I was thinking the same thing! Totally awesome. +w+

Great. Both SE and Powerman 5000 made a statement on the subject. GMs should close this thread.
Just as the original FB post, it'll only invite even more SE fanboys and girls telling Powerman 5000 that "he should be grateful for the flattery" and a fool that was better to back off since he was "irrelevant" now. >____> Honestly, the outright insults for this guy...
If you were a musician in a similar position, you would want to protect what you feel is your work. Doesn't matter current fame. Not gonna say who was right or wrong on the subject, but the outcry of fans who were using insulting him was a little not to my taste.
I'm with the poster who is thankful that the Powerman guy is taking flak for this.
Seriously, he should know better. He's supposedly a musician, and these pieces are clearly not copies of each other. And then he blabbed about it on social media.
Americans have way too much tolerance for stupidity.
Just a prank bro.
They literally sound nothing alike. And I'm a musician.
Listened again, and I just don't hear the similarity, other than both sounding like they're from the same genre. I would never think one was copied from the other.Quote:
Those two are very similar sounding at the start. Honestly, I'm baffled how people CAN'T hear it. o.o??
Random Question to anyone who knows Final Fantasy VI well
I noticed in the fiend's Phase 1 theme you can hear a bit of Final Fantasy VI's battle theme just before it loops again was this always in the original track in Final Fantasy VI when you fight the Ultima Weapon?
When I listened to them side by side, I heard two different songs, however, whoever is singing the song is amazing and sounds just like the other lead singer, that's really the biggest thing I heared... loved both songs... Got to get this one on the soundtrack :) so good. :)
I am not surprised in the slightest. But being fair, Powerman 5000 does not think it's a blind accusation either. Being given a verbal backhand is also very different than calling someone's band irrelevant and (from the perspective of Powerman 500 now) telling them they should be grateful to have their work stolen.
I don't mind when people decide to stick up for their idols. But the personal digs were childish and only reflected poorly upon our community. Not that we need any help in that respect either. Forum community has always been a bit iffy. :p
I think this thread can be closed now, seeing as Powerman 5000 says they are not going to file a lawsuit and there's nothing for anyone else to add here. :-B
Issues:
1) No one said they should be grateful to have their work stolen.. People said at best, that they should be grateful it pays homage to the past, at best. People have made it very clear they do not feel like it is a ripoff. The fact that you and the band used that terminology - "Theft" - is the big part of the issue. No one said stealing is ok. That's part of the victim narrative you are trying to create.
2) Even if Powerman 5000 does think it's theft; there are more mature ways to go about it. They basically went about it like a child, shouting and crying that the big bad bully came and took their toy. In reality, he just pulled a toy from the toybox and appearantly the child thought all of them belonged to him.
You say that the personal digs are immature, but I do not see either side (Especially with how you defend them) to be completely innocent in this.
And it was established that tributes and homages need to have a nod to the original to truly be homages. As that wasn't done, in the eyes of Powerman 5000, it felt like his work was being stolen.
Yes, but as I wrote it every time from the perspective of how Powerman 5000 felt, it doesn't matter what other people thought. Read that again now, I was talking from the perspective of what Powerman 5000 felt. People are still entitled to how they feel, no matter if they are wrong or right. I am not framing any victim narrative here. Only pointing out that our side of it handled it just as poorly.
Of that we are agree. But I imagine he didn't linger over his FB post before hitting the submit button. There ARE more mature ways to go about it, but his approach really was never under debate. Everyone thought it was a bit harsh. I did not defend his original statement and the manner in which it was made. Only recognized his feelings on the subject.
We must be reading this in two different voices then. How I'm defending them is merely letting my distaste for how our side handled it be known. Neither side IS completely innocent here, but as I'm not on a Powerman 5000 forum and seeing that conversation, I can't exactly shake my finger at them now, can I?
Errr.. I'm sorry, when I first heard it, I immediately was confused and thought "Did SE hire Powerman 5000 to record an homage to 'When Worlds Collide' for this game?
So, I'm guessing that the 'people who made it very clear they do not feel like it is a ripoff' haven't listened to a lot of Powerman 5000 and especially weren't very aware of that song. I'm betting many of them had never even heard of the song before this came up, so they went and listened to a band they'd never heard of and just decided 'nah, it's not a ripoff.'
