I think this is the exact reason they decided not to show the world names. It is just as "name".

Pardon if I sound agitaded, but when I go to a restaurant, I don't expect to be told what to eat because it's for my own good, because the dish I order may be a problem. While I understand the intentions, I fail to understand how SE do not understand this is a definite move to displace a community already established and scatter it over a larger area.
Am I going to have to coordinate with the 200 on my friendslist (technically speaking ofc, I'm not that popular... yet...) to go to the same server as my LS is? No. most of their LS' will want to go to another server. And that's that for playing with those people on my friendslist ever again. The logical decision, in this case, would have been to keep the names of the servers that will be staying, allowing those already playing on it to chose to Stay, or leave for another. And what if the damn server "number" we chose gets flooded so fast our members/friends got locked out by the cap? Then the keeping of playing as a community argument died right there.
The issue would still linger on with those losing their server will, eventually, lose all this regardless. I guess the concept is to not make this unfair to them, and heaving it upon the Whole playerbase in order to minimise... Idk... Envy?
Understatement of the year. This will probably blow over, and I'll keep playing the game, but at least I got to voice my opinion. But if it's going to be a norm, that opinions of this insane magnitude are not heeded, I fear I will lose alot of people in my immediate virtual surroundings pretty darn quick.
That would make sense if it was just a simple transfer but its not there will be 8 servers worth of people without a home meaning that the 10 remaining servers will have to accomodate for 1 server plus a bunch(if not all) from another. Not just enough so that if everyone on Besaid flocked to server 1 its now locked. THAT would defeat the whole purpose of merging the servers.
I understand why this decision was made, but I still feel that this won't solve the problem you're trying to prevent. Why give us the option to choose our own servers if we can't even tell which servers we're moving to? Since when is choosing our server by name a bad thing?
And for those of you who are saying names don't matter, why are you even opposing visible names then? If names didn't matter, then they wouldn't affect your decision anyways. So what's the difference if they show them or not? For those that do care, it does matter. If you can't understand that, fine. But don't act like showing the names will cause people to pick favorites then contradict yourselves by saying server names make no difference.
I think numbers can pick favorites just as well as names. you have the ones going: i wanna be in server one cause its #1 and others like me going ooo 7 is my lucky number! maybe ill get lucky<3 Id like names, my day won't be ruined however if it doesn't become a option. it would be nice though ^^
Thank you for an official response. However the problem remains where people are going to flood the servers based on numbers.
1, 2 and 3 will obviously fill up fast and first. 7 will as well. Officially 10 is recommended for certain language groups... what difference does it make to give us our names except to give us back a pleasure we are crying out for?
In the end it's the same result but with happier people...
Ok...here's another story...a long time ago there were 3 Elementary Schools in my town. The oldest and least populated school was closed. Most of the kids went to 1 of the remaining 2 schools but some went to the other school.
There were the usual problems. Some kids hated the new school. Some kids wished they went to the other new school with their old friends. Some of the kids made fun of the "transfers" (they came from Alvin Dunn aka Alvin Dump), etc.
After not too long things settled down though and new friendships were formed. Kids played together at recess and hung out after school. One of my best friends through High School was one of those transfers.
And then a mere 1 year later none of it mattered because we all moved on to Junior High and were all mixed together anyway. Old friends were reunited and many new friends were made.
Is that analogy any better? ;>)
I'm sure this reference is going to go over some of your heads, but you act like Musset's Fantasio, tried of seeing the same people everyday needing new faces. This isn't what I want, I'm in a point in my life where my life does change rapidly, and isn't the most stable so I'd like to know I can find comfort in my gaming group. Hopefully the effort to put Selbina people on one server works but we picked Selbina because we wanted to make sure there would be FFXI players, if i wanted to play with just anyone I would of picked an rpg named server. Still think its lame FFXI got one server name, and XIII got 2 or 3
It's a valid story. But do you know the difference? School is mandatory. FFXIV is not. School is free and for learning. FF XIV cost money and is meant to be for enjoyment. You can't possibly make that kind of analogy when it comes to customers of a product, being bossed by the manufacturer because they don't trust in your judgement that you will use his product right.
If you are not already aware, a translation of Yoshi-P's response to our outcry has been posted.

It's great that we have been heard and he makes a good address of the issue. There is a chance they will change the current plans.
