I still see no benefit of jumping. In my personal opinion jumping should be left for platformers or adventure games.
But, if the community will be happy with it - so be it. No use in crying now, the dev team is already working on it and might as well just "embrace it".
As for the jumping that was shown in the video, it's ugly. I suppose that jumping in real life looks just as silly.
Wow.
I'm sorry, but until the developers step up and say, "We are adamant with regard to this feature and no longer wish to hear players' thoughts on the matter," the 'battle' has not been 'won' and the only people who need to get out if they don't like it are people who think they have any right to tell people to stop expressing their opinions, for or against any possible adjustment to features already implemented or not, on a development feedback forum.
More than that: you know what? I don't like it, but I think you'll find many such as myself who don't particularly want the feature are willing to discuss ways to accommodate it without it being offensive, or even how people who dislike the idea of jumping being added might actually be able to get behind its implementation.
It's why these forums exist. Should some of the people don't want jumping tone it down some, too? Yes, maybe - a few of them are using pretty foul language. But the same ought go for both sides: keep to expressing your opinions and giving reasonable arguments; "Majority says shut up" just makes you look like a playground bully.
My question is did the majority of Japanese players wanted this? Because last i checked there is no Japanese version of WoW.
Good news that the jump feature has been approved. I support the devs decision on this.
I'm gonna be jumping all day long.
Gotta get something that'll keep spamming the jump key when I afk, to annoy the easily-annoyed.
Challenge accepted!
What about... Resurrection of the Stamina Bar for actions like Jumping? So if it's low you can't jump or whatever action they'll implement in the future.
Just pointing that out there =)
I wanna work my way up to the tallest spire in uldah, then take off all my clothes and jump off!
dear god, I hope they have some sort of jump cool down if jumping is free to do anytime..
Yes let's all pretend to be developers. Enough already.
Why is a jump cool down a solution all of the sudden? People are on their chocobos mostly so what the hell are you worried about with hopping along?
Giving us Jump and redesigning the zones with that in mind will make this POS environment a strong leap forward to being free roam. Something we call a standard for an MMO. Not..... repetitive corridors and roads that are copy pasta'ed where the only unique thing may be a random tree branch or rock on the ground THAT YOU RUN INTO AND GET STUCK AND CANNOT JUMP OVER.
Yeah, this is the way it's suppose to be. Totally.
"Standard." Says who? Ah, right. No innovation allowed. Sorry. SE has the chance to create an entirely new atmosphere for MMOs that doesn't rely on vertical jumping. But no, "we" all want vertical jumping and Lalafell jumping 10 feet in the air. Gotcha. Good thing "we" cleared that up. I'm glad you're here to talk for me and everyone else, as well as setting standards for games.
That's not the case, you people just find every little way to complain about NOT adding jump. Why do you detest something so much? Just accept that they are adding it.
PS I've played them, but coming from you group of people, no one is never right.
I hear this final fantasy feel all the time from ya'll, comparing to the rest of the series.
but then again, I also hear that you can't compare it to non MMO games. Make up your mind what we are gonna compare this one to
Yes, it would be SO ANNOYING to watch people jumping around like bunnies. Good thing we don't have something like that here yet. Just people who like to take out their Ifrit weapons so they light up, then put them away, then take them out again. Over and over and over. That's not annoying AT ALL.
Actually innovation means "to renew or change", it is often misused to describe improvements but the word innovation itself doesn't have anything to do with quality. In fact the quality might increase or decrease, and if you look at the way FFXIV tried to innovate from 11 at launch was clearly not a good result.
Jumping is not by any chance innovation when it comes to gaming.
As far as I can remember there has been jumping (probably even started earlier on all 3 examples, the point is however, it's not by any chance new)
- 2D jumping already on the NES
- 3D jumping already on the PS1
- MMO jumping already in WOW
Obviously to FFXIV it's innovation since it's a change, but so would be removing running speed. The point is really than in MMOs it's more of an innovation to not have jump since nowadays it's basically jumping on the bandwagon.
The point is that the lack of jump was simply a choice of design.
What however is the reason that jump is being implemented is that people want freedom. People want that the devs catter to every small silly complaint that they have, and now the devs are actually giving after, this is not good. The devs should make their own design choices, the fact that they are giving after makes me lose respect towards them. We should not get what we want like that, we should enjoy the game as it is uniquely intended.
When it comes to freedom, the most important part is to set the boundaries right, this is utterly important, freedom is good, but fail to set balance in the form of boundaries and it becomes uninteresting.
Now I'm not only talking about jump, but all the silly mounts that have been shown as well. It makes me wonder where this game is going next.
