[Feedback] Wuk Lamat's English Voice

I played the quest and thought the voice was great. The character sounds excited to be going on an adventure.

Also Tural is a fictional place so saying they must should have type of accent based on real world doesn't even make sense. We do not know what the people of Tural sound like because so far there is only 1 character in the game from there.

She apparently grew up with erenville and he sounds nothing like a south American. I saw someone say Icelandic? So... Yeah...

Based on these threads, I initially felt dread during Quest 1 where I found the actor to do a bad job. However, the quality of the acting improved during the 2nd and 3rd quests - maybe they got more comfortable with the role. Character is likable enough despite some mary sue moments that felt a bit forced. I'll keep an open mind but this is as much on the writers as the actor.

I don't see a problem with the voice. It fits perfectly and I like it.

The people saying "poor voice acting" have probably not heard poor voice acting before like I have. I watched some Star Trek fan films once and they were just emotionless, reading slowly from a script and it was hard to watch. That was when I realized all the actors I see professionally hired on TV are actually very good. It's no different here. The actors SE hires are very good at what they do.

I don't understand how this is 22 pages.

You're not the only one who has watched shitty Star Trek Films.
Even so, the existence of 1/10 VAs does not make a 4/10 VA "very good".

Let me preface this by saying I do not speak spanish (ok a few words picked up here or there from living in Texas). I have however heard many native Spanish speakers from many parts of the world speak English. Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, Brazilians, Hondurans, Spaniards, Cubans and I am sure many more. I have heard enough to know there is no one Spanish accent. They are all distinct.

I had to hunt down video of the Voice Acting in question as I am not to that part of the story line yet. Just my opinion here. It didn't sound like any of the Spanish accents I have ever heard. I can't quite put my finger on what it did sound like but not Spanish.

Now to be fair. I generally don't expect much from gaming Voice acting. I am pretty good at suspension of disbelief. It is a fictional world with fictional characters of fictional nationalities that might loosely be based on real world ones. I tend not to get too bent out of shape when things don't match up. In fact this particular Voice acting might be easier for me to accept because it doesn't sound like anything real.

Agreed. It's time for Square Enix to lay off their Broadway/West End voice actors for cheaper talent from Twitter since it's just as good. The company can use the savings to lower our sub fee or make more content. How does that sound?

What makes you think that? There's been a number of games where the voice acting has been of dubious quality and ridiculed and/or deemed immersion breaking.

The early Resident Evil games were notorious for that and many people posting here regularly play other games. Though you can look at many modern games and see that if a particular bit of voice acting isn't the best and has strange delivery then it stands a good chance of being discussed as an issue.

The thread is twenty two pages long because the forum is being used for its intended purpose - discussion and feedback. What is a non-issue to a particular player or group of players is not necessarily a non-issue for others.

I do not raid these days so I do not care much for raiding, though I do care about immersion and consistency when it comes to storytelling and characters - which is just as much about the audio cues as much as the text itself. You're not obligated to consider such things to be a priority but there's enough people saying otherwise to make it clear that it's a credible concern for those who do.

Trying to minimize my opinion because he doesn't think I don't know a bad voice performance when I hear one. Smh...

Some of you all, need to stop bringing up other aspects of the game as strawmen against the topic.
Few being how the content is ran or fees.
And as with voices, internal, external or otherwise and other types.

it's still subjective, so even if two people watched the same terrible fan creation. some may spot different negatives and positives from a situation.

We really just need to see.

to point out that the trailer voice is a Rothgal. no one really had any issues. and just like some said before. it was obvious. <unless you were some of the few who didn't pay attention at that part of the trailer, and realize it wasn't alphinaud or erenville.> how you even confuse those two elezen and viera as well is astonishing but understandable if you're not paying attention at the time.)

See how it turns out, Wuk Lamat will improve and find their way of doing.

And like the Twins Voices in ARR. we will just need to see how it goes throughout DT to understand how the Voice fits.

