And the PC version is also around the corner. Maybe they have something scheduled by that time? I can only hope... the sooner the better though!
gibsme pls
I'm less concerned about the quantity of male outfits than the fact that nine times out of ten what we do get is some sort of pseudo-dress/tunic/long coat. It's rare that we get actually badass looking body slot items that aren't overly embellished or have large swathes of cloth dangling from them for no apparent reason.
This issue is worse for the caster classes/jobs in particular but they all suffer from too many dresses/robes/long coats. Another issues that some of the few body slot items that look great on guys are class/job locked. A good example is the Sky Pirate's Vest of Aiming. It still suffers from "have this dangling piece of cloth for no reason" syndrome but for the most part this top looks amazing on male characters... too bad only Bards and Machinists can wear it. There's all of maybe 10-15 chest slot items that any class/race/sex can use that isn't a dress. That's woefully inadequate as far as options go.
I want more cool body slot items for males like:
Wind Silk Coatee (Really nice and versatile)
Riviera Doublet (Not bad at all... would love a sleeveless version though!)
Scion Adventurer's Jacket (Nice but a bit too modern for my taste)
Miqo'te Vest (one of my fav's and I wish other races had something similar much like I wish I could use the Hyur hempen undershirt and starter chest (even if it is a tunic of sorts))
Scion Rogue's Jacket (From the mogstation Thancred Modish outfit, this top is great... except for the long strips of green cloth hanging from it and the fact that it can't be dyed)
Survival Shirt + variants (These are nice and basic tops. Would like to see more in this style, maybe a few fancier versions - but no dangling sashes and crap)
Falconer's Shirt (This shirt seems slightly oversized but isn't bad. I wouldn't mind see something in this style with rolled up sleeves and more form fitting)
Holy Rainbow Shirt of <insert role here> (This was a great piece because every role has a version of it. I could have done without the poofy sleeves but all in all not bad)
Vintage Doublet Vest (A very basic vest that shows up in the low levels, particularly among crafting/gathering gear)
Uraeus Body Armor (Not bad though the sleeve parts are kinda weird)
Archaeoskin Jackcoat of Gathering/Crafting (these jackets look nice and take dyes well)
And that's about the most of it for the things anyone who isn't a Bard, Ninja, Monk, or Samurai can use.
Trust that I have gone through the Market Board as a WHM many times trying to find alternatives. But this is about all there is... and that certainly isn't "plenty" in my opinion.
Probably one of the issues that I have with my male characters is variety when it comes to clothing.
I just wanted to say, to the people who say the forum is a minority... that really isn't true. Take a look at the Views count on this thread. It's at 11,213. I recently found out that one person can't give a thread multiple views.. You will only count as one(Tested this)
So, 11,213 unique individuals have at the very least, entered this thread. Just putting it out there!
Show Your Miqo'te records show that 2,366,717 unique individuals have visited that thread since it's creation in 2013
I suppose it all wraps around to - if they make more male outfits... eventually we won't have a dress for casters and healers.
I support gender unlocking all glams for those that want them, even though I will never in a million years ever put a dress on my character. It's not my aesthetic but I think it's stupid to restrict those who do.
And they should honestly unlock job gear (except artifact) to be usable by all jobs. I love playing RDM/WHM/AST, but I love striking/aiming sets the most. The Sky Pirate Jacket of Striking is one of my favorite tops in the game, but I don't want to have to play MNK or SAM to use it in battle. If I could have that on my RDM, I could finally switch out of the Augmented Shire Coat I have been wearing for 9 months now because there is literally no other option I want (except Hannish shirt but... ya know. I'm poor).
I always feel really silly when my girl friends show off their new glamours and I show up like, "Still wearing the Shire coat! yaaaaaaaaay"
I've managed to put together a small wardrobe of outfits I cycle through, but the selection is just so limited if you don't want to wear a dress/robe/tunic/longcoat. Gender specific outfits aren't even the issue for me, its the fact that the lion's share of the body slot items in the game are some form of pseudo-dress, even for tanks.
I would like to have more body slot options for "all classes" that are NOT dresses, robes, tunics or long coats. Casters, especially, are saddled with an inordinate amount of them and there's only a handful of non-pseudo-dress options to choose from. Male characters in particular should have more body slot options that aren't dresses.
Just going from in game models, I'd like to see these proliferated as level 1 "all classes" body slot options:
Gyuki Leather Jacket

