Um...a lot of ppl's first name is mindless as well, for one reason or another. Should that be removed too, then?
For all the stupid names, first and last as well, I think there's a relatively equal amount of normal (dare I say, even creative/original) ones. Remove the surnames and there's gonna be a myriad of XYbazillion69 type of ppl running around. I rather bear with the silliness and mass of text in condensed areas, personally.
im so totally against removal of this.
I just wish i made another mule called: Ben Dover.... >.<
-falls over chair laughing- You seriously should create that character and put "Woodworking" as his chosen class.
Surnames can stay: for those against it, think on the bright side; your fingers get exercise from typing those less-than-30-characters names into the chatlog!
Surenames should just be made optional. They make sending a /tell more tedious then it should be. Sence some people actualy like them that is why i say make them optional not required.
Let me just answer the original question with a resounding NO!
I'm very, very happy FFXIV went with surnames. You can only make so many variations with a single-name before it just starts getting ridiculous. I've seen names in other games that were essentially just a massive string of vowels, and trying to find a reasonable name that isn't taken is atrociously difficult. Surnames allow you to basically have whatever name you want. The end result is a world populated by people with more reasonable names (at least that's the case on Besaid, the roleplaying server).

And here's my response to that song and you:

I happen to really like my name, there is a good reason for surnames. I mean people can usually get the first name they want since all they have to do is have a different last name. I know there are a lot of not so nice names out there, but regardless of how many names you can have there are ALWAYS going to be people who enjoy the "not so nice" names. Taking away surnames is only going to add to the problem. I mean everyone will have to start finding new names. I know my name "Luna" is used a lot, of course when I created my character I did not know that bec I created mine on release. (remade Luna Flower awhile ago but I still had a character on release) That alone is a good enough reason to just let things as they are.
I admit, I didnt like 2 names at first. Now that I have gotten used to it, I have no problem at all.
/thumbsup <surnames>
I actually read all 22 pages. Didn't see one valid reason for A) no surname or B) Optional
>.> Ctrl-R works for reply.....
I just use my friend list or LS list for that 1st /tell to get it going.
I'm fine with surnames. It would be nice if people thought about them a bit though......I mean, if you really don't care at least have a short one. =p
I don't see how Mhatimyhre is any different.
He wouldn't have a surname. He would just select Mhati. People can remember that.
I like my dumb surname, if only because the old Ifrit server doesn't even exist any more. As has been mentioned, I'm also not sure how they'd go about changing the system that's already in place without at least some people being forced to change their first names.
All in all, not a huge issue to me.
I fine with surnames, i for one like them and i dont want have to change my name after playing this long that just be a pain and also will just lead to even more bitching.
I concur. Surnames are utterly stupid. At least when we /tell we should only be required to type their First Name?
Most people who make ridiculously long names with no surname are surely going to make even longer ones with a surname either to grieve other players, think it's funny (at the time) or just doesn't care, i feel my name and surname have a natural feel (Kaminto Komouri) to it, but there are only a handful of us that don't mind trying to pull that off, i agree though that the surname should have been optional, but if SE doesn't want to change this, why not make a radial menu when you target and click on a player and have a tell option within that, i swear the old SE team claimed they did research but I'm not seeing any of it so far...
Personally, I like the way it is now. I think the Shaolin Wushu is pretty nice name for rank 50 pgl :P I was more disappointed that masochist was on a banlist of words you can use as a name. It's an awesome name for a tank ; ;
I wouldn't care if it was optional though. BTW, CRTL+R works you just have to have the chat box active when you do it. I usually type / then go CTRL + R, but the problem with it is it only work when someone replies to you or sends the first tell.
No. There would be a 15 char limit, not a 30.
And nearly Every video game Doesn't use them - including games that have more than 300 ppl on a server at a time.
Being the only person on the server with the name Shaolin would be waay cooler.
But there are probably other people on the server with the first name of Shaolin, so he most likely won't be the only person on the server with the name Shaolin or some variant that he or someone else would have chosen in the first place because it already existed.
I like that family members can share a last name for their characters as well as having a unique first name so that people that play together can be identified as such.
FFXIV failed miserably. Until FFXIV succeeds and we see other MMOs copying its systems, it is a safe bet that if the system currently exists in FFXIV now, it is broken. Surnames need to be removed.

The only reason I could see a game needing surnames is if everyone was playing in a single server.
Surnames has nothing to do with any other element in the game nor how FFXIV is doing. Surnames aren't "needed" but are nice to have. many things are not "needed" but are nice to have. The universe/world/life didn't "need" to exist but I think most people can agree it's nice to have.
I feel like the surname thing is another way SE tried to differentiate their game, albeit minor. But it's like Yoshi-P said, everything originals all the time isn't necessarily a good thing. I'd like to see them done away with. They bring nothing to the game whatsoever. No more so than nameday, deity, or any of that other stuff we choose during character creation (even race tbh, what's the point other than the look?)
Getting rid of them brings nothing to the game whatsoever, however keeping them (other than surnames, which gives people more customization which IMO is always a good thing when balanced which isn't an issue for names at all) does serve potential purposes in the future when SE has more time to implement other things since right now it's not a key issue/in their best interest to work on such minor things right now.
If they can tie surnames into the game somehow (doubtful this will ever happen regardless of where it lands on their "to do list"), I will be impressed.
