gun blade check, gun halberd check, gun bow che.... wait what?!?! isnt the idea to mix a ranged weapon with a melee weapon, not two ranged weapons!

Never said they weren't but they look cool in the context of monster hunter. I brought them up to have a bit of a poke at those that seem to think everything that comes out of azeroth is the biggest and most expressive example of over the top items.
Personally I like the look of the Ifrit weapons. Some more then others. But there are some limits as to how far I and some others think they should push the line. For me these are at the boundary, for some there passed that point.
i see nothing wrong with these weapons at all, not in art style or believability, the only thing i see is the pug weapon is alittle big. thats it. i dont see any boundaries being pushed nor crossing any line. it fits fine in the game, and it just goes to show that the game will be alot more epic then what we have already, which is natural game progression. if it didnt get more interesting later in the game, who would actually play it? so whats the problem? these weapons are awesome and i cant wait to get them and use them
That's the Vampire class in Forsaken World. (A chinese mmo)
Those giant crosses are actually weapons that they carry around on their back. Their clothing gets.... well...

I mean I'm all for attractive clothing but they go a little bit too far into the brothel...
oh and here's what a Dwarf gunner looks like:

Cute but just a teenie bit too extravagant.
I can complain about features and issues all day but when it comes to art direction, just have to respect it and live with it.
AAAAAAAAAMGG!! That is so cuteeeeeeee!!
...........
Thank God.
Holy sweater-puppies!
I dont really have any complaints about the weapons other than they seem a little too samey with one another but other than that they are decent enough for what they are. I'll start to worry when i see a roegadyn running by in neon green glowing armour.... lol
OMG REINHEART DONT SHOW BETELGEUZAH ALL THIS FINAL FANTASY STYLE ARMOR/WEAPONS THEY DONT BELONG IN FF14!!!
Man FF10 really had great weapon designs. I dont understand how some of these numbskulls think plain bland chainmail is awesome to look at. I mean i just log into my account everyday to look at this awesome vintage haubergeon that while somewhat well done is about as great as cinnamon toast w/o the cinnamon. These Ifrit weapons are a good step in the right direction.
I actually liked all of them except THM and PUG.
Pug looked....dumb.
and THM looked like he was holding a glowing dildo.
It looks like I'm going to be the only PUG in the game actively using the Ifrit weapons then, hooray :D
hell yeah! id imagine it like a subdued Rabinastre or something.Quote:
A steam punk city on another continent - with appropriate clothes would be nice
I hate the new Ifrit weapons. I wish they were more creative yet conservative like the weapons u posted at http://goo.gl/plGYR Those would be kool weapon styles without being Korean like the new ifrit stuff.
*facedesks*
THEY'RE
NOT
KOREAN!
And the weapons you just linked look JUST as elaborate as the ifrit weapons! you do know the blue sword on the right in that pic glows and ripples like water don't you? Geez!
Isn't it dumb how everyone was screaming that FFXIV didn't feel like a Final Fantasy game, and then when SE put in weaponry that's typical of the weaponry in Final Fantasy games of the past everyone complains?
I mean, cloud's buster sword, squalls gunblade, tidus's brotherhood sword, aurons swords in general, most of the weaponry in ff13, and ffx-2, and some of the ones in ff12, and ff9, take a look at the ultima weapon and try to say elaborate shining weaponry isn't an FF weapon.
You all wanted FFXIV to feel like an FF game, now SE are putting in things to make it like an FF game, if you didn't want it to be an FF game then you should have gone asking for Medievil Fantasy instead.
seeing as i work w/ authentic KOREANs rofl im gonna have to ask them to deciepher wtf these people keep claiming to be Korean on these forums lol. God i hope im not wearing KOREAN underwear or eating w/ KOREAN forks/knifes/sporks i just cant handle all this KOREAN in my life. Someone please get the KOREAN outa me.
If by KOREAN u mean great artistic ability/lisc. and a endless imagination then sure FILL ME UP W/ KOREAN PLEASE and make it premium. If u peoples want plain-jane armor and weapons nerd you up some and play in the backyard with your friends.
Omg, lol
That blue one I think is Tidus's weapon from FFX and it is indeed much more elaborate or equivalent of the ifrit weapons :P You just cant see it as well because they are low res.
Here is a better picture of the same sword you posted :P

and a video...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oBoackm3uRI
at this point, both the for and against camp have pretty much devolved into the equivalence of competing in the special Olympics, and we all know what that means :P
for those who likes it, great, enjoy it, don't let the giant horns bury you alive.
for those who don't like it, too bad, SE ain't gonna change it at this point, just hope that they aren't gonna make every weapon like that from now.
stop trying to pass off your preference as if it's the universal truth, it's disgusting.
It's like going:
Sorry Sailor Mars but your bow is too elaborate and glowey, you are now korean
Sorry Reimi from star Ocean but your bow just looks too awesome, you are now korean
Sorry He-man but your sword is to artistic and glowey, you are now korean
Sorry Imperial Chaplain and Chaos Warrior, you're both korean as well apparently for wielding those weapons
Get the picture?
Give someone something cool to look forward to and someone complains about it...

