You can't "lock" something that doesn't exist.

As others have mentioned its not so simple to just add the other genders when as is the headgear can't be displayed on what we will be getting soon, not to mention to make sure the new models wont bug out in cut-scenes.

I know sims modding was mentioned but I also feel like adding FFXI .dat modding as well (As its client side and gives 0 advantage over other players, it was allowed in FFXI) If someone wanted to port a female elvaan outfit to a female hume or mithra the modder would have to re configure the entire outfit so that it fits with the other races skeleton and sometimes it can't be done cause of how complex the differences can get where the game can crash when you change gear in game.

Just wait and see, let them smooth things over first, so the male and female of the new races can be added with minimal to no issue. Plus you know it's not FREE for them to put the character models together.

Thing is, SE has asked the playerbase to make their voices heard and provide feedback so they can take it into consideration, not to "just wait and see".
I get it, some people are very loud and obnoxious (and that applies to both sides really), but ultimately all people are doing is what SE told them to do. And for what we know, if we don't speak up now, they are never going to add either missing gender option.
So let people speak up, they have a right to do at least that.

That's perfectly fine if people want to post letting Yoshida know they want the other genders.

But the vast majority of posts haven't been just that. They come riddled with thinly-veiled insults and threats. So you can't really expect people to just sit by and let the vitriol spill.

The "vast majority" of posts (past the initial outrage ofc) have been fairly civil.
And ironically I find it to be the the ones speaking out against mViera/fHrothgar to be much more vitriolic, those are usually the ones not even trying to "veil" their insults, they just go ahead and call everyone perverted and creepy, so maybe its those guys who should stop.

I don't find that to be the case. I find many on the other side to be very intolerant of those with differing opinions. And there is certainly nothing wrong with asking for the other genders. That is what feedback is for and ultimately the developers and director will decide if they will be coming or not.

Obviously both sides have their bad apples, I just don't agree that somehow a "vast majority" on the pro-mViera/fHrothgar side are vitriolic. I've been lurking in these threads every day, the majority is usually just speculating and casually adding their support, mostly glossing over it whenever someone offers a different opinion; its usually only whenever someone pops in to call everyone "creppy" or "perverted" or "entitled" when people get understandably defensive.
Maybe, just maybe, this discussion would actually be civil if both sides tried to act like it. But don't put all the blame on one side if both sides behave equally bad.

Oh please those responses are far from common. Most responses I've seen are simply explanations of why both genders weren't added for both races and the reasoning behind why the developers felt they should add the two they did. Most responses that have been negative in my view have been in response to attacks from the other side for not going with the flow or simply tying to explain why they weren't added.

Come on Lacan be real... and it's getting to be pretty transparent which camp you are in.

And now you've brought the argument full circle. Just as I mentioned that you can't expect people who agree with SE to sit by while they insult and threat, you're saying that you can't expect supporters to sit by when others say "too bad so sad" (or the equivalent). So it's just a vicious circle.

But I would argue that the worst of the vitriol is coming from supporters. Yes, there are bad apples on both sides, but there's a disproportionate amount of insults and threats, I would say. That's not to say I condone it, but I don't think the amount of vitriol is even on both sides.

The initial reaction was extreme, I'll admit, but as more information came out things have calmed down considerably.
I'm putting more blame on the pro-genderlock (I'm just gonna use that word cause screw semantics) side because they haven't. They are often still as openly aggressive and offensive towards people merely discussing/adding their support/sharing fanart as day one.

Again, both sides aren't perfect, but perhaps its now time for the pro-genderlock side to mellow out as well and accept that that the pro-mViera/fHrothgar side has just as much a right to ask as they have a right to disagree.

Just about everyone who decided to be vocal about disagreeing with MVeira, and to a vastly lesser extent FHrothgar(since we knew 0% about them prior to the site update just this morning) was both Lore, which explained why they were never seen at all by anyone ever outside a select few, and the technical, financial and time related issues with making a whole new model within three-five months of the SHB launch.

The Lore argument, which is still a valid argument since Yoshi can stand by that as a reason why neither alternate gender are in game, was dismissed as "lore doesn't count, they could rewrite it if they wanted to."

And for the actual reason we aren't getting them, the technical, financial and resource related reasons, people clearly showed they don't know how companies and much less game development works as they ignorantly suggest they "just hire more people, or just get more funding or, I don't know magically make this idiotic demand happen in less time it takes to write an term paper."

Seriously, the Pro "unlock" side, despite being far more civil then their roots (the idiots who basically tried to blackmail SE with their character accounts.) are still the toxic side of the debate since we have clear evidence in the MVeira thread of them blatantly dogpiling people.

That's only the case with the male au ra. Only two of the female faces could be described as truly fierce, and that's if you choose the right versions of the eyes. The other two look pretty calm and are basically impossible to make fierce. Unless you start spamming facial emotes.

