I can say I sub so they'll give me foot rubs, doesn't make it a service I'm paying for.
I'll reiterate, since it was so delusional:
Nice little argument, but it's not even close to what I said.

So, are you saying that you are so conditioned by the US business mentality that you can't understand why other countries find it advisable and/or logical to mandate come vacation time? This is why people in other countries sometimes can't believe what they see when they get a deeper look at US culture. I moved to the US from the UK a while back and after as many years as it's been I still feel the culture shock of a place where new employees feel fortunate to have 10 paid vacation days in a year. It's no wonder that Americans are so stressed out and easily annoyed, they never get any rest. I have just graduated to 20 paid days a year and feel like a rich person, but if I were to change jobs the odds are I'd start over at 10/year. I'd rather have my teeth extracted with a plumbers wrench than go back to 10 vacation days a year.
I can very much see a lack of vacation time being considered "Very fucked up" by pretty much anyone outside the USA.
For anyone that played WKC, this is not a very friendly post. That game was killed early by SCEA and their selected US publisher, and left a very bitter taste in the mouths of it's players.
To all of the folks here mentioning that we technically only pay for access to the servers: Can you provide me with an email address so that my Nigerian friends can contact you about some lucrative (not for you) opportunities?
Disclaimer: This is a joke (I mean, this may have whooshed by you as well, so I'll be blatantly clear about it here) DO NOT SEND ME AN EMAIL but feel free to drop out of the White Knight Academy, you've been brainwashed and don't know it...
This is the truth of all games, not just this one. Every game that has ever graced a console or PC grants only two 'rights' under their ToS or EULA. 'Freedom' to play the game as presented and limited ownership of the media it was sold on if such media exists. Anything beyond that falls under different rules that are governed by the laws of the country you live in. This has been the state of games and gaming (and pretty much any other media) since it's been a thing. And it hasn't changed in all that time, just been made more complicated in it's legalese. Yes, 'bending over' for it is lame and all that but companies take their property, and this game is still Square's property, very seriously. Just look at all the copyright claims against Youtube videos these past few years to see how serious.
Because that would never happen. Content does and that is understood by both parties. I don't know why you keep saying it's not when SE aknowledges that. The only people treating patches like god's gift are the fanboys, everytime SE talks about it it's something the players are owed. The minute they stop making content everyone will leave. I wonder why's that since "technically" the service is the same because that's what the ToS says... could be it be because it's not!?
Everything they put into FFXIV set a standard, be it graphics, amount of content, voice acting, quality of the soundtrack, and even (gasp) pace of patches release. Wether it's lack of funds, staff mismanagment, shortsightedness, setting un unachievable goal in the long run - pick whatever suits you it's still all on them and none on the costumer, they are not keeping up with the standard they set but are asking the same monthly fee as when they did. That would generate criticism anywhere, but only here people would rush to defend them.
If I went to restaurand and they don't serve me in a reasonable time (the one that's expected of them because it's what they usually do) I'd get an apology and a discount without asking for it even though serving times were never agreed upon... not the next table yelling at me to leave if I don't like it. That's how any proper company acts, not "lol sorry chef's on vacation, wait till next month".
Restaurants aren't a good analogy as food service is a completely different industry from games. You don't subscribe to a restaurant, nor do you take the chef home when you're done so you can enjoy it any time you want afterward. As such it's only natural that they'd go out of their way to make you want to eat there again. Nor is it a federal offense to copy the menu of another restaurant and serve it as your own dish. A great documentary of such an occurrence is "In Search of General Tso" where the film makers trace the origin of Chinese restaurant staple General Tso's Chicken. This is a not a restaurant, this is a game. An MMO, but a game all the same. I've already said my thoughts on what that entails so I shan't repeat myself on the subject.
The game costs with an Entry subscription fee $12/month.
You are told the next update to new content will be five months.
You have spent $60 waiting for the new content. $60 which could have been spent on a brand new game rich in new content, story, quests, multiplayer with friends, etc.
This is why people have a problem and "feel entitled", and justifiably so. You are in fact paying a subscription because it grants you access to new content that you can enjoy. A MMO-free-to-play does not charge you per month, and hence if that game does not update in five years, you wouldn't have any grounds to complain since none of your money was lost to negative utility.
At the current moment, you as a subscriber have been told you need to wait out five months and be expected to pay $60 minimum for the wait, knowing full well you can take that money elsewhere and are guaranteed to have positive returns on your investment, in the form of a new game or service to something else, like xbox live, PS+, netflix, etc.
The "entitlement" is quite justifiable for the consumer because the consumer can always walk away. The producer (the FFXIV developer team) cannot. Their product would go under. So while it is expected that they aren't chained to their work desks, they should also be expected to deliver content in a timely manner, because that is the ultimate justification to a paid-subscription for anything.