You mean the lalafell jump he showed then said "but I rejected this, it looked silly" right after? I think you think of yourself as a voice of reason into a barbaric era of MMOing, but honestly it's time to give it up. If you don't have a foundation to build on... you have nothing. SE cannot grow unless they make their game as free as it possibly can be. This is a great thing about MMOs.. and yes, that is a standard.
How can you sit back and ask, "Is it really a standard!?". Yes, free roaming is a standard. It's actually one of the more basic things required of MMOs. This will be my last reply. You are too ignorant to even debate with. It's incredibly saddening.
They know the jump is too high, now we're flaming jump and they're like "crap we knew it looked like crap, shouldn't of shown it" lol. I'm anti jump anyway I've never needed it ever, and if this jump is for battle than i'm even more pissed, I do not want to have to jump dodge attacks, we have the programming already to dodge moves if you simply bothered to move your character instead of eating everything.
GW2, i'm sure it has jumping, but its more dodge based, it took innovation to the next level by adding aquatic combat, and having the x y become more important in that situation. Adding jump is not innovation its just garbled up crap that's useless in every game its ever been in. It was probably invented due to lazy programming, "i don't want to make a mountain they can actually walk up, instead they'll jump like a bunny up a moutain, yeah he's a badass wizard but he has to jump up a mountain isn't that cool?" HELL NO.
Jumping makes me sad.....
Either lala's won't be able to jump over a dime, or they'll look like freaking super mario jumping over shit.
The point is that there are so many other issues that need to be resolved before even considering the addition of a jump feature. That's a big reason why it's such a concern at this point.
I have yet to see anyone argue in favor of adding the jump feature other than "Woot" or "Yay" and getting over small objects.
Honestly are there really small rocks and obststacles that you cannot run over or around now? If you think that jump is going to allow you to move faster or in a straight line, then you are wrong.
They definitley should allow you to turn off the animation and ban it from cities like chocobos.
It's sad to see them adding this to FF. It was more unique in not having the feature. It is not a standard that adds to gameplay.
i just hope they allow all the trolls and all the WoW clone wannabes the ability to jump off LL's bridges :P
Just gonna drop in here and clear up the fact that the jumping animations that were shown were just test animations and Yoshida felt the height was too high/over-the-top so things are still being adjusted. They weren't 100% finalized, finished animations but just a sample video to show off for fun during the LIVE broadcast.
That said, please continue with Jump discussion #2104. ;)
It occurs to me that they really should be more customer conscious. Is it more prudent to add a feature that does nothing to add to game experience and makes your current customers dislike your product, or to add the feature and drive those people away.
I'm not saying that lots of people will quit playing over this issue, but there will be some.
Honestly, will people stop playing if they do not add this feature?
the look of "Jumping" looked allright to me, nothing super fancy & looked smooth.
And yes abit too high, maybe drop it down 15-20%.
Not a big fan of Jump feature, unless its needed for some platform
jumping content, neverthless something new / fun perhaps. meh
(Did enjoy jumping around like an idiot in WoW thou...lol)
There will obviously be jumping related things. Would be nice to jump up and fight on top of a giant enemy for some phase of a large-scale battle.
It's like the stupid giant cake, they wouldn't add it if they didn't have any plans for it.

F: Q: it's not mentioned in the 2.0 docs but whats going on with jump or swimming?
Y: For 2.0 we are remodeling all the maps so it requires lots of checks, so we’re talking about including this with 2.0 but just ending with that is kind of sad so here is one more spoiler, and this one is movie too
https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/dR...yhMA4YN4q9lzPo
F: it jumped
Y: this one I said it’s jumping too high and said no to this one but strangely when it’s with this guy
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/Wf...D-cmg-Mr537Was
(lalafel jumping)
F: it’s jumping the same height?
Y: yeah same height but when it’s with him it doesn’t feel too much awkward, however this height is too comical so we’re still making adjustments like this and testing.
Also for swimming this will be after 2.0 but instead of just being able to swim we want to add stuff like underwater temple, or raid using water, and we’re talking about what to do about breathing air. We want to do it, we’re not to a point yet to tell the dev on what stance to develop this in yet, this will be after.
I'm glad Yoshida-san agreed the jump was a little over-dramatic. Though, if anyone wearing Dragoon armor jumps like that, I'll give them a pass.
I don't believe it. Unless, by chance, you are a developer at Square Enix?
Why would that be nice?
Seems pointless. Fix party alliances, loot drop management, looking for group, linkshell management, server lag, /random, inventory sorting, AH and a multitude of other issues before even comtemplating the addition of jump.
On second thought, just fix the problems and forget about jump.
