Sadly, you are correct. A 9 year old game is 10x better.

Some of these topics and statements doesn't help... bring old tired elements into a new generation of MMORPGs isn't always the best choice are the right one... Seriously how many of you get up and throw some disco clothes on and go to the club? my point is this somethings are just ridiculous. FFXI is great and i agree strongly but this game does not need to be a FFXI-2 by any means... I'm sure there can be better answers instead of let's do it like XI which i keep seeing...
I'd say they had business removing xp loss when they said they wanted to make the game more friendly to casuals. I would bet you it was in the business plan they submitted to investors.
Actually, id prefer neither in the state of this game. The battle system is too clumsy, still.
Once it is fixed though, repairs take a hit not exp.
Why? Just because I died shouldn't mean my time spent on the game was a waste of time. Thats too brutal of a penalty.
This a hundred times over. Increasing the chance of failure causes people to become a lot less flexible because what they're looking for is ways to minimize failure from the get go. It also dissuades exploration and general enjoyment. I have a friend who refused to enter the Near East in FFXI after dying several times to the smartly-added (/sarcasm) true-sight imps back when the cap was 75. That's the kind of thing that should just not happen.
How about exp loss ONLY beyond level 50. This way casual players are not affected, and elitists also get their fill at cap.
Yes because should they ever raise the level cap casual players will never achieve high end content because they are casual players and not hard core gamers. Sorry but it has to be one way or the other not both. And I for one am for having to pay a repair bill over having to regain exp because the tank had a lag spike.
When it comes to this issue I feel that it should NOT be an exp loss. Durability loss on death is a fair enough punishment imo.
Nothing was more furious than losing exp when dying in FFXI because a lot of the time all I was trying to do is run through zones so I could actually GET somewhere to level.
Does anyone remember zoning into 2nd jungle after someone had zoned a goblin, only to load up and see you are already dead? That's not even fair to be punished for. Or, my favorite, I was in 2nd jungle ON A CHOCOBO seeking a party. Someone zoned a goblin and as it was chasing it bomb tossed someone near me and KILLED ME while I was ON A CHOCOBO. This down leveled me, forcing me to go back and seek a party in 1st jungle. This kind of punishment isn't even fair for dying especially when it is not even your fault.