These were the options: Personally I like ② the best out of all of them... This way we can stay together and still give those people who want to go somewhere totally different the choice! ... for all the reasoning in the post this one just screams out at me as the obvious best choice.
①A + B⇒A World to merge with B World
②A + B - X ⇒A World to merge with B World, except people that would like to move are able to choose a different World
③A + B - C ⇒A World to merge with B World, except people that would like to move are able to choose to go to C World
④Prepare 10 Worlds, set a limit, and give everyone the power to move their characters to a World of their choice.
Yoshi said he announced it early to get feedback- this is one of the biggest concerns. We have the ability to say CHANGE YOUR PLAN INCLUDE NAMES. Thats kinda what the forum is for. Like I said- I have liked nearly every change up to this detail. I dont care if its old names, new names, heck ill even choose The Ocho. But I dont like making a decision I:
1. Can't Undo effectively
2. have no real knowledge as to what it actually is
I think it will take a very short amount of time for the two communities (in that case) to become one... after all in the end we are all here for similar reasons.
I do not think there would be a case of original community vs migrated community especially because you could move if you wanted.
They never become one. For example, in XI "Titan" was merged into "Phoenix". To this day, there are few Titan people who feel like their community experience is anywhere near as cohesive as it was when they were on their original server. They view themselves as people from Titan, playing on Phoenix.
Option 4 levels the playing field to where EVERYONE is contributing to a brand new community equally. Building a new community together is a bonding experience, one that simply can't be replicated with a traditional blanket merge.
Hmm, I feel that the Titan to Phoenix example is too different because they had a community based on years of work together.
FFXIV is young and constantly changing, and even then with option 2 you can move.
Honestly I would be fine with option 4 if they just revealed the server names whether they be old or new names, which has been my main point ^_^
I think in a few days we will hear a new announcement with the final word, after all Yoshi did say the reason they told us in advance is to see the reaction, and it seems the forums of all languages are leaning towards wanting a new option. We shall see ^_^
The way I see things going, people will follow their LS and LS leader from one world will ( more or less) all go to the same world in order to keep the community ( and the "multiple-LS" players).
So how is that different from having server A merged with server B Sidious?
Players from Besaid for example will end up in server 8 and populate it like mad ( besaid being a very big server), don't tell me there won't be a besaid community on this server and that anyone not from besaid joining this server will feel like belonging to "/insert new server name". My bet is when someone will try and join a LS in this new server, the first question he will have will not be " what is your main?" but " did you come from besaid?"
No offense to besaid players I just took besaid as example because it is a well known populated server.
If that happens then the people from high population servers get what they want-- to keep their community while the underdogs have to try and cope. I doubt it will be anywhere NEAR that uniform, however, as communities are a complex ecosystem that go far beyond individual linkshells and their interactions. Furthermore, linkshells and their constituant parts may not share the same vision for these transfers.
1indblum will be far from a carbon-copy of Lindblum. You can either accept this and work to create something new and better than what you had before, or you can wallow in the past. That's how I see it.
You people should all wear shirts that say "CHANGE SCARES ME!" so we know who you are lol
Those of you saying that the ENTIRE community is against this should realize that the majority of the people posting on here are against this, yet they still only represent a very small portion of the community as a whole. Most of the people that are fine with it aren't posting at all one way or the other. Its been proven that westerners post when something makes them unhappy but not when they are pleased. Best to keep that in mind when making claims that EVERYONE is against this.
Also, this is happening in march, which is only a few weeks away, so best deal with the fact that they aren't gonna change it and make plans accordingly. For those of you that are getting all weak in the knees about it, please keep in mind that we will be doing this again when the new servers come online. (at least, that was my impression.)
Well if they announce the New Server Names and the New Server Names are the top 10 Servers, that would change everything because then there is no need to close the top ten servers.
The only logical option then is to close the bottom 8 servers and allow those players to choose which World to go to.
Maybe bump up the population cap to 1500-2000 for the top 3 Worlds.
Heck, we really should just have 3 Worlds with 3333 population each.
This post highlights exactly why they have chosen to not name them right away. Naming them would simply divert people from the real purpose of a world transfer. People picking servers based on what the name is is the surest way to get servers that fill to capacity immediatly while leaving other servers (LIKE KASHAUN!) completely empty. I marvel at how easily most of you are upset by this. It must take nothing at all to upset many of you in real life. (CRY!!!! My popsicle melted!!!)