Gryphonskin Jerkin:

Cotton Shirt

Ruby Cotton Gambison:

Sky Pirate's Vest of Aiming:

These are only a few examples of a style we need to see more of. We have a huge assortment of dresses/robes/longcoats/tunics but a noticeable lack of more form fitting body slot options that don't go below the waste and aren't practically bare chested. We need more of the latter that all classes can use.
Now while this one isn't a body slot option, this particular glove option provides a unique way to customize a body slot option:
Eikon Leather Armguards of Casting:

Imagine if we had something like those gloves but it put the "rolled up sleeve/floaty" on both sides instead of a long glove on one. It can really change how a top looks. Here's an example:
Before: and After:

Being able to make something "short" or "rolled up" sleeves can really change the look of a top and add a measure of variety. Ideally I'd prefer it to be an option like helmet visors that you can click on or off so I can use another glove option, but this way is a simple method of getting the option without requiring new code or UI additions.
Ruby Cotton Gambison should get alternate versions without all of the junk attached too, like the Survival Shirt.
I wish we got more fancy/formal stuff, like buttoned up shirts with vests, maybe with a suit. Trenchcoats, peacoats etc.
The closest to something I want for this character is the Ala Mhigan crafting top, but it's crafters-only and it has that weird, long sash that looks inflated. I hope they make an alternative that doesn't have those. :(
Suits are actually one of the things we do have access to, even if they all look very close to each other. The wedding suit, the Best Man suit (which is unisex...), and the butler outfit (which is a promotional item...) - but they still exist. Losing the jacket is something I WOULD like to see, though.
That said, isn't there something similar locked behind MGP?
We do have the (sleeve-dyeable) riviera doublet (the vampire vest of last halloween is a very similar model with the vest part dyeable) and the (unisex) gambler's coat in GS, the manderville coatee and associated might count at a stretch, and the plague bringer/doctor/duelist tier sets- all of which are unisex. That being said, I wouldn't mind a nice form-fitting vest and rolled shirtsleeves like the ala mhigan doublet of crafting, without the sash and belts. :') They've already done models of other popular outfits, even if they did lock it to gatherer/crafter.
I'd love to see something like this:

I think it'd be pretty great if we ended up seeing more outfits designed after those worn by various Final Fantasy characters - and not just the protagonists, either. Often the antagonists have better fashion sense than some of the protagonists, after all. ;)
Yeah, Villians in JRPG tend to look alot better, fashion wise. I would love have Kuja's hairstyle and outfit, would buy a Fantasia and play a Hyur or Miqote so fast.

I have just started playing Star Ocean 4 HD and having this character outfit and hairstyle would look good on FFXIV males aswell.

I think we're going to get an outfit like Kuja's at some point.
Me too. SMNs get outfits that are a little similar, but I dislike the mini skirt look on them and I'm not hugely partial to SMN. Kuja's lower outfit is way better. I also wish BLM used orbs like that instead of a staff. ;.; Perhaps if/when they add the Mystic or Orator, it will use something like them.

