From what I read earlier in the thread, I was thinking the cutscene would only be temporary until they work out a system like XI's. So now it's confirmed the cutscene is staying and it's skippable? Or am I reading it wrong?

You can choose once both methods are implemented, since the CS version is easier to implement that'll be the only option atm. When they update it again they'll allow for the option to either watch a dinky CS or even skip the CS if they want to save time or for those who have time on their hand they can enjoy the scenery of flying the airship.
Hopefully they actually implement events into the scenery portion of it so it becomes more then just a nice view. Otherwise it'll be forgotten quite quickly once people enjoy once or twice lol.
Outrage!
I wish they'd concentrate on making a more static world rather than what makes gameplay more convenient. Make me a role playing game where I get to play the role of someone in another WORLD, not where I play the role of a gamer trying to grind and get awesome gear.
(Of course grinding is necessary but give me context to make it worth it.)
Boo don't like this response. Sorry but I'm not for catering to the "let's skip everything crowd". I like to enjoy things and if it's just an instant teleport always, that won't make sense and will kill the immersion. So person A gets instant warped while person B is arriving 5 minutes later? No no no.. that's just, just.. no
Airships are a staple of the Final Fantasy series. If people don't want to enjoy them, they MAY be in the wrong place.
I say make these ships right, not just a cutscene.
This is a terrible decision. They can't please every crowd with this game just by giving them options. If this was a single player game I could understand but this is an MMO. 8o% of the people in the world have no passion and no patience. Give these people the chance to have things their way and they'll ruin it for everyone else.
Can we do the same with the ferry please? I'd love to be able to skip that.
Options are a wonderful thing because not everyone will play the game the same way you do but doesn't mean they appreciate the game any less. It's nice to be able to "opt out" of events because dying on the ship from Sea Horror or whatever random occurance when you just wanted to get somewhere was not fun at all. Playing it safe and sitting in the bottom part of the ship was pretty much skipping the boat trip anyway. The airship ride will be a nice view but I don't want to have to wait through it every single time. When they add events to it there will be incentive to stay through the trip.
i cant say i agree with the decision to make the cut scene skipable. even if we can't freely explore; at least make it an even wait for everyone. if people really cant wait 3 minutes or so for a cut scene or two then they will be happy to use anima
So we can fast travel on airships?
Score. Thanks, Yoshida. :D
Meh. Not liking the response then. I think Anima should be there for those who want to fast travel. Leave the ferry and airships as an interactive experience. So much can be added.
You'll still have the option to do so. Hell with the excuse that the quick trip option is there they could make the airship ride and battles/whatever on there really long and involved.
Awesome! ^^ Ferry ride should be like this too! I love taking my time during trips to craft and stuff, but would be awesome when we're in a hurry we being able to just "skip" the travel, instantly arriving.
Also, i'd love to see more entertaining stuff during trips...like monsters, quests, pirates, etc! ^^
I just don't understand people. That is what ANIMA is for. If you are in a hurry, use anima. If you use the airship or boat, it shouldn't be in instant warp (meaning when they add the actual trip for airships). I mean come on people, if you can't wait, us the anima. It's for quick trips to meet people. NOT to travel everywhere's with.

If this is the teams plan just make city warps free instead of costing 3 anima.
I'm really disappointed.
IF YOU WANT FAST TRAVEL USE ANIMA.
I want the FFXIV world to be alive and immersive.
IF THAT MEANS I HAVE TO RIDE A *** AIRSHIP FOR 5-10 MIN THEN SO BE IT!
FFXIV is the burgerking of MMOs your way right away.....
I'm not sure why people are in such a hurry when they play. Stop procrastinating, obviously there's something else you should be doing than playing online if you are in such a hurry.
Can't say I agree with this method, but I'm probably just being an "old man", resisting the change. At this point-- Do whatever the heck you feel like. Maybe it won't be as bad as I am thinking, I'll appraise it properly when it's finally here.
I'm skeptical as hell, mind you.
It's a little disheartening... I didnt read every post but did anyone come up with the notion that, because each player will be able to choose to if they'll quickly watch the quick cs or wander the boat for 5 minutes, pretty much means that you wont be riding with any other players? Ergo, airship content, if any, will be solo?
