How about an option on which name you want displayed over your head? But when some one checks you they see your full name in chat log. for example my name is Enthy Paradox but i just want the name Enthy Shown.

Would still cause too much congestion. Not your name, but those who have a more common name in place such as real names or previous FF based character names such as myself.
optional surnames? please no. so there's me, Gun Anam, and another person called just Gun who decided not to use a surname.
person types /tell Gun Anam hello
Who gets the message? There needs to be a standard. It's simple. Everyone has 2 names, everyone can see 2 names for other people, don't change things that work.
I like surnames. It makes people think a little more about their name and you get to see a lot of creative names, for example, Belgian Rofl. Thankfully, because of surnames, we can see that it's not just any old Belgian being a troll, it's someone imaginatively named Belgian Rofl.
Gun Anam,
meaning Without Soul (ie. Soulless), not just Without.
meh just a thought q(' _ .)p
hmm maybe it's probably been said before~ but at this point i don't really think it's possible to remove surnames (since there are already multiple people with the same first name in my server)~ or to have it be an option because of Gun_Anam said~ but i would totally be down for the following:
- ability to hide surnames
- be able to click on a person directly and send them a tell (if you can now, how do you do it??)
I like my full name. Two names and better then one.
Actually I'm going to go ahead and use your own term against you. Troll. Aren't you basically just being a troll by talking off subject without coming up with a conclussion on how to state a couple points about how this thread could be of good use? Example: My talk of search function being the true problem. Not surnames. Or Gun Anam's post about how will that affect the community if everyone has to revert back to a single name. Mikan's suggestion that they should allow you to click on the person and be able to click a command to send an automatic tell.
All these idea's are helping this discussion in one way or the other. Seems to me that if anyone is trolling on about nothing, it would be you. Stop being a troll, Llan Hana. Post some sort of counter rebuttal with points of concept. If not, shut the hell up.
Gun Anam I love the name by the way. Using words to describe a meaning of relation to the name. I really wish I could use my Xbox Live Gamertag of Fortune Of Terror which means a prediction of fear......But it's three words instead of two. Makes me want to cry or wish I could include "Of" in there completely independent somehow.
what would alleviate a lot of the problems is when you type
/tell firs-
a little dropdown would appear filling out matches for names that are
A) on your friends list
B) in your area
C) have recently said something in your chat log.
D) have sent you a tell
(, obviously with the more of the name you type out the more exact it will be.)
then you would click the appropriate name and it would
1) give that name priority for subsequent tells
2)replace /tell firs- with /tell firstname lastname
Yes. Another great idea to help with all the name confusion.
i like my full name "Chibino Boukensha" which in simple terms it means "little adventurer" and it goes well with my lalafell. since Chibi also has multiple meanings which is usually used to reference kids. so i guess my name can literary mean "Small Adventurer"
chibi
(n) (1) (uk) (sens) small child; pipsqueak; small fry; small, cute versions of manga, anime, etc. characters, typically with oversized heads; (2) (vulg) short person; midget; dwarf; (3) small animal; runt; (pref) (4) worn down (pencil, etc.)
no*
(prt) indicates possessive among other uses
boukensha
(n) adventurer
The point is that nobody else does.
That is a complete lie. There are a lot of people in this thread right now who either speak against your forum, or list an idea to help clear the air so the problem you have can easily be fixed.
I would say it is a safe bet that there are more people in this thread who side with me about keeping the surname than people who side with you.
My name does not fit within the atmosphere of Eorzea because requiring everyone to walk around with First and Last names hovering over their head is a stupid idea to begin with. Since it's virtually impossible to make a powerful and memorable sounding name when surnames are required, I decided to rebel against the machine. Belgian Rofl is a retarded name, just like 99% of the rest of the names in FFXIV.
I had a list 20+ names I wanted to use, and names I would use if others were picked. They were all great names, and they were all Single names. I wanted to quasi role play, but SE ruined that for us all.
Kimahri, you read my post out of context. It was in response to the post directly above it. The guy said how he likes his name "Chibino Boukensha", and then went on to explain what it means. That's great that he likes it, but nobody else will even remember it unless they are in the same linkshell.
When I played FFXI in Asura, I developed some really cool and efficient XP parties and strategies (for early ToAU days). I was very frequently getting /tells because #1, people loved the XP i would get them, and #2, my name stood out and was easy to remember..
Nobody's gonna remember "Chibino Boukensha" unless they write it down...
You forgot the number one rule. This game is to be enjoyed by not one, but every other person available to play. It is their right to name their character whatever they like. Even though I may not remember Chibino Boukensha, I still can not take his/her right to name themself. The people in direct contact and personal friendship over will remember who Chibino is. He/She doesn't need anyone other than who she deems friends to know who he/she is.
Another story you mentioned was that you were popular back on your server to make great XP parties? The simple ease of your name didn't ring in their ears as to why they talked to you, it was what you were good at that made them remember who you were. On the Siren server from whence I came I can clearly remember Quizatsa and how he spelled it simply because he was one of the best damn crafters I've ever known. Also he was one of the wealthiest. When he retired he personally presented me with 1,000,000 gil as a simple act of generousity. He will always be remembered for this reason. Another person would be Avesta: The Red Mage. He was known simply because he was great at doing an awful lot of endgame stuff by himself.