And there seems to be a third side that gets thrown to the anti-mViera/fHrothgar side by the pro side. And that's the side that (wants/don't mind) them if it's not at the cost of basic content that we get each expansion/patch. I am one of them and so is OP from what they wrote in their post and so many others out there. And of course you can look at how many were insulting OP here for not jumping on the bandwagon, even though they explicitly stated they want the other genders to be added but to give the devs enough time for that.

Locking things that don't exist is possible and does happen. First example pops to mind is Overwatch's Twitch has "locked" emotes that haven't even been revealed (or probably even created) yet as rewards. To debate the terminology, logistics, and ethics of it is just a derailing tactic to try and squash the interest a lot of players have in playing male viera and female hrothgar.

Ultimately it boils down to SE looking at the feedback from players and determining if the interest matches the development time it will take to fulfill the request, as with anything else.

I called you out for declaring your opinions as facts. That had nothing to do with being a catgirl. I think that the devs are not going to stall out primary content for developing the off race genders. If it is going to happen, itll likely happen slowly by the next xpac. The only way I would see them sidelining primary content is if the bean counters and marketers figure that introducing them will net them way more profit. It is unlikely theyll rush it for any other reason. I think the people in the middle on both sides accept this as being the case.

Whatever way anyone tries to spin it, it doesn't change that there is something standard (being able to play both genders of a race) that players want but cannot have, and it's causing controversy. And that's the actual issue. Not the semantics over what can be argued as lock and so on.

If SE do a good job on the in-game portrayal of viera and hrothgar, from a cosmetic and lore point of view, it will only increase the demand for the missing genders. Especially with viera. Long time fans of the Final Fantasy series have been curious about them for a super long time. Easily over a decade in some cases.

You know it's one thing that the reward hasn't been revealed yet, which means it existed. But saying it was not even created, that's where it starts to sound off. So they locked players from accessing a file that isn't in the game yet? Furthermore, if you're going to say "they planned that but didn't implement it" that's another thing, since you already knew they planned it. But you can't say you're locked from a non existent thing that you had no idea it was even planned.

Let me give you a better example of how you can get locked from something. The Regalia mount. People already data-mined it (even how to obtain it) and there are even videos on how it looks like when you're using it and flying with it. But we're locked from using it. (There's another example regarding schoolboy and schoolgirl but I'll not spoil it).

Here we go again. Assuming that the intent of this entire thread is to try and squash the interest of players for something they wanted, even though there is no mention of such thing in the OP regarding that. For the xpac launch, yeah. Thats pretty much it. Unless they OT everyone involved, theyre not going to push out the other genders before launch. Given production time, theyre probably wrapping up teh xpac and shifting to 5.1 content among other things.

It's likely that at this time, theyre gauging the player base demand vs costs to add them. If the marketing and bean counters come to the conclusion that it would generate them a pretty decent RoI, we will get it. The bigger the RoI, the sooner we would probably get it (within reason). If the trend for the xpacs is slow down and burnout mid way through, having the off gender's introduced then would help negate that effect. Or they could wai ttill the next xpac as an additional selling point since new races in general are off the table. From my initial impressions, given the hard response from the player base, there is a fairly good chance we will get them, though I would hazard we wont see it any sooner than 5.3 or 5.4.

So you really made a post to argue about the term gender locking which is the agreed upon term in the video game community for decisions to lock races or classes to one gender or the other? You might as well try to argue with a dictionary. Also the gear argument is invalid, since the only gear they actually have to change is the helmets. The bodies for viera and hrothgar use hyur and roe rigging. The way gear works is that midlander, elezan, miqo'te, and au ra all share the same skeletal rigging meaning gear is scaled up or down for them but it uses the same gear. Roes, highlanders and lalafells all have unique skeletons so gear for them is just for them. The slides very carefully stated that the unique thing about each race is the head. This is because viera will use the hyur gear, none of it has to be changed for them, Hrothgar will use the roe gear, none of it will have to be changed, even adding a slouch is already in the game which can be viewed in several emotes. So, they would not be making a new model at all, just a new head, same as they already did for both "new" races. So they literally can slap a boobs on a hrothgar and call it female since that body already exists as the female roe.

Jeez guys, this isn't that hard.

Genderlock simply means "you can't do X thing in our video game unless you play as Y gender"
In this case, X thing is "play Viera race"

For some reason, some people seem to think this is something that only applies to playing certain character classes, even though the term "genderlock" doesn't necessarily allude to that at all and there is more to what certain players might want to play as aside from character classes

Did you read any of the statements made by others on here or did you simply read the title and reply?

The stance against how the term "genderlock" is being used in regards to this situation is that the option for male Viera isn't provided so you aren't "locked" from playing them, they're simply not there. If they had displayed both genders and only let you play as females THEN you'd be genderlocked from them.

could you imagine if male viera were fully implemented and we just werent allowed to play them
