Just caught Jack the Snipper. Used
Nighttime Clear skies, used Goby balls instead of rat tails

Anyone working on Armorer? I've been fishing it for 6 straight EZ days and only get Halibut with Krill Bait.
Based on http://ff14angler.com/fish/210 - clear, Northern Krill, 19:00 - 2:00.
Yeah I've saw, but every time I get a "big fish" animation it's that damn Halibut lol. G358/P289 Driving me mad lol....but I guess this is karma for getting my other 16 big fish within minutes of trying lol.
After this fish and Junkmonger I will be done with La Noscea.
I finally caught the guy, seems he likes to be around foggy/strong wind (3 trees) weather based on other comments on him.

Night time definitly seems to be his preference also as he's "escaped" a few times before I caught him.
As a lvl 50 Fisher with a fully melded AF set and Relic Rod, who fishes purely for cooking profit (Giant Catfish HQ, Mahi-Mahi, Razor Clams, Rothlyt Oysters, Fullmoon Sardines, Silver/Hammerhead sharks), is there a reason to obtaining the i70 Fishing Rod for someone who fishes for the matterials vs. the Fishing log?
Asside from pure Achievements, will this Rod effect my style of fishing? Will the enhanced Gathering/Perception push me above a plateau that increases my chances at landing the moochables (HQ Silver Fish/Melthor Goby)
Or is this simply something they added for bored fishermen to do? To compare logs/greatest catches etc.
I'm trying to figure out if i should waste my time even trying to get this rod due to the way i fish. (Foragers Hat already obtained from 2star BTN/Miner)
I can confirm Slime King can be caught under Cloudy weather as well, just got it as my last Legendary fish. :)
How do you get 348 gathering from gear? Using http://ffxiv.ariyala.com/ the best I'm getting from pure gear is 339 with max gathering melds. where is this extra 9 coming from?
I'd say waste the time here and there to get rod now, for the future. May not be worth while now, but you know S/E will introduce fish after level cap increase that can only be fished up with the very best gear.
thank you OP
Looks like Old Softie can be fished up in clear sunny weather.

edit:
LOL 2 minutes later: He can be fished up in foggy weather too.:D

the "need" means how much more you need to add
the red 1 and 2 means i used +3 materia since they don't have materia lower than 3, but when you meld it you'll only get 1 or 2 out of it for the stat
use ilvl70 accessories to do 5/5 cap melds.
i used gryphonskin choker, rose gold ear screws, gryphonskin wristband and gryphon rings. all those cap 5/5, but you can use astral stuff or whatever else
buy all HQ fishing gear.
Hamlet pullers Hat meld +6p +5p +4g (until you get the Foragers hat, then use that which has 82p and 4g)
body meld +6p +6g +5g
hands meld +4p +6g +3g(it'll show +2)
legs meld +3p(it'll show 1) and +6g
boots +6p +3g(it'll show 1)
the new dodore belt is better than raptorskin survivor belt for fisher
dodore survival belt HQ base is +16p, add +4g and +3p will make it 19p and 4g capped (it has better stats but currently is a ton of $$$$$)
raptorskin survival belt HQ base is +14p, add +3g and +3p(it'll show 2) which is 16p and 3g capped
so if you meld everything i've originally listed using HQ's, i70 accessories, have foragers hat/rod, you'll have 348g and 289p (without food buffs....) http://i.imgur.com/EI1kxjb.jpg http://i.imgur.com/AJv3838.png
if you get the new dodore survivor belt HQ, add +4g and +3p, you'll have 349g and 292p http://i.imgur.com/KDIeQwI.png
if you can get the new dodore belt AND Halcyon Rod Supra (153g 88p) you'll get even greater stats (currently a lot of $$$) and gear caps will be 359g and 298p http://i.imgur.com/fhaucLY.png
then use food if you need to get a little higher numbers (Spinach Quiche, landtrap salad, etc etc), as well as free company actions
Western La Noscea
Megalodon - The Ship Graveyard - Daytime - Clear/Windy - Lugworm - 301+? - Mooch from Merlthor Goby, double mooch Goby to Wahoo
Thanks for the contribution, but the megalodon is a known fish! The list in the OP is purely for the new Big Fish that were added in patch 2.2, and serves only as quick collection of data until all the relevant database websites manage to collect everything.
I'm glad to see other fishers though! Keep pulling :D.
Not sure if this has already been mentioned, but the Gigantshark can be double mooched using Ogre Barracuda (HQ), mooched from Harboring Herring (HQ) or Merlthor Goby (HQ).
I caught old softie @ 8:10 PM so I think the window might be 5-9pm
Matron Carp needs to be adjusted to read -- 3 pm to 9 pm, Fair (or) Cloudy conditions, Bloodworm
Chirurgeon needs to be adjusted to read -- Cloudy, Fair, or Clear conditions. Not willing to dispute the time requirements yet, but the Japanese website says it can be caught at any time, and also indicates it can be caught in the rain.
Judgeray needs to be adjusted to read -- 5 pm to 9 pm. I would almost like to say 10 pm. I got a bite at 9:17 pm which broke my line and took my Wildfowl Fly, and that was with Gathering at 366. Until I do catch it after 9 pm though, I'll have to stick with my above times.
Junkmonger is higher than 301, i just hooked him at 308 and got "Your gathering rating is insufficcient for landing this catch.
Thank you everyone!
Don't know whether this is mentioned somewhere earlier in the thread, but the game states that You need 290 gathering to catch an "old one" (Big Fish). So at least some of them should be catchable with just that.