Let us drive our own airships !!
Well, i must agree. I don't think i'd ever be skipping trips even if i could. I always enjoyed FFXI long trips...even the 15 min one to Al Zahbi! I always loved the quests and the fights there! Who never took the ferry in Mhaura just to take revenge against some 8-arms bud that loves raping lowbies? =P
I think that, even if the idea is good (allowing those that don't enjoy the trips to skip it), it does is just another depreciative point to the game. In the end we are going from a said "too complex" game to a too simple one...at this pace soon enough they will change the 3D graphics for some 2D pixeled graphics because its more simple, fitting the game better.
Having both options is great. Let's face it, Anima runs out. Quickly. And adding airships that didn't have a fast travel option would have done nothing to alleviate this (contrary to popular belief) because instead of going "Well I'll just take the long airship ride, at least it's immersive yay", it'd be "Screw that airship, it takes 10 minutes to get to town. I'm gonna ask for a teleport and pay somebody to get there".
The only way adding airship travel was going to stop people from using Anima is if it offered the same speed of travel. Which is instant. Airships don't make Anima useless (as you have way less options for destination on airship travel than you do with Anima), but it does make it manageable, which was the point. But that isn't what most people complaining wanted, unfortunately. They wanted something more like "Yay we got our immersion, and you can't have convenience! Unless you have Anima that runs out with no way to restore it other than time, of course. Oh, you don't? You have to take a long time to go somewhere, we're forcing our immersion down your throat! We win, you lose!".
Now, people trying to go from say, Gridania to Limsa quickly will go, "instead of using my Anima I can pay some Gil and take the airship over to the Limsa, and get there quickly so I can do what I need to do there". And for the people who want the immersion, it's still there. It's not magically going away because other people might need to get there fast and use the instant option. And they'll probably add features that will make people want to use the long version when they have time.
Ultimately, in this case choice doesn't make it a gamebreaker. It just makes everyone happy. Well, it doesn't make the people who want to force everyone to do it their way or the highway happy.
Of course it's not a game breaker. But it's a huge let down for setting for Eorzea. It's a huge let down to the time and resources the dev team will devote to creating the experience of riding the airship, when most likely a large portion of the community will opt for the fast travel option over the actual ride.
They already have a fast travel option, it's called Anima.
My basic feeling is by creating alternatives to singular modes of travel (airship ride vs air ship fast travel) it creates more and more fractures in the player community. Ultimately reinforcing the single player MMO mentality.
There was something special in he early days of FFXI riding the ferry with other players and facing down pirate attacks or NM spawns. I just imagined that FFXIV would be similar instead of implementing a paid warp.
insta travel is very sexy, but an OPTION to ride the airship rather then insta warp might be nice, for those that wish to enjoy a ride. if your in a rush it can be a pain in the butt though.
i'd like to personally see both options, from time to time i just want to get there and be on my way; However myself and many others do enjoy the ride once in awhile.
That's how they're planning to implement it Dante, insta-travel only at first, with options for insta-travel or a scenic ride (and maybe battles/events) coming later.
I have to say some of the design decisions revealed last month has shaken my faith in the direction the game will go into,
I fear the game is turning out to be way to casual catering for my personal taste.
Now that airship is just a glorified 0 anima cost city to city warp, I have to say I'm very disapointed, how did it take so long for them to implement it then?
And wasnt aiship/chocobo supposed to be travel option for thoose with more time on their hands, and anima still there for thoose in a rush?
And I don't know but , if you consider yourself casual player and you're running out of anima, then you aren't casual ;)
I play 2-3h on average per day (doing my leves and occational dungeon/FNM or exp duo) and I'm never lower then 60-70 anima...
I was sad when i saw this aswell, hopefully they add a full fly mode
Even if they add a full ride flight as an "option" it will make no difference. They would have to put a vast amount of content on it just to get people to ride and they probably wont. The sad fact is that by adding a fast travel airship they have effectively killed the concept of a immersive real time travel system.
You can pretty much count the ferry as dead in the water as well..
i will watch the CS once and skip every other time.
Here is a million dollar idea SE, from the mouth of the "I want it now" club.
