No Thanks~ i don't want a free to play game .
Games don't go free to play because it's the new thing to do. Look at Rift. It's had a subscription for it's two year lifespan. While the game itself isn't something that I enjoy a whole lot, it's a quality title and actually cares for their game. They don't deny that it's not blatantly taking ideas from WoW, but with their own twist, or enhancing it. SWTOR failed because it was a bad game. It didn't try to change WoW's ideas, and rather copied them down to the skill progression.
TERA is failing because it's got poor content.
GW2 is going downhill because they're pretty much going pay2win along with stabbing their fans in the back by bringing in the gear treadmill, DESPITE SAYING HOW DIFFERENT GW2 WAS FROM OTHER MMOs, etc.
Pay to play is not what makes a game fail, being a shitty game is what makes a game fail.
F2P works best when implemented in the design phase, not a last ditch effort to try and bring people to your game. Since FFXIV is being designed as a "P2P update every 2-3 months" style game, you can't change it to f2p without having to significantly undergo massive changes.
Yoshi-P has stated several times that he's looked into f2p and b2p models, and they just aren't a good fit for FFXIV.
they should add a dislike feature to the forums, and keep track of your net balance of likes vs. dislikes. once your balance dips into the negative you have to pay for a microtransaction for each new thread/post you want to make until your balance is positive again. or you can simply buy likes for .50 cents each!
that sort of model is what you f2p people like, right? right?
maybe open up the forums to anyone even without a subscription, but charge people each time they view a thread?
this would work, right? free official forums for all! it's the future
Aside from these it also attracts people that have no investment in the game. I'm not talking about advertising bots and mules, but rather people that say " oh I'm only playing this game because its free. I won't pay for this.". these people have no interest in the games success or improvement. and do more mindless consuming of content than anything involving the community.

GW2 isn't anything near or remotely close to a P2W model. You buy the game, that's it. You want stuff from Black Market cash shop?(95% of it is fluff. The consumables that aren't aren't anything better than craftable items) Then save up your ingame currency and exchange it for gems(real world currency converted to ingame currency to buy cash shop items. Think of it as Nexon points) to buy everything you'd need. Don't spend a penny. Voila. Gold is not hard at all to make in GW2 past level 50s anyways. :P
Just had to point out your blatant error.
*Now I'm wondering if you've EVER played any of the games you were berating... most don't it seems. Incase you are, don't bandwagon the whambulance. That's just shameful..*
GW2 fanboys/girls have absolutely no room to talk about bandwagoneering considering the vast majority of hype surrounding the game was complete marketing-induced bandwagon hysteria.
and no it's not really a P2W model because there's no meaningful content you'd need and edge to win in the first place. but the point still stands- they promised it wouldn't be quest-based leveling and that's 90% of it. they promised it wouldn't be grindy and it's one of the grindiest games i've played in recent memory. and they promised the gear treadmill wouldn't exist, and yet...
you get the picture.
gw2 is all flash, no bang. promises undelivered. even without a subscription model people are still quitting the game at about the same rate as people did with SWTOR, which was seen as a colossal failure. the game is empty and without soul. it's something you log in to play for a couple hours once a month and run around doing nothing important before you realize your time would be better spent wanking off or punching yourself in the face. or both.
tl;dr anyone using gw2 as an example of why xiv should be f2p needs to get their heads checked. the point is to make a game that not only succeeds, but has longevity- not to make a bunch of empty promises then essentially fail in alllllllll the same ways everyone else did before.
I thought all the whiney freeloaders were gone when SE restricted the forums to people who had active paying acounts.
Sigh.
I would quit if it went Free to Play.
no free to play MMO has held my interest for more then about 1 months.
If you want free to play... go play one of the 100 free to play games if you want a quality game pay to play is the way to go.
DnD was the only free to play game model I ever liked.
oo wait it had free to play very limits. Pay to play full content.
Buying currency in game is still giving you an advantage over others. It's pay to win. Gil isn't hard to make in FFXIV either, so does that justify an in game cash shop for gil?
I did play SWTOR and TERA, actually. I played the open weekend betas for SWTOR and it was a fucking atrocity. I enjoyed TERA's combat to some extent, but everything else about the game was incredibly dull. I'm well aware of what I'm talking about.
All of these games that you listed or at least most of them are f2p only due to the fact that they started as p2p and bombed at launch and by doing so lost nearly 90% of their initial player base which is why they are all now f2p games. make sure that you do your research before listing a bunch of games that were un-successful in the beginning
NOne of the above games are multi platformed which FFXIV ARR will be on ps3
Free to play is a complete rippoff in the first 2 years of playing. You have to pay for so damn much its insane. That and the amount of content you can do per week in some of the games is limited.
In LOTRO you have to pay literally as much as you would pay for 7-8 months of subscription fees JUST to reach level 50. After that you pay MORE. Its more worth it to just pay the subscription fee.
Free to play is stupid imo... Most of those games went with their current model because of quick profits off of content that gets released every 6-8 months.
