How the actual system, engine and server works is of no relevance here at all. Only the fact that these things are used as excuses.
And I see them as that, excuses, as I do not believe them to be true in nearly any of the cases. Because, as I said, I don't believe that a company that can afford proprietary engines would be so incompetent to limit themselves at every single step (alright, that's an exaggeration) in an ongoing project.