Why are we comparing art styles of different games by different artists?
While in certain circumstances we'd like to think the customer is always right, please do keep in mind that Square (SE) has been making video games for years; their artists have designed hundreds, if not thousands, of weapons for a variety of environments. I'm almost certain that their creative team have access to the references used in previous games and photographs of swords spanning the history of mankind. "Realistic" and "Fantasy" seems to be about the extent to which the non-professional can categorize weapon designs. If you feel your personal experience at weapon design holds more weight than the combined talent of the entire creative team at SE, please do share in detail how you would make things better.
We have no idea how much time they spend on designing each weapon. The countless drafts, edits and discussions held for the visual appearance of every item made for the game. It's not like there's some chump with an artistic ego churning out these things by themselves in a cubicle somewhere. "Look what I made! In the game in goes..."
Is Night Vision Top Hat too Korean?
I vote we implement Night Vision Top Hat.
I am just chiming in with the crowd that thinks these are all ugly.
Sure, i see where they are coming from. And, from an execution stand point, I think they are very well executed. I also think the amount of glow is just right. I just do not like the way they look. Every one of them looks... blunt, dull, not sharp. Also, they all look heavy, unbalanced, unwieldy, and just all around unusable.
I realize that Could's blade in FF7 was over sized as well. Then again, silk button down shirts were in style during that time. And MC Hammer pants were just heading out of style. Times change, and so do consumer tastes. Everyone linking up weapons from the past is not considering this. At one point in time, huge, gawdy[sp], weapons were actually in style. The "in" thing right now is to design weapons with flare, but yet still seem like they would function well (unless the overall design of the game is over the top fantasy). By every measure, these designs just fail that test.
Side Rant:
And for goodness sake, i wish they would give the curved blades a rest. There are so many other types of blades out there to choose from as a reference. Despite better stats, I didnt even attempt to go for the Aeolian Scimitar. While this is a design that was actually used as a blade at one point in time. I believe it is one of the ugliest.
I can only guess that this is because I only see sword motions which swing instead of stab. So, that limits the blade choices to use as a reference. For example, using a slashing motion with a rapier just looks goofy. For the FFXI guys, compare the Ridil attack animations to the Joyeuse. They are the same, but the joyeuse is a rapier (a stabbing weapon by design). A rapier just doesnt look natural with a slashing attack motion. Is it too much work to add attack motions based on weapons? I dunno, but Demon Souls and Dark Souls does it.
I happen to love every weapon they are coming out with, aside from the THM weapon.
Ok you have the 1st valid point for the general meh on both sides of the argument.. It could be a lot worse.
I know were getting the weapons we have seen I'd prefer more refind and stylish weapons but well...
The only reason I'm still commenting on this is in the hope that we can get the Devs to to look at other recent FF titles and take inspiration from them, and find a better way of giving people that OMG EPIC gear, but having it look stylish and fit in with the style of the world we have now without it having just another generic mmo look wow has pushed on us..
I don't see why people are freaking out. I mean, look at the stuff in the Artifacts gear picture. None of that stuff looks way over the top and chances are that gear will be the best of the best when it comes out..
Last Comment: Heres hoping the sword has the same stats as the XI Ifrit blade :)
I dont like any weapon because they try to do a style that isnt a FF style..... [Removed by Moderator according to the FINAL FANTASY XIV FORUM Guidelines.]
I hate the thaum weapon personaly lol it looks like a glowing stick >.>... [Removed by Moderator according to the FINAL FANTASY XIV FORUM Guidelines.]
By the line of logic presented in the OP, Great Swords (a weapon type that was popular in XI, and I have seen a desire for in XIV) would be pretty much inexcusable in Hydaelyn.
I honestly don't think that these weapons are "cartoony", and their proportions aren't nearly as exaggerated as the absurd WoW shoulder pads (or WoW anything for that matter).
I will say that I am all for absurdly sized weapons, as long as the same care and detail put into them as is put into the armor/weapons of the Monster Hunter franchise (if you aren't familiar with the series, most of the weapons are as big, if not bigger than your character. It also boasts some of the best armor, weapon, and monster design of any game that I've ever played) - which if anything is what the Ifrit rewards reminded me of.
Hydaelyn is a world where a three foot tall Lalafell can chuck someone nearly three times his size out of a bar. Final Fantasy is a series where the absurd, and impossible are typically embraced. I would hope that the devs and artists for XIV do not limit themselves by the bleak "black and brown, everything should be realistic" picture that the OP seems to wish for. This game is brown enough as it is, please continue to embrace color and variety, SE.