Like the first post mentions it is probably still better to have higher gathering, to prevent the fish from slipping through your fingers.
Yesterday I catched Mud Golem with first try :D.
But is it good for something?
Trying sell it, but seems no one looking for it. Mine is first in market.
I just bought hat and rod. :p
Fished 30 HQ. Yahoooooo.
Your max gathering from gear is not 348, it is only 348 when you have the FC buff on, same thing with perception, it is only 289 when you have the FC buff on. So you might want to look at your calculations again. But then again your max gathering with the FC buff is still wrong because you still can add 1 more gathering and 1 more perception to your legs and feet, but a lot of people don't do that because it would just be a waist of materia.
My Gathering without any buffs is 347, and my Perception without buffs is 286. The only gear I don't have max melded is my Waist. Huckster's stats above are correct. Your stats might be lower if you are still using Raptorskin accessories instead of Gryphonskin.
As a side note, I need some information from ya'll. I've been noticing an extreme amount of ** (G) that I have been unable to catch any HQ specimens of. Even with 371 Gathering, I still lose bait (rarely though), even from fish that have a much lower Gathering requirement, such as 301+. So I'm asking ya'll to rummage through your lockers and post what fish you have caught HQ on. My list is as follows: Armorer, Junkmonger, Octomammoth, Syldra, Navigator's Brand, Storm Dancer, Bloody Brewer, Moldva, Mud Golem, Silver Sovereign, Caterwauler, Oschon's Print. I've caught all the ** (G) NQ's. Thank you.
Just wanted to pop in and say that I have 307 gathering, and while this list shows that the Goldenfin needs 345+ gathering to get, I was able to get him with no problems..
Might even be my luckiest catch ever. Sat down prepared to wait a while and miss a lot, but 20 seconds in I had him. He was my 2nd catch
Anyone knows the lower possible Perception stat to be still able to catch HQ Silver Sovereign? I have Gathering at 307 but Perception quite low (213 atm without any buffs) - the reason is that it's on my alt which I've leveled up to 50 only to get two Fisher retainers so I don't want to spend too much effort on (over)melding it - all I want is to get new rods and hats for all 3. Or do I need to get gathering to (over) 310 to be able to HQ it? Thanks in advance for any tips. So far I've got 35 NQ ones in 3 (IRL) days, about 10 Mahis (2 HQ) ... Looks like I will kick myself to finally craft some HQ gathering food.
I was fishing Syldra today and haven't checked this thread numbers yet and they scared me quite a bit. I was able to get Syldra on first try she appeared with 339 Gathering using Landtrap Sallad as food. Are you sure some numbers are correct? Also thanks for all the other information, helped a lot. But that 356+ on the Rivet Oyster is really a think, it is possible to get it without using FC bonus? Because food for me will be up all the time for sure. Thanks again.