And not give the devs a well needed pay increase? Listen you know as well as I do the devs of the game have to have a one month break every patch cycle and that cant pay for itself. Not to mention the increasing costs of everything else. Especially the devs who work the cash shop and produce quality products every month. Do you know how much those devs in particular need a raise. The players should be greatful, not more demanding of the devs

I think her voice is great..... why are you guys afraid of warrior women? She is absolutely awesome in every possible way.

Really was something needed for this game, it is the best patch for several years.

If it’s so important, they should recast every elezen’s voice actors because they’re supposed inspired by the French.
Also they’d want to recast Othard and prolly Garleans too, if they need to be voiced by people of countries the regions are inspired by.

Some people are just pointing out she’s American to have a reason to hate on her and that’s cringe.

Can you cite where the devs are not paid enough? or are being over worked? glassdoor reviews/stats?

Thing is this isn't the first time we've had a different accent in the game, hell a good portion of EW was Thavnair where every character had a very clear Indian accent. This is legit just people complaining for the sake of complaining. I personally think she did a fine job as Wuk Lamat.

She is, also she is not good at Eorzean either as of language that is, it will explain things.

She is much different... and maybe should look more at like a huntress/warrior hybrid instead, but there is more to it.. she is straight forward with things, which no other NPC really is at all in FFXIV... embrace the change, don't fight it.

Because she is also a person adopted into nobility and isn't the "GRRRRRAAAAHHHH SMASH EVERYTHING, YEA DRINKING AND VIOLENCE" DnD-born stereotype that people think warriors are. Moenbryda didn't sound like a stereotypical warrior woman yet her main weapon was an axe, Lyse was also a physical fighter and her voice didn't fit the stereotype. This is once more complaining for the sake of complaining. It's easier to point to the few characters that match their job type than it is to characters that don't fit a fantasy class stereotype.

Throughout history it was more common to find martial discplined people to engage in various cultural works, especially if they were nobleborn or adopted into it because a leader needs to be versatile and know more. A good example is Ghengis Khan who lead steppe tribes commonly viewed as 'barbaric' into an effecient military force that created one of the biggest empires in human history. He was not only a note-worthy fighter but was incredibly skilled with logistics and administrating the Mongolian Empire, he valued art, history and would rebuild cities he completely conquered and destroyed by sparing builders, architects, artists and various other skilled professions.

Correct she doesn't sound like a warrior woman because she isn't a class stereotype, she sounds like a regular person because that's how the game often portrays characters.

Sadu is a character that has a very small part in FFXIV, the diversity in the different in game communities is a thing to take note of as well, I would hate if everyone was a garlean or typical garlean in FFXIV that is... or La Noscae only personlaties... and more to it.

As I said embrace the change.... I don't think Sadu fights other Aura to eat them when they have been dealt with for starters that is.

Well obviously SE thinks it's a priority because Tunisian actors were used in EW and Sena Bryer is Latino. So you all can continue whitewash the game but that isn't going to happen. So shut up.

Like really, you're just embarrassing yourselves. Of course it matters to represent cultures whenever possible. And they are doing that.

It's incredibly funny to use Sadu as a example because Sadu isn't even a physical warrior, she is a magic user. She is also shown to be a skilled leader that takes care of her tribe. So are we now saying the stereotype for magic users is fight happy?

What is a warrior woman meant to sound like though? Most of the warrior women I know in fiction have a vastly different range when it comes to how they are voiced. Some are deep and orcish, others are light and fun like Karlach, and some are just very posh British archaeologists.

That said I now want Sadu and Wuk to meet. They would get on great I think, with poor Little Sun getting rejected once again...

We are talking about her character, and if the voice fits that character.
Besides, she doesn't act like royalty at all. She goes on hunts in the wilderness with an axe, she has no table manners, and can't read the room.
That is a warrior woman.

