I personally just NPC everything. between guild leves, fishing, and general adventuring i'm not scrapped for cash. also getting CNJ from 10 to 48 i've had to repair my stuff maybe 2 times. and one of those times was only because i had a SB party at level 40 and i died like 8 times in a row because i hadn't quite figured out how control my enmity. I wore the same set of gear from 15-30, and then upgraded at 30 and haven't' changed any of my gear (except rings/bracelets/neck) yet.
I really don't think repairs are a problem, especially since you don't need to repair that often. If it is really 'getting in your way' why don't you just repair right before you log off? you're fresh and ready next time you log on.
and even if you have 12 items that are being repaired all at once @5k you're looking at only 60k. if you can't afford 60k i think you have a whole different set of problems. between leves, SBing and selling materia, gathering/farming, gil is retarded easy to get.
Heck, your profile says you have THM50. shout in uldah and PL some newbs for gil. offer to help with AF runs for gil. charge pugs if you're doing primals. you're a THM those are almost always needed, and you can bet some people will pay for your services. Heck, i saw someone shouting to PL 40-50 for 100k a level. and people were joining in droves.
you just sound excessively lazy to me. just like in real life: if you goof off all day and don't try to make any money. . .You won't make any money.

That being said i would like it if repairs were scaled based on how much % you needed to repair. IE: 95% repair costs more than a 5% repair.
I find it a very minor annoyance because i generally repair all of my stuff at once if something is damaged. when i spend 5k for a 2% repair i'm a little miffed. but again, gil is so easy to get i'm over it by the time I walk away.