Powerman 5000 was 100% justified in feeling like his music and style may have been stolen. There are parts of it that sound almost exactly the same, even if the lyrics are different. Sure, he probably could have responded better, but a better response could have included a lawsuit, so there's that.
Final Fantasy VI came out 1994 and when world collide came out 1999 right. the music that use for sephirot use part orignal ffvi music so if anyone could argue powerman 5000 riped off square enix on they ffvi sound track
I love how people are saying that because Powerman is no longer relevant it's okay to steal music
Really nice logic white knights. Brb gonna copy Moonlight Sonata and bank on it hasn't been relevant for 200 years I should be okay right? Beethoven wont sue will he?
Just to clarify on neither side of who ripped of who
<<NO ONE HAS SAID STEALING IS OK>>
This is part of the victim narrative that people who defend Powerman 5000 attempt to use. They attempt to call it theft in a misguided effort to try and validate their point, and is a major point of what creates so much tension between the two sides.
Only phase 1 uses the FFVI track, it's the phase 2 that's the major focus point of contraversy.
People are free to voice their opinions as they see fit, it is up to the mods to close a thread when the topic becomes irrelevant and/or derailed Mimi. If you see someone flaming someone else or any other rule breaking, just use the report function. This thread is based on the similarity of the two songs, not necessarily the actions between SE and Powerman 5000. Although most of the discussion has been about the two and future comments will be based upon what has already been discussed. So I'm not against the thread being closed mind you. It may even die out.
I think a large amount of the backlash re: pm5k is the neediness of that band, tbh.
Their claims to fame have been really dubious - they're generally considered a one-hit wonder in the alternative music scene, whether you're into industrial or not. They have been considered a rip-off of KMFDM (German) NIN (American) and Pierott (Japanese) at varying points in their career and they're still riding a song they released 17 years ago to reaaaaaaaaaaaaally small venues... which is pretty shameful, imo. Nothing's worse than a band that rides old stuff to the ground because they haven't the creativity to come out with something new but like money too much to disband.
Even back in the day their whole claim to fame was "hey, our singer's Rob Zombie's brother, pay attention to us!" over anything else... and personally, I find it laughable that on the same facebook page the allegation is made on, PM5K butchered Space Oddity by David Bowie, and posted side-by-side pictures of how much the singer looks like some random guy from Naruto. Really laughable.
Actually even in this thread I've seen some people who say Powerman should be grateful SE are making them relevant again, which is essentially saying, people should be ok with theft because they are relevant again.
Again, I do not care what happens in this situation, i do not care for the band (singer?) either. But to say some people in this thread aren't saying stealing is ok in this case is a flat out lie.
I may have turned deaf, but the only similiarity, that is not because of the genre, I find in the two pieces is the singer's voice when they're singing low, combined with the fact that both songs start with "What is it". After the first 15 seconds or so, any similiarity disappears, until you again come to a part with low singing that starts with "What is it" that again lasts about 15 seconds.
1.imo the only problem similarity wise is the vocals in both. Sound very similar though the FF song is a tad deeper. 2. you play both songs at the same time correctly, you get something amazing :)
What kinda mental gymnastics do you have to do to say that they should be grateful that SE made them relevant (With a similar style / genre of music song) is the same as stealing? The issue is, people are doing this wierd set of pre-conclusions that fit their own narrative to come to these conclusions.
No one said, "You shoudl be glad to have your content stolen." There is no sampling in this, there isn't a direct lift of the song, heck - the songs are a little similar out the gate but that's really about it.
Stop with these mental gymnastics and putting words in people's mouths.
Want a good video that demonstrates an example of theft? There's a video from GradeAUnderA about reaction channels about a year ago. That's a good example of theft.

This whole thread is pointless, because no music was ripped off/stolen/whatever. Had music been stolen, then that wouldn't be OK. But it seems rather arbitrary to discuss this on a forum about FFXIV.
Thank you for bringing up this topic and your discussion about it. Since the discussion has reached a resolution, we will be closing the thread at this time.