I never said it always has to be the case. But like EW it's the first time we are getting a zone heavily inspired by these regions. It isnt outrageous for someone to want one of the primary characters who is voicing a noticeable accent to actually be from one of those regions. And obviously SE agrees, since that is what they did. And again it was done for 6.0 with more than one character ..so me having this expectation is not at all unreasonable. I fully expect more regional actors to appear. Obviously SE doesn't want to have fake portrayals if it's possible. Why would anyone want that?

Also your focus on skintone makes you sound very disingenuous because South America and Latino regions have varying skintones from light to dark. So no it has literally nothing at all to do with that. Wuk Lamat is literally a furry btw. And in 6
0 they were elephants and a dragon.

Sadu loves fighting. Sadu and Wuk Lamat are pretty similar in that aspect.

Also: They call me the Warrior of Light although I sometimes play Blackmage.

Well good news for me then, because I personally did not think she sounded like a wimp at all! Unless you mean the fact that she is not as boisterous or unafraid as she likes to make out, in which case thats not a weakness. You can still be a ‘warrior woman’ with flaws, thats just good writing. Plus we have only had a handful of scenes with her so far. Soon we will have a whole expansion worth of story to explore alongside this character. I would not be surprised one bit if growing in strength and actual confidence will be part of her arc. Just like with a warrior womans voice, their stories and character journeys vastly differ between examples, and I do not think one is less objectively valid then the other.

If it was intentional, those moments of weakness would only shine through in the moments where she is actually weak.
But she always sounds like that in the english version (opposed to all the other versions I've seen). Shaky, inconsistent, nervous and low energy.
That's not writing, that is bad voice direction and / or acting.

Some line delivery wasn’t as good, but I think that is more of a direction issue which sometimes has happened Post COVID with the English dubbing. You have to let her get a little used to the character.

Well I for one cannot hear that at all in her general performance, she came across as inquisitive and optimistic enough for me, but each to their own! Hopefully you enjoy her performance in DT more.

After listening to English VS Japanese

JP curb stomps hard, emotion, expressions in sentences, overall can connect with the character

English: Good Lord this is ARR voice acting level, no emotion, no expressions and the accent doesn't fit at all. You can't seriously connect to characters if voice acting is a major down play for English speakers.

Seriously this is nothing to do who Sena Bryer identifies, or w/e. The issue is this is cheap voice acting, it's bad and people need to stop brigading it just because their transgender so they feel like they're a hero in society granting support no matter how bad, when it is far more evil controlling way people think and speak because you disagree.

The voice acting sucks, Sena really needs coaching, or serious improvements in the future. SE seriously cannot be returning to hiring terrible VAs saving budget.

English is ARR level
JP is SHB/EW++ level.

Really wish the game let you choose the language per character. Some fighting games do that these days and its pretty enjoyable. Some characters I really like in English and some in Japanese.

I'm sure she was coached over the course of the expansion. I mean were you crying this hard from her line in the trailer? No you were not and neither was anyone else. That's because the trailer is likely the most recently recorded thing and she sounds fine in it.

Maybe people will empathize more with your position once the expansion is actually out and we have more than 10 minutes of dialogue.

You're saying things like "seemingly", "I'm sure" or "likely", which don't really give me confidence that you know what you're talking about.

The reason why people didn't complain about the trailer is because it contained very little to go off of.
They were waiting for 6.55 to make their judgement.

Mate, I saw this thread and cringed reading feedback and taken a look myself viewing cutscenes on Youtube, it really is bad. You don't hire an unknown lacking experience vs other colleagues with major experience. G'raha Tia is acted by Jonathan Bailey, guy has been acting since 1995 as a child, doing TV shows etc. Robyn Addison has stared in popular UK TV shows (Voices Y'shtola), large amount of experiences. Get it now?

Hiring someone cheap to voice act, you're expecting a lot of negativity, disgust with the performance. If this the best Sena can do, then she really needs to pick up the act, or expect people switching dubs.

Control MY opinion? Old thread pal, or certain pages in this thread.