Given the number of threads that were made about the server merger topic in under 24 hours, I'd say it's a pretty big issue for SE right now. The last time we saw 1 thread top 500+ replies in this short a time span was when they made the billing announcements. And guess what, SE understood where a lot of people were coming from and decided to give us a discount. If people didn't complain about that, you can bet you'd be paying $13/mo to play right now.
Also, keep in mind that Yoshi-P himself said he decided to release the info early specifically to get player feedback on the matter.
I'd honestly be surprised if they didn't change something.
I'd just be happy knowing the server names. Not knowing them so as to prevent "popular" names from filling up is an extremely feeble excuse. As it stands now it's like telling your kids to pick 1, 2, 3 or 4 because they are going to the movies. Now tell me how not knowing the name is not extremely important. If you have boys and end up at The Barbie Movie I see some royally ticked off kids.
True, it definitly isn't out of the question that they could alter or change it. However, my initial synopsis stands. These forums still only represent a very small portion of the total player population. So if they were going to try to gauge an ACCURATE count of what option of the 4 given that the majority want, they would have to take another player poll. If they did that, it would eat up another 2 months, and frankly why even bother then since that would put us all only a few months away from the 2.0 launch when we will all be dealing with this again. Most of the people on my server that I talk to hardly ever read or check these forums, let alone respond. Also, do we have any idea how all the other nationalities feel about this, or are we all just assuming everyone hates this based on how North America is raging out?
I just think that the entire issue is way more comlicated that people realize, and that, no matter what they chose to do, they can't possibly make everyone happy.
LOl I get what you mean. But look how quickly popular named servers like Rabenastre and Besaid filled up while servers like mine (kashuan) stayed a freakin ghost town since release. I think people should spend less time worrying about names, and more time working together to communicate with one another in a way that gets the most people on the server they want together. While I love the analogy (because it was hilarious) this game isnt a movie. If it were, the title wouldnt change the content of the movie one bit. Everyone will still be playing the same game. I don't know, maybe I am wrong. I AM one of those people that thinks public schools should wear uniforms, and trust me, I know how popular THAT concept is with people. I am just an army guy at heart, and am all for making decisions based on substance rather than appearences.
Don't base your argument on false pretenses. There are a lot of posts, yes, but a TON of those posts are supportive of option 4 or apathetic either way.
As for releasing the server names: No. Not unless they are new server names. The current one have population and community-type connotations associated with them.
Beta had villain names for servers, initial release had town names, moving forward for 2.0 we need to flush out all of the past and start fresh with the server names. I suggest either going back to the beta names or using previous FF protagonist names.
IMO.
Well, that's because you're Lindblum. Of course you don't see it from the perspective of someone who has to make a new home in an already established ecosystem.Quote:
I don't really see why that would be a problem with this game.
Server name is important enough that SE mailed me a Right of Passage that lists Figaro as my server. Now if the server was shut down and wasn't available at all I could see not being able to be on it. But from player population polls there is a good chance that its going to be a still living world and I have a 10% chance to randomly pick the right one.
SE going to mail me an updated Right of Passage free of charge?
You didn't; you used the post count to give credence to the idea that this is a "big deal" to SE. Judging by your predisposition on the issue, I'd say the implication is obvious.
As I said before: A great deal of those posts are from people voicing positivity regarding the merges, or from people who don't care. It isn't a big deal to either of them. Inflating a thread (and as someone pointed out, probably a good portion of said posts are not from unique posters) does not necessarily imply that what people are talking about is a "big deal".
I never even got my Rite of Passage certificate. Sent away for it a month or two after the game came out and it never arrived. I wouldn't fret over it too much though. Perhaps they can make an online printable version of the passage thing allowing players to choose their own. Unlikely to happen though...
That's just how you took it then. I was just comparing this topic to the topic of billing a few months back.
Also, if this wasn't a huge deal for SE right now, why the hell would Yoshi-P type a giant letter explaining the reasons behind his decisions not even 24 hours after the initial announcement. He's never responded to anything that quickly and with that much detail.
Don't kid yourself. This is a big deal for SE right now.
I read that they recommend 10 for the german and french so i am wondering if any of been deemed for NA. really dont want to get stuck on a world where its all jp or gm fh... anyone heard anything?
