Friend of mine that plays lives in St. Thomas. Winds there were 185mph. Category 5 is above 157mph. I know him from the game (FFXI originally). I haven't heard from him since and he hasn't logged in, answered e-mails, texts, facebook messages, nothing. Last I have from him is a text saying they were charging $3,000 USD for flights out of St. Thomas. I have no idea if him and his family are even ok at this point. If he is ok, I can't even begin to imagine what he's going through. They have no date/time on when power will be restored to the ENTIRE ISLAND let alone any rebuilding that needs to take place. He has a house in Goblet. I'm sure he hasn't even thought about it at this point if he's ok. If he does get back on his feet and is able to log in, I'm sure he would be happy and thankful that SE thought of him (and others) in this time of crisis....

Sorry to hear about your legs, hope all good now. When I was unable to log in temporarily due to my pc needing new hardware, I had my sister log on from her pc to avoid any interruptions. Shame you didn't have family to do that for you also.

But it doesn't solve banned or players who quit who still would hold their houses which wouldn't help the situation at all, which is one of the reasons auto demolish was added.

I'm sitting here over an hour away from my home because I'm on day 5 of not having power. I'm one of the lucky ones - I had family that lived close enough I could go to their home and crash since they still had power and therefore AC. So many of my colleagues, friends, and neighbors are trapped in their homes and have no where else to go. Hotels with AC have no vacancy. You know what you need during the day when everything feels miserable? Some sort of mental escape.

It took me 2 days to get to come here because all the roads up were either flooded, no lights, or had debris on them. I was under curfew as well - too dangeous for non-essential needs people to be out. I live in Orlando. After the first day of the storm, it was hot, humid, and I had a ton of damage to clean. So did everyone around me. McDonald's had a 3 hour wait for food because they were the only ones open and able to sell hot food - and even that took 2 days. It is in the 90s - and there is no relief in sight - as so many of us still don't have power. You can't exactly go out and do anything to take your mind off the heat and lack of agency to do anything about it. Stores, even major retailers, are closed. They don't have power either. Its too hot out to do much work outside. When you get home there is no relief of sweet AC. You know what there is a ton of time to do? Day dream to take your mind off the misery. You can only fixate on the damage, hope of the power company fixing things, scavenging for ice to keep all your food from rotting away in the fridge, trying to just cool down and not lose hope. Yeah, some people are living in terrible situations - thinking of video games, since you can't exactly play them - gives a bit of relief. You don't know what it is like. Stop judging people for trying to take their minds off of being miserable just 'cause you think our thoughts should be fixated on the misery a natural disaster brings 24-7. Our brains need a break from it! Yeah, thinking about something we love that is a major form of entertainment and stress relief we're currently being denied - is vital. When you start looking at bucket trucks with linemen on them like you are 8 years old hearing the ice cream truck, it SUCKS.

If I had to quit for x months, maybe the house should be archived until I get back, which upon then it goes in a queue and gets auto placed somewhere at the next available opening. That way I can have my house and not loose all that progress on a house if I had a lack of funds or something.

Thank you Yoshi P. As someone effected by Hurricane Irma this warms my heart. I was lucky enough to only be without for 5 days but there are meany that are looking at weeks if not months before normalcy could possibly be restored.

All these silly replies saying that limited housing that not every player has access to, and is locked behind a subscription to maintain is a great feature. What a wonderful community.

Although the gesture is very kind from the dev team, I think this is a band-aid fix for a real issue. The housing timer is just too short - so many things can keep someone away for a single month. An illness, a life event, a disaster. What we need is for the timer to be extended to 3 months. This is the chunk of time many people buy their subs in anyhow and I honestly think it's a much more fair time frame.

And I say this as someone who doesn't have a house personally but wants one. Housing itself is not so difficult to get if you have zero preferences; I watch the market all the time and see houses open up. But if you have your heart set on a specific lot and saved up so much gil for it and waited until it finally became free.... it's just a shame to lose it so easily after putting in so much time, effort and patience simply because you had other obligations for a month. I don't think it's right.

You're right, it doesn't; but the Dev team is deciding to make the gesture because an area that houses a large number of it's customer base (the United States) was afflicted by devastation.
They made the decision, move on with the day and accept that the dev team is made up of people that can sympathize with the people that have been displaced or aiding those that have been displaced.

And who said this is justice? The concept of Justice isn't involved in this at all.

What's the difference between asking SE or their friends to log on? They still pay their sub.

What's fair and what's an act of justice tend to coincide with each other. If the use of "fair", as per the person in the quote, is to be taken in context, it'd be unfair to not act on the disaster. It's a nice thought I suppose in a round about way.

However, wouldn't a fundraiser with the proceeds going to the victims better achieve a compassionate display?

Will SE bend over backwards like this for every disaster that happens in countries that players reside in, that is the real question. Or is it only limited to countries that have a large enough playerbase so that threads like this get enough attention?

Yes and no.

Yes: Fundraising is always a nice gesture, as per what Blizzard usually does (and currently is doing). In-game item goes up as a microtransaction, all profits go to charities they list for whatever period of time stated. A way to get the in-game community to intentionally... or unintentionally, help victims within not just the community but all of them in general, but also gaining some in-game novelty item. Kinda like how donating blood works, where some people show off whatever badge of honor is given or they do it for some monetary compensation

No: It becomes a question of who to donate to, who's going to fund it, is there time to enact plans regarding it (like in Blizzards act of charity), etc. I mean the main thing to remember on that is how SE is not based in the US. Scrutiny comes into play as per how they'd respond to foreign matters over local. Not saying these are things that should prevent them from fundraising, but just that they are generally factors to the decision. In fact, I find all of that to just be bullshit to even bother thinking about when it comes to the idea of just helping people in general (if time/funds allow).

Either way, it's always about the thought. Think of it like when people say "Thoughts and prayers" to accompany a statement. It doesn't actually do anything, but it's an act of kindness. Yoshi-P's comment stated they'll consider looking into ways to further aid the community affected by it when they learn more about it, so I wouldn't really put it past them to do things as Blizzard does.

Personally, I hope not. It should never be about a fairness aspect, so even the view that this sets the precedent, is warped. It should never be an expected response for a company, that is not related to the disaster, to push aid. These things should always be about an act of kindness. Nothing more. If they do it, great. If they don't, oh well.

They usually do listen to most of our requests that aren't impossible for the game engine, bringing selli back, too expensive to bother with doing, better promo events for europe, or unlocking bunny ears for men. So if people ask, maybe?
