'm not going to get bent out of shape about it because FFXIV (outside of the PvP) is a co-op game, and it doesn't exactly effect me. I can understand where people are coming from when they say they don't consider it cheating.

Is it really doing that, though?

There are a lot of abilities that while lacking cast bars will still notify of when their invisible cast time begins in the combat log, which I assume is what ACT is looking at.

Ozma's form shifts are probably the best example of this as you get a message of it starting a shift a few seconds before it visibly triggers.


What's not okay are things like the hunt sniffers that are digging data out of the client that gives you a direct advantage over other players on top of not being visible through any in-game methods.

A lot of boss mechanics are scripted to occur at a certain time after the encounter starts, so having predictive callouts from ACT wouldnt be unheard of. Beyond that, ACT is supposed to pull info from the combat log.

For someone who actually wants to know their performance in a Savage setting, a dummy showing that they do "enough" damage is not satisfactory. That being said, it's easy to parse well on a dummy where you stand still for 3 minutes versus a fight where you have to perform a rotation while also being mindful of the mechanical dance. And, again, it doesn't take into consideration things like party buffs. So the number is inaccurate.

SSS is not a satisfactory measurement of your performance.

Yet, it is a good gauge of knowing your rotations. Something that is sorely needed these days. Sure, it may not be able to show how you perform in content with group buffs, but if you can't do your rotation on a dummy, you sure as heck can't do it while mechanics are happening, and no amount of party buffs will help you then.

It also helps that if you can practice your rotation on a dummy, it then becomes muscle memory, which makes it easier to do while doing mechanics. You stop having to think about what the next step you have to do while playing your job, and can concentrate more on the fight.

Playing devils advocate here... but in regards to FFXIV this is actually a player imposed term of acceptability. SSS is the marker to whether you are capable of outputting the required dps.

Personally I don’t care whether someone parses or not assuming it’s for their own info or a static where everyone is working to better themselves, but in a pug that info is often used to insult not teach so I dislike them then. I do care about mods/Addons/programs that tell to react. Those are bogus and a crutch imo. Ultimately, whether you like to parse or not is irrelevant. Meanwhile, a log that has a cast-by-cast of what you're doing can be given to someone who knows a role well, and they can pin-point exactly what you're doing wrong.

I've been in one Savage PUG group where people insult others about their numbers (correction from "never" - there was an A10S group I joined back in Creator that had someone being salty about it...and the group kicked him for it). Most groups I'm in, even when there's clearly a member underperforming that one would a parse could see, people generally don't say anything. But we're discussing anecdotes here, not facts.

For anyone who wants a clear picture of their performance, SSS is not satisfactory.

Except, as has been stated, parsing is technically against the ToS, so you would have to look outside the game for help anyway, in that regard, and ps4 players would especially need help there. Someone who fails the test could also look up guides or talk to friends, without even needing a log.

A log may tell you the fine details, and if someone made small mistakes, sure. You don't need a log to help someone who is doing something fundamentally wrong, like not applying dots, keeping buffs up, or using completely incorrect skills, like thunder 4 on single target, or spamming blizzard.

Again that is player imposed and not what SE has deemed necessary hence why we have SSS and not permission to use parses. Ultimately it is their game and we deal or we don’t. I do agree that SSS is not adequate to display if you can meet the requirements if you are moving dodging etc and if you are trying to push your limits, but that is not the bar that the devs have set.

You have to do this for standard rotations/optimized openers anyways. This game doesn't tell you anything to help you formulate optimized openers - it's honestly severely lacking in internal resources for improving performances; SSS included in this.

I don't know of any game that tells you how to optomize openers and rotations, xiv is not alone in this regard. To expect this seems rather silly imo.

The game provides enough information from tool tips to be able to put together at least some semblance of a rotation, and you can formulate an opener based on those tool tips as well.

I mean, I've never looked up a Bard guide, hadn't played it since I got it to 70 after stormblood, and you can look me up. None of the jobs except mch and smn really need guides on rotations and openers. The only thing Sam benefits from is CD alignment depending on skill speed, so in that regard sure.

Part of the problem is people just don't even try. How else do you get level 70 players in o10n who run away with stack markers multiple times.

I don't even play it much anymore lol. I stopped for the most part after sigma scape savage. So my gear doesn't line with with proper stats. I know the openers, and my rotation, because when I was playing I did look it up to optimize for savage. (I never said people shouldn't try to optimize for savage btw, just that SSS iis a fairly good indicator of knowing your job for the average player. Not those pushing savage clears, tho I wouldn't be surprised if even some of the savage players I've been in pugs with couldn't clear the dummies...)

I honestly don't spam fights as much as I did a few months ago, so I don't have the fights down, which is what's hurting me more than anything. I have only 2 suzaku ex clears, and maybe 17-20 on seiryu.


Plus I'm half out of love for the job at the moment. Waiting for the battle changes in the live letter before deciding what job to play in the next expansion.

But if you want to perform well; then yeah - you need to sit down and do the number crunching and battle theory crafting to even begin to start thinking about doing savage, or any content where you won't be kicked for being dead weight.

That's why I'm like 'wot' - there's a reason most of the top performers in the game are in certain discord where guides and information is shared. That's how the majority gets good. There will always be an outliner, but come on - you can't expect the average casual player to pick up a class, do all the number crunching and the likes themselves in any MMO. And think that they can achieve hard/savage - Ultimate content, without the aid of a guide. You might be able to get away with it in extremes as you can be carried without knowing a full rotation - until someone kicks you for low dps, but still.

Yeah, but most people can't even figure out that the forums exist. You expect them to read rotation guides? How many times do we get posts asking why they can't log in during maintenance times we had a week's notice on.

Most players in this game simply don't care about putting up good numbers, they play for the story and to hang out with friends.

And if they want to go further they can start looking up guides. But they have to want to to do so. Or just make story content harder so they need to get better, but every times that's happened, it's just backlash instead of getting good.

Aye, will agree with you there. People were already complaining about story content being too difficult in recent patches. Says it all, people need to actually put the effort in.

The easiest way to increase player quality is to simplify the rotations, especially by reducing the number of skills. Unfortunately, that also makes them rather boring to play imo.

Parsing in this game is like swimming in the ocean with sharks; they're literally always there but attacks are still rare enough to make the news.

If the OP used a parser to insult someone I would be right there with everyone calling for them to be banned... but they didn't so, like most of the discussions going on here, it's pointless.



"Hypothetically speaking" the sad part is you're actually a good SAM for the content that you're doing and if you looked into the class a bit more you'd be doing even better.

First everyone’s experience is different. So what you and I have witnessed is not the same and opinions are formed on your gaming history not just one game. Which is why it is all anecdotal unless proof is provided. However, I have witnessed this behavior on more than one occasion. Not all pugs do it, but in my experience in a pug when a parser is cited this is the behavior.

Second I was not saying that the OP did insult anyone or That anyone in his party did so. It was my personal opinion on when parsing goes wrong. You’ll even see if you reread my post I am not against parsing as the whole. However, I also will not feel sorry for anyone if they chose to parse in FFXIV and get a suspension or ban. You know it is against the tos and need to accept the ramifications. However, the OP’s experience of waiting for hours is excessive and needs to be looked at.