Considering Airships will be optional trips for those who have "No time" yet are seemingly out of anima (How this works I will never know) We need to be more considerate to them! Getting from City to city is almost meaningless what are they going to do when they get there?
Grab leves and then...USE ANIMA to teleport to their camps? I THINK NOT! Chocobos are coming as well, I suggest we make a free optional cutscene for chocobos to pick-up and drop-off players at the Aetherite camp of their choice. Anima is limited and players are always starved for time. Why waste their time moving from point A to point B at all?
This is just the start of my revolutionary ideas for the game. Look forward to my next post about "Lev monsters being at a slight distance...how droll, make them warp to us."
Jynx quit giving them ideas. They're going to use the chocobo caravans that way ; ;!
I dunno about everyone else, but the mere fact that this topic has gone on this long proves that, yes, it is an issue, the player base is split on it, and it does, in fact, need to be carefully considered by the dev team. Any old slap-shod implementation just won't do.
I see where this man is going, and since I can't cater for myself anymore, I might as well help!
Path? Who needs paths? Open space is a waste of SERVER. I say we make this game like "zones" again. You exit town, and you select the camp you want to pop in! Then, the Aetheryte Camp is no longer has a gagillion feet map around it-- Make it a 200 Yamls (at the most) big circular map around the Aetheryte, mobs pop right at the crystal where you initiate the leve. PRESTO! I see no problem here, nobody will claim your mob or anything.
Wanna grind? Instanced. Every single possible camp/dungeon you grind on? Instanced. To which to teleport to, of course.
This is going to get awesome. We only need button mashing content and we are SET!
ok ok... once they add the flight scene all they need to do is make it gil cost + anima (same as regular teleport)
problem solved lol
As you read above, Anima being the "fast travel option" eventually runs out. And there's no way to recover Anima other than wait for it to be restored. And because the people using Anima are using to get somewhere quickly, having a long "immersive" airship ride isn't going to make them stop using Anima. Therefore, when the people run out of Anima they would have no choice other than to be forced into the "immersion" other people want.
From what I've read, it is basically a "We want immersion and we want to force anyone who doesn't to want it too" mentality from the people arguing against choice. How other people choose to play shouldn't be your issue, folks. Not wanting to be "immersed in the game world" doesn't make them worse players like say, not learning a class/job or something. Therefore, it shouldn't affect you and your friends, who likely will choose immersion.
Unless part of it is getting one over on the people from the other camp in some kind of sick "we're right and you're wrong" game. Which if it is, get over it.
I believe what people are actually saying is they want immersion and having a way around immersion effectively kills immersion.
The fact is between Mounts and Airships for the times when you are not in a rush there will be no excuse for having 0 anima. The only people who I know of that run out of anima are people teleport absolutely everywhere. Anima is in the game to stop them from doing that. What then would be the point of putting in another way to instantly move what equates to hundreds of miles instantly. Its not like they can just pretend you didn't get there instantly by forcing the game time forward. It kills immersion just by being in the game and it kills any sense of realism in the world.
I do wan't to ride the airship, and this being a MMO I do expect and apreciate seing other players now and then in game, having an empty airship with only me on it isnt going to be worth the ride, thus everyone will skip the ride and it might as well be a teleport NPC instead of an airship alltogheter.
Actualy that gives me an idea:
Just add a NPC in each major city who can teleport to any city for a cost (lets say airship cost is 1k per ride, then make the instant warp 10k for example), that way the "want it now!" crowd get their way for a somewhat larger fee and the people who don't mind a 5-10min trip and/or wants to save some gil will go for the airship flight.
If not then I don't see the reason why we should have a 1h timer dungeon, just have people enter right at each boss, or better yet, enter right at the treasure chests! Why level a class to 50 even? Just pick up a weapon and be at cap right away!
In an MMO the journey should be what matters most, not reaching the goal as fast as you can.
Stupid idea, really stupid. Just another way to make you feel like you're not in an actual world and everything is right next door. What is Eorzia, 200 SQft or something?
SE, if you're going to stupidly make and insta and a non-insta travel option for airship, then make the insta option cost anima and more gil than the non-insta version, or no one will ever take the time for the other option, just like no one will ever use chocobo's if they have the anima. Better yet, just dont have an insta-travel option at all for airships.