I am genuinely surprised you would pick Kuja as a wanted example as male-related outfits – must be the metal cod-piece! But hey, to each their own. Personally I'd prefer the Kefka look: he's had androgynous clown drag down since '94 - the OG of dress-up.
I wish male caster gear looked less like dresses q_q
I wish we got less stuff with kilts. Aesthetics aside, I dislike feeling the breeze when playing as DRG or RDM p.p
I'm both looking forward to it, and a little worried. As much as I like the healer winner, or at least the top, they changed the male version, predictably, in ways I was unhappy with.
I want to believe the male version of the caster contest set will still show off our sexy thighs, but the chances just don't feel good to me.
There is a lot of stuff that isn't "dress" like, and more in the realm of coats or tunics, it's just that it doesn't always look great, or it is limited in variety, so won't fit a particular look. Generally, this game is very "dressy" though across different jobs and it's not limited to caster gear. They could perhaps alternate a bit more.
Just throwing this out there, looking at this dilemma from the flip side, female charas are missing out on some nice pants. IIRC the new BRD AF pants become skirts and a garter, and I'd have loved the proper pants on my alt :< alas, it is not possible
It would be a huge disappointment if they toned the male version down since IIRC the original drawing was one of the handful which used a guy as the model in the first place. It was definitely the best of all of the contest winners as-is.
My BRD main friend was so annoyed about that exact same issue. She wanted proper pants (I like the pants too, shame they're BRD only and I never use it).
It's a sad day when guys have to beg to show more skin, really. Why do we have to beg for cool looking gear that shows our thighs when people can already run around in nothing but sandals and leopard print banana hammocks?
I will also never not be annoyed that we got the fugliest pants ever for the healer contest winner- I was stoked about the winning design and like the overall aesthetic of the set, but holy crap did guys get shafted hard with the outfit that won the prize. After playing second fiddle to females for so long we better get the mage gear as close as they can make it to the concept. We've already been neglected long enough just because SE's designers are too insecure to design to show off the male body with the same effort and apparent joy they have for designing revealing female outfits.
A bit of a tangent here, a useful one albeit in trying to understand why SE does the things they do. I always knew the japanese culture favored cuteness but still...
https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/w...al_Events#2013
That's the page for seasonal events. If you start from the bottom and check out each promo artwork...that's right: no males to be found at all. Only somewhere up in the 2015 Valentione event you have guys prominently featured in the artwork (I say prominent not because they're still in the back but you can see them clearly lol).
I've played various mmos and some have at least tried to use both genders at times in their promo artwork for events but I was pretty speechless. Suffice to say I have very little expectancy when it comes to glam fairness in the future. Maybe 4.2 can prove me wrong.
That was exactly my thought. I was so excited to see those pants, and hopeful they'd be modeled faithfully for males because the Yafaemi tank and Dragoon pants are very similar, and don't have a different male/female model. I've been wanting pants like them that I can wear on my main class for eons, now, but while there are MANY like that in the game, most of them change into plain slacks for male characters, and the other two or three are tank-only gear...I haven't been so disappointed in a gear set since I tried on the Arachne Culottes of Healing...
Different story with FFXI. Sometimes they don't even show the playable races (sometimes Moogles, Chocobos or even monsters).
Naturally, my favourites are the ones that include Galka. Even if they may end up as part of the background.
It is really annoying how they keep ignoring male characters and male glamours overall. They said they will do something about it yet I still see nothing. As patches come and go and time passes I somehow find less and less interesting male focused outfits in game let alone special male NPC outfits in Mog shop. They should really start implementing more male focused glamours in game via crafting. Crafting is a bit useless in this game and glamours items via crafting are left pretty limited. If we can't use crafting to produce high end gear in game then we should be getting glamour sets instead which do not affect gameplay balance.
The best thing we can do is continue to be vocal but constructive about the issue. When next we see a relevant Q&A session we should band together and upvote posts relating to the issue to try and get the message across more firmly.
As for female stuff selling better? That has always been a bit of a myth. Multiple players investing in female characters have come forward within this thread and others to state that if it weren't for the lack of male glamours they'd be playing a male character instead.
I honestly think Lyses' outfit should be unisex, anyway :/
I can understand the fear for the caster winning outfit...the art looks really cool and I kinda fear for the ingame version of it for both sides..because we females often need to look cute or lose the nice pants..its not like all girls wants to wear dresses all day long. >_>
Still remain skeptic if this ever changes especially after reading an interview on reddit with Soken (?) and someone else where they said that Lakshimi looked quite different from her current version because they wanted to make her look more Indian. (Kinda like an Indian goddess) Yet Yoshida came along and said that she was not cute enough thus we got the current version..if not even a snake lady from a beast tribe is allowed to be "not cute" then I really question if we get less cute stuff for females or even more different stuff for the males in the future..
As long as this problem exist, especially for the male characters I will raise my voice d^^b.