I will not stand here any longer and tell you you're wrong. You are entitled to your opinion, but I strongly disagree to your opinion. It is not our fault you hate Belgian Rofl as your FFXIV name. I love the fact I was able to be the first person on the Besaid server to get Kimahri Ronso. I mean what are the odds? On that server alone? The only thing I can tell you is that if you don't like your name then to change it to something you do like. How about Belgium Waffle? That one taken?
Right now the problem I see with this is that there is really no good ways to directly connect a way to search for these people on the game right now when you only have a partial of the name. If we can change this then maybe you'll come into more ease of your surname.
My only complaint with surnames is that after using just the name "Desirai" for 8 years, I had to quickly come up with a last name for her just for this game. And it was ohso imaginative. Koneko. {JApanese for Kitten}
My second complaint (I lied in the first paragraph) is yes, typing out peoples' names.
Of course, if you have the person selected, all you have to do is type /t <t> message and it will send them a tell. :) then ctrl R.
Maybe a toggle is in order, it'd be good for privacy when you dont want unwanted tells
you are aware that there are tools you can employ to make two names sound more memorable right? Things like alliteration. Rhymes, approximate Rhymes. one name that confers a title and a regular name. Hell even YOUR name is difficult to forget because its funny to those who get the joke.
Well thats certainly not being kind to your server mates, yes some people are uncreative, yes some people go overboard and make the name a confusing mess. but not much of that would change if they only had one name, it would probably be worse since their first choice would be taken.
Wait so hold up, instead of bending the two names around to fit into your quasi RP you picked one that was completely unthematic? Whaaaaaaaaaaaat whyyy would you dooooo thaaaat.
Addendum: Oh no Martin Luther King Jr has four names, what do? cannot deal.
Hey, Nephera. Not to go off topic here, but how in the hell do you make those signature cards?
i would like to KEEP surnames, if they were to remove surnames, thn my current name would not sound good...and even if they let u chnagename.. thn u gotta go thru trouble of picking a new name, contacting ur friends to let thm know this is ur name and ur not a random person. etc etc...
i played ffxi and i liked my name.. it was Synapse, however it was dull, but my current name has more punch to it.. Synaptic Striker...and hi to those who know me -_-;(i been found!)
And how do I put the signature card on the profile?
These!
Despite him being a troll, I like Belgian Rofl, made me laugh the first few times I saw it.
I enjoy the surname system as is, in every other game out there on the interwebz I had to distort my name in many ways from KeithDragoon, Keithdragoon, Keith_Dragoon KeithD(short name onry :<) and finally one of the VERY few games to allow me to be Keith Dragoon and it even treats it as a surnames just makes me all giddy.
In games where i got to space I was called out by NPCs by my full name but in XIV my name is acknowledged as Keith and in more formal settings I am Keith Dragoon. Its perfect so no to removing, yes to /tell tweakage!
Thank you very much, Nephera.
I like my Surname. Without the 'Shadowheart' I am just plain ol Reika. THATS BORING! I am still waiting for the true Dark Knight class to give my characters full name purpose...
I had the hardest time when I picked out my name. I wanted something similar to my FFXI name (pusiwillow) but didn't want to go as Pusi Willow... either I'd get banned or I'd be called Pusi all the time >.>
So I had to go with Neko Yanagi, which is Japanese for Pussywillow. I hate it. I wish I could go back and change it. Too Many damn Neko's in the game.... If there weren't Surnames, I wouldn't have had that problem. But if they were to take it away, I'd just be Neko, along with 200 other characters on my server lol.
I find first and last names unique and i have no trouble with it whatsoever
so there ^^
Personaly I love surnames as they are
In the end I went with TheVedis Foxbat
At first I wanterd to just be "The Vedis" but that woulda sounded a bit odd as an actual name....so I condensed Thevedis into 1 name(sure its meant to be read as seperate words, but could also be read as a single word too) and went with Foxbat as a last name, as a tribute to the greatest supervillian of all time!
as far as abuse in names go, you can have 1, 2 even 10 word names, and people willk be dumb about them so thats never an excuse for why you shouldnt have it one way or the other(and coming from the op who has ROFL as his name, thats just hilarious to hear, but you cant expect anything less from that guy)
The best middle ground is for SE to make Surnames optional.
I really like the surnames. It adds more depth to naming your character and it helps to reduce people having too similar of names like 100 people with a variation of Cloudstrife or Sephiroth now its easily distinguishable by their surname (or first name sometimes in this setup). I mean it is still possible to have similar names, but there is a greatly decreased chance even if you see people with the goal of attempting to copy player names.
I agree that surnames should be an option.
You can target the person you wanna send /tell to her/him then type:
/tell <t> Hello
<t> <<< this will show her/his name without needing to type it by yourself.
Since they're already in the game, they shouldn't take them off
If they were optional, it would look kinda weird seeing a player with one name and another player with a first and last name