They cap how much you can hold and make you pay real-world money for everything
Lets face it, pay to play is a way better value for the casual gamer as well as hardcore. No spending $10-20 for content every time you reach it.
Free to play is used on games that were either made to BE free, or P2P games which failed and the only way the company could keep their shareholders/investors happy was if they increased the amount of possible income. Its also used when the population drops so low that the Pay to play players can't do any content from lack of people, so they raise it so subscribers can do content. (which may have been the real case behind SWTOR going F2P since its population dropped so much)
I gladly paid for 1.0 because to me it was more enjoyable than FFXI has been since it turned into a mindless gear farm with abyssea and voidwatch. It was worth it and 2.0 seems much better and I'm a critic of almost everything. Lol
No F2P game is really free to play, you DO have to pay for almost everything you do and want and if often costs more than the game itself did.
SE could easily make money off an in-game store though, Specially if they added a cosmetic gear shop, offered paid race changes, appearance changes, name changes... there is a LOT they could do that F2P games do and still turn a bigger profit.
Pay to play is much better, both in concept and value. Eventually those F2P people run out of things to buy, or just stop paying for the extra stuff. Pay to play on long-time subscribers will help SE profit more.
this game needs the opposite of f2p, it needs to pump out as much content as it can patch by patch and keep us paying our subs. i want to see this game succeed like ffxi, i want expansion after expansion of content. i would love to finally get another mmo that i can play for 5years b4 starting to be bored. and lets not kid ourselves if the content kept coming out just as quickly i would of never got bored or left. (abysea not included i would of left just cause of that expansion either way lol)
long term progression all the way and i'll pay for long time.
If FFXI lasted 10yrs with p2p i doubt the same company will do this game as f2p and thank goodness for that.
I prefer to pay a subscription fee to support SE to continuously work on the game for updates and expansions for longer term and more enjoyable contents.
Why thank you /bow :P
GOD no way im sorry but mostly FF fan will like P2P because u get better shit that way then F2P and plus if you want sooo badly F2P just go play those game and dont come here crying about it i want a game that will continue progressing in the long term and not a game that rarely do patch or expansions because is F2P no again NO THANK YOU!!!
Lets all not forget one very important thing... F2P games don't ALWAYS get more profit, its a gamble. P2P option ensures they will get monthly fee so long as no one cancels... F2P doesn't mean anyone will buy anything at all. A lot of F2P people only buy stuff once in a while.
And i hope they dont do F2P on 14...
MMO is generally used as a short-hand term (in typical circles) to mean "MMORPG", the first incarnation of these types of games. However there are also MMOFPS and MOBA (which are MMO-action games, sometimes just called MMOGs).
MMORPGs and MOBAs have F2P + cash shop models in place most typically, but MMOFPS are going that same route (see: Planetside 2, MechWarrior Online, other games in the pipe).
Halo, CoD, and the rest are not MMO because they do not have persistent world game models. That is one of the criterion for a FPS to jump into the MMO world.
All these games are successful to some degree and various companies have tried different models for revenue. MMORPGs are going the route of F2P + Cash shop because it is lucrative. It makes more money over time and incentivizes being able to play the game without a real committment. You can think of subscription-based models vs. cash shop like fishing. Subscription based models are a lake where everyone casts their line and everybody gets a small fish. In F2P models, not everyone catches a fish, but a few people catch really big fish, and some catch monstrous ones (size=money spent in this analogy). Developers can force you to target the big fish by figuring out exactly what you'd spend money on. It works, period. I'm not personally for THIS GAME going F2P but the retarded level of discussion happening in parts of this thread (and others like it) is (are) testament to how little the average poster here actually understands about F2P models. Chances are all they ever played was FFXI and because that 'worked for them' that automatically means it must work for everyone else too. Sorry, but that's just wrong. More people in this world prefer F2P model than subscription based now. Times have changed and that's how it is, sadly or otherwise for you, whichever you choose to believe.

But really, I would much rather pay my 2c and then have a right to complain and other wise request better from a provided... then have free service and have NO say it it what so ever.. for those 15$ you pay you get the option to expect more and they have to deliver.. if free you can't expect anything, and you get nothing...
Start of p2p in January to November first the changes introduced well cover the money payed. But remove the subscription money and we would be say place with little advancement...
No just no this thread starter should be banned just no stop asking for f2p its not going to happen go cry about it somewhere else because everyone here is tired of seeing it
The sad thing is I'm starting to feel that a return to the spam of F2P and marriage threads would be preferable than the current lolalpharage threads.
I don't mind the monthly subscription...it keeps away those annoying 10 year olds that want to play MMOs but can't because they need their parent's permission and credit card.
Yes SE make levels 1-10 f2P. this is a good way to let ppl experiance the game.... alot of other comapanys have done this option and it works....
some solid points in here.. and some really dumb ass ideas/points in here. I don't think some people ever really stop and think these days
